Creating stripes

This way we will separate the material for the top and leg sections. Now you must take the first strip and apply glue to its surface. After that, place the next strip on top and repeat the process until you reach the last board.

Now it’s time to firmly clamp the entire surface of the future tabletop. You can do this any way you like, but it's better to pinch the ends first, then the middle. Make sure the clamps you use are good enough to hold the strips firmly in place.

Remove the clamps

Once the glue has created a reliable connection within the allotted time indicated on the package, slowly remove the clamps. You will have excess glue all over the surface and the stripes may not be uniform. At this point you can do a few things:

  • pass the glued surface through the machine and let it do all the work for you;
  • use a plane for leveling;
  • Sand everything with a sander until smooth.

Once you are done with these steps, repeat them for the other un-glued strips.


Cutting holes

Now that you've done the hard part of the job, it's time to cut the glued strips to size. As I said earlier, we will cut one set - 90 cm long. Now for the other set we need to do some simple math. The thickness of the top cover is about 4 cm, so to get a total height of 45 cm we must subtract 4 cm from 45 cm, which gives us 41 cm. Two legs need to be made of this length by cutting two sections of the second set of strips.

The next step is to drill holes for wooden pegs, which will give the structure rigidity. For this project we will use long rounds with a diameter of 2 cm.

It is important not only to process the material efficiently, but also to securely fix the structural elements. To do this, it is recommended to use wood screws and metal corners (if necessary). To prevent cracking of the material during the process of screwing in the screws, it is recommended to pre-drill holes that will be slightly (about 2 mm) smaller than the diameter of the screws. This will not only reduce the risk of damage to parts, but will also simplify the workflow.

To increase the reliability of fixing parts of the product, you can additionally use wood glue. In this case, the work is carried out as follows: the parts to be joined are sanded to perfect smoothness, cleaned of dust, lubricated with glue, pressed tightly against each other, fixed with clamps and left in this position until completely dry, and then fastened with self-tapping screws.

Making a table of a standard design

Then, in the same way, you need to cut and sand the end walls (that is, the legs), as well as the inner wall of the table. At the next stage, the structure is assembled.   2. FSF is a moisture-resistant non-laminated plywood, usually birch, that is exceptionally waterproof. This is plywood with a wide range of applications, it is also used as a furniture material; phenol-formaldehyde glue is used for its production.
  3. FC is birch plywood produced using urea-formaldehyde resin.
  4. FBS - bakelite plywood, also called “marine” or “Finnish” plywood. This plywood is coated with bakelite varnish, which gives it special physical and chemical properties. Bakelite plywood does not change its performance under the influence of hot climates, moisture and sea water.

Regarding the safety of using plywood in furniture production for a long time there are disputes. For example, FSF plywood is made using resins with phenolic compounds, while FC uses urea (ammonia). According to GOST, only formaldehyde content is regulated. The question arises, what is the emission of formaldehyde and what level is safe? FSF plywood has lower emissions, which means it is safer.

All Russian factories plywood has an E1 safety certificate, plywood that meets the E0 certificate is available on the market, and some factories are certified to the “safer” CARB 1 and CARB 2 standards.

From the point of view of furniture safety, it is better to avoid Chinese plywood and opt for Finnish manufacturers who strictly comply with the requirements of the standards, and Finnish resins contain a minimum of formaldehyde. When choosing plywood for a nursery, you should also avoid laminated products that contain a high level of formaldehyde. Marine grade mahogany plywood. Marine plywood made from gaboon tree veneer (Acuomea Kleinea), native to the Congo, can be sourced from factories in Holland, Italy, Greece, France, Israel and the USA. A variety of this type of plywood is plywood made from the veneer of the Shorea tree, native to the Philippines, such plywood is more common under the names "meranti" and "luan", commercial grades "yellow luan", "white luan", "red luan" are also available. and "red meranti". Typically this plywood comes in a thickness of at least 6.2mm, and the okume grade can be found in thinner sheets. The sheet size often does not exceed 1.22x2.44 m.

Plywood made of birch, cedar, beech, pine. As a rule, this is plywood with a wide range of applications, made from available wood in the country of origin. Sometimes it’s a pity to look at the poor guest with a cup of tea in his hands, which there is nowhere to put - except corner sofa and plasma, there is nothing in the room. How useful would a small table be for all sorts of little things that are inevitable in everyday life. Today we will look at how to make a table with your own hands, with a minimum of effort and money.

Preparing materials and tools for work

The set of tables that we see in the picture was created in a very ingenious way. The fact is that the lower frames are cut in such a way that two different parts for different tables are obtained from one slab. There is practically no waste. So, what we will need for work:

  • MDF board dimensions 22x500x1000 mm - 2 pcs.
  • Round tabletop with a diameter of 1100 mm.
  • Round tabletop with a diameter of 800 mm. When considering the question of how to make a table at a lower cost, you can buy covers in the store, or you can cut them out yourself. Then it is best to purchase two standard panels measuring 22x2800x2070 mm. The leftover MDF will always be useful to the master.
  • Melamine edge.
  • Dowels or furniture corners.

List of required tools:

  • Electric jigsaw.
  • Fine-toothed saw.
  • Sanding machine or sandpaper of different grits.
  • Drill, drill bits.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Manual frezer.
  • Tape measure, ruler, pencil.
  • Compass (or cord, button and pencil) for drawing circles.
  • Iron and paper cutter.

Cutting and assembling the lower frames of the table

You can cut the slab into parts in the cutting shop. At home, the cuts will turn out a little worse, but the craftsmen adapt as best they can. Here are some tips for cutting chipboard and MDF:

  • We stick adhesive tape along the cutting line, which also serves as a limiter and fastening element.
  • We use a narrow saw with a fine tooth. When working, hold it at right angles to the surface of the stove.
  • We saw with light pressure, without making much effort.
  • We clean small chips and creases with a round file. We move it from the edges of the cut to the middle so as not to crumble the edges.
  • Following these recommendations, we can cut out a round table with our own hands without any big problems.
  • We mark the slab for the lower frame as indicated in the drawing. We cut off triangles with a leg of 100 mm on both sides. We have a trapezoidal blank, from which we will cut out two lower parts for different tables.

Now from the middle of the short side we draw a semicircle with a diameter of 350 mm and cut it out. We retreat from the top line of the semicircle 300 mm. Maintaining strict parallelism, draw a line and cut off the upper segment of the circle along it. The resulting chord should have a length of approximately 360 mm. We repeat all operations with the second slab, strictly maintaining the accepted dimensions. Making a table with your own hands has become simple and clear, isn’t it?

On each of the four parts we make a cut in the center, with a depth of half the height of the taken workpiece. The cuts are needed to connect two identical elements in half a tree, obtaining a finished frame for the tabletop. It is not necessary to use glue - then, if desired, the structures can be separated and stored in the pantry.

Manufacturing of countertops

We draw a large circle like this: take a cord with a length equal to the radius of the drawn circle. We attach one end of it to the center of the plate (with a button or a nail), and tie a pencil to the other end. Stretch the string and draw a circle.

It's even easier to complete this task using a strip of cardboard or a thin strip. At the ends of the strip we make two holes - for a nail and for a pencil. The distance between them should be equal to the radius of the circle. We attach a nail to the center of the workpiece and rotate the strip around its axis, drawing a line with a pencil.

We cut out a round tabletop with a jigsaw or electric hacksaw. The latter usually has several attachments for cutting different materials.

We guide the tip of the tool along the line of the circle without pressing or jerking. It is better to go beyond the markings from outside the line than from inside. The excess can be removed with a file. In the second case, you will have to reduce the diameter of the entire circle. Having cut out both tabletops, we go through the cuts manual router with end mill. Next, sand the ends with emery cloth, screwing it onto a wooden block.

The ends of all MDF parts are lined with melamine edge. To do this, place the edge on the saw cut and iron it with a hot iron. The adhesive in the film melts and sticks it to the end of the part.

Table assembly

We attach the lower underframes to the tabletops using furniture corners. There is a second option - install the cover on the dowels by drilling blind sockets for fasteners in the table cover and the ends of the frame. To control the depth of the holes, apply electrical tape to the drill. If you plan to disassemble the tables in the future, you should not glue the joints. This completes the assembly work.

As for the table drawing, everything is simple. We make: 2 legs measuring 76 cm high, 46 cm wide, a table top measuring 100 cm long, 60 cm wide and a stiffening bar measuring 77 cm long, 52 cm wide.

Making a countertop

To make a tabletop, we need to cut a sheet of plywood in half into two parts. As you remember, we took a sheet of plywood measuring 152x152 cm.
Dividing the sheet in half, we got two rectangles measuring 152x76 cm. Here, one of the squares will go on the tabletop, measure 100 cm in length and 60 cm in width, draw lines with a pencil or pen.

We take a jigsaw and cut along the lines that we drew. Peel off the remaining masking tape from all sawed sides. Now, take a round shape, we took a metal bowl, you can use whatever you like. And we put it on the corners of the tabletop, so that we form a semicircle, that is, we round off the sharp corners, something like this:


We make curves on all four corners and also tape along the lines. Carefully saw off with a jigsaw.


After sawing and removing the remaining masking tape, you need to take a sander, put a sanding belt with a grit size of No. 100 on it and sand the rounded corners.


The tabletop is almost ready, all that remains is to sand down all the unevenness on the surface of the plywood. Taking into account the fact that the plywood is more or less even, it won’t take much time, this is how the tabletop will ultimately look like:


Let's start making the table stiffener

Stiffening bar or otherwise called lateral stability. It plays the role of a support for the table, thanks to this strip we will fix the legs of the table and the table top, thus eliminating the instability and the structure will become stable.

We take the second half of the sheet and mark the rectangle - 77x52 cm. We also cover the lines with tape and cut them with a jigsaw.

Making two table legs

It is difficult to make a plywood table with four legs, so we will make two wide, beautiful and voluminous legs. The remainder of the sheet is just enough for two pieces. We mark two rectangles, each measuring 76x46 cm, where 76 cm is the height of the legs, and 46 cm is the width.

We cut according to the same pattern. Ready template We transfer the legs to the second rectangle, make markings along it and saw off again. Now we sand all the blanks, except for the tabletop, and this is the set of finished blanks we got:



Assembling the table frame

Let's start assembling the frame dining table. We take the lateral stability and put marks where the furniture bolts will be tightened. Be careful here, because it is very easy to make a mistake at this step.

Let's get down to business, take the stiffness bar and divide it into three equal parts. If you did according to our instructions, then you should have marks for drilling holes: the first mark is 7 cm, the second is 26.5 cm and the third is 45 cm. The first mark should be made from the top of the plank, where the tabletop lies .


Take a wood drill with a diameter of 5 mm. and make holes in the ends of the stability bar. The drilling depth should be 5.5-6 cm, since the length of a standard furniture bolt is 5 cm. We transfer the same dimensions that we made on the stiffener bar to the table legs.

We also begin to place marks on top of the legs, where the table top will go. We divide the legs in half widthwise from top to bottom, draw a thin line with a pencil and mark it at 7 cm, 26.5 cm and 45 cm and make through holes with the same wood drill.

After all the holes are made, take one leg and attach all three furniture bolts. We attach the stability bar and tighten all the bolts with a screwdriver. On the other side we place the second leg and also screw it on.

Now, take the tabletop and place the table frame on top. We measure the same distance over the entire area of ​​the tabletop and screw it in using furniture corners with wood screws.

Since the thickness of the plywood is 18 mm. Wood screws should be 15 mm. The product is ready, all that remains is to process the table (carry out paint and varnish work), here, if desired, you can paint, stain, varnish the product or in any other way.
