- “Garden Center of Vera Glukhova” is a member of the Association of Planting Material Manufacturers (APPM). What is the Association? What is its mission?
Association of Planting Material Manufacturers - non-profit organization, created in 2008 on the initiative of the owners of private Russian plant nurseries and defending the interests of domestic nursery farming. Today, the APPM includes 190 members: 129 Russian nurseries from 36 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, as well as nurseries from Belarus - 5, Kazakhstan - 4, Ukraine - 1, and 51 organizations whose activities are directly related to nursery farming - garden centers, specialized educational and scientific institutions, suppliers materials and equipment for nurseries, suppliers of specialized equipment, agrochemical products, seed suppliers. The main objectives of the Association are the exchange of information between nurseries, the introduction modern technologies production of planting material, promotion of industry standards, publication of plant catalogs, organization of trips to exchange experience in Russian and foreign nurseries, the international cooperation. In 2017, the tenth anniversary conference was held, which brought together almost 800 delegates from Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and Italy. The Association has seven board members who are elected by general vote. Last year I was a member of the board, this year I recused myself because there was a lot of work, and we decided to take the next step in our nursery. But this does not mean that I do not continue to work in the Association. At a conference in Moscow, I gave a presentation on creating a garden center from scratch. Specialists and nurseries who have already reached a certain level in their business are ready to share their experience. This is the most valuable thing. We have already received a work plan for this year.
- What has the Association achieved in 10 years?
Ten years ago, industry professionals were just planning to unite. The first conference was attended by 100 people. Ten years later, 800 specialists took part. If people weren't interested, they wouldn't come. The Association has developed very detailed standards for planting materials of ornamental fruit plants, recommended in Russia. Before that, everyone used the standards of the 50s and 60s. Of course, the new standards are not generally accepted; they are not in the register. But they are recommended by APPM. A nursery that is part of the Association must meet these standards. Such plants will definitely be good and of high quality.
- What are your garden center's plans for 2017?
In 2017, we decided to develop our uncultivated land, which is about 10 hectares. We start any enterprise with a fence, roads, lighting, wells, and irrigation systems. Everything will be done using the latest technologies. First of all, we want to grow fast growing shrubs, which are in demand in our conditions. The region already has the largest garden center, which we opened in 2013 in Kurumoch. In 2016, we launched another garden center, and we will expand it three times this season. The southern direction of the Samara region seems very interesting. The available territory did not make it possible to display the entire assortment in full, so that people would not have to travel across the city to buy plants. The assortment of plants is chosen very carefully every year. In the fall of 2016, we were already selling part of our products - fruit seedlings, raspberries, hydrangea. Every year the range of plants and their number will only increase. Every year we release a voluminous price list with photos and everything we offer this season. In 2017, we decided to focus on hydrangeas. On their own, they released a special catalog of hydrangeas in 1000 copies, which contains a description of all 63 varieties. This plant is gaining more and more popularity because it begins to bloom in June and ends in late autumn. The garden and space are constantly changing because the hydrangea changes color. Another catalog of our landscape work will be published soon.
At the end of 2016, together with Amond Group of Companies, we began work in interesting project EcoGrad "Volgar" is a modern social infrastructure: kindergartens, schools, clinics, shopping and office centers, sports, recreational and ethnographic complex, embankments and parks. Construction of the area is being carried out in stages on a total area of 300 hectares until 2025 to accommodate 70 thousand people. The project is large-scale and very interesting! We face an important task - laying out future parks and improving the area. We provide consulting support in the design and implementation of improvement projects. We supply planting material and directly plant plants, install decorative compositions(rockeries, mixborders, hedges). To make each residential area unique, we proposed landscaping in different compositional and species styles - coniferous, chestnut, rowan, birch, linden and others. When landing we plan to use different varieties and the shapes of a certain type of plant, from classic to weeping, from creeping to clipped. It is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also educational; nature amazes with its richness and imagination. We also hope to take part in preparing the city for the 2018 World Cup.
- How is the situation with import substitution in the industry?
This year we tried to analyze and see how capacious the Russian green industry market is and what percentage of plants are imported from Europe. If we take the entire industry, then tulip bulbs, for example, are still 100% imported from Europe. We do not have a single enterprise in Russia that would be engaged in growing tulip bulbs. Seeds are also mostly imported from Europe. If you combine everything, you get 90%. We produce only 10% ourselves. If we take planting material, 60-70% is imported from Europe. The rest is produced in Russia. It's already great achievement. Our nurseries are growing by leaps and bounds. We are establishing a nursery in the region and plan to grow 600 thousand plants. Fruit plants We buy only in Russia and in those regions that are adapted to our climate. For example, 5 thousand apple tree seedlings were grafted ourselves last year. In the fall of 2017, we will be able to offer our own apple trees. We also planted raspberries, about 7 thousand seedlings. We planted queen cells for cuttings fruit bushes. In the future, we will see how well the technology can withstand.
Plants in our garden center are presented from 25 European and 15 Russian nurseries. After 3-5 years the plants Russian production can safely claim a market share of 50%. There are some products that we cannot replace. If we had subsidies for the purchase of agricultural equipment for nurseries, this would be good support. And the equipment that we need, unfortunately, is not yet produced in Russia. The capacity of the live goods market is about 200 billion rubles. Share of costs for plants open ground from Europe is 70%. This money could be used to develop planting material in Russia.
- How pressing is the personnel issue for the industry?
There is a huge shortage of specialists in this area. Almost no one cooks them. We are forced to teach all the people who come to us. The person applying for the position of seller has absolutely no knowledge of plants. I believe that even if people don’t know, at least they love plants and want to work with them. This is already good.
- How does the garden center build relationships with consumers?
At the end of each year, we analyze the winter hardiness and survival rate of plants. We have established Feedback with customers and for us it is very important to have good, high-quality plants.
For the second year in a row, we are growing tulips in Samara for International Women’s Day. This year there will be about 60 thousand tulips grown on the territory of maximum security colony No. 10. Work in the colony will continue after the holiday; perennials will be planted there in containers.

Sanatorium Zarya, Stavropol region, Kislovodsk. Client: Presidential Administration Russian Federation. Work is currently underway. Our company is taking part in the reconstruction of the complex of buildings of the Federal State Institution Sanatorium Zarya of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation in Kislovodsk. We have been entrusted with carrying out landscaping and landscaping work, with total area 22ha. On this moment work on preparing the territory and plantings has been fully completed, i.e. felling, pruning and mowing were carried out. On an area of 1.5 hectares, the lawn was restored and a new one was installed. Improvement work is actively underway: - installation of decorative retaining walls with cladding natural stone; - reconstruction and installation of new walking paths with a printed coating of decorative red sand; - installation of curb stones. In agreement with the Customer, it was mastered new technology production concrete surfaces garden paths and decorative platforms printed concrete, creating the effect of natural stone paving. On the territory of the sanatorium, work was carried out to construct an artificial reservoir with a volume of 700 cubic meters and a water surface area of 370 square meters. The holiday home is located on the territory of the former estate of Count Kutaisov in the Moscow region. Therefore, we were faced with the task of fitting into the existing ensemble as much as possible. We adhered to the garden and park (regular) style, which presupposes symmetry in the layout, clarity of lines and triumph of forms. For planting, we used exclusive plants from nurseries in Germany, Poland, and Holland, paying attention to the special selection of trees and shrubs that change little in shape, with clear geometric shapes crowns and easy to trim. At the central entrance, magnificent Pendula rough elms are symmetrically located, the entire territory of the front part of the park along the perimeter is bordered by a hedge of dwarf spirea GoldFlame. WITH north side two rockeries were placed symmetrically with the architecture of the building, but to indicate the originality of each, we gave them irregular shapes. To create the solemnity of the eastern entrance of the building, we used classic roses in pure shades. Obstetrics and gynecology building of the Central Clinical Hospital with a polyclinic of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, Moscow. The total area is 0.6 hectares. The work was carried out in the period September-November 2008. - arrangement of sowing lawn (sowing under snow) 3000 sq.m.; - arrangement of a rock garden with an area of 162 square meters; - arrangement of a rose garden with an area of 25 square meters; - planting 369 coniferous and deciduous trees and shrubs; - planting 460 perennial and bulbous flowers. A special feature of this facility is the main entrance area, most of which is located under the stairs and in the shadow of the building, so we decided to create decorative filling from river pebbles in areas with almost complete shade. But using only stone in landscaping is a too simple and dull task. Construction of a rock garden with planting shade-tolerant plants(conifers, perennial flowers and ground cover plants) in adjacent areas with smoothly flowing lines of form, harmoniously fit into the modern architecture of the building. Social and residential complex in the village of Komarovo, St. Petersburg. It’s nice that the customer trusted our professional opinion and accepted the changes to the project that we proposed. When creating decorative compositions, we used a wide variety of conifers and deciduous plants from 3 nurseries in Germany and Belgium. Exclusive varieties, original forms(barefoot, standard, molded), beautiful flowering shrubs, a variety of deciduous trees and became a highlight and a laconic addition to the existing plantings. A consequence of the predominance of plantings of conifers, heathers, rhododendrons and azaleas was the use of pine bark as backfill, which fits well into this natural composition. And it is an indispensable material for mulching, correspondingly increasing the vital activity of plants, reducing the time spent on care and improving the aesthetic appearance of compositions. Kuibyshev Oil Refinery (Rosneft CJSC), Samara. Arrangement of flower beds from annual plants with an area of 1140 sq.m. May 2008 The territory of the central alley includes 16 regular geometric flower beds. Of the 18 proposed sketch options, the customer approved six flower bed designs with the condition of their alternation. In the process of planting, we came up with new ideas, which we discussed on the spot with the customer, and as a result, instead of the planned 6 options for flower beds, we received 12, i.e. only 4 flower bed patterns were repeated. But the quickly increased number of workers (up to 180 people), the clear, well-coordinated work of the team, the professionalism and responsibility of its members helped to implement the plan in full and on time. The result of the work was a well-groomed, updated, flourishing territory of the sanatorium, and the reward was gratitude to V.V. And the whole point is that in the very center of Jericho the ancient sacred “tree of Zacchaeus” grows. It is also called the "Biblical fig tree." This is the only living witness to the sermons of Jesus Christ. The oldest historical monument, which is more than 2,000 years old. It was decided to build a museum on this site to strengthen Russian-Palestinian relations. In February 2010, construction began in the center of Jericho. Architects from several countries worked to create this unique cultural heritage.
Vera Viktorovna once said: “A flourishing city is the dream of every inhabitant on the planet.” Therefore, we, her fellow countrymen, are pleased to realize that the territory with a total area of 1.1 hectares was ennobled and landscaped by our Samara garden center, becoming truly the epicenter of the Jericho construction events. For Vera Glukhova's gardening company, this trip was the first work abroad on landscaping and landscaping of such a scale. The beginning, as they say, has begun!
The workers of the Vera Glukhova Garden Center came from the hot Samara summer in the midst of the Arabian heat of Jericho. A group of sixteen people, in a sense, “moved a mountain.” The first thing they did planned was to carry out a thorough cleaning of the building area. The volume is colossal! And this is just a small part of what our fellow countrymen have contributed to.
On construction site the heat was unbearable. During the day, the air temperature reached about 45-50 degrees (and this was only in the shade!). But there is such a phrase: “It is necessary, then it is necessary!” Perhaps a different mentality would not understand this, but for us, Russians, this is the norm.
We worked from 6 am and sometimes until 1 am, devoting only 5-6 hours a day to sleep and recuperation. But it was worth it. The experience is incredible, the result is unsurpassed!
Leveling the soil, planting trees, flowers and shrubs, pruning trees, planting a lawn, arranging rockeries, active participation in the creation of all paths and a pond.
Assistance was also provided in laying paving stones, erecting a fence and even a power plant, installing supporting walls, construction of large and small domes. Drainage, water supply and electrical cables have been laid.

This requires trips to other nurseries and exchange of experience between colleagues in the green workshop.
In the evening there was a banquet at which a lot was said kind words to the "Garden Center of Vera Glukhova", "World of Plants" and "Yola-Pala". By the way, the food for the banquet was prepared by nursery staff under the leadership of Nina Ivanovna, Andrey and Antonina’s mother. It is, of course, much tastier and more soulful than what you order from a restaurant. And it is from the mother that the children have this love for plants, hard work and the desire to do everything to the highest class.
