Do-it-yourself repair of gasoline trimmers: tips and recommendations. How to properly work with a brush cutter (trimmer) Disassemble the brush cutter engine

The use of various electrical devices greatly simplifies the performance of many types of work, but unfortunately, all complex products break sooner or later. Electric trimmer failure

will lead not only to the inability to carry out work in the garden, but also to significant financial expenses for repairs. It is possible to significantly save money and increase your own knowledge of how this equipment works if you repair the trimmer yourself. Before you begin this type of work, you should carefully study the operating principle of this type of household appliance.

Electric trimmer: device and principle of operation

The electric trimmer consists of:

  • Enclosures with electric motor.
  • Detachable rod.
  • Trimmer reel with protective cover.
  • Shoulder strap rivets.

Electric trimmer device

A power cable with a plug is connected to the trimmer body, through which electric current is transmitted. In the cavity of the detachable rod there is a flexible shaft, thanks to which torque is transmitted to the trimmer coil. The device is turned on by pressing a button located on the handle of the device.

This trimmer design is the most common, but

If desired, you can find products powered by a battery, as well as with a bottom-mounted electric motor.

Do-it-yourself grass trimmer repair: common causes of breakdowns

The trimmer may fail when operating under heavy loads. This situation may arise when the treated area is overgrown with tall grass.

Mowing tall grass

When working in such areas, the engine may fail, the bearings may break, and the coil of the electric scythe may be destroyed. When operating in rainy weather or in heavily foggy conditions, the trimmer may “burn out” as a result of a short circuit.

Damage to this electrical device can also occur as a result of frequent use. If household appliance will be used in this mode, then after a certain number of engine hours it will be necessary to carry out mandatory repairs and preventive adjustments of many parts of the electrical device.

Start button repair

If the electric scythe shows no signs of life, then a break may have occurred. electric cable inside the housing handle, or the electric motor switch button is faulty.

Start button

In order to diagnose the electrical system, you will need to disassemble the handle of the electrical appliance. The work is performed in the following sequence:

  • The control handle is removed from the frame of the electric mower.
  • The handle comes apart.

When access to the inside of the electric trimmer is provided, use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the electric trimmer power button. If there is no resistance after pressing, then this

The part must be replaced. It is also necessary to check the connection points of the power cable with the internal electrics located in the handle

device. The contacts should be checked for open circuits using a multimeter. Often such a malfunction can be determined “by eye”. After detecting a broken contact, it is enough to solder the damaged area to restore the operation of the electric trimmer.

If you don’t have a multimeter, diagnostic work can be done with an indicator screwdriver. For this purpose, connect the plug to the electrical network and use this diagnostic tool

find the “phase wire” and thus check the presence of electric current before and after the power button. If phase current is detected in another electrical circuit, then it is enough to install electrical plug on the contrary in the socket so that correct diagnosis can be carried out

trimmer malfunction. The second diagnostic option should be carried out with great caution, since there is a danger of damage electric shock while checking wiring integrity.

Checking the electric motor

If the device's power button and sections of internal wiring are undamaged, then you should begin checking the electric motor. For this purpose, it is necessary to remove the housing cover, after unscrewing several screws with a screwdriver.

Checking the electric motor

The first thing you need to do after accessing the electric motor is to check the functionality of the brush assembly. If the brushes are worn beyond the maximum permissible value, the electric motor may stop completely or operate unstably. In the case when the brushes and commutator are in in perfect order, you should start “ringing” the motor winding. In order to eliminate the possibility of breakdown in both circuits, you should alternately carry out

checking the stator and rotor of the engine. To perform this operation you must:

  • Remove the motor from the electric mower.
  • Turn the multimeter into resistance measurement mode and check all collector plates for breaks. When checking, there should also be no significant deviations in the readings of the diagnostic device.
  • Check for breakdown of the rotor winding to ground. For this purpose, one probe of the multimeter should be connected to the “ground” of the rotor, and the other to any collector plate. The multimeter must be set to measure resistance greater than 1 MOhm. In a working motor, the resistance between the winding and ground should be very high.
  • Measure the resistance of the stator winding. If there is no resistance, then in this case it can be stated that it is faulty.
  • If the stator wiring is in perfect order, then a possible breakdown of it to the housing is checked, in the same way as when diagnosing the stator.

Trimmer motor

When checking in this way, in 90% of cases it is possible to determine the cause of the electric motor malfunction. It will not be possible to check for an interturn short circuit, which can only manifest itself during engine operation, but it is possible to diagnose such a malfunction

by indirect signs, which manifest themselves in a decrease in the power of the electric motor and its overheating. If the electric motor is equipped with a thermal relay, then such an electric scythe, when interturn closure, will work for a short time, after which the trimmer will automatically turn off. In some cases, the thermal relay can cause a malfunction of the trimmer motor, therefore, in a set of test

activities, the thermal relay must be “ringing” using a multimeter or tester.

Digital multimeter

This is very simple to do: in good condition on a cold engine, the thermal relay passes electric current,

In a faulty state, the electrical circuit will be open.

Problems with the performance of the electric scythe associated with broken wires are easily eliminated by soldering the contacts, but if the motor is “burnt out,” then you will need to perform a complex rewinding process, which can

Only be carried out by a qualified specialist. In many cases, it is much easier and cheaper to purchase a new engine and install it in place of the burned one. this work can be done independently

in the reverse order of removing the unit.

If the trimmer's electrics are in good condition, then you should pay attention to other types of faults that may appear during operation of the electric scythe.

Mechanical problems with trimmer

If the electric motor of the device turns on, but the reel with fishing line does not rotate, the cause of such a malfunction may be a break in the flexible shaft transmitting torque. This problem especially often occurs when the electrical appliance is not properly maintained. For example, if there is no lubrication inside the rod of an electric braid, the cable will be subject to excessive friction and within a short time this part will fail. To replace, simply unplug top part electric scythe in which the electric motor is located, after which it will be possible to remove the flexible shaft from the rod.

Flexible shaft

Flexible Shaft Lubricant

If there are difficulties in removing the second part of the cable remaining in the cavity, the lower part of the braid with the reel and shaft is disconnected. The mechanism is assembled in the reverse order.

Undermount trimmer

Before installation, the flexible shaft must be thoroughly lubricated with grease to reduce the likelihood of repeated failure of this part.

Electric mower shaft bearing

Flexible shaft rupture can only occur in electric trimmer models with top position engine.

Electric scythes with a bottom engine do not have a flexible shaft, but malfunctions of such devices can manifest themselves in the form of destruction of the bearing of the main shaft of the electric scythe on which the reel with fishing line is installed.

Fixing such a malfunction is very simple; just replace the failed bearing with a new part.

Conclusion

With frequent use and improper care of the electric scythe, the listed malfunctions can appear with enviable regularity. To minimize the likelihood of breakdown, it is enough not to overload the device, lubricate the rubbing parts in a timely manner and do not work under high humidity. Despite some limitations when working with this device, unlike gas trimmers, malfunctions cannot occur in the ignition unit. And such a malfunction as “the trimmer motor immediately stalls” cannot exist in principle. Engine electrical device cannot stall, because it does not need to be started. To start, just press the power button, which is why many summer residents choose electric trimmers to care for the surrounding area.

Repair of trimmers must be carried out as soon as possible when the first signs of breakdown appear, so that minor malfunctions do not lead to more serious problems. All models are characterized by the presence of such main components and structural elements : drive system (motor), transmission devices, working part (knife or fishing line), belts and handles. Failure can occur in any part, but some components fail much more often than others.

Lawn mowers powered by gasoline or electricity (as well as different models from different manufacturers) differ in design and the nature of the problems. Some of them can be easily eliminated with your own hands, while others will require more overhaul or contacting the service center.

The most common breakdowns of brush cutters are associated with the following structural elements:

  • engine (in particular with a piston system);
  • carburetor;
  • barbell;
  • starter (rope break, spring breakage or disengagement);
  • with an ignition or fuel supply system;
  • transmission mechanism (gearbox);
  • filters and muffler.

Symptoms of malfunctions are as follows:

  • the appearance of uncharacteristic sounds when operating the lawn mower;
  • the lawn mower does not turn on, does not reach the required speed, or stalls;
  • when the engine is running working part does not rotate or skips;
  • gasoline leak;
  • excessive heating of individual components.

Smaller breakdowns can also occur, which are detected without any special diagnostics:

  • start button sticking;
  • limiter drop;
  • line break or breakage (loss of sharpness) of the knife.

Minor problems are easy to fix. Repair of a petrol trimmer in more difficult cases will require preliminary diagnostics to find out the exact reasons. If you have the appropriate knowledge and skills in plumbing, you can fix problems yourself by replacing failed parts.

Disassembling a gasoline scythe, lubricating its parts and replacing faulty elements

To disassemble the trimmer for repair work will be needed in general case, such devices:

  • a set of screwdrivers (with different tips) and wrenches;
  • small puller for removing bearings;
  • special spark plug wrench;
  • hammer.

In each case, you will need to disassemble individual components.

It should be taken into account that the starter (starter) in a number of models is non-separable - in this case, if there are problems with it, only replacing the element is possible. If the knot is disassembled, it can be repaired by removing and replacing the rope and spring, or installing the latter in place (when it comes out of engagement).

Disassembly and replacement of the rod

Quite often it is necessary to repair the trimmer rod. It is a structure made up of the following parts:

  • a steel drive shaft having polyhedral or square splines at the upper and lower ends;
  • aluminum tubes;
  • a plastic bushing designed to maintain the centralized position of the drive shaft in the tube (to prevent vibration);
  • a rubber shock absorber needed to connect the rod to the motor;
  • steering wheel with a handle used for steering, and a stand, a belt.

Some models have a shock absorber between the steering column and the bar. All control elements(lock lever, ignition switch, gas button) are located on the handle.

A bevel bevel gear is connected to the lower end of the rod, but some lightweight models are produced without it. This is due to the fact that their rod has a curved shape, and the shaft is a flexible cable.

How to disassemble the rod and then reassemble it to lubricate the shaft or replace it is shown in detail in the video below. In the same way, replace a broken rod with a new one.

It often happens that the multi-faceted or square splines of the drive shaft “lick”, while the working mechanism does not rotate or does so with over-slip. Then the shaft is changed.

When appears knocking on the phone, you should disassemble the rod and check the condition of the bushing, and if necessary, replace it. How to properly assemble the throttle handle on a trimmer is discussed in the video below.

If there is no intact rod suitable for installation, then you can tighten the fracture site with a clamp or apply something like a splint. This measure is temporary, so you should replace it as quickly as possible.

Clutch repair

When the knife or fishing line is running while the engine is running idle speed spins almost constantly, and uncharacteristic sounds come from the front of the engine, this indicates a breakdown of the clutch. The cause is a broken spring. At the same time, the equipment mows normally.

If slipping occurs, then in addition the pads are worn out.

The trimmer clutch is repaired as follows:

  • remove the cover from the muffler;
  • remove the metal stand;
  • then remove the cylinder and starter caps to gain access to the clutch;
  • unscrew the side screws to remove the shock absorber cover;
  • remove the tube from it, having previously loosened the tightening bolts;
  • unscrew the clutch (shown in the photo below);

  • inspect the condition of the spring, pads and bearings;
  • a new spring is hooked by threading the hooks into the corresponding holes;
  • To replace the pads, you need to remove the spring, and then unscrew the bolts on them.

If necessary lock the crankshaft using, for example, a rope.

Repair of gasoline engine, carburetor and gearbox

Engine problems can be caused by problems with the piston system, oil seals, and rings. To eliminate them, it is necessary remove drive motor.

Determining what exactly caused the breakdown is not easy. If there is a warranty, you should take the mechanism to a service center for diagnosis and repair. If it is not possible to turn to specialists for help, then it should be borne in mind that most often the piston rings need to be replaced. To do this, you will need to disassemble the engine and remove the piston. They do this in the following sequence:

  • remove the cover of the plastic case by unscrewing the screws or squeezing the clamps;
  • disconnect the rod with the crankshaft;
  • remove the cylinder head;
  • take out the piston and rings;
  • if necessary, replace them;
  • Reassemble in reverse order.

The rings should be installed carefully because they are quite fragile.

How the piston is installed and what happens replacing oil seals when carrying out engine repairs, this is clearly shown in the videos below:

With regular use, the trimmer may gearbox breaks. The gears and bearings wear out (they can also break). To prevent this from happening frequently, this unit should be lubricated regularly. The frequency is almost always indicated in the operating instructions for the model used (at least once a season). The video below can serve as repair instructions.

To lubricate the gearbox, you should unscrew the plug and simply squeeze out a suitable lubricant inside the assembly, turning the shaft.

You can only remove and clean the carburetor yourself, and also replace the gasket between it and the engine. It is quite problematic to determine the tightness of a unit at home. The main thing is to correctly assemble the equipment after repair so that the trimmer works without problems.

Common problems with electric trimmers

Electric trimmers differ from gasoline devices in a more simplified design. Conventionally, the electric scythe is divided into mechanical and electrical part . Accordingly, the same groups of problems that occur with this equipment are identified.

Most breakdowns cannot be visually detected. To do this you will need to use various devices. Visually you can determine the following:

  • the integrity of the power cable is broken (the insulation is torn off it, or it is clearly broken);
  • sticking or jamming of the start button;
  • mechanical external damage to the brush cutter;
  • problems with the cutting part;
  • stopping the scythe when clogged with grass;
  • plug damage.

To find out which part broke in other cases, you will need to disassemble the electric scythe and sequentially check the most likely options. At the same time, pay attention to external manifestations deviations from the normal operation of the device. They help determine the cause.

Repairing an electric trimmer will require the following equipment and tools:

  • indicator screwdriver;
  • multimeter or tester;
  • soldering iron;
  • set of keys;
  • screwdrivers with different bits.

Electric scythes often do not work due to reasons not directly related to them, but caused by a decrease in the supply voltage in the network or the inoperative state of the outlet used.

How to disassemble and repair an electric scythe yourself

Before disassembling and repairing an electric scythe, you should check the condition of the outlet and the voltage in the network. If its value deviates from the norms specified in the operating instructions, then you should not even try to operate the device without stabilizer, designed for the corresponding power. Otherwise, the electric motor may fail. Only after determining that the cause of the trimmer failure is directly related to it, can one begin to disassemble the mechanism for repair purposes.

Disassembly and repair of electrical parts

Disassembling the electric scythe for the purpose of repairing its electrical part is carried out in the following sequence.

The brush and bearing units are shown in the photo below.

The scythe will work without thermostat, you just need to constantly check the temperature of the electric motor yourself, periodically letting it cool down. You can also install a new similar sensor.

The motor start button can be checked by shorting its contacts with a jumper. If the trimmer works, then the problem is clear. But this option is unsafe. Everything should be done carefully so as not to receive an electric shock. To change the button, you should use a screwdriver to remove it from its seat and connect the wiring from the old to the new. After replacement, you need to assemble the electric scythe and then check its functionality.

Replacing brushes required if they are destroyed. In this case, it is enough to pull out the old ones from the grooves and install new ones in their place.

Connection terminals on different models trimmers are almost identical, so connecting and disconnecting wires is done the same way.

Bearing replacement is a rather difficult operation, because it can become stuck and not be removed from the motor shaft. It should be pulled or knocked down carefully so as not to damage the rotor or seat.

Bearing for trimmer ET1003A

When the trimmer motor fails and needs to be replaced with a new one, you should carefully remove the fan and bearings, and then install them in their original place. In terms of costs, replacement is almost comparable to purchasing a new mechanism. If you have no experience working with electric motors, it is better to entrust it to specialists.

Assembling an electric scythe

The instructions for assembling the electrical part of the brush cutter are as follows:

  • install the engine by tightening the mounting screws;
  • connect an electrical circuit;
  • lay the wires neatly between the individual compartments in the existing recesses;
  • close the top cover by snapping the locks and screwing it in place.

After assembly, the functionality of the device is checked.

Gasoline and electric trimmers have a lot of possible breakdowns. In order for the device to be operational for a long time, it should be kept clean and dry. An important point is carrying out regular preventive measures(for example, lubrication of the gearbox) and compliance with the operating rules set out in the instructions for the device. It is better to purchase high-quality equipment from well-known manufacturers.

When disassembling the mechanism, it is recommended to photograph the process step by step so as not to forget anything, and during assembly not to miss a single detail. When replacing parts, you should pay attention to the selection of suitable components: it is better to use original spare parts.

For some models, the rod consists of two parts; a coupling is used to connect them. Such devices are convenient for transportation.

Very common complaints from owners petrol trimmers associated with various types of carburetor malfunctions. Of course, in this case, it is best to seek help from specialists in this field, for whom repairing carburetors of gasoline trimmers is an integral part of their profession. However, if you are still familiar with the basic principles of how a trimmer carburetor works, you can try to figure out the problem yourself so as not to overpay for service, since sometimes the breakdown can be really minor.

This article is intended to help you deal with the problem.

The first step is to inspect the carburetor as a whole and find out if there is any fuel leakage.

If it turns out that there are no problems with the fuel, you need to remove the carburetor from the engine and check the condition of the gasket located next to the carburetor.

If no malfunctions are observed here, you can try checking the carburetor for the degree of tightness.

For this you can purchase special device, which is part of the repair tool kits for repairing the carburetor of brush cutters and is a special pressure gauge, which, in fact, checks the tightness.

If you don’t want to spend money on purchasing it, you can use a regular medical tonometer, on which you just need to change the pressure gauge.

During use of this device, pay attention to the indication.

If the pressure does not drop and remains the same for a long time, you can rest assured, as this indicates that the carburetor is tight.

If the pressure begins to decrease after a certain time, then there are still problems.

They may be associated with damage to any carburetor parts.

Before running to the nearest repair shop or specialized store selling trimmers and spare parts, try to figure out the problem yourself. Sorry for the banality, but the carburetor of a lawn mower is not spaceship extraterrestrial civilization, and it is quite possible to repair it yourself. To be confident in your actions, read step by step instructions presented in this article.

Step-by-step instructions for repairing a lawn mower carburetor

Disassembling the carburetor

A visual inspection of the carburetor will help identify fuel leaks and air intake, but the main reasons for device failure lie internally. Therefore, in order to determine and, most importantly, correct the breakdown, the carburetor must be disassembled.

It doesn’t take much effort to disassemble the carburetor of a lawn mower.

Just unscrew the four screws on one side

and two on the other. This can be done using a regular Phillips screwdriver. Carefully unscrew the screws and put them aside. They may be needed during assembly. It is advisable to cover the table with a white cloth before disassembling so that everything can be seen, even the smallest parts that may fall out during disassembly.

Step #1

We begin disassembly from the side of the fuel supply system.

We remove the primer - the pumping bottle, which is noteworthy; during assembly it is simply impossible to install the carburetor parts incorrectly. The products have characteristic ebbs and holes.

Step #2

Remove the pump cover.

Step #3

Now remove the membrane. It is she who performs the function of pumping fuel into the carburetor.

When the membrane vibrates, the other side exerts pressure on the rocker arm of the mechanism and the needle rises, which, in turn, opens the hole and fuel is supplied.

Step #4

Remove the carburetor cover with the injection mechanism.

Step #5

Step #6

There is another gasket under the membrane. We also carefully remove it, without damaging it in any way.

Step #7

There is a valve here, which, when adding gas, opens and increases the flow of air into the engine.

After removing it, you are left with a bare body in your hands. The carburetor is disassembled.

Troubleshooting and Troubleshooting

Now it’s worth paying attention to the problems that occur during carburetor operation and how to fix them.

Problem 1: Clogged holes, channels and jets with dirt

The first thing that happens is that the holes and jets in the fuel supply system become clogged with dirt. Filters installed in the tank and directly in the carburetor do not help. They still allow small particles to pass through, which cause the mower to fail.

Step #8

Now we need to get the needle.

To do this, unscrew the bolt on the mechanism, holding it with your finger. The fact is, there is a spring there and careless action will lead to it being lost.

We take out the needle (see photo) and the spring.

Step #9

What to do with purging. Most effective way– this is the use of an ultrasonic bath.

It is filled with either a special liquid or gasoline, a carburetor is placed there and under the influence of ultrasound, the so-called cavitation effect, the channels are cleared of contaminants.

The second cleaning option is compressed air.

You can use a compressor available on the farm and clean the carburetor channels. However, this method is effective if the contamination is not very large.

If there is neither an ultrasonic bath nor a compressor at hand, then cleaning can be done in a third way using a special cylinder for cleaning the carburetor. They are sold in almost all auto stores and supermarkets. The price is low and is approximately 2-3 $. This cylinder is enough for 4 or 5 purges.

Step #10

Now we need to blow out the channels in the carburetor body and cover. See photo.

Step #11

Another particle of dirt may get stuck under the needle. See photo. This will also lead to failure of the brush cutter.

Important! When cleaning the carburetor, under no circumstances should you use needles, pins or wires. Even the slightest scratch will damage the carburetor. It will have to be changed entirely.

Problem 2: clogged fine filter

It is located on the carburetor cover and is a fine metal mesh. Its contamination occurs very often. This is due to the deposition of oil, additives, and dirt on it.

Step #12

Sometimes, when disassembling into meshes, a certain film is discovered. This carburetor does not have enough fuel and the brush cutter either does not start or works intermittently. The cleaning methods are identical to the first reason: an ultrasonic bath, a compressor, or a can of a special solution. In addition, if the mesh is thoroughly clogged, you need to take a soft brush for watercolor paints, dip it in gasoline and carefully rinse it without damaging it.

Problem 3: membrane failure

Step #13

They have the ability to wear out during use. From prolonged use, they become deformed, stretch, lose elasticity, low-quality fuel corrodes them, and can no longer perform their functions well. This also applies to the needle itself. The fact is that it is covered with a thin layer of rubber, which wears out during operation and can no longer fit tightly into the hole. The lawn mower begins to work intermittently. To eliminate such a breakdown, it is necessary to replace all worn parts. Where can I get them?

In specialized stores garden equipment We are selling a repair kit for the carburetor of a certain model of brush cutter. The cost of such a repair kit ranges from 40 to 60 hryvnia.

It includes two diaphragms, a gasket, a needle valve and a spring.

All carburetor wear parts can be replaced. Therefore, you should not rush and buy a new one, and you also don’t need to run to the workshop; repairs can be done by any user of a brush cutter. Professionals claim that the quality of the components in the repair kit even exceeds the characteristics of the original carburetor parts. Therefore, a high-quality repaired unit will work better than a new one.

Problem 4: the bubble button for manual fuel pumping is worn out

Step#14

In addition, the bubble button for manually pumping fuel may fail. Exposure to gasoline leads to the fact that during prolonged use, the rubber is corroded and it begins to stick together or under the influence low temperatures, for example, during storage, it bursts. The button should also be replaced if necessary. In addition, its cost is small and will not affect the size of the repair budget.

Based on the above, we can conclude that there are only three main carburetor malfunctions: clogged channels, contamination of the fine filter and failure of components. In the first two cases, cleaning is enough, and in the third, a repair kit will help.

Carburetor assembly

Assembling the carburetor of a brush cutter is not difficult at all. You must perform all the steps in reverse order:

Step #15

Install a spring and a needle valve in the carburetor cover. Holding the spring with your finger, tighten the fastening bolt.

Step #16

Screw the air supply system valve to the product body with two screws.

Step #17

Turn the carburetor over and proceed to the fuel system assembly. First you need to install the gasket.

Step #18

Install the membrane.

Step #19

Place the carburetor cap.

Step #20

Install the main membrane.

Step #21

Place the pump cover.

Step #22

Install the plate with the manual fuel pumping button and tighten the four screws.

The carburetor is assembled and ready for further use.

Repairing a lawn mower carburetor may seem like a complicated process for the first time, but if you have to disassemble it a second time, this procedure will not cause any particular difficulties.

If you do not find any of the listed problems in your carburetor, it is recommended to seek help from a specialized service.

Selected for you:

A gasoline trimmer is a fairly simple and effective device for cutting grass. By design, it occupies a middle position between manual device, since it is supported by weight, and wheeled, since it is driven by an engine. It is used mainly in dachas and suburban areas, therefore, in the event of a breakdown, getting to a workshop or service center is not always possible.

Repairing a lawn mower yourself, if it does not involve replacing the entire assembly, is quite possible.

Device design

The essence of the device's operation is to transmit torque from a power drive - gasoline, electric or battery - to a cutting tool - a knife or fishing line. The transmission mechanism is a shaft located inside the rod. In devices with a curved shaft, its role is played by a steel cable.

The rod is attached to the drive gearbox - two- or four-stroke. When turned on, torque is transmitted through the shaft to the fishing line or knife.

The most complex part of the device is the motor. Damage to the shaft, belts, cutting tool are classified as mechanical breakdowns, but repairing the engine of a lawn mower usually causes difficulties. Some problems associated with contamination of engine components can be eliminated yourself. It is better to entrust replacement of spare parts or adjustments to a specialist.

Engine failure

The breakdown may not be associated with damage to the motor, but with the occurrence of obstacles in its operation. Before you begin disassembling, you should rule out simple breakdowns.

  • Overheating - if a failure occurs after 15 minutes of continuous operation, then the reason is most likely due to elementary overheating. However, an increase in temperature may be caused by grass and dirt clogging the starter grill or cooling fins. A video of repairing a lawn mower demonstrates a method for eliminating the failure - cleaning the grilles and replacing the filters. The photo shows the filter being replaced.

  • Gasoline - the point is not only that it is available in sufficient quantity, but also of sufficient quality. Trimmers are fueled with AI-92 and it is highly undesirable to use gasoline with a lower octane number. This leads to rapid clogging of the carburetor, its rusting, and much more serious breakdowns.
  • The air filter is dirty - cleaning it is part of the standard trimmer care procedures. At the dacha, the filter is washed with gasoline and installed in place. In more suitable conditions wash in water with detergents, dried and fixed back, after moistening it in the fuel mixture. In this case, repairing a Husqvarna or Shtil lawn mower is no different from troubleshooting a Chinese trimmer.

But if all of the above methods are used, then you will have to start disassembling the engine.

Replacing spark plugs

One of the most common reasons failure is contamination or damage to the spark plug - a crack in the housing. In the latter case, the spare part is simply changed.

  1. The work is carried out with the engine turned off and cooled down.
  2. The high voltage cable is disconnected.
  3. The spark plug is unscrewed with a special wrench and inspected.
  4. The presence of deposits on the spark plug indicates poor quality fuel. You can clean spare parts using white alcohol and brake fluid.
  5. If the spark plug is faulty or damaged, it is replaced with a new one: inserted into place and tightened with a wrench.

In some cases, parts can only be used by the same model. But, for example, repairing a Shtil 130 lawn mower in 90% of cases allows you to replace new spare parts with old-style elements.

Starter breakdowns

The trimmer is started as follows: when the cord is pulled, the flywheel pawl engages with the teeth of the starter coil, and then, with a more vigorous tension, it starts the engine. If the launch is too sharp, the impact of the pawls leads to the destruction of the coil.

The second most common reason is a break in the flexible shaft when the coil gets jammed or when the grate becomes clogged with grass and dirt.

Do-it-yourself starter repair with a petrol mower eliminates the possibility. The module is sold as a finished unit and is simply replaced with a new one.

Lawn mower carburetor repair

  1. First of all, the device is inspected from the outside for fuel leaks. Then the fuel hose is blown out, since often the cause of failure is its clogging.
  2. If everything is in order, check the gasket between the engine and the carburetor and replace it if necessary.
  3. A special device or a medical tonometer is used to check the tightness. If the pressure decreases, then the lawn mower requires carburetor repair.
  4. As a rule, you can only disassemble and clean the device yourself. The module is cleaned with gasoline. The nozzle and channels are cleaned with compressed air. If the blockage is very severe, use thin copper wire.

Setting up the device is a rather complicated procedure. If, after assembling and checking the carburetor, the trimmer starts, but immediately stalls, this is a sign of a failure in the settings.

Do-it-yourself repair of lawn mowers is shown in the video using the example of Husqvarna and Shtil machines.

Some useful tips, which will help extend the life of the brush cutter:

Always run at full speed

Use only AI-92 gasoline paired with special 2-stroke oil

Gasoline must be mixed with special 2-stroke oil in the proportion described in the engine instructions

Drain the fuel mixture from the tank at the end of work, or use the mixture completely

Store the fuel mixture in a separate container for no more than two weeks.

A fresh and properly prepared fuel mixture is the key to successful engine operation. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the engine, which will lead to exclusion from warranty service.

After finishing work, take time to clean your tool.
