PS3 reads. Simple actions will revive the PS3's work with discs; more complex ones are almost impossible. We're trying to do something more serious.

Game console PlayStation 3 can almost completely replace Personal Computer. This console allows the owner to do literally everything that can be done on a computer. With its help you can listen to music, movies and play special games. As for music, photos and videos, you first need to transfer them to the console itself. There are several ways to do this. For example, you can transfer using a USB flash drive or use a special application.

It's no secret that the PlayStation 3 has two USB ports. One can be used as a charger for joysticks, and in the other you can install a USB flash drive, which will contain music, photos or videos. Then all that remains is to turn on the set-top box itself and select the appropriate item in the XMB menu.

As for the multimedia application, firstly, for it to work you will need a PlayStation 3 connection to the network, and secondly, you will need a computer connected to the same network. The application itself is called PlayStation 3 Media Server and it is installed on your computer. After installation, you need to launch the application on both devices and wait until the program finds the PlayStation 3 and synchronizes with it (or do it manually). After this, the user has the opportunity to download various files from the computer to the console.

Supported formats and extensions

As a matter of fact, the PlayStation 3 console itself supports all modern video, audio and photo formats, so there shouldn’t be any problems with this. For example, supported video formats are: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS,TS), H.264/MEPG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 SP (the files themselves will have the following extensions: .mpg, .mpeg, .mp1 , .mp2, .mp3, .m1v, .m1a, .m2a, .mpa, .mpv). As for audio recordings, the supported formats are: ATRAC (.oma .msa .aa3), AAC (.3gp .mp4), MP3 (.mp3), WAV (.wav). The image formats, in turn, will be the following: JPEG (.jpg, .jpe), GIF(.gif), PNG (.png), TIFF (.tif), BMP (.bmp, .dip).

Thus, it turns out that if you are trying to run a file with one of the extensions presented above, you can be 95% sure that it will run for you. A few percent remains that the file may turn out to be broken, or unexpected errors will occur in the system itself, or some other kind of problem will arise.

One of the most unpleasant and intractable. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that Sony does not provide spare parts and units for its Playstation. Therefore, in case of replacement, you will definitely come across left ones from other disassembled consoles. In any case, there is no need to panic, everything can be much simpler than it seems, you will still be able to enjoy your favorite game more than once if you show composure and are consistent.

What does the manufacturer offer?

If your PS3 doesn't see the disc, it doesn't hurt to start by remembering simple tips manufacturer:

We're trying to do something more serious.

More serious actions are associated with more serious problems than a scratch on a disc.

The main thing, most likely, is that over time the power of the optical head beam has depleted. In fact, the power of the beam is gradually and constantly decreasing, but in your case this drop has simply reached a critical point. Different speed fall depends on different conditions operation, one might say differently - the different passions of the PS3 owner.

But the reading head may simply reduce its performance as a result of dust settling on it.

The first conclusion that can be drawn from this is that you should not use the console in dusty places.

Secondly, you should not use low-quality disks, they are also a source of damage to the reading head.

As the practice of some services shows, in 6 cases out of 10 the problem is related to the laser head, in 2 cases - to the mechanical drive, another reason may lie in the control board, and sometimes the reason cannot be identified at all.

But this does not change the essence, the PS3 is not a device that, solving the problem - the PS3 does not read discs, what to do - you can get into and think that it will go away with impunity.

Anyway:

  • simply replacing the drive will not work, since it is connected by a password, cryptographically, to the control electronics;
  • It will not be possible to replace the board itself for the same reason.

If the optical head really went bad, then you could buy it - the market will offer several options. You just need to be aware that the head will be scorched, not original from Sony, the company simply does not produce its spare parts (separately, to the market, at least).

You can also change the entire drive, again not original from Sony; for this you will need to remove the board to replace the firmware on it. This is a way out, but only for “non-proprietary”, custom firmware that is free from cryptography restrictions.

If you are still wondering whether to install firmware on your PS3 or not, find out from this article what benefits you will get. And also about what disadvantages the firmware has. Make a decision after weighing all the pros and cons.

PS 3 firmware is the installation of a modified software. The official firmware version is replaced with a custom one and a special MultiMan or Rogero Manager shell is installed, which makes launching games more convenient.

What will you get by flashing your console?

If you install the firmware on the PlayStation 3, you will be able to:

Burn games from licensed discs or downloaded from the Internet to the internal disk of the console (these games can be copied to the console via ftp or from a flash drive). In the future, you will not need discs to run these games.

Run games not only from disks and internal memory, but also from an external USB drive or flash drive. These can also be games downloaded from the Internet or copied from licensed discs.

Use homebrew - unofficial programs for PS3 - more convenient file managers and shells for launching games, video players, etc.

In other words:

You save money on games (you don't have to buy them anymore)

You save drive life (you don’t have to use it at all)

You expand the capabilities of your console

Agree, these are good reasons to flash the PlayStation 3. However, the firmware also has some disadvantages.

PlayStation 3 firmware

Disadvantages of the firmware

Sony provides the service network games PSN for most of its consoles. Including for PS3. But the PSN network has a DNAS security system that can detect unlicensed versions of games. In this case you will be banned. To avoid this, play only licensed games online and do not use homebrew programs while online.

In other words, the firmware features can only be used when you are disconnected from the PSN network. And even in this case, the possibility of a ban remains.

But this is not the biggest drawback of the firmware (and if you are not interested in multiplayer, then this is not a drawback at all). The firmware has another bold minus.

The worst news

So, you were delighted with the new possibilities and decided to flash your console. But don’t rush to take it to a repair shop or download firmware from the Internet for self-installation. The fact is that

Not all PlayStation 3 models can be flashed

You can only flash set-top boxes with official software version no higher than 3.55. If you have more than a new version, then you need to do a downgrade - downgrade the version of the official shell to a “flashed” one.

Downgrade requires connecting a special programmer (E3 flasher). Therefore, downgrade must be done in a specialized workshop. You, of course, can downgrade the firmware version yourself, but the cost of the programmer required for this will be even higher than a downgrade with subsequent firmware update at a service center. That is, by giving your set-top box to specialists for firmware, you will save money and receive a guarantee for all work.

Unfortunately, not all models can be downgraded for further firmware. All “thick curling irons” are being downgraded (and therefore flashed) - that is, PS 3 FAT, which were produced before July 2009. The PS3 Slim series includes consoles released before 2010 and some revisions released in the first half of 2011.

PlayStation 3 SuperSlim and PS3 Slim, produced since July 2011, cannot be downgraded or flashed! But on most of them you can install ODE, which has similar functionality.

How do I know if my console is flashing?

If you have a PS3 Super Slim, it's definitely not flashing (yet).

If you have a PlayStation 3 Slim, you will need to know your specific firmware model and release date. This information is written on the back panel of the console.

The PS3 Slim console series is designated by the code CECH2*** or CECH3***, where *** are numbers indicating a specific model. The release date is indicated using DATA CODE of the form 0A. The number indicates the year of release (0 is 2010; 2011 is indicated by one), and the letter indicates the quarter in which the prefix was released: A - I (from January to March); D - IV (October to December) The second and third quarters are designated by the letters B and C, respectively.

Once you know the model and release date, call our service center, and the experts will answer you - is it possible, or on it (drive emulator).

What does 4D reality mean for PLAYSTATION 3?

4D, based on the beliefs of the developers, is a progression of life in time, when every material object in the game world lives and constantly changes.

This can be done using dynamic processing of procedural textures. Now only two platforms can cope with this task: a cool PC, costing a few thousand dollars and...

Of the currently announced titles for PS3, 4D graphics are used in Killzone 2, White Knight Story and Eight Days.

Procedural textures are the textures associated with the method. Instead of drawing the new texture pixel by pixel, you define a way to change the pixels of the old one to make the final texture.

Technical properties of the set-top box

The theoretical power of the PlayStation 3 is two trillion floating point operations per second (2 teraflops), which is 35 times greater than the capabilities of the PlayStation 2.

The PS3's microprocessor is the Cell Broadband Engine, a multi-core microprocessor jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba Corporation. Cell consists of one processor element based on the POWER architecture (PPE - POWER Processor Element) and eight synergistic processor parts (SPE - Synergistic Processor Element).

The console uses an RSX graphic microprocessor or a “Reality Synthesizer” made by NVidia and SCEI. The video chip runs at 550 MHz and has 256 MB of memory, which allows you to display two high-quality HDTV streams along with it.

PS3 has 256 MB XDR DRAM RAM manufactured by Rambus.

The main optical media for PlayStation games 3 is Blu-ray, but the set-top box drive also allows you to play regular DVDs and CDs.

Network and wireless technologies are provided by Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g), Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.0 standards. On the body of the set-top box there are four USB 2.0 ports for connecting external devices.
