Now the container needs to be cut in half. To do this, measure the circumference of the barrel and divide the result by four. You can use any cork as a guide; measure in each direction according to the calculated length. Then measure a straight line between the points. This will be the middle of the container. We do the same on the other side and draw a clear line along the container.


We put on safety glasses and, using a small grinder, saw the metal container in half along the marked lines. Don't forget to follow safety precautions.


We will frame half of the barrel using corners. To do this, measure the length of the short side of the container, add 1 cm to it and mark a line on the L-shaped profile. Cut at an angle of 45°C. We prepare two such segments.


We cut two pieces of 25X25 mm profile, the same length as the corners. We apply them to end sides, and clamp the prepared corners on top. Now we apply the corner to the long side of the barrel, mark a line and cut at an angle of 45°C.


We assemble the structure from the prepared corners upside down. All angles must be right. Then we grab it by welding.


At the next stage, we try on the trimmed barrel to the welded contour. If one edge does not stand up immediately, you can apply a little pressure with your hands. We insert a square profile from the sides. After such a check, we perform complete welding of the frame.


Now we need to prepare the stops from profile pipe 25X25 mm. You can adjust the length yourself, but it is recommended to make it about 30 cm. On one side, cut the profile at an angle of 15°C.


When four stops are ready, mark 17 cm on each side. Insert the stops into the frame at a cut angle of 15°C. We catch the plane and outline the legs with a marker. Along the marked line, cut out the edging until the barrel stops.


Then we insert the supports into the grill, securely weld all the cuts, and also weld the structure to the frame.


To make the legs we will use a 20X20 mm profile pipe. The length of the four segments should be 90-95 cm. Then we insert them into the welded supports.


From the short sides iron barrel We mark the internal length and cut off the steel strip and weld it. Mark a piece of corner along the long side and cut it with a grinder. Using this profile, you can adjust the distance depending on the size of the skewer.


We install a grinding disc on the grinder and clean out all the irregularities and welds. The design should be neat and even.

From any steel profile, which comes to hand, we weld a frame in the form of a parallelepiped (the same cube, only elongated). The profile should not bend, but also not be bulky. Its size is arbitrary - from 15x15 mm to 60x60 mm. It would be appropriate to use a pipe of the same size.

Our frame should be several centimeters longer than the height of the barrel. Width - less than the diameter of the barrel by the same few centimeters or coincide with the last size. We determine the height of the frame according to our height so that later it will be convenient to use the barbecue. The support can take the form of two rigidly fastened racks, welded with half rings, into which the frame of the barbecue will be laid.

With cutout

Let's install the original container into the welded support structure, laying it on its side. Let's mark the lid to be cut out on the side of the barrel located in front of us. The width of the lid should be less than half the circumference of the barrel. The length on one side must be at a distance of at least 3 cm from the end of the container, and on the other - at least 25 cm in order to be able to equip this side of the grill with a chimney.

We cut out the lid with a grinder, but not all the way. When a cut is made along the line on which the hinges will be installed, they must be welded. This will avoid distortions and inaccuracies in the installation of the cover. Only after installing the hinges do we completely cut out the lid of our grill. It's already functional. You just need to make stops on the body, weld any inside along the closing line metallic profile so that the lid does not fall through. WITH outside lids, between the hinges, it is necessary to weld a stop so that fixation in the open position is convenient. Usually the angle is 100–120 °C.

Having a barrel and some basic skills, you can make a comfortable barbecue yourself

Now let's weld the handle to the lid. We will make it ourselves from a rod or take a ready-made one from unnecessary equipment. We will weld a thin profile to the inside of the body along the side surfaces. We will use it to support skewers and grates when preparing a barbecue.

After cutting out the cover, it is necessary to clean the inner surface of rust and dirt. To do this, take a drill with a special cylindrical brush and go through the entire internal cavity. After this, to remove the old layer of paint, we will burn the container.

We weld the body of our barbecue to the support, if it has one permanent place dislocations. In the case when a mobile unit is needed, we will weld the brackets to the container and drill holes in the support so that they can be bolted together. This is necessary for the stability of the structure. To create traction, we drill holes or make longitudinal cuts in the lower part of the body. Holes with a diameter of 10–18 mm will allow our case to maintain rigidity. And longitudinal cuts can weaken it. The slots are relevant when installing cast iron grates at the bottom of the unit.

Let's start building the chimney. We do it on the side where we left more than 25 cm from the end of the container. Metal pipe We weld a chimney with a diameter of 70–150 mm to the barbecue body. We place the welding place in the upper part of the grill. If you cut a small piece of pipe at an angle of 45° and weld the rotary elbow of the chimney, then the welding point is made at the end of the container.   2. Leave 2-5 cm on each edge.
  3. The edges of the cuts are cleaned and irregularities are smoothed out.
  4. After the work has been completed, the dimensions and configuration of the corner for finishing the cutout are determined.

Step-by-step instructions for making different barbecues

At each stage of work, utmost attention is required, since any deviation or distortion can affect the stability of the structure. All preliminary workpieces are installed on a convenient surface, and then fastened by welding at a right angle.

How to make a grill with a cutout

After the barrel is cut, a chimney is made. For this purpose they use steel pipes with a diameter of 70 mm at an angle of 45°. Connect both sections of the pipe in the form of an elbow. The joint is carefully welded to eliminate the possibility of gaps.

The inside of the grill barrel is finally cleaned. For this purpose they are used special means for cleaning microwave oven, especially if the walls inside were full liquid oil.

Since the size of the barbecue stand depends on personal preferences and the size of the barrel, you will have to make it yourself. It is made from a profile pipe with rectangular cross-section. The frame is made folding and consists of two rectangles.

The size of the pipes should be comparable to the volume of the barrel (for example, for a 100 l container - 20x30 mm, and for 200 l - 30x50 mm, respectively). Frames are welded from pipes, one of which is slightly larger, and the second is smaller (fits inside the first). The frames are secured with a bolt in the center (the bolt is used as a hinge). A washer is placed between the frames to create a gap.

Then a piece of the barrel is installed, which will serve as a lid on the main part, and with a marker, the places where the door hinges will be attached are marked. Next, using bolts and nuts, the hinges are attached first to the lid and then to the main part of the grill. To prevent the lid from falling inward during use, a steel strip is welded to it on the sides.

Then a voluminous door handle is attached to the barbecue from a barrel, or it can be welded from a profile pipe, as in the photo.

To hold the grate, several steel wires (8-10 mm in diameter) are installed across the entire barrel. On both sides of the bottom row, the wire should protrude 8 cm from the end of the barrel wall. By welding a piece of similar wire between them, you can get handles for installing or moving the barbecue.

The upper part of the side wall of the barrel is cut round hole for installing a chimney. Holes are made at the bottom of the cylinder for ventilation. Smaller holes are drilled in the middle of the grill for drainage. If you want to install a temperature regulator, you will need another hole in the lid for mounting.
