What are playing cards?

Cards are products made of heavy-duty plastic, specially prepared cardboard or thin paper, depicting various motifs, collected in a set for use in a variety of

  • card games
  • in fortune telling
  • in magic tricks
  • or for card tricks

As a rule, all cards are palm-sized so that they are comfortable to hold in your hands.

A complete set of cards is called a deck of cards.
    - a deck with 36 cards is called a small deck of playing cards
    - a deck with 52 cards - large or Anglo-American.
The deck of cards is unified; one deck of cards can be used in many different games, some of which include a gambling component - playing for money.

The front side of each card, as it is also called the picture or “face” of the card, is marked.
The back side of the cards is called the “back”, in most cases it is a simple and at the same time elegant pattern.

All cards can be divided into several groups:

1. Playing cards- the most common type of cards on our planet, 92% of the population have at least once held one of them in their hands.

2. Fortune telling cards(the most common among them are cards Tarot) - depending on the style used, various famous decks received names:
- Egyptian Tarot - Egyptian motifs on card pictures
- Marseille Tarot - cards in french style 17th century
- Visconti-Sforza Tarot cards - cards made in the style of the Italian Renaissance
- Rider-Waite Tarot cards - cards drawn at the beginning of the twentieth century, this is the most popular deck of Tarot cards, leaving many clones and descendants behind it
- Thoth Tarot cards - the last fundamental work of the master Aleister Crowley, which summarizes all his knowledge and beliefs
- Lenormand Tarot cards - Lenormand cards also belong to the category of fortune telling cards

3. Cards for tricks or cards for magic tricks- card manipulations and small card magic shows will be available to you with these cards.

4. Solitaire cards- in most cases, standard playing cards are suitable for playing your favorite solitaire game (be it a small 32-card deck or a large 52-card deck of playing cards, it all depends on the type of solitaire).

5. Specific cards- cards that could have been included in one of the categories above, but for some reason did not get there, since the emphasis was not on the game or ease of handling them in card tricks, namely their specifications, are divided into their own subcategories:
- cards for children - educational cards with very bright and memorable pictures with fairy-tale characters
- comic cards - cards with funny pictures, parodies of famous people, this also includes political cartoons and the like
- cards with erotic photographs - erotic cards and cards with porn photos, I think, do not need comments

Depending on the material, playing cards are divided into:
- cardboard cards
- plastic-coated cards (lamination) - high-tech cards with a thin layer of plastic applied over the card to give strength and excellent sliding characteristics.

Playing cards come in the following sizes:
-playing cards standard size or bridge size - 57 x 89 mm.
-poker playing cards or poker-sized cards - 63 x 88 mm.
-cards unusual shapes(triangular, round or 5 times larger) - these cards are made more for fun than for a serious card game and can be an excellent and original gift for a gambler.

Playing cards are divided according to the number of cards in the deck:
- small deck of cards - there are 36 cards in the deck, the rules of games such as fool, whist, preference, point, king, thousand allow playing with a small deck...
- large deck of cards - there are 52 cards in the deck plus an additional 2 jokers, a large deck of cards is a necessary condition for the following card games: poker, bridge, blackjack, baccarat, sec...
-cards for a specific game - the number of cards in such decks is non-standard; such a deck always includes the rules of a given game. For example, a deck of cards for the game of pinochle has 48 cards - 2 sets of tens, jacks, queens, kings and aces; for another exciting game of canasta, a double large deck with additional jokers is assumed.

The history of the appearance of playing cards.

Rarely a modern person did not hold playing cards in his hands.
There are several versions of their appearance, and researchers have not yet come to a consensus on this matter.
Cards have an ancient and very dramatic history. It has long been believed that cards were invented in France to amuse the mentally ill King Charles VI the Mad, but this is just a legend. After all, already in Ancient Egypt played with cuttings with numbers marked on them, in India - with ivory plates or shells; In China, maps similar to modern ones have been known since the 12th century.

Which tells you how to independently make high-quality, beautiful, durable and, importantly, inexpensive cards. This material is highly recommended for anyone who makes toys using scissors and a printer. Special thanks to the user who wrote all this under the nickname Pard.

From time to time, a real gamer needs to make playing cards for some game. For example, you came across a game on foreign language, and you are not going to play its original cards anyway. In order for this idea - to print your own cards - to succeed, you need to solve several problems:

Convenient design,
- high-quality printing,
- protection against cheating,
- durability.

Experiencedly I found - it seems to me - optimal ways solutions to these problems. Let's look at them in order.

1. User-friendly design
Cards should be easy to play: a clear picture, a straight frame, readable text, a beautiful back.

Although in different games there are cards of the most different sizes, it is better to make them the same size - 6x9 cm. In this case, the card frame can vary in width from 3 to 5 mm (in the figure - 3 mm):

It is best to make the card frame white, and print marks for cutting cards in the corners of the shirt (see point 3). It is advisable to make a rounding in the picture of the shirt - this will also help with cutting. It is impossible to print the entire line of cutting cards - when cutting cards there will still be its remains, and they will be different for all cards, which is unacceptable (see paragraph 4).

Having decided, for example, to make a frame of cards measuring 3 mm, you make a card measuring 5.4x8.4 mm, distribute all the necessary pictures and inscriptions in it, and then increase the canvas size to 6x9 cm - in this case you will get a frame of the required width.

2. High quality printing
Cards should be printed on double-sided matte photo paper, for example “Lomond, 200 g/m2, A4, matt double-sided”. Any normal inkjet photo printer, for example “Epson Styles R300”, will produce output of sufficient quality.

In order for the pictures of the front part and back of the card to match, you should make several test prints on an A4 sheet of 18x27 cm grid (this grid is obtained by placing 9 cards on a sheet):

By moving the printer guides, find the position of the sheet inserted for printing in which the picture is printed strictly in the center of the A4 sheet. In this case, by turning over the sheet with the back pictures, you will print the front pictures of the cards and they will match. If the guides do not help, you will have to add a white border of the desired width to the printed sheet, on the left or right - this will allow the design to move so that it matches the design printed on the reverse side.

3. Protection against cheating
To prevent players from remembering the cards, their backs must be exactly the same (so, for example, you cannot print cards on paper with some kind of solid pattern on the back - in this case, all the card backs will be different).

Having printed the side of the sheet with the card backs, examine them carefully - if some cards have noticeable printing defects, then these cards will have to be reprinted.

Having printed the sheets on both sides, cut them along the corner marks of the cards on a photo cutter - with scissors you will never get such a straight line as on it - first cut the paper along the outer marks, and then along the inner ones.

As a result, you will receive 9 rectangular cards that need to be rounded, which will help you with ordinary scissors and skillful hands. Try to make the curve parallel to the curve of the back (if you took care of it at the card design stage, of course). If you have rounded some card clearly worse than others, it is better to reprint it so that it is not noticeable in the game.

4. Durability
Surprisingly, homemade cards can be made more durable than industrially printed ones, and lamination can help you with this. There are many laminating films on sale, but it’s best to find one that you don’t have to cut (since it’s impossible to do it properly by hand) - “Laminating Pouch Film, LKC., Ltd., Korea, Size 65×95, Thickness 125 mic.” These films are ideal for 6x9 cm cards:

Having inserted the cards (all in one direction), process them in a laminator at a temperature of 150 ° C, having previously placed them in an A4 sheet of plain paper folded in half - so that the edges of the cards do not accidentally bend, or, worse, they are not pulled into the laminator (in this case it you will have to disassemble it, and you will lose half a day and a lot of nerves anyway). I haven’t tried it, but perhaps the same procedure can be carried out with a regular iron, trying to iron (through tracing paper?) from the fold side of the film and avoiding the formation of air gaps.

Laminated cards are slightly thicker than regular ones, but they are very durable and do not deteriorate. If suddenly a corner of the card begins to peel off, pass it through the laminator (inside a sheet of paper!) and it will be sealed again.

Inkjet printed cards cannot be left in the sun - they will quickly fade - and this is their main disadvantage (compared to industrial cards).

Cards should be stored in some kind of boxes. Successfully tested options are as follows:
- boxes of sheets for lamination,
- hand-made cardboard boxes from a pack of Lomond sheets,
- plastic box from Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

5. Price
The approximate cost of cards made using this technology consists of the following values:

Paper - 50 sheets (9 cards each) - 200 rubles - 0.45 rubles / card,
- printing - 1 double-sided sheet (9 cards) - 10 rubles - 1.11 rubles / card,
- sheets for lamination - 100 pieces - 120 rubles - 1.20 rubles / card.
