Installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109. Connecting fog lights on the legendary Nine. Tools and materials

In this article we will install and connect fog lights on a VAZ 2109. The material in this article will also be useful to owners of VAZ-2108 and VAZ 21099 with a “high” panel; for their cars this operation is absolutely identical. Fog lights on a car are designed to improve road illumination during fog, snowfall, and heavy rain. They can also be used during the day instead of low beams according to traffic regulations. Also, correctly installed and adjusted fog lights illuminate the side of the road well, which helps to notice pedestrians who suddenly appear there in time.

  • To install you will need:
Power wire with a cross section of 1.25 square meters. mm. The wire should be long enough to stretch from the fuse box to each fog light.
  • Wide terminal (female) - 4 pcs.
  • Narrow terminal (female) - 1 pc.
  • Terminal with a hole in the middle (ground) - 3 pcs.
  • with block and wires.
  • PTF power button.
  • Fog lights - 2 pcs.

Already on sale ready-made kits for installation fog lights, including all the above materials, already prepared for installation:

If it is not possible to purchase a similar kit for connecting fog lights on a VAZ 2109, or you want to do everything yourself, then we will assemble the following:

PTF relay with block and crimped wires. The power wires are crimped with wide terminals (1 and 2). Wires of the relay control winding: one is crimped with a narrow terminal (3), the other with a terminal with a hole - ground (4)

Power wires from the mounting block to the headlight (both pairs of wires are shown in the figure): one end is crimped with a wide terminal (1 and 2), on the other there is a block for connecting to the fog lamp (3 and 4), the second wire of the block (black) is ground ( 5 and 6)

Let's move on directly to the process of installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109.
Install and connect the button. On cars with a high panel, a ready-made standard place for it is provided:

We dismantle the grille covering the speaker, unscrew the speaker, and find two connectors there for connecting the button for turning on the fog lights and the indicator for turning them on.

We remove the plug, install the button in its place, connect the electrical connectors and install the speaker and grille in place.

Now you need to run the wires from the fog lights and from the relay installation location (except for the relay ground wire) to the “black box”.

We disconnect connectors Ш8 and Ш7 (Ш7 is located next to Ш8, but noticeably wider) from the mounting block. We insert the terminals into the connectors in accordance with the diagram. These connectors in the blocks are not occupied in the absence of PTF.

We insert the connectors back into the fuse block:

We install the mounting block in place. We screw the relay to the car body, secure its mass under the same bolt, having previously cleared the contact area of paint:

We connect the power wires to the fog lights, also next to the fog light in convenient location We connect the ground, ensuring reliable contact with the car body:

Final result:

You can attach the fog lights by drilling a hole in the metal insert next to the bumper mounting bolt. Some bumpers have special holes for attaching fog lights using brackets included with the PTF. They must be secured firmly; fog lights attached to the plastic bumper will shake on uneven roads and when passing obstacles. Also, instead of low beam headlights during daylight hours, you can use.

Now all that remains is to properly adjust the fog lights:

Fog, snow or rain are not the most pleasant conditions for a comfortable ride, due to very poor visibility. The way out of this situation is to use fog lights that have been specially designed for such weather.

Fog lights on the VAZ 2109, like on other cars, are located close to the ground.

High or low beam does not provide sufficient illumination of the road, due to the fact that the fog is stronger at the level where the standard optics are located.

It consists of tiny particles of water that reflect light from conventional headlights back at the driver, further impairing visibility. In reality, there is no fog on the surface of the earth, although it seems that it “creeps” across it.

Fog lights have obvious advantages. The only thing that the owner of a VAZ 2109 must do when the fog lights are installed is to configure them.

Types of headlights

Currently, there are various models of foglights, but they can be divided into two groups:

  • Fog lights for VAZ 2109 with halogen lamps.
  • Fog lights for VAZ 2109 with LEDs.

Despite the fact that the cost of LED headlights for the VAZ 2109 is 2 times more expensive, they consume less electricity. Halogen headlights are cheaper, but they consume a lot of energy. Everyone must decide for themselves what exactly to choose.

What do you need to prepare to install fog lights?

Of course, first of all you need to buy the fog lights themselves for the VAZ 2109. Then you will need an installation kit containing wires with connectors, as well as a relay.

The button for turning on the fog lights on the VAZ 2109 is installed on the right side of the left speaker, together with the button for turning on the rear window heater. If you don't have an installation kit, you'll have to buy the wires and connectors yourself.

If everything is done correctly, you won't need any electrical tape. For all connections, you can use connectors and plugs, which should be in heat-shrinkable insulation (reminiscent of a thin hose).

Under the influence of high temperatures (lighter flame), it shrinks. After preparing everything you need, you can begin installing the headlights on the car.

DIY installation of fog lights on a VAZ 2109

First, the fog light mount is installed. There are mounting bolts under the front bumper, but if this location is not suitable, you can install them from below the bumper.

The front bumper of the VAZ 2109 is made of hard plastic, which will allow it to withstand the weight of the fog lights.

However, you need to ensure that the headlights are no more than 40 cm from the side parts of the car body. In height, they should be located no less than 25 cm from the ground.

The connection diagram for the foglight control units looks like this:

From the “30” terminal of the ignition switch you need to take the positive and apply it to the button that turns on the fog lights. This will ensure that the headlights turn off after the ignition is turned off. The other output of the button is fed to the relay coil. From the relay, one of the coil terminals goes to the fog light switch, the other to the housing or minus.

From battery, a wire is thrown through the fuse to the normally open contacts of the relay. Normally open contacts are contacts that close only after voltage is applied to the relay coil.

The wire from the other relay contact is led to the fog lights, which are connected in parallel. The fog lamp housing should be connected to the ground or minus of the battery.

This completes the process of installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109 car. A similar circuit can be used not only to connect fog lights, but also a sound signal, glass heaters and mirrors.

Rain, snow and fog are not the most pleasant driving conditions, as visibility is very poor. However, the situation is saved by fog lights, specially designed for these weather conditions.

Fog lights on the VAZ 2109, like on any other car, are located close to the surface of the earth. Low or high beams do not provide sufficient illumination of the road, since at the level of standard optics the fog is strong (which are tiny particles of water that reflect the light of conventional headlights back to the driver, further impairing visibility). In fact, there is no fog directly near the ground, although it seems that it “spreads” along it.

The advantages of fog lights are obvious. The only thing the VAZ 2109 owner needs to do after installing the fog lights is to configure them.

Types of headlights

Today you can meet the most different models fog lights, but they can be divided into two categories: with LEDs and with halogen lamps. Of course, LED fog lights for the VAZ 2109 will be twice as expensive, but they consume less energy. Headlights with halogen lamps are cheaper, but their consumption is several times higher. What to choose is up to you.

Preparing for installation

What will be needed for installation?

  • Firstly, the fog lights themselves;
  • Secondly, an installation kit, which contains wires with connectors and relays. The button for turning on the fog lights on the VAZ 2109 is installed to the right of the left speaker, next to the button for turning on the rear window heater. If there is no installation kit, you will have to buy wire and connectors for connections.

If you do everything according to your mind, then insulation tape won't be useful. All connections are made using connectors and plugs, which must be enclosed in heat-shrinkable insulation (it looks like a thin hose). Under the influence high temperature(for example, the flame of a lighter), it contracts. Having collected everything you need, you can begin installing headlights on the VAZ 2109.

The procedure for installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109

First, we install the fog lamp mounts: there are bolts for fastening under the front bumper, but if you are not happy with this place, you can install them from below the bumper. On the VAZ 2109, the front bumper is made of hard plastic, so it will withstand the weight of the fog lights. But you need to pay attention that the headlights should be located no more than forty centimeters from the sides of the car body. In height - at least 25 centimeters from the surface of the earth.

The connection diagram of all fog lamp control units can be described as follows:

  • We take the plus from terminal “30” of the ignition switch and apply it to the button for turning on the fog lights - this will ensure that the headlights turn off when the ignition is turned off.
  • We feed the second output of the power button to the relay coil. The relay has one coil terminal on the fog light switch, and the second on the housing (minus).
  • From the battery, to the normally open contacts of the electromagnetic relay, we throw a wire through the fuse. Normally open are contacts that close only when voltage is applied to the relay coil.
  • From the second contact of the relay we lead the wire to the fog lights, connected in parallel. The fog light housing must be connected to ground - to the negative side of the battery.

This completes the installation of fog lights on the VAZ 2109. Using a similar scheme, you can connect not only fog lights, but also a sound signal, mirror and glass heaters.

The fuse rating in this diagram is selected based on the power of the connected load. For example, in the PTF VAZ 2109 there are 2 lamps of 55 W each. Then the current in the circuit will be equal to 55 W * 2 / 12V = 9.1 A. We will take the fuse with a small margin, i.e. 15A.

But such a scheme pure form Not suitable for connecting fog lights. We draw attention to the Rules, which state that PTFs should be turned on only after the side lights are turned on. Accordingly, the diagram needs to be slightly modified, and it takes on this form:

The indication that the fog lights are on will also work here, i.e. The light will come on when the PTF is turned on.

The only thing that is not reflected in the diagram is the backlighting of the button itself when the dimensions are turned on. But on some buttons, including on old VAZ 2108, it is simply missing. And if necessary, and the button allows you to make a backlight, then this is very easy to do by applying a plus to one contact of the backlight lamp from any wire on which voltage appears when the dimensions are turned on (the backlight of the panel next to the button), and connecting the other to ground.

Well, finally, I’ll give you a couple standard schemes connecting PTF to VAZ 2108 and 2109, maybe it will be useful to someone!.

Appearance of fog lights on a VAZ 2109:

Installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109 is not difficult if you know how to read simple diagrams and have basic installation skills. The connection diagram is standard, and if you look closely, you will even see the wiring that lies in the engine compartment, goes to the button in the cabin and to the fuse box.

But don’t be happy, these wires do not always allow you to connect the fog lights - the age of the car and outside interference in the wires laid at the factory have an effect. As a result, installation in this way becomes impossible, and we have to resort to extreme measures. So, let’s look at the process of installing fog lights on a VAZ 2109, 21099 and 2108 car in order.

Installation materials and requirements

So, first you need to stock up on the following tools and materials:

  1. Directly fog lights.
  2. About three meters single core wire(red) with a section of 0.75 squares.
  3. Relay with normally open contacts, a metal plate for fastening and a block with wires.
  4. Button (most likely, it is already installed next to the rear window heating switch).
  5. At least five screws.
  6. Screwdriver, 10mm wrench, utility knife and pliers.
  7. Heat shrink insulation and electrical tape.
  8. 16 Amp fuse and socket for it.

Before you start, you should decide on the mounting location for the VAZ 2109 fog lights themselves, pay attention to bottom part bumper If you look closely, you will find places for fastening there.

There’s just one drawback - on older cars it’s sometimes difficult to install in these exact places; you have to contrive and screw them directly to the bumper. You just need to take into account some of the requirements of GOST, which has been in force since 1975 to this day:

  1. The distance from the side surfaces of the car body to the nearest edge of the fog lamp should be a maximum of 40 cm.
  2. The height of the fog lights (from the ground surface to the bottom edge) is from 25 cm.

To avoid problems with law enforcement agencies (read traffic police inspectors), you need to adhere to these requirements. But the “attention” of inspectors is not so dangerous, much worse is the incorrect dispersion of light as a result of incorrect installation. Fog lights will either blind oncoming drivers or be ineffective in poor visibility conditions.

How to install fog lights on a VAZ 2109?

So, the installation begins. To carry it out, you must first install the headlights in the intended location. After this, take the wire and connect it to the right fog lamp (positive terminal). Lead the wire into the engine compartment and connect it to the harness running under the radiator. Bring this to the left fog lamp of the VAZ 2109, and then make a connection with its lamp. Insulate all bare areas; for this it is best to use heat shrink.

Connection with standard mounting block 2109

Next, the wire must be brought to the installation site of the electromagnetic relay, whose normally open contacts serve to supply voltage to the fog lights of the VAZ 2109. The plus from the battery comes to one terminal through a 16 Ampere fuse, from the second it will be removed and go to the fog lights connected in parallel.

Two wires are connected to the contacts of the relay coil: one immediately to ground, and the second lead to the button in the cabin. Now all that remains is to supply negative power to both fog lights of the VAZ 2109, and apply positive power to the second contact of the button from the ignition switch (to prevent the fog lights from turning on when the ignition is off).

PTF connection - diagram for any car

Now I would like to make a visual notification about the inclusion of fog lights on the VAZ 2109 dashboard. Unfortunately, not all modifications have an indicator lamp built into the panels. But you can cheat - if you have a carburetor, and there is a lamp indicating an engine error, then you can use it (as an option - a seat belt indicator).

This lamp must be connected to the break in the wire going to the ignition switch. You will get a closed circuit, but if the indicator lamp or relay coil fails, the fog lights on the VAZ 2109 will not turn on.
