S. Usachev “Clock”
Hours go by days after days.
The clock runs after century...
- What's your hurry, Clock? -
A man once asked.
The clock was terribly surprised.
We thought about it.
We stopped.

History of the invention and development of watches.

The first primitive concepts for measuring time (day, morning, day, noon, evening, night) were subconsciously suggested to ancient people by the regular change of seasons, the change of day and night, the movement of the Sun and Moon across the vault of heaven.
The history of the clock is very interesting and educational. It was important for a person to know exact time In order to optimally plan their actions, sun, water, and mechanical clocks were gradually invented. The result is this moment Those complex mechanisms that can be seen in modern stores serve.
Origin of the name of the word "clock".
The word “clock” appeared in everyday life in the 14th century, its basis was the Latin “clocca”, meaning bell. And before that, the first experiments in determining time were associated with observing the movements of the sun across the sky. In 3500 BC, the first sundial. The principle of their work was to observe the shadow formed in sunlight, since the position and length of the shadow changes at different periods of time.
In Greece, they came to the conclusion that it was necessary to divide the year into twelve months of thirty days each. Subsequently, the inhabitants of ancient Babylon and Egypt divided the day into hours, minutes, seconds, which played important role with the development of watch production.
Jost Bergey made the first watch using a minute hand in 1577. This product also had a minute hand, the oscillations of the pendulum turned gear, which, in turn, changed the position of the hands on the dial. The dial was graduated at 12 o'clock, so during the day the hand passed in a circle twice.
Currently, humanity has complex, reliable and high-precision watch movements, created using the latest scientific research and designed in a wide variety of styles.
Not regular watch, ideally matching the style of the interior of the room - this is always lucky element decor. Not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of functionality. Like these ones original watch you can do it yourself.
A watch is a necessary, useful and, in general, ordinary thing. Few people think about their design, because the main thing is that they show the time correctly.
But try to make a wall clock with your own hands - and you will notice that the atmosphere in this room has subtly changed.
Of course, we are not talking about assembling and adjusting the clock mechanism yourself - you should use a ready-made one, bought in a store or removed from an old watch. But you can really get creative with the design of the dial.

Step-by-step process for completing the work:

1. Glue two sheets of A4 cardboard onto an A3 sheet.

2. Using a compass, make a circle on cardboard and then cut it out.

3. We wrap the disks with tape.

4. We wrap a paper cord around the wire.

5. Then we wrap the wire around a round stick to make a curl.

6. Find the middle of the circle using a ruler.

7. Glue the disks and start decorating the clock.

8. Cut out hearts from the disks and wrap them with ribbon.

9. We decorate the heart with red sisal balls and glue them to the clock.

10. Glue sisal and rhinestones into the middle of the disks. We install hands with a clock mechanism on the central disk.

Something as small as an ordinary watch can become a central element of the interior if it is made by hand. The main thing about these watches is their uniqueness and the soul put into them.

Currently, DIY watch decoupage has gained enormous popularity! This is not surprising: in an age of stress, sometimes you want to do something for the soul, and if it also has a functional and aesthetic purpose, then this hobby is simply doomed to success!

Watch decoupage technique

If previously it was difficult to get materials and templates for decoupage, now they are available in abundance in any bookstore or creativity department. You can easily purchase stencils, dials, blanks, hands, accessories or other attributes for decoupage watches. Therefore, this newfangled hobby is an acceptable option for beginners.

Let's look at the technique of decoupaging a watch with your own hands step by step.

  1. Preparing the stencil. So, you purchased a watch blank in advance from a craft store (as in the photo).
  2. The surface of the workpiece should first be prepared: sanded if the watch is wooden or degreased if it is plastic.
  3. Create a background image as in the photo. You can choose any style depending on your preferences or the interior features of the room you want to decorate with a future masterpiece.
  4. Glue the selected picture onto the blank (see photo).
  5. Advice! Torn edges It’s easier to mask, so it’s better not to cut out the image, but simply tear it off the paper with your hands.

    You can glue the picture onto the template using either PVA glue diluted with water or special glue for decoupage. The main thing here is to act carefully, avoiding wrinkles in the picture. After this, the blank for the future watch should be dried and coated with acrylic varnish, after which the blank should be dried again. Repeat this pattern three times.

    This technique is described in more detail in the video at the end of the text.

    Choosing a style

    Before you start decoupaging the watch yourself, you should decide on the style of the future masterpiece. The following decoupage options are now most popular:

  • Provence;
  • vintage or antique;
  • "Hollywood".

First, you should choose the room in which you plan to hang your future masterpiece. For example, if this is a kitchen, then some kind of romantic sketch or a Hollywood-style clock would look inappropriate in it. On the contrary, a clock in Provence or vintage style will fit perfectly into the interior of most kitchens.

Perhaps the Provence style is one of the most common and understandable. If the Provence and Vintage styles are somewhat reminiscent of each other, then the Hollywood style is fundamentally different from them. So, it is characterized by the following nuances:

  • Use as main following colors: black, red, white, blue. Whatever colors you choose, they should, if possible, contrast with each other and stand out from the background.
  • Maximum shine, the use of all kinds of rhinestones is encouraged.
  • Using images of famous Hollywood actors, preferably from the Golden Era of Hollywood: Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, etc. In this case, you will partially get a retro style.

All styles are suitable for beginners. You can familiarize yourself with these options by watching the video at the end of the text.

Features of dial decoupage

You can freely buy a ready-made dial in a store, but it’s much more interesting to make it yourself. So, the numbers on the clock can be made from almost the first objects that catch your eye. It all depends on your imagination and, of course, on the decoupage style of the watch.

Let's say you chose the Provence style. Then for the dial it would be appropriate to use wine bottle caps, dried lavender branches, and soap in the shape of small hearts. In addition, it is not necessary that there be numbers on the dial: just marking the divisions is enough.

Idea for a clock on a Pink Floyd record.
It is also convenient to make a clock on a plate because the center of the dial for the hands is precisely marked. However, it should be remembered that the round printing sticker in the center is difficult to “overlap” if it white. It would be more practical to use a plate with a red sticker for the base.

If decoupage is ordinary wall clock may seem boring, then we have saved another one for you original version– decoupage of a clock on a vinyl record. The technique of such decoupage is not much different from that described above, but it has its own characteristics:

  • First you need to prepare the plate by priming it with white paint. Let it dry for a while.
  • To apply a picture, it is better to use special napkins for decoupage. We tear off the two bottom layers and apply only the top one to the plate. Using a flat synthetic brush, apply glue over the napkin. Let it dry, then cover our workpiece with a layer of varnish. After drying, apply varnish again.

Attention! You need to use special varnish and glue for decoupage.

  • We mark the dial. For this you can use wine corks, shells and any other items for which your imagination is enough.

Advice! Apply paint with a dishwashing sponge.

  • We cover the watch with at least three layers of acrylic varnish.
  • We cover the sticker on the back of the plate with cardboard. We make a hole in the center and glue the clock mechanism. Attach the arrows and insert the batteries.

The original watch is ready!

My relatives renovated the kitchen. A wall clock is not enough to complete the interior. The old clock is working, but outwardly it doesn’t fit into the updated kitchen at all. It would be a pity to dispose of the watch; there is a dedicatory inscription on it. I'll try to breathe into them new life.

To work with the clock, let's take it apart. Dial, glass (not plastic, as in modern watches) and frame.

I didn’t even try to remove the clock mechanism, because... Upon careful inspection, I did not find any fastening elements. The dial will be accompanied by a careful rotation of the minute hand, this will complicate the work a little.
So let's start with the frame. I decided to cover it with fabric; I had just the right one in stock. color scheme. This is a fairly thick cotton fabric with elastane. When cutting it cuts quite a bit. We place the frame on the fabric and trace it with cutting chalk, making indents along the edges for folds.

Let's cut out our pattern. On outside Apply double-sided tape to the frames to secure the fabric before starting to tighten it.

After making small cuts in the corners and gluing double-sided tape inside the frame, we tighten it, carefully wrapping the edges of the fabric and gluing it onto the tape. I didn’t choose the adhesive tape by chance; the fabric sticks well to it. In this case, the glue would soak through the fabric and complicate the process.

Having finished fitting the frame, I tried it on the watch. It turned out great.

And we could stop there. But the factory decor of the dial tells us that this is not entirely a man-made product; it looks rather boring. In addition, relatives really wanted a wall clock with Roman numerals. So let's move on to the dial. The dial is molded from plastic, the numbers and letters on it are part of a solid structure. Therefore, I decided to putty the surface of the dial, leveling everything to zero. The height of the leg on which the arrows rotate allows us to apply 2-3 mm of putty.

Carefully rotating the hands, I walked over the entire surface of the dial.

The can of putty says that it dries from 3 to 24 hours, I decided to wait as long as possible to be on the safe side. A day later, I discovered microcracks on the surface and once again went through with putty, this time only rubbing these very cracks with a layer of less than 1 mm. The second layer took 5-6 hours to dry.

After complete drying, I lightly rubbed the surface with a small spatula, knocking down any unevenness, and wiped it with a damp sponge, removing small particles. Primed with two coats of white acrylic paint without water, with intermediate drying of each layer. And finally, I tinted the surface of the dial with the color of acrylic paint without water I needed, using chaotic strokes. The result is such an interesting texture.

I found Roman numerals on the Internet and, in addition to them, the Eiffel Tower, which matches the style of the kitchen. I printed out the image, and, placing the sheet of paper in a plastic file, outlined the drawing with black stained glass paint from baby set"Stained Glass". This paint turns into a sticky sticker when it dries.

A day later, the numbers were drying along with the dial, I transferred these stickers to the dial. I collected the watch and...

...I hope the relatives will be happy.

Clocks don't just tell the time and keep us from staying up late - they can also serve as impressive works of art to decorate our homes.

A beautiful and ornate watch may be too expensive, but there are many ways to make your own watch. All you need is a little time, creativity and motivation to get started, and you can create something completely different, something that no one else has, a thing that has no analogues in the world.

Floating wall clock

Collect all required material. To create a floating clock you will need the following tools:

  • adhesive putty;
  • wooden numbers from 1 to 12;
  • 4 different sheets scrapbook papers;
  • glue;
  • knife;
  • set of clock mechanisms.

Wooden numbers can be purchased at a craft store, or you can cut them yourself. A set of clock mechanisms can be purchased in specialized stores; they are inexpensive. Search the Internet, you will find several of them. You can use a mechanism with hands from an old clock that you have in your house or gathering dust somewhere in the attic.

Wooden numbers will look more interesting in different fonts and sizes. You can varnish the wooden numbers or glue on scrapbooking paper and then varnish. An interesting effect can be achieved if you spray the numbers with metallic silver paint.

Set the clock. The clock will be about 60cm wide, so choose a location to mount it where you have plenty of space. Once you have chosen a location, use a ruler to determine the center of the spot. This is where you will hang the clock mechanism.

Secure the clock mechanism to the wall using adhesive putty. This piece looks great when placed above a mantel or low cabinet.

Decide where you will hang the numbers. Use a ruler to measure 30 centimeters directly from the top of the clock. Mark this spot with a pencil. This is where you will hang number 12. Measure 30 centimeters to the right of the clock and mark it with a pencil. This is where you will hang number 3. Measure 30 centimeters below your clock and mark it with a pencil. This is where you will hang number 6. Measure 30 centimeters to the left of the clock and mark it with a pencil. This is where you will hang number 9.

Hang the numbers and set the clock. Use adhesive putty to hang 12, 3, 6 and 9 onto the pre-designated pencil spots. You can then use a ruler and pencil in the space and mark where the rest of the numbers will remain.

Use adhesive putty to hang the remaining numbers. The adhesive putty is easy to remove, so if you need to customize the placement of the number, you can easily remove it from the wall and reinstall it in another location. Insert the batteries into the clock mechanism and set it to the correct time.

Watch “Rainbow”

Know that recycling old items has great value to preserve our nature. And if you learn to recycle things instead of throwing them away and polluting them environment- it will be wonderful.

An additional bonus will be saving money and the opportunity to make a great gift for your loved ones. Try making this watch from recycled items. Let's look at how to make a wall clock with your own hands using popsicle sticks.

What you need:

  • 12 ice cream sticks;
  • Watch mechanism;
  • Styrofoam;
  • 1 sheet of plywood;
  • fabric or acrylic paints;
  • glue.

Progress:

  • Paint popsicle sticks rainbow colors. Line them up on the wall and mark the line with a ruler. This is done to determine how much space you need to insert the numbers.
  • Cut a circle with a diameter of 5 centimeters from foam. Draw numbers on it with a pencil. Then you need to paint the circles with acrylic paints.

  • Shape the face of the clock. Make a circle out of a sheet of plywood and paint it with white paint. Take a ruler and divide the circle into 12 parts. Drill a hole (you can use a large nail if you don't have a drill).
  • Apply glue. Lightly spread glue along the line on the right side of the clock and stick.

  • Now all you have to do is stick the numbers on. Add a clock mechanism and you're done!

Instead of popsicle sticks, you can use buttons and barbecue sticks or felt that you can cut out flowers from. Use any available material - it could be fragments of broken children's toys, etc. Remember that you can create a masterpiece from garbage and help nature.

Clock from photographs

Enough original idea make a watch with your own hands from portraits of loved ones, which can become a true decoration of your interior.

To make this original watch, you will need the following materials:

  • 2 sheets of 18x24 newsprint or poster paper;
  • scotch;
  • pencil;
  • 12 photo frames size 2x3;
  • 12 photographs, size 2x3;
  • Watch mechanism;
  • ruler;
  • sheet of cardboard size 8.5 x11;
  • scissors;
  • insulating tape;
  • hammer;
  • nails.

Lay out the hours. Place two sheets of newsprint or poster paper on the floor, then attach them to each other with tape. Place the clock mechanism kit in the center of the sheets and then place the photo frames around the clock movement.

Experiment with frames, placing some horizontally and some vertically. Play with the layout until you find a design that works best for you.

When you are satisfied with the result, use a pencil to draw the outlines of the photo frames on a piece of paper.

Insert photos into frames. Choose the most good photos for this project. Try to come up with a theme and choose twelve paintings that fit that theme. For example, choose pictures of twelve of your vacation spots. Or choose twelve different photos from key events in your life or relationship with your partner.

Attach the clock mechanism. Use a pencil, ruler and scissors to cut the cardstock into a square or rectangle. It should be large enough to cover the clock mechanism.

If the clock mechanism is small, cut cardboard to size 3.25 x 3.75 - the same size as the picture frames. Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard. The metal part of the watch mechanism will be located here, attach it. Use a piece of cardboard instead of a "dial".

Find an empty wall where you can hang a wall clock. Attach your paper blanks to the wall with tape and nail the photo frames. Make sure they match the pattern of the dial.

After you finish hammering, remove the newsprint from the wall. The nails should stay in place and the paper should slide out easily.

Button watch

Such a clock will look quite original and give the room more comfort. Take a hoop, buttons, don’t forget about the clock mechanism, stock up on braid and fabric in the colors you need.

The fabric should be well secured to the hoop, the edges should be trimmed so that they do not protrude beyond the shape. This will be your dial, naturally you need to make numbers for it. To do this, sew the buttons in the order in which the numbers are located on the dial.

Make a hole in the center so you can attach the clock mechanism. And for the clock to hang beautifully on the wall, you need to hang it. To do this, take a ribbon, attach it to a hoop, and then hang it on a nail on the wall.

Other creative ideas

As you can see, you can create a lot of interesting things from scrap materials. Halves of a globe or wooden reels for cable winding. Needlewomen can create this piece of furniture from lace napkin or knit a cover with threads.

Children will be interested in having a clock made of lollipops or candies in their room. A product made from vinyl records will fit perfectly into an interior in the Art Nouveau style. Form vinyl record can be easily changed by heating it. You can also paint a vinyl disc with acrylic paint and then your product will take on an absolutely incredible shape.

And if you take a sawn wooden circle as a dial, you can place a wooden clock in any room.

A great idea is a cardboard clock in the form of a picture or map of the area or a grandfather clock. You can also take old unnecessary mechanisms and make a clock for your kitchen, decorating it with scrapbooking paper or coffee beans. Even if you have nothing in the house, you can buy cutting board for the kitchen and create a clock from it. And the decoupage technique will help you decorate the board and turn it into a true masterpiece.
