Adjusting windows for winter. Adjusting plastic windows yourself - video. Modes of plastic windows - what are they and what is it?

A plastic window, even the highest quality and correctly installed, requires periodic maintenance. It can last for several years without any problems, but over time it may feel friction when opening or closing. The second problem is that there is air blowing from under the seal, and the third is that the handle turns with force. All these breakdowns are not complicated and can be easily fixed and there is no need to call a specialist: adjustment plastic windows on your own - a matter of minutes. All you need to do is tighten or loosen a few screws. The main thing is to know where and how. More on this in photo and video format.

Winter and summer mode

Most often, adjustment of plastic windows is required for the new season: in winter, complete tightness is desirable, and in summer, a little fresh air let in. This is achieved by adjusting the sash pressure density. It's easy to do it yourself. Once you figure it out, you’ll be surprised how simple everything is...

The window sash is pressed to the frame using pins. These are movable metal protrusions on the side surface of the sash. When the handle is turned, they move behind the mating metal plates mounted on the frame. In order to be able to adjust the tightness of the fit of the sash and frame, they have an eccentric - either they themselves are made of an oval shape, or in the center of the round protrusion there is an adjustment with an offset center. By changing the position of the trunnions (see photo), you change the degree of pressure, that is, eliminate the draft from under the sash.

As you can see, the shapes of the locking protrusions can be different. To adjust them can be used different instruments. If your window has eccentrics like those in the picture on the left - oval-shaped protrusions - change their position using pliers: clamp it and turn it in the desired direction.

If the locking tab is round, as in the picture on the left, it can be slotted for a screwdriver or hex key. After examining them, you will easily understand which tool you need: a regular screwdriver or a No. 4 hexagon. Insert a key or screwdriver into the slot and also turn it to the desired position.

Place all the protrusions in the same position. Please note that they are not only on one side of the sash - the outer one, but also on the inner side (at least one, but there is one), and can also be at the top and bottom. Set all the existing locking lugs in the same position, otherwise the frame will warp and there will be blowing from under it.

When adjusting the fittings of plastic windows, remember that weak pressure corresponds to the summer mode of closing plastic windows, standard or strong pressure corresponds to the winter mode. If preventative work carry out in winter, first set it to the standard position and check if there is airflow. It is not recommended to immediately pinch the rubber bands on new PVC windows. In this position, the rubber seal installed around the perimeter is strongly pressed. Because of this, over time it loses elasticity. A normal seal has a 15-year warranty, but still... If the pressure is immediately set to maximum, the rubber will deteriorate faster. As a result, once again setting the winter position on the plastic windows, you will find that it is still blowing from under the sash, and the rubber is all cracked. This means it's time to change the seal. This is also not very difficult, but it takes more time, and you still need to buy tires.

So: the winter and summer positions of plastic windows are set by changing the position of the locking lugs - trunnions. Everything is explained in detail in the video below. After viewing, adjusting plastic windows yourself will finally cease to be a problem.

How to adjust a window so it doesn't blow

Sometimes, plastic windows, even after moving the trunnions to the position of strong pressure, are not airtight - there is a blow from under the sash and replacing the rubber does not help. This usually happens when the house shrinks. In this case, they say that the window sags. When this happens, contact between the locking lug and the strike plate is lost. When you turn the handle, the protrusion-trunnion should go behind the plate, pressing the sash. If this does not happen and drafts occur, the heat is blown out of the room.

Where are the trunnions (pressing lugs) usually located?

When a plastic window sag, the adjustment is different: you need to move the sash so that those protrusions that do not reach the plates catch on them.

First you need to decide which of the trunnions do not reach the locking plates. This is done mechanically. First, inspect the sash, remember where the protrusions are. Close the window. Grasp the sash frame where the trunnions are installed and pull it towards you.

If there is contact, the frame remains motionless, if not, it moves. So you check in which places there is no contact and determine in which direction the sash needs to be moved. This is done by adjusting the lower and upper loops.

Bottom Hinge Adjustment

If the PVC window somewhere below does not close, we will move the sash using the lower hinge. There are two adjustments: one in the horizontal plane - moves closer to the hinge or further from it, and the second - in the vertical - raises or lowers the sash a couple of millimeters.

To move bottom part the doors are closer or further to the hinge, it opens. At the bottom of the sang there is an adjustment hole for a hex key (sometimes for an asterisk).

A hexagon is inserted into it, turning it clockwise brings the lower corner closer to the loop, and turning it counterclockwise moves it away. Move the sash a little and try to close/open it. Once the result is achieved, stop. If the resource is turned all the way, but there is no result, return everything to its original position: this is the wrong adjustment.

This screw can be used to correct the situation if, when closing the window, the sash touches the frame at the bottom. By bringing it a little closer to the loop, you will eliminate this problem.

There is a second adjustment screw on the bottom hinge. To get to it, you need to place the sash for ventilation and remove the decorative trim. It can be easily removed, you just need to pull the bottom edge towards you a little (1-2 mm) and pull it up. After removing the protective cap, you will see a recess in the upper part. A 4 mm hexagon is inserted into it. Turning it clockwise raises the sash slightly, turning it counterclockwise lowers it.

We talk in detail about how to remove the decorative cover on the hinge, how and how to adjust the bottom hinge on a PVC window in the following video.

Adjusting the top hinge

If the top corner of a plastic window does not close, you need to move it. To do this, open the window at least 90°. You can do less, but it will be inconvenient to work. There is a hinge at the top of the sash. It differs in design from the bottom one, but it also has a hole for a hexagon.

The adjustment screw is on the side. By rotating it, we move the sash further from the hinge (if the trunnions farthest from the hinge do not close) or closer to the hinge. One thing - there must be a gap of several millimeters between the sash and the hinge: it is necessary for the tilt and turn mechanism to fit there. Therefore, turn the key half a turn and check how the window opens/closes.

Sometimes this adjustment does not help. Then it is required press the top corner against the frame. There is another screw for this - on the tilt and turn mechanism. To have access to this screw, you will have to open the window in two positions at once. To do this, open the sash and press the lock. It usually comes in two designs - in the form of a locking loop or a tongue (see photo below).

The blocker is retracted all the way, holding it, the handle is turned for ventilation, the upper edge of the sash is pulled slightly towards you, and the rotating mechanism is opened. A device that holds the sash open. On one of the plates there is a protrusion for the same hex key. By turning it, you can adjust the tightness of the upper corner of the sash. It is necessary if the upper corner of the plastic window does not close.

You can watch the video again to see how to adjust plastic windows yourself. Explanations to the point, accessible and without unnecessary words.

The plastic window does not close

Sometimes the geometry of the window opening changes so much that even moving the sash to the maximum, we do not get the desired result: the plastic window does not close. What to do in this case? If there is an adjustment on the mating part, as in options a and b in the photo, try to get by with a little damage - tighten it further here. The principle is the same: insert the hex key and rotate it clockwise, pushing it to the maximum.

If a few millimeters are missing not in depth, but sideways, then will have to be installed under the mating part of the lining. They are cut from a piece of white plastic. The maximum thickness is 3-4 mm. First, unscrew the screws and remove the stops. Two gaskets are cut out: one is installed from below, the second from the side. As a result, the stop moves 3 mm deeper into the sash.

Installed first on Right place linings, on them there is a stop, which is screwed with a self-tapping screw. Protruding pieces of plastic are cut off sharp knife. Check whether the window closes or not.

If this does not help, there is another way: move the sash frame. It is quite flexible and can be moved about 5mm. The procedure is as follows:

If you look closely, you can see that the frame is slightly curved. The main thing is that the window now closes. In 99% of cases this is enough. If you are unlucky and all these tricks do not produce results, you need to remove the slopes and also bend the frame.

You can watch all the steps described above in the video.

Adjusting and replacing handles

A fairly common problem: the handle is difficult to turn. If the problem is not eliminated in time, due to excessive efforts, it breaks, leaving a short stump with which you definitely can’t do anything.

First, how to make the handle close again easily. The locking mechanisms must first be cleaned and lubricated. First, accumulated dust and dirt are removed, wiped dry, then all moving parts are lubricated. Must be used pure oils, without alkalis and acids. The best option— engine oil, you can use any analogue or modern remedy from a can.

Having lubricated all the rubbing and moving parts, open/close the sash several times and turn it on its hinges. Everything should move smoothly, without jerking.

If there are still problems, most likely during the process of adjustments or changes in the geometry of the window, the blocker has shifted. It should fit easily into the mating part and press tightly against the frame. Then the handle turns easily. Move the sash and try again.

Now about how to change the handle. The fastener on which it is held is hidden under a decorative overlay. If you look closely, you will see that there is a thin lid. You grab it with your fingers or pry it with your nails, pull it slightly toward you and turn it to one side. Two bolts open. They are unscrewed, the handle is removed, and a new one is put in its place.

We looked at the most common problems and how to fix them. Now not only is adjusting plastic windows not a problem for you, you can also do minor repairs yourself. You can also do it yourself service maintenance(greasing once a year).

For many modern models there are plastic windows undeniable advantage- possibility of switching to winter and summer mode. This is a very useful function for our latitudes, where temperature changes between seasons are very noticeable. Today we will talk about the features of such windows and how to use them correctly.

Is this function necessary on plastic windows?

With the onset of cold weather, even from the sealed structure of a plastic window you can feel the air blowing. In winter, it is very important to keep the room warm. Therefore, switching the window to winter mode must be done without waiting for frost. But if you do not feel any discomfort or draft from a window in summer mode, then you should not switch it: winter mode can greatly wear out the structure.

Correctly adjusted mode will help you maintain a comfortable indoor climate

In summer, on the contrary, constant ventilation and access of fresh air from outside to the room are required. Switching a plastic window to summer mode ensures the above without letting in dust, dirt and heat from the street, unlike a regular window.

How to determine whether it is possible to change windows to winter/summer

Accessories for PVC windows can be budget, standard and specialized. The cost of such double-glazed windows increases accordingly. When you move into a new building, you will most likely find windows of the first type - budget. Their fittings provide only two positions: open and closed. If you want to install other windows, please note: designs with standard and specialized fittings do not always have the function of switching to winter summer modes.

Carefully inspect the ends of the window sashes near the locking hardware. In a frame equipped with a winter mode, a trunnion is visible - a protruding mode lever. It can be in the form of a hexagon, asterisk or washer with a horizontal groove for a screwdriver.

An example of a trunnion that allows you to switch the window to winter and summer mode

On some models of trunnion profiles (the eccentric) first extends above the surface, and after adjustment it is pressed back. But on most modern windows eccentrics look like hexagons small size with a recess for a key, or as convenient ovals.

In the windows standard size There are 5 eccentrics: three near the handle, at the end of the sashes, and one each near the upper edge, at the top and at the bottom. These trunnions provide pressure on the sash, preventing it from sagging. How larger size windows, the more eccentrics are located around the perimeter. Proper distribution of the load between the locks ensures maximum tightness in winter and good ventilation in summer.

Hardware conversion technology

This process is quite simple, but do not forget that incorrect translation can damage the fittings and even break them. Therefore, be extremely careful when switching a plastic window to winter mode.

Switching fittings to winter mode

  1. Find all the pins on the window sash. You need to translate each of them.
  2. Take suitable tool- screwdriver, hexagon or pliers. Turn each eccentric clockwise to the maximum possible position.
  3. Some types of fittings have a peculiarity: the eccentrics must be pulled towards you before adjustment (like a winding mechanism in wristwatch), and after the fittings are transferred, recess them back. Specify such features when purchasing a window so that you do not have to call specialists at the wrong time.
  4. Check the result of the work done. To do this, you need to close the window and pay attention to how tightly the handle turns. Since in winter mode the fittings press the sash especially tightly, the window handle should also close tightly.

Note! There is a simple way to check the pressing force of the sash. Place a piece of paper between the frame and the sash before closing the window. Then pull the sheet towards you. If it comes out freely, then the window remains in summer mode. If the paper is stuck tightly and breaks when you try to pull it out, congratulations, the procedure for switching to winter mode was a success!

To switch the window to summer mode, you need to turn the locking pin in the opposite direction, counterclockwise.

Switch your windows to seasonal mode once every six months. However, do not forget that metal plates may require adjustment due to frequent use. To protect your windows from damage, regularly clean the sashes and fittings from dirt and lubricate them according to the instructions.

In the summer, few owners of a private house or apartment notice that the plastic windows do not fit tightly to the frame. However, in winter, the presence of cracks leads to drafts. Through the window, heat from the room begins to escape outside faster. This entails an increase in energy bills.

To retain heat inside the premises, preventing it from penetrating through the cracks of loosely closed sashes to the outside, you will need to carry out the correct setting up plastic windows for the winter. This procedure can be done with your own hands. Expert advice will help you understand this technology.

Need for adjustment

Must be held every year. This procedure is necessary for several reasons. It won't take much time, but it will help increase performance characteristics windows

In the process of carrying out such work, the master ensures a tighter fit of the seals to the frame. Tuning is also carried out in the summer. Only it, on the contrary, allows you to weaken the clamping force. IN winter period A tighter fit of the sashes to the frame will save on electricity and gas.

Also, the presented procedure helps to extend the life of plastic windows. In the process of carrying out this work, the master carries out maintenance of fittings and other structural elements. With proper adjustment, dust from the street will not enter the room.

What do they pay attention to?

Setting up plastic windows in winter and summer must be carried out comprehensively. It is not enough to simply tighten the pressure of the sashes to the frame. During the work process, you need to pay attention to the fittings and check whether they function correctly. Special attention should be given to the handles. They should not be loose or, conversely, too tight.

It is necessary to evaluate the quality of the rubber seals. During use, they may lose their elasticity. If you press them harder against the frame, there is no guarantee of obtaining the desired result. In winter, drafts will appear. Maybe, sealing rubber bands will need to be replaced. Setting up plastic windows for the winter with your own hands It’s quite simple to perform, but you need to know the specifics of this procedure.

What should you consider before starting work?

It is worth remembering some nuances when performing manipulations with plastic windows. “Winter” and “summer” modes are not provided for all designs. How to determine whether a window can be configured in this way will be discussed below.

It should also be noted that windows should still be opened in winter. Some owners of a house or apartment, after carrying out such adjustments, begin to observe the appearance of condensation. Why does a plastic window sweat from the inside in winter? easy to understand. Insufficient ventilation leads to increased humidity in the room. It is this reason that explains the appearance of condensation or fungus. Therefore, having configured the window correctly for the winter period, you should still pay due attention to ventilation of the room.

Carry out the setup yourself if incorrect installation windows won't work. Over time, such structures sag. Therefore, their adjustment will not be able to solve the problem of drafts. Additional correction will be required.

Required Tools

Produced using certain tools. Most often they are in stock home handyman. If some devices are not available, they should be purchased before setting up.

First of all, you must have a hex wrench available. Most often for window settings A tool with a diameter of 4 mm is required. But it is better to prepare other key sizes. You may also need star-shaped screwdriver bits. Such products are marked with the letters TX or T.

You should prepare a regular Phillips screwdriver. Some actions will need to be performed using pliers or pliers. You also need to purchase WD-40. This is a special oil made in aerosol format. More often adjusting plastic windows for winter made using only a hexagon. But sometimes a star-shaped attachment may be required.

Setting the pressing of the sash to the frame

Studying the question of how to tighten plastic windows for the winter, you need to start with the procedure for adjusting the force of pressing the sash against the frame. In summer, seals due to high temperatures can expand. In winter, the cold causes them to shrink. This leads to drafts. In order not to change the rubber edging on the window, you should adjust the sealing force of the sash.

This procedure cannot be performed on all window models. The design must include special hooks. Trunnions will also be needed for adjustment. They are located at the end of the sash. These are oval parts that protrude outward. If there are none in the sash, it means that the window cannot be adjusted.

The hooks are on the frame. The pins get into them when the window is closed. The hooks press the sash tightly to the frame. To make the adjustment, you will need to adjust either the trunnions or the hooks. This is a simple manipulation that anyone can handle.

Pulling up the trunnion

Exists simple technology Togo, how to tighten plastic windows for the winter. Most often, this procedure is performed with a trunnion. To do this you will need a hex wrench. If the socket configuration is different, you will need to use a special tool.

To adjust the trunnion, the key is turned clockwise or counterclockwise. If you make revolutions in inner side, the pressing force on the sash will increase. Action in the opposite direction, on the contrary, will weaken it. Don't put too much pressure on the pin.

How to transfer plastic windows for winter? In the process of solving this problem, it should be noted that only a few revolutions are enough to achieve the desired result. After this, you need to try to close the sash. If necessary, the trunnion must be adjusted again.

Adjustment of other types of structures

Some window models do not provide such a setting. In this case, you can try to adjust the hooks. Such structural elements are located on the frame. They are held in place by two bolts. Next you need to unscrew the clamps a little and move the clamp. It can be moved closer to the street or to the room. This will also allow you to adjust the clamping force.

To rearrange plastic windows that have a ventilation function for winter conditions, you will need to carry out slightly different manipulations. Hex bolts are hidden in such structures with special plugs. They look like caps.

When these adjustment elements are found, you should also turn them clockwise. In this case, the pressing force will increase. You can loosen the fasteners in the summer by turning the bolts in the opposite direction.

Knob Setting

In the process of resolving the issue regarding whether how to winterize plastic windows, you need to consider the situation when the cause of the draft is the incorrect operation of the window handle. If this structural element becomes loose, you just need to tighten the mounting bolt. You will need to remove the protective plastic cover and tighten the bolt with a screwdriver.

If the handle fails over time, it will need to be replaced. The old device must be dismantled according to a similar scheme. A new handle is installed in its place.

If this element sticks or begins to turn too tightly, its mechanism may need to be lubricated. First, the structure is dismantled. Using a brush, carefully apply machine oil to the internal parts of the handle. If you use VD-40, you need to apply the oil using a tube pointwise.

Adjusting the sash in case of sagging

May require more complex manipulations. For sashes that are large in size, sagging is likely to occur. This problem also occurs with windows that are opened and closed frequently. Leaving the sash in the open position for a long time can also affect its functionality.

If the sash is sagging, it will touch the frame in a certain place. In some cases it may not close at all. It is best to call a specialist from the company that installed the structure. If the owners want to make the adjustment themselves, they will need to find out the brand and model of the window.

Further on the company’s website it is recommended to find a diagram of the fittings. Most often, the sash sags in the lower or middle part. In this case, you will need to debug the main fittings that the manufacturer uses for its windows. It is responsible for holding the window and guiding its main structural elements.

Sash alignment process

It is not a complicated process. However, in the case of adjusting sagging sashes, a little work is required, trying to ensure equal clamping of the fasteners along the entire perimeter of the frame.

First you need to close the window. Using a pencil, outline the outline of the sash. If it is uneven, tighten the fasteners. This is done in a similar way. You just need to loosen or tighten the fasteners. The only difficulty is that you need to know where the clamps are installed.

If the marked line has a concave position in the center, then the bolt is too tight here. It will need to be loosened a little. In the same way, distortions along the edges of the canvas are eliminated. The main thing is not to overtighten or loosen the fastening too much.

To adjust the hinges, you will need to perform similar actions. You need to tighten the fasteners using a hex key. The window may also sag in these places. Therefore, by releasing or tightening the loops, you will need to adjust the correct position of the canvas.

Setting up plastic windows for winter is not difficult work. Special organizations charge quite high fees even for simply performing the procedure. Therefore, if malfunctions occur, it is quite possible to perform the procedure yourself.

If you pay due attention to window settings, plastic structures can work up to 40 years. Proper adjustment will keep the rubber seals in good condition. good condition for a long time. If necessary, it will be possible to level the sagging sashes.

Such simple manipulations will allow you to operate the window for a long period. To know what to do in a given situation, it is recommended to carefully review the window manufacturer’s instructions. It clearly describes the features of a particular model. Today, structures of various configurations are being installed. Their adjustment may vary significantly.

Having looked at how to do setting up plastic windows for the winter, every private property owner will be able to do this work independently.

The majority of the population appreciates plastic windows for their ease of use and easy care. But few people know that they require constant attention. Fittings need to be cleaned and lubricated. An important point is the adjustment of plastic windows for the winter - this procedure will not only save heat in the house, but also minimize the negative effects of cold, humid air on the sealing elements.

When a window needs adjustment

You can tell if a window needs maintenance based on the following signs:

  • the sash touching the frame when opening it;
  • loose fit of the sash, drafts, water penetration inside during rains;
  • severe fogging of windows, ice formation on glass;
  • opening/closing is difficult and requires a lot of effort.

In these cases, it is necessary to pay close attention to the window, and before the onset of the cold season, it is advisable to adjust the plastic windows for the winter. You can do it yourself if you have a little experience or by contacting a specialist.

Window adjustment before winter - is it necessary?

Many people, after using their windows for a long time, do not know that they needed to be adjusted. Companies that install these structures often forget to inform about this need. Before switching plastic windows to winter mode, you should carefully inspect the seal. It must be cleaned of dirt and lubricated with a special silicone-based lubricant.

After this, the sash must be provided with maximum pressure - in winter time this will ensure minimal heat loss. Correctly setting up plastic windows for the winter will allow you to forget about drafts and freezing. This adjustment must be carried out on all windows that are more than three years old. This is due to the gradual wear of the seal.

To switch to the winter position, you need to rotate the trunnion located at the end of the fittings. It is equipped with notches; in the winter position, the notch “looks” into the room - this guarantees maximum pressure.
