Decorating the gazebo: making wooden trellises. Wooden lattice for a gazebo How to make a lattice from slats

A wooden lattice (decorative sheathing made of slats or trellises) is a great way to decorate and partially protect a gazebo from the effects of weather.

There are several options for making decorative sheathing; this article presents them as simple design, and complex. Depending on your financial capabilities, available material and desire, choose the option that suits you best.

The simplest option is to use wooden slats, which are nailed to the frame, after which the entire structure is attached to the gazebo. The finished grid looks like this:

Frame making

First of all, it is necessary to make a frame on which the slats will be attached. For good fastening It is recommended to use a material thicker than wooden planks, for example, 20x45 mm timber. If this is not possible, then the slats themselves can be the frame. The main thing is fastening; at this stage problems arise.

Fastenings in the frame can be made in different ways:

  • Cut at 45 degrees and fix with nails (the simplest, but unreliable option).
  • Connection into a spike, into a fringe, " dovetail"and the like (reliable, but difficult to implement).

After making the first frame, you will need to make another one. It is installed on top of the constructed grille on the reverse side to hide all the cut corners of the slats.

Attaching the slats to the frame

Since we are considering the simplest method, we will use nails. The slats are installed at an angle to the frame with the same step between them (the photo shows a step of 10 cm), then they are nailed to the frame on both sides, and the remaining wood is cut off.

Measuring distance

Fastening in corners

Installation of slats

The second option is to install slats in the gazebo window

If in the first version the grille was made in advance, then in this case the slats are immediately attached to the window at an angle of 45 degrees.

Before sheathing the gazebo, it is necessary to calculate the length of the material. The most difficult thing here is the calculations - you need to clearly measure the dimensions so that the distances in the cells are the same and the whole “picture” looks symmetrical.

The grille is attached to self-tapping screws at an angle of 45 degrees to the window, after which the slats themselves are also fastened together. Gaps at joints can be hidden with decorative plinths.

This option is suitable if the gazebo has smooth windows that will allow you to attach wooden blocks without additional processing.

The video above shows step-by-step instruction about the implementation of this option. This video is not as dynamic as the next one (although the method is more professional), but it shows the essence and understanding of the method very well.

The third option is a “groove-to-groove” grid

This method is professional; it will be impossible to implement it without a hand router and a circular saw. If you have access to woodworking tools, then you can approach the issue professionally and execute this option.

The entire process is presented in the video below (with professional voice acting). Sergey Neiman showed his own conductor who will help you implement such a sheathing with your own hands.

Making planks

To make the planks, we need a fairly thick board, in which grooves are cut using a hand router.

The finished board with grooves is sawn into circular saw. The result is identical slats, which will later become the gratings in the gazebo.

Fastening the planks

Unlike previous versions, glue is used here to attach the planks to each other. Initially, the entire structure is assembled “groove to groove” at an angle of 45 degrees, then each plank is pulled out, after which glue is applied and then glued. The work is monotonous, but the result is excellent.

After attaching the planks to each other, a frame is made, which is attached to the sheathing. The finished sheathing is varnished, after which it can be used to decorate the gazebo.

Options for decorative grilles in gazebos

Making lathing with your own hands is far from the most complicated process accessible to most amateur summer residents. Most often, the output is a regular pattern at an angle of 45 degrees.

If you approach this issue professionally, you can implement unique grilles that will decorate your gazebo exactly the way you want. I offer a selection of photographs of various options that will serve as an idea for your gazebo or simply delight the eye and surprise.

Specialization: master of internal and exterior decoration(plaster, putty, tiles, drywall, lining, laminate and so on). In addition, plumbing, heating, electrical, conventional cladding and balcony extensions. That is, renovations in an apartment or house were done on a turnkey basis with all necessary types works

It is unlikely that anyone will disagree with the fact that gazebos decorated wooden sheathing, very beautiful. Moreover, such decor also serves as an excellent addition to the exterior of a personal plot.

In most cases, such structures have a diagonal cell, but their assembly can be different:

  • the slats can simply overlap one another;
  • and can be fixed groove to groove.

I decided to make a lattice for the gazebo using the second method. I want to master it as it is more complex, and besides, in my opinion, it is a more attractive option.

DIY lathing

I divided the entire assembly process into 5 steps, these are:

  1. Choice of material.
  2. Making a rebated frame.
  3. Manufacturing of planks with grooves.
  4. Grate assembly.

Step 1. Select the material

First of all you need to choose suitable material. I thought like this:

  • In fact, any wood is suitable for making planks with grooves. Moreover, it is not necessary that it be whole. You can use thick or oriented strand board (OSB);

  • When choosing a material, you should take into account the fact that the structure will be located on the street, which means high humidity and temperature changes.

  • you can choose a board, but you can also furniture board. The second option is much more convenient, especially if you equip a conductor on the workbench. Choose a shield thickness of about 18 mm;
  • for the frame you will need bars with a cross section of 20x40 mm.

Step 2. Making a rebated frame

The size of the frame that I will make should correspond to the perimeter of the opening into which the decorative grille will be inserted. In addition, my design will be double.

That is, it needs to be glued together from two mirror-identical quadrangles so that a fold is formed between them. Therefore, you need to assemble two completely identical structures and, placing them on top of each other, check for the coincidence of the perimeter. If there are errors, they should be eliminated, including disassembling the product.

When the fitting is complete, along the inner perimeter of each frame manual router you need to select a fold:

  • make it at least 18 mm in width so that the edge of the grill can fit into it;
  • in depth, if the shield is 18 mm, make 11 mm - when connecting two parts this will give 22 mm.

If you cannot make tenon joints in the corners, then use self-tapping screws or nails instead of dowels, and additionally coat the joint with glue (PVA is possible).

If the bars are not polished, then it is better to process them before assembling the frame. Once the structure is assembled, machining the interior will be very difficult.

Step 3. Milling and sawing work

To make milling easier and more accurate, you can make a simple jig on a workbench, as shown in the photo below. It consists of two longitudinal strips along the thickness of the shield, the distance between which is 5 mm greater than the width of the workpiece, and two transverse (thrust) strips, which are screwed on top.

Router pass

When the workpiece (shield) is inserted into the jig, I press it on one side to the workbench with a clamp so that it does not move, and select the first groove. You will need to make a strip along the width of this groove, but it should be twice as thick.

I simply cut off a strip from the same shield. The rest of the actions are visible in the photo - I insert the bar into the groove and press it against the stop. And on the other side I make the next pass with a router and so on until the end of the workpiece.

If you use a furniture board with a thickness of 18 mm, then the depth of passage with the router should be 8 mm. When connecting two slats groove to groove, the protrusion on each side will be 2 mm, therefore, the total thickness of the grid will be 22 mm.

When all the grooves are made, you need to separate the workpiece into strips, the width of which is chosen arbitrarily, but, of course, without fanaticism. Depending on the size of the frame, the optimal width of the slats will be 20-30 mm, although this is a matter of taste and no instructions prohibit you from making them larger or smaller.

I adjust the circular saw (thrust board) according to the right size and get to work. If you do not have a stationary tool, then use a manual circular saw.

But hand tool It’s also better to fix it on a workbench, making it stationary. This will make it much easier to maintain the exact size and the work process itself will go much faster.

When selecting grooves and dissolving the workpiece, cutting accuracy is very important. If there is a failure, the grooves will not match, and therefore the material will simply be damaged.

Step 4. Grate assembly

Now I will perform the initial assembly, that is, I will set the direction of the diagonal. To do this you will need one of the halves of the frame.

I put 5-10 slats in it with the grooves up and install the upper slats, thereby setting the pitch of the slats. But pay attention to the photo above - one side in width immediately fits onto the fold - it will already be ready and will not have to be trimmed.

It is best to place all the planks on the top side so that you don’t have to return to them again later (however, this is not important). After laying, I carefully turn the product over and again align it along the fold (meaning a smooth edge) to mark the rest of the perimeter.

I recommend using the rule for this or long level, although you can simply place marks, focusing on the far side of the chamfer. After marking, I cut off the excess.

Now I remove each plank one by one, coat the grooves with glue and put it back. After this, I insert the grille into the fold.

I also apply it to the frame around the perimeter, put another part on top and press it with clamps or self-tapping screws (after removing the screws, the holes are puttied).

Step 5: Painting

After the glue dries, all I have to do is paint. ready product(paint and/or varnish). It is best to use a spray bottle for this, but you can, of course, also use a brush.

Everyone strives to make the gazebo attractive in appearance. An excellent decoration in this case is lattice for gazebo. Making a wooden lattice for a gazebo with your own hands is quite simple. This will be discussed in this article.

The decorative lattice for the gazebo serves not only as beautiful decoration, and can also be used as a base for climbing plants.

Materials

It is quite possible to make decorative wooden gratings for a gazebo in an economical way. You most likely have all the materials. Even if you don't have something, you can easily purchase it from garden store at a cheap price. After defining necessary materials All that remains is to figure out how to make a lattice for the gazebo.
To make it you will need:

  1. Bars;
  2. Hacksaw
  3. Self-tapping screws
  4. Nails
  5. Planks
  6. Sander
  7. Wood glue
  8. Wood paint or varnish

A little advice. Before you start making the grille, decide on the frame size, design and shape of the grille. It is best to make a small drawing that you will refer to as you work.

Method number 1: tenon connection

We make frames

In order to make a wooden lattice, you need to make its frame. A beam with a cross section of twenty by forty-five mm is perfect. We cut the bars according to the parameters of the section of the gazebo that we will cover with a lattice. Then we connect them using one of the options for connecting the strips of the main frame (pictured below)

Looking at the picture, we cut off the ends of the bars using a hacksaw. After that, we knock them together with nails. We make a second frame in the same way.

Lathing

The sheathing for the gazebo is simple to make. We have almost finished frames, all that remains is to make a fold (a cut on the edge of the board in the shape of a rectangle). We need 4 each wooden frames ki 10 by 20 mm for each frame (8 in total). We fasten these strips with nails along the edges of the sides of the frame.

Let's make markings on the long sides of the frame in the place where the grille slats will be located. We cut the ends of the planks at an angle of forty-five degrees.

Now all that remains is to assemble the grille. Let's fold the resulting halves so that the frame slats intersect and fasten them with self-tapping screws.

The frames must be absolutely identical, this is the only way you will get a high-quality result.

We looked at the first method of creating a wooden lattice. This method is the simplest and most popular. Decorative grilles are also made in other ways. Let's consider them further.

Method number 2. If there are no tools for tenoning

Algorithm for creating sheathing

We make small samples at the ends of the wooden blocks. Then we dock them and firmly connect them with wood glue. You should also strengthen the corners with self-tapping screws (drive one self-tapping screw into each corner).
We make two identical wooden frames. Then we attach slats to the side of each beam. Now you have a fold.

Filling

Now, in order to get a high-quality wooden lattice for the gazebo with your own hands, you need to start filling it. To do this, you need to make the same slats that are used in the fold. The slats are placed diagonally at an equal distance from each other.

Assembly

Let's start assembling the grille. Let's fold the two frames so that the slats intersect and fasten them with self-tapping screws. At the same time, the frames can be sharpened a little for better joining.

It is also worth placing between the frames mosquito net. This will help you avoid a huge accumulation of insects in the gazebo and will reliably protect you from bites.

Grating processing

To give wood best view, and also for a longer service life of the wood, it should be treated with paint or varnish. Usually the varnish is applied in several layers. It is better to process before assembling the grating.
Here is one example of how to make a finished lattice for a gazebo.

And here is a version of the finished lattice on the gazebo.

Method number 3: “In secret”

When using this method, you do not need to stack the slats on top of each other, but recess one into the other. To do this, it is necessary to mill or cut out grooves on each element that are half the thickness of the slats in depth and with a width equal to the width of the slats. Next, we insert one plank into another. This will create the effect of a whole canvas from which diamonds or squares are cut out. This product will look more unique and delicate.

If you need to make more durable and massive wooden gratings for the gazebo with your own hands, then you should take a thicker lath and block. You can make a grate as described above or use a different method. It consists in making one frame, not two. In this frame, recesses are cut for planks of the required size, equal to the thickness of the parts. Next, you need to secure the strips in the holes with screws or glue.

The advantage of this method is that you don't have to make a second frame. And such a grille will look much more unique.

Grill installation

In all cases, you will need to install the grate yourself at the very end in the place prepared for it. When installing, be sure to align the product relative to load-bearing walls while using a hammer. You need to knock until the edges are even with the front side of the vertical posts. Once you have aligned the grille, you can begin attaching the product. It is necessary to attach the side bars to the supporting beams using self-tapping screws. The fasteners should be recessed into the wood and then covered with putty.

Lattice decoration

To give a wooden lattice a more presentable look, you can use various decorations. The bindweed plant will fit perfectly into the interior of a summer cottage, but do not forget that such a plant also needs care. It is necessary to periodically trim the plant with pruning shears, and also water it about once a week. required quantity water. Such plants include climbing rose, girl's grapes, actinidia and others.

You can also paint the trellis a color that matches the color of the plant. This will add special contrast and style to your gazebo.

Let's add originality

Now let's look at more difficult option how to make wooden gratings for a gazebo with your own hands. The main difference is more complex structures lies in their design. For example, a rhombus can be double or triple. Grilles are also combined with various figured and carved elements.

You can create almost any shape of the lattice, harmoniously decorating it to your taste. The photo shows various options grating design.

You can go even further and make a lattice from cut tree branches. Such a grill will certainly not leave anyone indifferent and will attract everyone’s attention. Manufacturing should begin with a frame made of thick branches. These branches need to be connected with self-tapping screws. Then the space inside the frame must be filled with thinner branches, arranging them as you please. You can attach the branches to the frame using either tight wire or self-tapping screws.

Shape of the lattice for the gazebo

The most common lattice shape is square or rectangle. And this is quite logical and convenient. But if you want to give your gazebo a unique look, you can make the top of the lattice broken or curved. The slatted cornice looks great in the shape of an arch. You can choose any other shape, it all depends solely on your imagination.

A do-it-yourself wooden lattice for a gazebo will significantly save your money and fit perfectly into the interior of your summer cottage. Moreover, as we found out, it is not at all difficult to make. With the help of wooden gratings, you will make your site unusual and stylish. This will greatly improve appearance vegetable garden and will show you a true gardener.

Making a wooden lattice for a gazebo with your own hands is a fun and simple activity for home handyman. Moreover, it is also beautiful and inexpensive.

For a master it won’t be special labor make a wooden lattice for the gazebo, and decorating the territory of the structure will delight all family members.

In today's world, we strive to make our lives more comfortable. To do this, you not only need to give up bad habits and use the correct one, healthy diet. You should think about spending time comfortably fresh air beneficial for the whole family. The best way out- this is a gazebo on a backyard or summer cottage, which can protect from the sweltering sun, bad weather and wind. You can make a nice and comfortable gazebo yourself.

It is not only functional, but also truly attractive. And if you add to it original decorative grilles, which will serve not only as a visual fence, but also as decorated elements of the building, then your neighbors, acquaintances and friends will envy you. How to properly make wooden gratings for a gazebo or veranda yourself, with your own hands?

Many people call such decorative elements trellises. You can make such products for a gazebo or assemble decorative, braided ones from such structures. beautiful plants partition walls for the garden or cute small fences around flower beds.

Sometimes it is allowed to insert plastic elements into the decorative design, which can also add originality to the final appearance of the product.

Types of wooden gratings for a gazebo or veranda

The design of gazebos with gratings depends both on the functionality of the product you plan and on the design of the gazebo itself. It can only be limited by your imagination: there are no limits to the variety of designs that can be realized by making gazebo bars with your own hands.

Depending on the appearance of the gazebo, the sheathing can be arched, filling top part spans of the gazebo, or completely fill the openings. Even instead of a gazebo roof, you can make an openwork and lightweight structure that will save you from the scorching sun in summer. To decorative design The gazebo turned out beautiful, it would not be amiss to first draw its expected appearance and make drawings of the lattice, according to which it will be easy to assemble the structure in the future.

The decorative slats themselves, which carry the main design theme of the gazebo, can be connected in 2 ways: simply overlapping, forming cruciform design, and also overlapping, but with the obligatory production of grooves. In the latter case, the lattice turns out to be more aesthetic, made as if from 1 solid sheet of wood.

The elements of the gratings can also intersect at right angles, the design of the product can be embodied in the form of rhombuses, or it can be made between the slats different distances for enlargement, etc.: it all depends on your taste and imagination. Grilles made not just from rectangular bars, but made with cuts and notches in certain places, look more artistic and elegant.

Tools and materials

A decorative lattice for a gazebo requires very few materials and tools to make. This a budget option, which will give your gazebo a nice and aesthetic look. You will need:

  1. Wood saw.
  2. Nails.
  3. Self-tapping screws.
  4. Impregnation.
  5. Wood varnish.
  6. Bars.
  7. Reiki.

You need to carefully select lumber for the lattice. The slats and planks should not have cracks or chips: such wood will not suit you, do not buy it.

Wooden grilles are the most popular and sought-after design element today. garden gazebos. Usually the most suitable ones are selected for their manufacture. the best varieties wood:

  • beech, the wood of which has a pleasant pink tint;
  • oak is a very strong and durable material with a clearly defined structure;
  • larch is a material that is not afraid of rotting, an excellent wood for use in conditions of exposure to the external environment;
  • ash is a durable material with an excellent light-colored structure;
  • pine, which is beautifully processed.

Other types of wood can be used if the structure of the wood is not important and the structure will be covered with a layer of paint rather than a clear varnish that reveals and enhances the structural effect of the wooden product.

Getting started - making the frame

Oak, larch, pine, etc. are used to make gratings.

To make the frame you will need 4 bars with a cross section of 20x45 mm. dimensions the assembled frame should allow it to be inserted into the opening that we want to decorate with a decorative grille. It is best to connect the bars together using a “comb” system of grooves and tenons or a more complex “dovetail” system. If you don't have the proper carpentry experience, you can join the pieces by simply sawing the ends at a 45° angle and joining them using glue and screws or nails.

Next, along the inner perimeter of the frame, we install strips with a section of 10x20 mm. For 1 frame you will need 8 such planks. They will visually cover the ends of the grille itself, while acting as a fold for its installation. You don't have to install folded strips on both sides if you don't need to cover the ends of the grille slats. One decorative grille requires 2 frames of the same size.

It should be noted that all parts of the future product must be treated with impregnation designed specifically for wood, which increases the durability of the material.

Most often, these small structures are decorated with beautiful wooden grilles.

Today, if desired, you can purchase or order ready-made option such decor. However, unfortunately, it is quite expensive. Therefore, perhaps it will be more interesting for someone to make it themselves. Read about what wooden grilles for gazebos can be and what the technology for assembling them is in this article.

How to make your own wood grill

A high-quality wooden lattice will make the gazebo aesthetically pleasing and attractive. Using this decorative element, despite its apparent simplicity, will definitely add a touch of grace and lightness to its design.

Design features

So, let's figure out how to make a wooden lattice for a gazebo with your own hands. Structurally, it consists of the following elements:

  • Two wooden frames giving the structure rigidity.
  • Crossing slats inserted between them.

The main elements of a wooden lattice are slats and a frame made of bars

How to make frames?

Do-it-yourself sheathing frames for gazebos are most often made from bars with a cross-section of 20x45 mm. The easiest way to connect them is “in a tenon”.

When assembling the frame with your own hands, the easiest way is to use the “through tenon” method (first picture)

This fastening is done like this:

  • Wooden blocks are marked in thickness into three equal parts.
  • In two, a tenon is chosen, in two, a groove.

At the ends of the bars, according to the markings, you need to select grooves and tenons

  • The grooves are connected to the ridges using glue.
  • Additionally, the tongue-and-groove lock is secured with two nails. Their caps can be bitten off with wire cutters or sunk into wood, followed by sealing the resulting nests with putty.
  • It is advisable to also screw a self-tapping screw into each connection.
Important: The second frame is made simultaneously with the first, using its elements as a template. This is necessary so that these two structures are absolutely identical in size.

Manufacturing of gratings

The production of wooden gratings for gazebos continues by stuffing the mesh itself. It is assembled from slats of small thickness and width. They need to be attached to each of the two frames diagonally (at an angle of 45 degrees). The distance between the slats is usually about 5cm.

Stuffing slats and connecting frames into a single structure

Advice: In case if decorative mesh will cover the walls from top to bottom, the step can be made larger (about 10 cm).

At the next stage, both frames with slats should be varnished to oil based. Apply it in at least two layers with a preliminary primer. Next, the frames are simply placed on top of each other so that the slats intersect. The result is a lattice with diamond-shaped cells. The frames are fastened with four self-tapping screws at the corners. After decorative lattice for the gazebo will be completely ready, it will be varnished again.

Usually the sheathing of gazebos is varnished

On a note: If desired, you can replace the varnish with oil for exterior use. It tolerates temperature changes much better and is not at all afraid of water.

Lattice gazebos: what the design could be

There are many ways to design gazebos using lattice. Such fences, parapets and cornices can have different sizes, patterns, shapes and colors.

Using a lattice you can build a very beautiful gazebo

What could the drawing look like?

Above we looked at the technology for manufacturing the simplest grill for gazebos. However, there are other options for this decor. Diamonds can be, for example, double. Sometimes slats are placed in the middle of frames more often than at the edges (or vice versa). This also allows you to make the grille design original.

Double wooden mesh can look quite unusual

On a note: Sometimes such sheathing for a gazebo is made of slats with teeth cut out along the edges. This option also looks quite aesthetically pleasing.

Often lattices are combined with carved and figured wooden elements. However, this should be done carefully. Often such combinations look unnecessarily pretentious.

What shape could it be?

The finished gratings are attached to support pillars gazebo frame, and therefore usually have a rectangular or square shape. However, even in this case, you can show a little imagination. For example, make the top of the parapet grille not straight, but curved or broken. Slatted cornices are often made in the form of an arch.

Photo of a gazebo with an unusually shaped mesh

What should the color be?

A wooden mesh for a gazebo does not have to be varnished. If desired, it can be painted. For example, white versions of this decor look very stylish and modern.

The white mesh design looks very modern

Of course, a grille of a different color can look beautiful. The main thing is to try to harmoniously combine it with the shades of other structural elements of the gazebo.
