How to sow the perfect lawn
- To prepare the soil, loosen it with a rake, breaking up any lumps.
- Then spread a thin layer of humus (1 cm) over the surface and sprinkle sand mixed with peat (2 cm) on top.
- Nutritious soil is not needed, since you have already laid a layer of humus under the future lawn. But for greater effect, you can sprinkle the prepared area with starting lawn fertilizer in granules.
- After this, compact the soil. You don’t need a special roller or even a large barrel for this. Two small sheets of plywood or any material that you can stand on is enough. Place one sheet, stand on it, place the second one next to it, and move onto it. And so on until the entire area is level.
- Now you need to water the soil well and you can sow the seeds. They must be dry. When purchasing, pay attention to the packaging date on the box. It is advisable that it was no more than two years ago.
- Try to sow evenly in all directions. The denser you sow, the denser the turf will be and the more resilient the lawn will be.
- Covering the seeds with soil. A layer of 1 cm is enough. Water with fine sprinkling so as not to wash away the soil.
Advice! If there is neither peat nor sand, buy a construction sieve. Choose a place in the garden with dry soil and sift it through a sieve. It will make an excellent backfill.
If it is cool at night or an invasion of birds is expected, you can cover the crops with film. Under the film it is 5-7 degrees warmer, the seeds will sprout faster. And the moisture necessary for the seeds to hatch will be better preserved in the shelter.
Advice! Ants from one anthill can take half of your freshly sown lawn to themselves in a couple of hours. To prevent this from happening, you should take care in advance to neutralize ants, as well as slugs, which will happily eat young grass.
