The degree of “secrecy” of the mechanism, the quality of its metal and a number of other characteristics do not yet guarantee a high level of protection of the opening from unauthorized entry. Much is determined by how well the locking device is installed. In terms of the specifics of installation, a rim lock is quite simple, and having delved into some of the nuances of the work, you don’t have to involve a professional.
Fastening is carried out on the canvas, from the side of the room. This is a significant advantage, since you won’t have to cut into the lock, which means you won’t have to deal with wood removal. In addition, its position is easy to adjust if necessary. But this ease of installation also has a downside - this type of locking mechanism will not provide a high level of security if it is not securely fixed to the canvas.
It is not difficult to install a rim lock on any door, although it is mainly purchased for wooden doors, since it is more difficult to work with steel. The main technological operations and their order are unchanged; the only difference is in the individual tools used during the installation process.
Operating procedure
Selecting a location
This stage is not the most important, but it should be noted. Even before installation, you need to determine how best to install a height lock on a wooden door. And there are nuances here.
- Proper installation means that opening the overhead lock should not cause difficulties for any family member, even the smallest one who already has his own key.
- The lock is installed in such a way as to ensure maximum security of the door from being knocked out. And this is possible if it is located at the level of ½ of the canvas from the threshold. At the same time, at least two different types of mechanisms are installed at the input. In this case, the lower lock is attached with a distance from the floor at ⅓ of the height of the door. It happens that there are more of them (3, sometimes 4), and therefore a minimum of a meter is determined for it.
Marking the canvas
- If the location of the lock on the door is known, you need to attach it to it and outline the outline. The lock body is positioned so that its cut coincides with the edge of the blade. Since wood is subject to deformation, and over time, some distortion of the sash is formed due to wear of the hinges, it is recommended to make a small indentation from the edge (about 2.5 mm). This will not particularly affect the length of the tongue, but will eliminate the possibility of the metal touching the box.
- Having received the projection of the overhead device, it is easy to mark the holes for fasteners and the keyhole.
Drilling
There is some difficulty in making a hole for the cylinder of the locking mechanism. Moreover, if a rim lock is installed on a panel-type wooden door. It is mounted on its frame, and therefore the accuracy must be maximum, taking into account the small cross-section of the frame beam. In this case, it is recommended to work not with an ordinary cylindrical drill, but with a feather drill or a crown drill (for wood).
Installation of the overhead device
- Fastening the mechanism cylinder. It is fixed firmly, since no further manipulations with it are provided.
- Housing installation. There is no need to fully tighten the fasteners; It is only necessary to ensure a tight fit of the lock to the canvas.
What concerns the door itself is done. All that remains is to work on the joint.
Mounting the strike plate
It is placed on the box, on the tongue side. To avoid difficulties with opening/closing the padlock, incomplete release of the latch or its hooking, you need to achieve complete coincidence with the slot in the bar. It can be a rectangle or a hole (sometimes two, three); it all depends on the modification of the product. But the procedure is unchanged, especially since there is already a lock on the door.
- The end of the latch is smeared with paste (ink, ink), after which the blade is closed. It is enough to turn the overlay mechanism with a key, and an imprint will remain on the box corresponding to the location of the slot in the strike plate.
- The door is opened again, and the lock bolt is pulled out to its maximum length using the key. After the canvas is pressed against the box, their top and bottom are marked on it.
Determining for yourself how to secure the bar after such markings will not be difficult. You just need to select wood to the depth of the latch. How to proceed?
If it is round, then use a drill, but a slightly larger diameter. With a flat lock tongue it is somewhat more difficult. You will have to drill 2 - 3 holes, one above the other. All that remains is to knock down the formed jumpers with a chisel and give the recess the desired rectangular shape; the same chisel, shoemaker's knife or other sharp cutting tool.
Installing a door lock on a steel door is more difficult in the sense that you will have to machine a slot in the metal profile. A file is a bad helper; Given the limitation in the “course” of its working part, it will take a lot of time. It is much more convenient and faster to process the recess with a milling cutter, which is placed in the chuck of an electric drill.
Functionality check
No matter how accurately the measures are carried out at each stage, small deviations from the norm are possible. This means that you need to make sure that the crossbars move freely, without jamming, to their extreme positions, the latch easily moves out of place, and the canvas fits tightly to the box. Identified defects are eliminated quickly.
It remains to add that the installation of a rim lock on a wooden or metal door should be done after adjusting the position of the sash. If the awnings are adjustable, this will take a few minutes. If hinges that do not have such an “option” are heavily worn, it is more advisable to replace them with new ones.
Today, the market offers various types of overhead locks, ranging from the simplest latch to overhead cylinder locks.
In the case when the cylinder mechanism cuts into the door leaf, then such an invoice will be no less reliable than a high-quality mortise one. The quality of the invoice directly depends on the number of pins. If there are at least five of them, then such a lock will rightfully be considered reliable. In addition, all invoices have a stopper and a locking bolt.
The reliability of fastening the lock to the door frame directly determines its quality. During installation, the lock and its bolt are located on the door leaf. In order to increase reliability, the screws with which it is fastened must be chosen longer than those included in the kit, and the diameter of the fasteners must be identical to the standard ones.
Almost all cylinder rim locks are suitable for doors of various sizes. Before installing a rim lock, you should check the quality and strength of the door. Otherwise, it can be knocked out.
At the initial stage of installing a rim lock, you need to determine its location. If the lock comes with instructions, you should use them. As for the height, the most optimal is considered to be one third of the door height, starting from the bottom. The marked area must be drilled with a chisel-shaped drill. It should be the same diameter as the cylinder. This stage must be approached with caution so as not to damage the door.
Having received the hole, you need to insert the cylinder and the ring that will fix it from the front side. Then you need to measure the desired length of the rod. The optimal protrusion beyond the interior doors is considered to be 12 mm on each side. The excess must be cut off using a hacksaw. Then you need to put the mounting plate on the cylinder and fix it on the surface of the door. The front edge of the plate should be flush with the edge of the door.
At the next stage, you need to fix the lock itself on the plate by extending the rod. You need to put the back side of the lock on the rod, thereby determining its location. At this point you need to secure it tightly with long screws.
Having determined the position of the locking body, using a chisel, it is necessary to cut a groove according to these dimensions. Its depth is determined by the thickness of the locking plate. Then you should firmly fasten it.
It must be remembered that the reliability of such a lock is primarily determined by the quality of its installation. Interior doors are usually not equipped with locks, but if necessary, a lock can be installed on them. Basically, internal locks are inserted into the door; they are less visible and look more aesthetically pleasing. The choice is yours!

How to install a mortise lock on a wooden door
Installation of rim locks
To install an overhead locking device, you will need the same tools as for a mortise lock. A rim lock is installed on the door from the inside of the room. Such locks are most often used for wooden doors. But if desired, they can also be installed on a metal door. The only difference is in the tools used: when installing in a metal door, metal tools are used, and metal pins are pre-installed in the fastening areas; For wooden ones, accordingly, woodworking tools are used.
The first stage is marking. It is necessary to mark the location of the lock cylinder on the door leaf.
Then, using a drill and a metal bit of the appropriate diameter, you need to make a through hole for the cylinder. After this, you need to insert the cylinder and secure it, while checking the functionality of the mechanism. After this, you can screw the entire remaining part of the lock to the door leaf according to the preliminary markings.
The next step is to attach the strike plate to the door frame. To do this, you need to mark the point of contact between the crossbars and the door frame, and then install a strip in this place. Check the lock again for serviceability and secure fastening. Thus, you can easily insert a padlock with your own hands into both a wooden and an iron door.
It can be as reliable as a good mortise door - provided that its cylinder mechanism is embedded in the door leaf. It's not difficult to do it yourself.
Required tools and materials:

Process:
1. Using a ruler, mark one third of the height from the top on both sides of the door and drill a guide through hole. If the lock comes with a template, use it to mark the center of the hole.
2. Drill a hole for the cylinder with a chisel drill of the same diameter as the cylinder. In order not to damage the surface of the door, we do this from both sides: as soon as the tip of the drill appears on the opposite side, remove the drill, turn the door over and finish the job.
3. From the front side of the door, insert the cylinder and pin bracket (or fixing ring) into the hole. Pressing the mounting plate into place, we check: the connecting rod of the cylinder should protrude beyond it by 12 mm. Holding the rod with an adjustable wrench, saw off the excess with a hacksaw.
4. Insert the cylinder with the fixing ring or finger clamp into place. We put the mounting plate on the rod and screw it to the cylinder with long screws, making sure that the front edge of the plate is flush with the edge of the door. Drill holes and attach the plate.
5. By pressing the button on the lock body, we release the bolt and install the lock on the mounting plate, aligning the connecting rod with the slot in the rear side of the lock body. We screw the housing to the plate with small screws.
6. Using the button, move the latch to the “closed” position, press the door tightly and mark the position of the top and bottom of the latch tongue on the door frame. Having placed the plate of the locking body along the marks, we outline its outline with a knife.
7. Holding the chisel at a right angle to the surface (the bevel of the blade is facing inward) and tapping it with a mallet, we will walk along the intended contour. Having made a notch inside the contour, we select wood to the depth of the edge of the locking body plate. When selecting the last layer, hold the chisel with the blade bevel down.
8. Install the locking body plate into the cutout. Close the door and check whether the lock latch fits into the locking body. If necessary, deepen the cutout.
9. Drill pilot holes and attach the locking body. The lock is securely installed.
The method of installing a padlock depends on the object on which the installation is carried out. Most often we are talking about wooden and metal doors or gates, wickets or grilles that protect equipment from unauthorized access. Padlocks are often used to lock using a steel chain; this technique does not require the installation of lugs: just wrap the chain around metal bars or a picket fence and the door is locked.
Installing a padlock on wooden doors
To install a padlock on wooden doors you will need the following tools and equipment:
Eyelets, which are often supplied with the lock;
Chisel and hammer;
Screwdriver or screwdriver;
Self-tapping screws or screws from the lock kit.
A place to install the lock is selected; the height should be convenient for opening by everyone who has access to this door. Markings are made on the door jamb and the side of the door leaf. To do this, each eye is outlined with a simple pencil; they should be located parallel to each other.
After marking, you need to use a chisel and hammer to select the door jamb and door leaf to a depth equal to the thickness of the eyelet. Once the platform for the eyelets has been selected, all that remains is to fasten it with self-tapping screws or self-tapping screws through the factory holes. If the wood is hard, then you must first drill shallow holes using a thin drill. After installing the eyes, all that remains is to attach the lock.
Installing a padlock on steel doors or gates
To install a padlock on a metal gate, the welding method is most often used, so the eyes are chosen from fairly thick metal.
They are not included in the kit, so it is best to go to the market to get them. Unlike wooden doors, the lugs chosen are not flat, which are installed flush, but angular. The platform serves so that the bracket can be conveniently welded on top of the door, since selecting or drilling metal for a flat eyelet is time consuming and not economically feasible. The lugs are installed so that they do not interfere with each other when opening gates or doors and are welded using a welding machine.
What to do if you don’t have a welding machine
If you do not have a welding machine, you can install the lugs using a bolted connection. To do this, you need to choose brackets with long and wide platforms, the size of which will allow you to place three or four bolts at a distance of 2-3 centimeters from each other. To work you will need:
Bolts M8 and M12, length convenient for installation;
Electric drill with metal drills with a diameter of 8-12 mm and 2-3 mm;
Two wrenches.
First, markings are made on the eye area; holes are drilled in the designated places with a thin drill, which are expanded with a thicker drill. After this, the bracket is applied to the door and the location is marked with a bolt. They are also first drilled with a thin drill, then a drill corresponding to the diameter of the bolt is used. Having finished drilling, they begin to screw the eyes with bolts, for which they use two wrenches. A similar operation is carried out with the second eye, after which the door lock is attached.
