The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station on the Yenisei River is
the largest hydroelectric power station in Russia and one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in the world. She
located on the border of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia. Construction of hydroelectric power station
started in 1968, the first hydraulic unit was launched in 1978,
the last one was in 1985. The power plant was in constant operation
adopted in 2000.

Sayano-Shushenskaya
hydroelectric power plant gives 6400
MW of its capacity. By
statistical data, according to
average station for
year produces 24.5 billion kW/h. My
The hydroelectric power station reached its peak production in
2006, taking into account the increase
water level in the summer months,
26.8 billion were produced
kW/h

Late summer 2009
(17.08) at the station
an accident occurred.

The cause of the accident at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station was inadequate quality
operation of the second hydraulic unit, due to which the entire turbine hall was flooded.
As a result, the seventh and ninth hydraulic units failed due to strong
damage. After which their debris destroyed hydraulic units from three to five,
and all this destroyed the engineering hall from which it was controlled
hydroelectric power station. As a result of the man-made disaster, 75 people died.

"Rus Hydro". The size of her loss reached
one and a half million rubles per month.
Rus Hydro lost 7%

several billion rubles.
ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF A HYDROPEL ACCIDENT:
damage to biological reserves
decrease in fish breeding quality
low self-cleaning ability
reduction in aesthetic benefit
terrain
There is information that after the accident in
Yenisei hit up to 40 tons of transformer
oil that destroyed about 400 tons
trout.

The reconstruction of the station lasted from
2010 to 2014.
In 2013, employees were able to
implement the launch
additional water
units numbered ten,
six and five that allowed
station boost energy to 4480
MW. Already in 2013, hydroelectric power station
produced 24 billion kWh.
During the entire period of reconstruction
produced after the disaster
complete refurbishment of the new
equipment from the manufacturer
"Power machines". Managed
extend the life of machines to
forty years old. For now
Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP in its entirety
is in good working order and works perfectly.

Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP -

the largest power plant in Russia in terms of installed capacity,

8th among currently operating hydroelectric power plants in the world. It is located on the Yenisei River, on the border between the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia, near the village of Cheryomushki, near Sayanogorsk. It is the upper stage of the Yenisei cascade of hydroelectric power stations.

*The highest dam in Russia - 242 m high

*one of the highest dams in the world

* The name of the station comes from the names of the Sayan Mountains and the village of Shushenskoye located not far from the station

Western Sayan, Ergaki ridge

Natural conditions

The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station uses the fall of the upper Yenisei in the so-called Sayan corridor - a section of the flow where the river cuts through the ridges of the Western Sayans. The Sayan corridor has a length of about 280 km, starting at the confluence of the Khemchik River with the Yenisei and ending in the Sayanogorsk region. Within the Sayan corridor, the Yenisei flows in a narrow gorge; the river bed consists almost entirely of rapids and rifts.

Station design

The Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP is a powerful high-pressure dam-type hydroelectric power station. Structurally, hydroelectric power station structures are divided into a dam, a hydroelectric power station building with auxiliary buildings, a water well for the operational spillway, a coastal spillway, and an open switchgear.

Operational spillway

The operational spillway is designed to discharge excess water inflow during high water and floods, which cannot be passed through the hydraulic units of a hydroelectric power station or accumulated in a reservoir.

Operational spillway of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP in action (2010)

Coastal spillway

The coastal spillway is located on the right bank and is designed to pass floods of rare occurrence. Structurally, the spillway consists of a water intake structure, two free-flow tunnels, a five-stage drop and an outlet channel. The water intake structure is designed to collect water into the spillway.

Reservoir

When creating the reservoir, 35,600 hectares (according to other sources - 18,300 hectares) of farmland were flooded and 2,717 buildings were moved. The water of the reservoir is of high quality, which made it possible to organize fish farms specializing in trout cultivation in the downstream of the hydroelectric power station. The reservoir is located in Tuva, Khakassia and the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

At 8:13 local time on August 17, 2009, a serious accident (man-made disaster) occurred at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station. Hydraulic unit No. 2, which was in operation, suddenly collapsed and was thrown out of its place by the pressure of water. Water began to flow into the station's turbine room under high pressure, flooding the turbine room and the technical rooms below it. At the time of the accident, the power of the station was 4100 MW, there were 9 hydraulic units in operation, the automatic protections on most of which did not work. The power supply for the station's own needs was lost, as a result of which the emergency repair valves at the water intakes (in order to stop the flow of water) had to be reset by the station personnel manually.

Restoration and reconstruction of the station

Emergency rescue work at the station was generally completed by August 23, 2009, after which work began to restore the station. The removal of the rubble in the turbine room was completed by October 7, 2009. The restoration of the walls and roof of the turbine hall was completed on November 6, 2009. At the same time, work was carried out to dismantle the damaged hydraulic units and restore building structures; the most damaged hydraulic unit No. 2 was finally dismantled in April 2010.
