Bench with its own backrest. Do-it-yourself garden bench for a summer residence: six projects for every taste. Preparatory stage: drawings, dimensions, angle of inclination

With the onset of summer, it becomes impossible to sit in the house - you want to spend as much time as possible outside. Today we will show you three ways to make benches with your own hands.

Your bench option will depend not only on the model you choose, but also on the materials available to you. After all, often a bench made with your own hands from scrap materials looks both neat and interesting.

Each version of the bench requires its own skills, but the first bench can be easily made even by someone who does not have special skills in working with tools.

DIY benches in half an hour

Here is an example of the simplest bench you can think of. If you have all the materials, this bench can be assembled in a matter of minutes!

All you need are eight cinder blocks with through holes, four wooden bars and construction adhesive. It is better to select the beams according to the width of the holes in the blocks, but if they are a little narrower, then this is not a problem.

Don't forget to process wooden surfaces sandpaper to avoid splinters.

The blocks and beams can be painted if desired to give the bench a more pleasing appearance.

All that remains is to install the blocks vertically, having previously lubricated the contacting side surfaces with glue, and insert the bars into the holes. Once the glue dries, the bench is ready! If you wish, you can equip it with pillows: it will be more beautiful and comfortable.

How to make your own wooden bench with a metal frame

If you have at least minimal welding skills, then here is a project that will suit you. The bench stands on two metal supports and is simple but reliable. You will need a profile pipe or a thick plate for supports and, of course, a wide board for the seat.

If you are far from welding work, then you can assemble a metal frame at the corners and fasten it with metal screws.

After the bench is assembled, the metal legs should be treated with a metal primer, which will protect them from corrosion, and then the legs should be painted with metal paint for outdoor use.

The wooden seat of the bench must be painted with varnish or paint for outdoor use. This simple DIY bench option will serve you for many years.

You can experiment and create your own own design benches. For example, such a laconic designer bench is quite suitable for you because... it is done exactly according to the same principle.

How to make your own bench with a backrest

It is easy to attach a backrest to a bench standing on metal supports.

To do this, you need to take metal plates and bend them at the desired angle. This is easy to do even with your hands, or you can fix the edge of the plate and bend it with a hammer. The plates will act as a support for the back. We fix the plates from below under the seat at one end, and screw the backrest to the other end.

It is better to recess the bolts on the back (and on the seat too) into the wood so that they do not create discomfort.

If you don’t want to mess around like that, you can use bolts with a round head.

A more advanced solution for the backrest is to attach it to the frame rather than to the seat. This design is certainly more reliable.

To do this, you will have to weld some parts at an angle, because it is more comfortable to sit on a bench with an inclined back. And this requires great care.

Exist special devices, allowing you to fix the parts to be welded under right angle, - they're called magnetic holders or positioners.

But there is also a “folk” method. Make a wooden block and attach the parts to it while welding. So you can cook required amount supports, precisely maintaining the same angle.

All that remains is to attach the backrest to the frame, and the bench is ready!

DIY benches from old furniture

Old unnecessary furniture can still serve us in the country. You can practically make benches from it yourself.

We don’t throw away an unnecessary crib, but make a bench out of it with our own hands. One of the headboards of the bed will be the back of the bench. The second back is divided into two parts: Bottom part- this is the lower front part of the bench; top part— is divided into two parts and serves as bench handrails. The bench provides convenient drawer for storing pillows.

A wooden bench repurposed from a regular size bed. Provide a small drawer in the seat for storing pillows, then you won’t have to carry pillows from home all the time and come up with places to store these pillows.

Running out of beds? You can make a bench with your own hands from an old shelf - paint it and make a pillow, that's all the work. But this simple bench can turn into almost a throne if you have an old unnecessary door in stock. You can use it to make a beautiful high back for a bench. By the way, old wooden windows can be adapted for the same purposes.

Even if you don’t have a single board, you can still make a bench for your favorite dacha!

That's all! Simple benches You can do it yourself in just a few hours, without spending much on materials. And it will definitely become a favorite vacation spot for the whole family. After all, it’s so nice to read on a bench, drink tea, chat with friends, or even work while taking your laptop with you!

A bench is an essential element of any summer cottage. Today, such structures perform many important functions: from their intended purpose to giving the garden unique design.

Many owners suburban area prefer to build benches themselves, since this simple task will not take much time and money.

There are several basic materials that are used as the basis for constructing benches.

Wood

The most popular option is wood. It is believed that it is from this material that the most aesthetic designs are obtained.

Due to the universal aesthetic characteristics of the material, wooden benches fit perfectly into the landscape of any garden. It is important to consider that the benches are constantly under open air. Therefore, it is necessary to choose those types of wood that are characterized by maximum resistance to atmospheric conditions.

These include: hazel, oak, cherry pine, and larch. For additional protection, the material is coated with a special varnish.

Metal

Metal is popular for the production of benches for many reasons: durability, practicality, resistance to precipitation, ease of use. As an optimal option for the garden, openwork structures with interesting patterns are most often made. As an alternative, you can stick to minimalism.

Stone

Stone benches are impressive and monumental. Main materials: granite, marble, quartzite. In some cases, rough stone is used to create a unique design, in others, stone with a smooth surface is used.

Plastic

Plastic is the most affordable, convenient option. It is considered more seasonal and budgetary than aesthetic and decorative. However, when correct design plastic bench, it can become a garden decoration. Colorful pillows, lanterns, flowers and much more are often used for decoration.

Types of benches

Garden benches are traditionally divided into several categories. The criterion for division is location.

They are usually installed near the threshold, which determines the choice of material. Design experts insist that the appearance of the front bench should match the exterior of the country house. Thus, if the structure is made of stone, then the bench, accordingly, should also be made of stone.

water bench

The main purpose is to be able to spend time comfortably near a body of water. For the construction of structures, it is recommended to choose waterproof materials - artificial or natural stone.

Can be located virtually anywhere in a summer cottage. Plastic is usually used as a base, as it is lightweight and easy to maintain.

An indispensable option for hardworking summer residents. Garden benches are installed so that the owners of the site can relax comfortably while working in the garden. To ensure aesthetic pleasure that accompanies relaxation, the structures are located next to flower beds.

This variety can also be called a “solitude bench.” The fact is that it is customary to place them in the most remote places of the garden so that a person has the opportunity to hide from prying eyes. A popular material for manufacturing is wood.

Seasonal bench

This is a foldable design that is lightweight. This greatly simplifies the task of moving the bench from one place to another: in the summer - in the shade, in autumn or spring - in sunny places. Optimal material– plastic.

DIY wood bench

There are many different types of wooden benches. We'll look at a few of them.

Standard wooden bench

Materials:

  • slab - a board with bark on one side - 2 trimmings one and a half meters long;
  • bars - 2 pieces;
  • cuttings of bars - 2 pieces 15x20 centimeters.

Step 1. We dig two holes and level them in depth.

Step 2. Align the angles between the posts and bars so that it will be comfortable to sit on the bench later.

Step 3. We nail the bars at 200 millimeters.

Step 4. Bury the blanks.

Step 5. Compact.

Step 6. Nail the back to the posts.

Step 7. Nail the back to the bars.

Step 8. Treat the wood with special enamel or varnish.

The described option is an ordinary country bench, which acts more as a functional option than a decorative element.

List of materials:

  • suitable boards – cedar is best;
  • a simple pencil;
  • roulette;
  • saw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nails;
  • hammer;
  • polyurethane glue;
  • plant pots;
  • priming;
  • plants.

Bench manufacturing technology

Step 1. Arm yourself with a calculator and tape measure, calculate the dimensions of the bench.

Step 2. Sand the boards so that there are no nicks, burrs or other defects left on them.

Step 3. Cut out 46 pieces of equal length (about 50 centimeters each).

Step 4. Set aside 6 pieces to the side for further construction of the turret.

Step 5. Assemble the support boxes from 40 pieces.

To do this, we place two segments parallel to each other, and then place two more segments on top perpendicular to them. In this way we lay out the remaining planks to form a turret. We secure the corners with glue and self-tapping screws for greater strength. Each drawer requires 20 slats.

Step 6. We take long boards and begin to make a frame for the future structure. To do this, we lay the boards on their sides and secure them in the middle with a crossbar.

Step 7. Attach the frame to the support boxes using self-tapping screws and glue.

Step 8. We make a “turret” from the remaining 6 segments. To do this, we lay the planks on one of the support boxes in the same way as we did earlier.

The last row must be made continuous using short pieces that are inserted between the walls of the boxes.

Step 10. If desired, we make “window sills” on the top row by adding four sanded boards with oblique corners.

Step 12. Take long boards and cover the future seating area with them.

Step 13. Place pots with plants in the turrets.

This is a very beautiful and simple design that does not take up much space, but contributes to pleasant leisure time.

We will look at the production technology of the simplest country bench without a back. It only takes a few hours to assemble the bench. The basis of this design is a profile pipe.

Set of tools:

  • welding machine;
  • profile pipe;
  • steel corner;
  • Bulgarian.

Step 1. Determine the location of the future bench and carry out the appropriate calculations. The standard length of such a bench is 120 centimeters.

Step 2. Using a grinder, cut three metal blanks 120 centimeters long. They will act as a seat.

Step 3. Lay the pieces evenly on a flat surface. You can use a stove.

Step 4. Take a steel corner and cut off two cross members.

Step 5. We apply the crossbars perpendicular to the workpieces, stepping back from the edges about ten centimeters, and weld them.

Step 6. We weld two bench legs to the corners, the length of which is adjusted according to the wishes of the owners of the site.

Step 7. We weld a transverse bar to the legs, stepping back from the bottom of the seat by about 20-25 centimeters.

Step 8. From the scraps of the corners we make two crossbars.

Step 9. We weld these cross members to the bases of the bench legs.

Step 10. Apply protective covering to metal.

Step 11. Install the bench.

If desired, you can modify the structure by welding railings and a backrest to it. Bright paint will give the bench an interesting appearance.

Construction from scrap materials

First of all, you need to decide what materials will be used as the frame of the structure. It can be:

  • stones;
  • wooden pallets;
  • bricks;
  • bottles.

Also during the work you will need following materials: clay, straw, water, sand, paint, brushes.

Preparing a frame from pallets

  1. Fill the bottles with soil.
  2. We lay them in several layers on a bed of sand and gravel.
  3. We tie the bottles with wire.

Preparing clay solution

Stage 1. Mix straw with sand and clay.

Stage 2. Add water to the mixture and stir the contents of the container.

Stage 3. Using your hands, roll small balls from the solution.

Stage 4. We apply the balls to the pre-prepared frame, thus forming the outline of the future bench.

Stage 5. Cover the finished bench with polyethylene so that the solution gradually dries and does not crack.

It is believed that clay benches can last up to a hundred years without losing their attractiveness. appearance. In addition, this is a fairly economical option that will certainly add originality to any garden.

Choose the option that will fit well into your garden plot and will bring maximum satisfaction.

Video – Garden benches

Preface

The desire to decorate and somehow highlight a garden plot is familiar to all owners. In practice, it can be implemented in different ways: from installing garden sculptural compositions to creating artificial landscape areas like alpine slide. But in most cases, dacha owners tend to use more discreet methods and combine aesthetics with practicality. This is most clearly reflected in the appearance of the landscaping elements. There are many options for garden benches on sale, but most summer residents prefer to create them themselves, using their creativity, imagination and ingenuity. The results sometimes turn out to be much more successful than industrial designs, and the pleasure experienced by the master cannot be assessed. To know how and from what a garden bench can be created with your own hands, you don’t have to storm bookstores.

Requirements that a garden bench must meet

Stability is one of the basic parameters of a homemade garden bench

To this simple element There are many requirements for landscaping a summer cottage. It is necessary to immediately clarify that they are not some kind of documented standard; rather, they are the operational and aesthetic requirements of the owner for the quality of the product.

  1. A certain degree of comfort, convenience for the user. Rest on fresh air should give real pleasure, which is largely ensured by the design of the bench. A product with successful ergonomics, equipped with a backrest that allows you to lean back and relax is the best option, for the creation of which you need to take care in advance of choosing the most convenient design.
  2. Safety. It is necessary to ensure proper strength and reliability of the product. There should be no possibility of overturning or destruction under a sitting person. All surfaces that can be touched by the user must be are carefully processed, burrs or sharp elements are removed, the presence of protruding nails or other parts dangerous to humans must not be allowed.
  3. Resistance to external influences. The bench is located in the open air and takes on all atmospheric manifestations: precipitation, scorching rays of the sun, wind and other loads. Some materials are capable of changing their shape or surface quality (for example, wood), so it is important to periodically inspect them and take measures to eliminate any defects found.
  4. Decorative effect, a special look for a garden bench. Performance products are not unique, exclusive. The opportunity to create on the site a certain element of a fairy tale, a cozy and comfortable island of communication is undoubtedly attractive.

Materials for production: what to choose

The manufacture of a garden bench, as a rule, is made from the most accessible and inexpensive material. Scroll suitable materials for each owner is determined by his capabilities and skills, the presence of certain tools and equipment. There are designs of garden benches made from:

  • Wood. One of the most accessible and widespread materials. Allows the creation of structures with different degrees of processing, finishing, shape or size. Almost all users have woodworking skills, but manufacturing will require a fairly large number of tools.
    The durability of wood products used outdoors is low. A protective coating or impregnation is required.

    Wooden benches will last much longer if they are coated with a special varnish and the legs are provided with additional protection options

  • Metal. Working with it requires certain skills and tools. Material accepts different ways processing, sold in the form of finished products (profile pipes or rolled products), allows you to create very attractive samples.

    In terms of base design, iron is a more convenient and durable material

    The strength and durability of a metal bench are high, but some care and protection against corrosion are necessary.

  • Stone. The material is specific, the result largely depends on the type of stone and the processing method.

    Not everyone can do such masterpieces.

    A stone bench can look different, but in any case it will require effort and time to make.

    Benches are not always used for their intended purpose, and the choice is always up to the owner of the summer cottage

    At the same time, the strength and durability of the material are comparable to the service life of the house or site itself.

  • Plastic. As a rule, cuttings of water or sewer pipes, other parts or remnants from facing or finishing work are used.

    PVC and other types of pipes are easy to assemble for interesting designs of benches and benches

    The material is easy to cut, allows welding or other joining methods, does not rot and is not susceptible to moisture. The strength of plastic is lower than that of other materials, but it has elasticity that allows it to withstand mechanical impacts of a certain force without destruction.

  • The most common option is when two or more materials are used in manufacturing. Most often, a supporting structure (frame) is made of metal or stone, concrete, brick, etc. Boards are most often used for the seat and back, although there are other types of construction.

What criteria do you use to choose the right model?

A beginner should start with simple models based on available materials

The bench model (type of construction, design) can be realized in a variety of shapes or styles. The choice is determined by necessity, the needs of the owner or other considerations. The selection criteria are primarily the purpose and dimensions of the product. For some, a small bench is enough to sit down and take a breath. Others prefer to install a set of a table with two benches on the sides, suitable for family or friendly gatherings. The final choice should combine the owner’s wishes in the following categories:

  • Dimensions.
  • Material.
  • Performance style.
  • Composition (number of items, composition).

Factors influencing the choice of the optimal option may include:

  • Plot size.
  • Climatic conditions in the region.
  • The owner's capabilities both financially and technologically.

It is important to take into account the number of people who may be on the site at the same time, choose optimal design and style.

Many people solve the problem using available materials or elements that require almost no additional action. Others create real masterpieces, spending a lot of time and effort on them.

Step-by-step instructions, drawings and diagrams for assembling garden benches with your own hands

You can design garden furniture yourself. For those who do not have the time or desire to create a project, there are ready-made drawings and manufacturing instructions. Let's look at some options that can inspire home craftsmen to create their own product. It is not necessary to follow the instructions inside and out; you can only use the idea itself or some points. The main thing is that the information turns out to be useful for land owners and helps in making their own, original model of a garden bench.

Made of wood

There are many design options for garden benches made of wood. The most traditional form is a bench with a back, an approximate drawing of which can be seen in the figure.

The drawing shows a model of a stable simple structure

The sizes indicated in the diagram are the most common, with the exception of the length, which can be changed at will.

For production you will need:

  • Edged boards 30–40 mm thick, 140–160 mm wide.
  • Tape measure, ruler, square.
  • Hacksaw, electric saw or jigsaw.
  • Electric or manual plane.
  • Electric drill, screwdriver.
  • Hammer, pliers, hacksaw.
  • Screws, nails.
  • Varnish or paint, brush, appropriate solvent.

Procedure:

  1. Cut the boards to lengths corresponding to the dimensions indicated in the diagram.
  2. Process them with an electric or manual plane and chamfer them.
  3. The backrests have a bevel, forming an inclination. Mark the workpieces and cut the corner with a jigsaw or circular saw.

    Please note that the length of the screws in this design gradually decreases

  4. Assemble the frame by attaching crossbars to the legs and a longitudinal strip at the bottom.

    Cover the legs with varnish on all sides, including the one that will stand on the ground.

  5. Attach the boards to the back and seat.

    The seat can be made narrower and the back straighter

This option can be made for permanent installation, for which the lower part of the legs must be extended by the amount of immersion in the ground. It must be taken into account that wood rots quickly, so before diving you need to apply a layer of hot bitumen or at least wrap the legs with roofing material.

A bench with a back is considered one of the more difficult options. You can create more simple design using logs sawn lengthwise.

In this model, some negligence is a sign of style

Smooth (flat) parts form the seat and back (if needed). By slightly complicating the design, you can get a set of two benches and a table that looks deliberately rough, but stylish.

In some situations, a folding design is convenient, which can turn from a bench with a back into a set of two benches and a table. Owners small plots will appreciate this option.

Transformable benches require precise sizes

The backrest, the lower edge of which rises, becomes a tabletop, and half of the seat moves back into the opposite side and becomes the second shop. You can find many options for transforming benches.

A transforming bench is the peak of carpentry art and is often beyond the power of a beginner

There are benches installed around tree trunks. They are in the shade and do not occupy a separate space, which is important for small areas. Making such a design is simple and does not require much time. There may be options designed for sitting with your back to the trunk.

It’s not the most convenient option for conversations, but placing flowers on it is easy!

There are other designs that, in addition to the seat, form a circular version of the table. In this case, people are placed facing the tree.

To avoid rapid deterioration, any wooden structure is coated with varnish or impregnation.

Made of metal or wood-metal

Metal benches are highly durable, reliable, and elegant.

Metal products are exquisite, but not always comfortable

The only drawback is the metal's tendency to corrode. The best option- use of a profile pipe of rectangular or oval cross-section. The best way to create a product is by welding - this significantly speeds up the work and provides a high-quality and durable connection.

To work you will need tools:

  • Welding machine, set of electrodes.
  • Grinder with cutting wheel.
  • Roulette, ruler.
  • Scribbler, chalk or talcum powder.
  • Clamps for temporary fixation of parts.

There can be many design options, and you can add any element at almost any stage of the assembly. The main part of the bench is the seat, which is a kind of lattice mounted on support legs.

The manufactured product must also be coated with paint or other protective material.

Creating a bench only from metal does not give the best results. Even in appearance, such a product looks too hard and cold.

Most often, combined structures are created in which only the supporting frame, legs and back supports are metal. All elements that a person touches are made of wood. Similar designs are found everywhere and are familiar to everyone.

A bench with a curved back looks more elegant, but requires a little more skill.

They are quite simple and reliable, allowing you to replace faulty ones if necessary. wooden parts. The main advantage can be considered the absence of specialized wooden elements - only bars of a certain cross-section are required, which are attached to the base using bolts and nuts.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. A working drawing is drawn up indicating all dimensions. If you are using a ready-made project, then you can skip this point.
  2. Parts are cut from a pipe required length according to specification.
  3. The parts are connected to each other by welding.
  4. If the back and seat are wooden, then the corresponding bars are cut and processed.
  5. Holes are drilled on the base for bolts for the seat and backrest.
  6. The base is covered with a layer of protective paint. The most popular option is black bitumen.
  7. While the base is drying, it is recommended to simultaneously varnish or paint the wooden parts.
  8. The bench is assembled and installed in place.

If you have a pipe bender on hand, you can create a very attractive design with elegant curved armrests.

Such models are created using a pipe bender, and you also need to be able to use it

Such a bench will take a little more time than the usual version with straight lines, and the effect will be much greater.

Concrete slabs combined with wood

Design option for a garden bench using concrete slabs less common as a base than wooden or metal samples. Nevertheless, the owners of such products note their decorative value and durability. To create such structures, it is necessary to place concrete hollow blocks of a certain size. The simplest version of the design is assembled from rectangular slabs like paving or facing, which are drilled and tightened with threaded rods, placing wooden boards between the slabs.

They perform several functions at once - they connect the supports to each other and form a seat. Concrete wooden bench

not suitable for every garden design, because it looks a little massive It is advisable to select the thickness of the slabs so that the gaps between the boards are not too large, as this creates discomfort for a sitting person. If suitable slabs

If you don’t have it at hand, you can solve the problem by laying additional flooring from boards laid horizontally. This option will allow you to get a seat without any gaps at all.

In addition to slabs, you can use other types of blocks. One of the most simple options

- fixation is required only for blocks Using imagination, the user is able to create a lot of design options. If desired and possible, you can make formwork and pour your own version concrete base

having an exclusive appearance or configuration.

From scrap materials On summer cottage

you can find many improvised elements that can be used to create original and stylish pieces of garden furniture. One option is to use pallets from bricks or cinder blocks left over from construction or renovation. Recently, through the efforts of designers and marketers, furniture made from pallets (pallets) has become fashionable; it is used not only in the country, but also in residential premises. Pallets are now truly in demand in design garden plots

Making a bench from pallets is easy. You just need to install them on top of each other in the right way. You don’t even have to connect them together, since the pallets are quite stable and lie motionless in a stack, and if necessary, it’s easy to build another composition out of them by attaching a table or additional seats.

Uncomplicated and, moreover, in its own way stylish option: savings and originality!

Video: Creating a bench with a back from pallets in 10 minutes

Another interesting option- use of old chairs. There is also wide scope for imagination here. The easiest way is to disassemble the chairs, take the back legs, which are structurally connected to the backs.

Try to take chairs of decent quality

A frame to the size of the seat is assembled from the bars and attached to the backrests with legs installed opposite each other. If necessary, you can connect the backrests at the top on one side, resulting in a solid back support.

This design is suitable for a maximum of two, but it is better to make it for children

Another way is to arrange them tightly in a row and connect them together at the sides.

Other options

There are other ways to make garden benches. The imagination of users has no limits, as practice has shown, to produce garden furniture can be made from almost anything. For example, benches made from scraps of plastic pipes. They are collected as in the usual way using standard fittings, or by welding or gluing along the side surfaces.

Cheap and cheerful: nothing extra, everything goes into the house!

At the top, the pipes form a flat plane, and at the bottom, supports are created from pipes of the same length. The remaining tubes, shorter ones, simply “hang” above the ground.

Other, no less original version making benches for the dacha - using thick tree branches.

Benches of this type are an excellent accent in the design of a country-style cottage.

If old trees have been cut down or trimmed nearby, this option can be used at no cost. The bench is assembled using screws or nails. You can make the drawing yourself or adapt a ready-made version.

Making a garden bench does not require a very technological result and even allows for some negligence. The main advantage of such furniture is not the quality of production, but the original and unexpected idea, idea, design discovery. It is important to accurately grasp the style and create an accurate image of the product, which corresponds to the maximum extent with the appearance of the entire site, house, and surrounding landscape. Sometimes two pieces of wood placed on top of each other create a greater effect than a complex and expensive structure made from the most modern materials. You should not undertake complex and expensive work; it is better to use your imagination and create a unique product.

At your summer cottage, you really want to have a corner where you can relax and enjoy nature. It is impossible to imagine such a place without beautiful bench. A self-made garden bench can not only save money, but also fulfill the individual needs and ideas of everyone, because there are a lot of options and techniques for making it, and from them you can choose the one that suits you.

Step-by-step diagram for assembling a garden bench with a table

How to choose a place to install a country bench

Before you start self-production benches, you need to be very careful about where to place it. This issue is worth addressing because a bench is not only an object for the convenience of relaxation, but also a place where sufficient work will be carried out. a large number of time, and therefore the view and atmosphere must be suitable. In addition, much in its design and installation process will depend on the selected area for installing a garden bench, as well as its type.

Examples of the location of garden benches from the design side.

A bench for a summer house made of wood combined with forged wood frame.

A bench made of logs with a stone base.

It will fit very harmoniously into a garden in which trees with large crowns and various fluffy shrubs grow.
Romantic style bench, openwork

A garden of young trees or a vineyard would be a good place to place it.
Miniature bench painted white
It would be ideal to be in contrast with a dense hedge of rich green color. Also a good option for such a bench would be a pond, flowering flower beds, or simply in a secluded corner decorated with flowers.
Retro bench made of “old” wood

It can create a very mysterious atmosphere together with old trees with curved trunks located nearby, near which flowers of different types are planted.
Bench combined with decorative items
A very popular place to place a bench is a veranda or gazebo. In this case, a do-it-yourself garden bench should be made in a similar style with existing decorative items and the veranda or gazebo itself.
Combined benches and table

This design will be good on a small spacious plot of land, which can be decorated with floral vegetation, and can also be located next to the house or under a canopy.

In addition to the options listed, you can install a bench in a place where children usually spend their leisure time, which will allow you to be close to them when they play. It will be especially good to organize a place to rest if there is a lone tree on the site, which has a spreading crown, by installing a bench directly under it.

In addition, you can organize a canopy near the house, under which you can place a garden bench. It will be good place rest even in rainy weather. There is another option to simply locate a bench in the beds where crops are grown - it will be convenient for relaxing between work in the garden.

Important: It is best to choose a location so that there are no annoying objects or buildings, garages, fences, etc. in the field of view. It is worth remembering that the view should lift your spirits and promote relaxation, and not be a reminder of how much work remains to be done at the dacha.

There are a great many options and ideas for implementation that a DIY garden bench can allow you to implement. It’s quite simple to come up with a decorative composition with its participation; for example, it looks good on elevations, decorated with boulders or shrubs; a bench that harmoniously merges into a flower bed is also pleasing to the eye.

Preliminary steps

After the location of the bench has been determined, you need to start planning the future product. It is worth considering a few points:

  1. Size. If the bench is typical in size and you do not want to design an individual model, you can use the data from the table.
  2. Method of fastening the backrest.
  3. Leg layout. This criterion can be determined based on the mobility of the product. If the bench is a stationary structure, then it should be strengthened in the ground with cement, first digging a hole in the ground of the required size.

Table of standard bench sizes.

Seat height, m Seat width, m Back height, m
0,4-0,5 0,5-0,55 0,35-0,5

When the drawing plan is drawn up, you can easily determine the size of each part of the bench from it, and then begin its manufacture.

It is also worth asking about the material from which the DIY garden bench will be made. Each material has its own special nuances that can be used as advantages to achieve the desired result.

Mandatory requirements for the bench

In addition to the previous nuances in the process of designing a product, it is worth taking into account a certain list of requirements that it must meet. The following must be taken into account:

  1. Safety. You should not allow an unreliable design of the product, because this can bring a lot of troubles when using it. To ensure safe use, it is worth choosing only quality material, as well as fastening devices and any accessories.
  2. Convenience. Undoubtedly, such an item in the garden as a garden bench should be comfortable so that nothing interferes with the relaxation process. To do this, you need to approach the project creation stage very competently and carefully and think through all the details in advance.
  3. Immunity to influence external conditions . To ensure long-term preservation of appearance and service life, it is necessary to select only solid material at the assembly stage of the product. Additionally, it is worth processing it (if made from wood material) by special means, which can provide protection to the product.

Design options

There are quite a lot of variations in which a garden bench can be made with your own hands. If we're talking about about products made of wooden material, then for this you will need the following list of tools and materials.

Any country bench has essentially the same assembly process. To more accurately understand such a process, it can be considered at specific example, based on the material listed above.

Help: A similar principle is used when self-creation benches made of wood in any version of its design.

Simple bench

In order to avoid any problems in the process of drawing up a drawing, it is possible to use a ready-made one. This bench is very easy to make. It is only necessary to install additional support bars of three larger and smaller sizes. Assembly occurs according to the specified principle.

Help: You can diversify such a product simply by changing color scheme, as well as drawing various kinds of patterns. But at the same time it is necessary to carry out processing of the wood material.

Classical

It is also quite simple to design, plus it is possible to vary the backrest by changing the arrangement of the slats, for example, making them cross-shaped. If you approach the process of creating such a shop with all the specified nuances, then it will not be used enough for a long time. For the drawing, you can use an existing one and take the dimensions standard sample.

Metal bench

garden bench with your own hands can be made not only from wooden material. You can use a metal frame, which is not difficult for anyone to make, even if you have no experience in forging metal.

To construct a frame for a bench, you can use cold forging, namely, to connect parts into an integral structure metal frame. At the same time, you can complement the product with something, decorating it.

The table shows the principle by which you make a garden bench with your own hands.

Process Description
Sizing If there is no design of a bench in which all the dimensions will be correctly compiled, then you can use the dimensions of the standard sample. It can be a seat length of 1500 mm, a width of 500 mm, and the backrest with such values will be 900 mm. If the task of creating a bench for the garden is new, then it is better to use a type of product that is one of the simplest in design and size.
Frame construction The seat is made first. To do this, you will need several sections of pipes, 1500 mm and 400 mm long, two pieces each. If there are no such segments in finished form, then you need to do them yourself. To achieve a more reliable structure, you can supplement the structure with stiffeners welded to the frame.
Designing the legs The length of the legs should be 460 mm, this is exactly the size that the pipes need to be made for this. Also, in addition, it is necessary to ensure that the front and rear legs are connected to each other. This will provide a better degree of stability.
Making the backrest The back is made in such a way that parts of pipes measuring 1.5 m and 44 cm are welded to each other. After this process is completed, you can start welding it to an already manufactured part of the structure. It is best to position the backrest at an angle of up to 20 degrees, this will ensure optimal level comfort when sitting on the bench. Regarding the reliability of the backrest, stiffening ribs in the longitudinal and transverse directions will help here.
Polishing To complete the construction of the metal frame, the existing joints should be cleaned and also polished metal product and cover with primer.
Manufacturing of wooden elements In order for it to take on a complete look, you need to make wooden parts that will be attached on top of the frame. Such elements can be easily completed using timber or boards. Depending on the size of the frame product, you should determine the size of the wooden elements, as well as the direction of their attachment. You must also keep in mind that all parts must be smooth, without any kind of damage.
Connecting all the elements To connect all manufactured elements, you can use electric jigsaw and make the required number of holes in the frame and wooden parts to attach them to each other. As fasteners, it is best to use bolts that have rounded heads, as well as nuts.
Completion of work And the very last touch, before the garden bench is made on your own and ready for use, the woody areas should be treated with stain. You can also use varnish for such purposes. This procedure will protect the material from many undesirable factors.

The good thing about this design is that due to the material that goes into the structure, it is light enough to be transported or moved to the desired location if desired. It is also important that changes temperature regime Such a product is stable, which is why it will be possible to use it for more than one year in a row.

Helpful information

When making a garden bench with your own hands, it is better to keep in mind the following rules, which will greatly simplify the work and help avoid difficulties:

  1. When purchasing material for construction, it is worth considering the percentage of losses when cutting out the required size of parts. It is about 10%.
  2. To avoid wastage of material, and possibly achieve savings, it is best to start manufacturing and cutting out elements and those boards that are the longest.
  3. If you want to make the seat wider than indicated in standard sizes, then you need to remember that deflections of the wood material are possible in the absence of a supporting frame structure.
  4. To avoid injury, it is better to initially take care of eliminating all angular and pointed areas.
  5. It's also worth remembering that wood material is prone to drying out, which must be taken into account when drawing up the drawing and leaving spaces for gaps.

Video - interesting ideas for making a garden bench yourself

One of the attributes of a garden or recreation area on suburban area– a bench, sitting on which you can read a book alone or, conversely, spend a few fun hours with friends. How can you make an ordinary bench comfortable and at the same time turn into an element of garden decor? The solution is simple - a DIY bench for your dacha. Only your own exclusive creation will fully satisfy your personal aesthetic needs.

Before you start sketching or drawing a product, you need to think about its installation location. The material of manufacture also depends on this. For example, in an old garden with large branchy trees, a wooden bench with a wrought-iron frame looks good (as an option - a product made of logs on a stone base), and in a young garden - a light, even openwork bench in a romantic style.

Small bench white stands out in contrast against the dark green hedge

If you place it in a quiet secluded corner, near or surrounded by flowering flower beds, it will become a wonderful place of solitude and relaxation, where you can spend a few pleasant minutes alone after working out in the garden beds.

Old Brick wall, a bench made of grayed wood and flowers look mysterious and romantic

Often benches are an integral part of verandas, gazebos, and summer picnic areas. In this case, there should be several products designed in the same style. One example is garden table with two benches on the sides, where on a summer evening you can have a family tea party or play board games.

Deliberately rough and comfortable wooden structure– a table, two benches and an armchair

It is better to install the bench in such a way that it offers a view not of the neighbor’s fence or garage, but of a pond, flower garden, or. The surrounding picture should please the eye, and not remind you that you need to refuel your car or renew the paint on the gazebo. It is also appropriate to place benches on the playground, by the pool, near the front entrance to the house.

A bench by the pond surrounded by flowers and greenery is a great place for relaxation and reflection.

One of the best places is in the garden, near the beds. It is better if the bench stands in the shade, for example, under the spreading crown of a tree or under a canopy, since it is intended for a break from physical labor - digging, weeding, watering or harvesting.

Relaxing in the shade flowering bush– a real pleasure

You can think about a decorative frame: a garden bench made by yourself looks good surrounded by low flowering bushes, specially arranged flower beds, on a small hill or on a platform made of natural stone or.

Preparatory work is half the battle

First you need to take a piece of paper and make a sketch or drawing of the proposed product. Even at this stage, questions may arise: what is the optimal height or how many legs should the bench have? There are general standards that should be followed when drawing up a diagram:

  • 400 mm – 500 mm – seat height;
  • 500 mm – 550 mm – seat width;
  • 350 mm – 500 mm – back height.

If you plan to create a product with a backrest, you should determine for yourself how the backrest will be attached to the seat. Depending on whether the bench is portable or not, the legs are planned: for a non-portable product, they are firmly fixed in the ground.

It’s easy to fix the legs of the bench: you need to dig holes the right size and fill them out cement mortar, lowering wooden parts there

From the drawing you can estimate how much material is needed for the job. Typically, a product of this kind requires a minimum financial investments: at the dacha there is always a lot of wooden blanks left over from the construction of a house or bathhouse, fasteners (screws, nails, bolts, staples), paint and varnish compositions for wood processing.

If you collect the leftovers wooden products and blanks from all over the countryside, you can come up with an unusual model

Found in the back room and necessary tool. If the main material for production is wood, you should prepare: a plane, a saw, a jigsaw, a hammer, sandpaper, a tape measure and a pencil.

Making Benches: Six Easy Projects

You can never go wrong by choosing wood for work - a material that is soft, pliable in processing and at the same time durable, capable of serving for decades. You can create elements from wood various shapes and size, figured inserts, voluminous and miniature details.

Project No. 1 – a simple bench with a backrest

If you have difficulty drawing up a sketch, you can use a ready-made drawing of a garden bench.

All parts are cut according to the dimensions in the drawing

This bench is traditional for city parks; similar specimens can be found at river stations, near theaters or shopping centers– in places where you have to spend some time waiting. The advantage of this option is the ease of preparation of parts and speed of assembly. To work, you will need thick beams for support (3 large and 3 smaller), bars or boards for the seat and back.

The color of the parts can be changed using impregnation or varnish of a darker shade

This model is portable - it can always be rearranged to another, more comfortable spot. To ensure that it always stands level and does not wobble, when installing supports it is necessary to ensure the exact location of the parts - even a slight discrepancy will cause the product to skew.

At the end of the work - and this applies to any wood product located outdoors - all wooden parts must be treated with a special anti-mold impregnation or coated with varnish, which also contains protective components. Treated wood is resistant to moisture, lasts longer and looks like new for a long time.

Project No. 2 – classic style bench

This option is more thorough than the previous one. A bench with a rectangular seat and the same back looks great against the background of a house built from any material - wood, brick, stone.

Assembly diagram of the armrests and backrest of a bench in a classic style

For variety, you can change the color, choose a shade that is closer to the country houses. The back of such a bench is a real find for those who like to imagine and translate their ideas into wood. Straight vertical bars can be replaced with slats arranged crosswise.

Several people can easily fit on this bench

The upper horizontal crossbar would look good if covered with elegant carvings or colored designs. Armrests and legs can also be figured - but it all depends on the desire and skill of the master. It only takes a few evenings to make such a bench for your dacha, but you can enjoy relaxing on it for more than one year.

Project No. 3 – table with benches

A garden set for relaxing with the whole family consists of a comfortable table and two fixed benches.

A convenient and practical table with a couple of benches will be useful in any country house

All large parts (table, benches) are assembled separately, and then assembled into a single whole using 4 lower bars - 2 on each side.

Variety of materials, shapes and styles

Wood is a traditional, “warm” material for making benches, which is why products made from it are so different. Instead of machine-processed bars, you can take natural material with natural shapes - and before us is not just a bench, but a real masterpiece.

The original bench is made from large pieces of sawn and processed logs

It turns out that there are also stone benches, but they are valued not for functionality, but for aesthetics. You only want to sit on a stone piece in the warm season, but you can admire it all the time.

A small stone bench fits harmoniously into the floral landscape

They look refined and elegant, but only a professional blacksmith can create a garden bench with his own hands from metal.

A wrought-iron bench among the riotous colors looks more than appropriate

Combined benches and benches, built of stone and wood or decorated with textile items - capes, pillows, look interesting.

Small pillows in pink and white, neatly laid out on a bench, make the garden corner cozy and homey.

That's all for today. We hope you found something useful. If you have any questions or suggestions, you are welcome to comment.
