The task was as follows:
In my car trunk (Octavia Station Wagon) there is free space above the wheel arches, like many other car models, where I put a fishing rod and spinning rod, but in fabric cases the gear is still prone to breakage, so it was decided to get a homemade tube for rod storage
The option of a store-bought tube was out of the question due to the size of the distance between the arches (mine is 120cm), choosing a ready-made one for this length is a bit difficult, and I didn’t want to sacrifice even a centimeter, because I already had a spinning rod with a transport length of 119.5 cm. Plus, almost all ready-made tubes come round shape, which was also not desirable, because it could roll off the arches when moving and maneuvering, so the common option of making it from a round sewer pipe was eliminated. Well, the price of more or less decent ones started from 1000 rubles and above.
Thinking my thoughts, I came across Era ventilation ducts in a hardware store, which were both round and rectangular section, which was exactly what was required for my needs
The plastic from which they are made is quite durable, and at the same time not hard, so it will not crack from accidental impacts.
The size that suited me was 120x60mm, which I purchased to make a tube with my own hands. But a question arose with the rectangular end caps. Apparently they don’t exist in nature, I looked at both Era and the Khokhlyat manufacturer, so I had to take rectangular connectors with valves.
I cut off the piece I needed ventilation duct length 120cm. I cut off the side of the connectors on one side, almost right under the valve. Because it opens and closes freely, fixed it in the closed state and coated it with glue for plastic window sills (but I think any glue for gluing plastics will do). The result of this shamanism was end caps.
But due to the internal thickness of the plugs, the tube (which is not bad for a spinning rod of my size) increased slightly in length, and after calculations and estimates, the air duct itself was cut off by about 1 cm.
Inside the made plugs I glued pieces of foamed polyethylene (backing under the laminate) to soften and absorb possible impacts of the rod tips.
The plugs themselves sit quite tightly on the box, but to be on the safe side, I tightened small self-tapping screws with bitten ends on one (blind) end, and wrapped a little electrical tape on the other.
Next we had to come up with something with the handle. The handle was first taken from a package of blankets, I think many people have such packages.
The handle itself is rubber and has a flexible connection. In the transport state, it practically does not protrude, which is quite convenient, but after loading the rod into the tube, I decided to abandon it, fearing for a certain flimsiness and unreliability of the design, although for those with light weight gear, this option may be suitable.
I bought a new handle from a sewing and weaving accessories store - it’s rigid and durable. Which was attached to the middle of the tube.
When attaching the handle, a problem arose - how to tighten the screws from the inside of the box with your own hands; your hand couldn’t reach the middle of the tube, and you couldn’t see where to screw the screws. I solved the problem in the following way: I marked a place for the handle on the air duct on both sides, drilled holes with a diameter for screws on one side, and 1.5-2 times larger holes on the other side. And using a thin screwdriver with a magnetic tip, the handle was screwed on.
In principle, the extra holes didn’t spoil it much appearance. Next, you can cover the tube with fabric, but I’m against this idea.
I refused because smooth plastic is easier to clean and wash than fabric.
In this homemade convenient tube, I can easily accommodate a spinning rod, a feeder and a lapdog fishing rod, and the tube itself lies on the wheel arches, without interfering with the loading and unloading of things in the trunk, and the gear is always with me.
As a result, the costs for the tube were as follows:
- rectangular plastic air duct 120x60mm length 2m. -315r. (but I used 1.2m, so I spent about 240r)
(according to the Era catalog there are also 1.5m and 1m, but I needed another piece for home ventilation, so I killed 2 birds with one stone.)

In total we have about 430 rubles. and a little personal time and effort, but the tube made will be exactly the size you need, to suit your fishing rods and trunk dimensions.
There are a variety of spinning rod tubes that are sold in stores. However, most fishermen prefer to make a spinning rod tube with their own hands. At the next stage, we make a cover for the case and make several small holes in it to sew on the foam rubber. You can use a sponge for this. On final stage work, we give the tube the proper appearance - we cover it with fabric.
As a result, you will get a tube for your spinning rods, which you will make yourself, and will be even better than the analogues sold.
Necessary available materials

To transport fishing rods, you need to equip the tube with a lid. A thick layer of leather can be used. It is necessary to measure the diameter plastic profile and add 3 mm to it. We cut out a circle of leather of this size. A slightly larger size will not allow the lid to fall inside the profile. We also cut out several more similar parts from leather, but this time they should be 1.5 mm smaller than the diameter of the tube.
All that remains is to glue the leather parts together. Bottom part the lids will fit tightly plastic pipe, and the top element bigger size won't let her fall inside. The covers, which are made of leather, are practical.
Homemade cover for spinning rod

To make a tube version for storing one fishing rod, you need to buy a sewer pipe with a diameter of 50 mm. This will be ideal. If we consider a larger diameter, then it will be suitable for several spinning rods.
Required tube materials:
- pipe 50 mm (you must first measure desired length, in accordance with the parameters of the rod);
- two plugs;
- fabric for covering;
- foam;
- glue.
If desired, one side of the tube can be sealed. To do this, first apply adhesive to the plug and secure it. Fishing rods must match the size of the tube. When sawing off the pipe, add 2 cm on each side, since the foam rubber will be attached - this is very important.
How to make a cover for a fishing rod?
You can do it simply and purchase a plug for a plastic pipe, which will serve as a cover for the cover. If for some reason there is no plug and it is impossible to get it out, you can make a lid from improvised materials. Cut a circle out of leather.
The diameter of such a part should be 1.5 mm larger than the tube itself. We cut out the second circle so that its diameter is 1 mm smaller than the tube. How to cover a tube with fabric?
For these purposes, it is better to choose fabrics that are not too dense in structure, so it will be much easier to work with. The stretchy and elastic fabric will fit perfectly on the hard cover, and if necessary, it can be removed and washed.
It is necessary to sew a cover from an elastic material that will be a couple of millimeters smaller than the tube. To do this, you should first prepare a pattern and mark it with chalk. The lower part of the cover is sewn with strong threads in a straight line, only then a side seam is made, which runs perpendicular to the bottom.
You can also equip the case with additional pockets in which you can store fishing lures. The pockets are sewn on top of the cover itself or Velcro is used, with which they will be attached to the tube itself.
How to make a handle?
If you want to equip your tube with a handle, then you need to attach it to the base of the pipe with bolts, this will be more reliable. The handle itself can be purchased at any bag store or tailor shop. Material for tube The easiest thing to do is a simple PVC pipe 2m long. and diameter 50mm.
I’ll say right away that the tube is made only for a specific spinning rod. So that there are no extra centimeters.
What do we need for this:

These are the main necessary things - the dimensions of the material depend on the design and size of the tube.
We take the longest leg of the spinning rod (some saw the handle, and it turns out that the tip is longer than the butt), measure its length to a whole number, and preferably add another 4 cm. This is necessary so that under the spinning rod there is foam rubber 2 cm thick, and 1 or 1.5 cm is spent on the lid, and so that there is a little free space left, 0.5 or 1 cm in total.
I'll write it using my own example.
The length of the elbow is 110 cm, the length of the pipe is 113 cm, we measure and saw off, preferably straight away, since there will be no second chance - that’s why it is advisable to leave at least 4 cm. Because then, if suddenly, we’ll cut off 1 cm for alignment.
The side that was sawed off will be the bottom, since the top is needed even for the lid.
Then we insert the butt into the pipe and see how far it does not fit.
Then we make the pipe oval (bend it), and now we see that the first ring of the butt runs freely along the entire length of the future spinning tube
When we bend, we try to bend one edge so that the resulting profile resembles an egg. You also need to strictly ensure that the fold seam goes strictly in a straight line and does not resemble
At the bottom of the tube we make two holes from the edge with an awl, opposite each other in order to sew on the foam rubber. We cut it from a sponge for washing dishes, or whatever is at hand. The only thing is that it should not be hard. This means they inserted it into the tube, having previously cut out the outline of the tube. And they grabbed it with a couple of stitches. This completes the work with the pipe.
Next, we take the material for covering. The bottom is sewn in a straight line, and the longitudinal seam line should make an angle of 90 degrees. with a bottom seam. So that the resulting ears will then be threaded inside, and they will not interfere (mostly for aesthetics). The length of the fabric must be a minimum of 10 cm.
Since the diameter of the pipe is 50mm, we sew the cover up to 45mm.. It also depends on the fabric - some stretch, others are like tarpaulin, rigid and do not stretch. tube for spinning rod
The diameter of the cover is smaller so that the tube does not dangle in it, but is strictly covered with fabric (the fabric should not move from the punched holes from the needle), which will not toss and turn on it. Also keep in mind that there should be no more than 1cm from the edge of the seam. and at least 1 cm. The final seam must be stitched with very strong threads at least twice, and twice three seams at a width of 1 cm. Also keep in mind that when you pull it onto the pipe, there will be a seam inside, which takes away more diameter from what was left. When we have turned it out and pulled it out (straightened), we begin the long and tedious work of pulling it onto the pipe. This process is long and you need to be patient and watch the seam. It needs to be laid on one plane, and you need to make sure that it doesn’t twist, again aesthetics
When this is finished, we measure the remaining centimeters and leave about 5 cm, this is not critical, less is undesirable. Since if the seam comes loose, you will have to remove it and sew it up, which I think no one will want to go through this again
We left 5 cm and singe the edge (again depending on the fabric) with a match, the edge becomes harder and the fabric does not unravel. And we bend it inward. No need to glue it, it just doesn't make sense
I make it from leather, I take hard leather with a thickness of 4-5 mm, if you find something thicker, that’s fine. We cut out the top trim according to the profile of the tube, but by 3 mm. more on all sides. This is necessary so that the lid does not fall inside. Then we cut out two or three layers of leather according to the profile, but there was 1 or 1.5 mm more on all sides. The total depth of the cap that goes into the tube must be at least 1.5 cm.. Or better yet, 2 cm..
We rivet all the layers of leather, remembering to fold them into an egg shape. Before this, I put a small loop - it’s convenient to open, and it doesn’t get lost, since it’s tied.
Now the whole cover sharp knife we adjust it so that it fits into the tube, but so that it does not require much effort.
It is sewn by hand, and the diameter is slightly smaller than a covered tube. These straps do not stretch, and if the diameter is too small, it will not be possible to wear it. The width of the tape is 35-45 mm. It will be more convenient.
The handle and strap are made from the same tape. The belt is also sewn by hand and is adjustable in length, which is very convenient whether you want it under a backpack or to put it on a backpack comfortably.
This tube weighs 400 grams without a spinning rod (dry, so if it rains, the fabric will get wet and will be larger.)
Then, having measured everything and getting the remaining free space for the spinning rod, I achieved a length of 112.5 cm

As a result, it is inexpensive, very practical, since the pipe does not even bend if you step on it (but this is not advisable), but in a crowded transport, or getting pinched in the doors of an elevator or bus, your favorite spinning rod is not in any danger.
For cartoon spins there are no problems at all; there is no need to adjust by millimeters.
For jerk spins, the handle is separate from the whip, the handle is in the backpack, and the whip is in a tube that is made under it.
The tube is of this type, short, and does not interfere with fishing at all.

The main requirement was the ability to not bend at the joint under load, which was achieved, but it turned out to be a little awkward to fold, but this is the basic option.
We fold it and put it in a drawstring case with fastenings for a strap.
I’ll also say a few words about the spinning rod cover itself. IN spinning tube fits in a case - the knees do not rattle and do not hit each other.
But some cases are hard, I don't use them. They are either too big, and the valve is healthy with all sorts of strings or Velcro - there is no point in it.
I sew the covers myself, from fabric that is thin, velvety, rolls over your fingers - and very beautiful.
A cover without a valve - the back is in a tube, but the cover is 3 cm longer than the back - this serves as an intermediate link between the lid.
And putting spinning in a tube in the soft case we can clearly feel how it fits in there. Easy or hard. And in a hard case we can break our UL and won’t even feel anything - we also need to pay attention to this.
