The presence of light is not prerequisite for growth. Plants reach a maximum height of three blocks quite quickly, but they can also be increased manually. Interestingly, this plant can even be planted in or under water. Underwater farming allows you to create an "air pocket" (bubble) to breathe underwater.

Harvesting Sugar Cane in Minecraft
Sugarcane growth time is about 13-15 minutes for 1-3. In Bedrock Edition, the plant can be immediately brought to maximum size when using a Minecraft fertilizer such as bone meal.

Flowing water knocks it down like wheat, destroying the reed block, but standing water will not destroy it. Moreover, the reed will prevent water from spreading (that is, water will not be able to pass through it. The same will happen if water falls on the reed from above). These qualities are used in underwater construction, digging underwater tunnels (since you can walk through reeds, but water does not flow, you can enter a block of reeds and breathe in it).
