But I had to “cut through the door” - and since then it has become so customary for me that, it turns out, you can introduce new things into the free market and become a pioneer in many ways. And later I began to call myself a pioneer in Kazakh business.
My first collection was very maximalist. I tried to include everything possible: ideas, variety of shapes and materials...
- Where did you learn your craft?
- At the Faculty of Art and Graphics. In general, either you have talent or you don’t. After all, everyone can study now, but only a few create true masterpieces. It must be innate.
- What personal qualities are needed for a fashion designer?
- Of course, a designer needs an understanding of what he does and an excellent sense of style. It is also very important to have such a quality as determination.
I had to have my own “story” in life - and I began to create it. At that moment, I simply made a loud collection - and went on stage with our famous surname at a major event.
At that time, people didn’t know how to perceive me: to applaud or not to applaud, whether it was true that this was my collection or not... The result was distrust, rejection of the fact that these were my sketches and my merits. And so - 7 long years.
I went to the most decisive action to create a name that will stir the public. At the same time, the most difficult thing was to get out of my father’s shadow. Now there is just my name and merits, which were earned through my own efforts!

- Tell us about your team, about the people who work with you.
- I have a large staff, each person is irreplaceable and unique in their own way. This is a whole world in the world - Kuralai Fashion House. We also have a PR service and a representative in Moscow.
- How is your working day?
- The day is planned literally minute by minute. Unfortunately, I very rarely can be at home with my children and devote enough time to each of them.
I set aside two hours a day exclusively for myself: in the morning it takes an hour to get ready for work and for a short interview, and I spend another hour in the evening after work, when I can relax, change into comfortable, comfortable clothes and take time for myself.

I can’t imagine my outfit without expressive shoes!

The domestic fashion industry is still developing, but I always saw a huge future in it, I believed in it, otherwise I would never have been involved in fashion.
Which celebrity (from actors to politicians) would you like to create an outfit or accessory for?
I have plans to dress Hollywood stars, but I don’t name a specific star.
Are there more young people or mature women among your clients? Who are your clothes designed for?
Our products are designed for people of different ages and economic levels of life. The clients of my collections are people from different segments. We specially created the “Aruay” brand for young girls; women who love good and high-quality clothes can find them in the lines of the Kuralai brand.
What materials inspire you? What combination of fabrics, in your opinion, can truly be called luxurious?
The other day, all of Kazakhstan was discussing the lawsuit between the famous fashion designer Kuralai Nurkadilova and the bank that put up for auction the house where she has lived with her family for 10 years. And while ordinary citizens, supporting Kuralai, said: “What a horror! What will happen now?”, the founder of the KURALAI Fashion House herself boldly answered: “Well, let them take it!” Moreover, on the evening of the day when this news spread across the country, the couturier and businesswoman posted happy photos on Facebook in which she and her loved one were walking at a friends wedding.
Well, first of all, my house hasn’t been taken away from me yet. And secondly, I myself offered them to take this house even earlier. I'll explain why. For five or six years I regularly paid everything according to the agreement originally concluded with the bank. Then, in order to reduce the principal amount of the debt and reduce the monthly payment, I, by agreement with the manager, deposited a large amount of money with them. Then they had some upheavals and relocations at the bank, my manager was not identified for six months, they asked me to wait. I tried to find out on what schedule I should continue to pay, and then it turned out that my large sums lost in the printout. I paid more than 13 million tenge, the receipts were saved, thank God. And so I take a printout of payments with all the seals of the bank and with the signatures of the managers and find that in the tenth year, when I made large amounts, are zeros. Moreover, they calculated me an incredible amount of debt. This is where our argument began, in which the truth was on my side. I didn't just win the case against them... Supreme Court- they could not answer where my large payments went. And in general, they could not intelligibly answer a single question. Documents about independent examination They lost it during the trial, one of our seven contracts also disappeared.
- If you won the Supreme Court, why did a new conflict arise?
- They should have revised my amount. And I agreed with her in the second round of the dispute, already in the district court. This was the real balance - 106 million. It turned out to be the same as the current valuation of the house - its starting price is 109 million. And I said: “Take the house. Please. And I’m free like a bird in flight!”
- Isn’t it a pity to give away the house or do you no longer want to live in it?
- Of course, we are currently negotiating this matter. I don't refuse to continue paying. If the bank gives me good conditions ransom, then I will buy it back. By the way, the hype about my house being taken away was to my advantage. Because I have my own interests in this conflict, I still have many rabbits in my hat, which I will not talk about yet. And the bank will categorically not put anything up for auction - they also have their own interest. And, by the way, I learned that the house was up for auction from the press, like any other person, although I should have been notified about it personally... But in general - well, a house and a house! One house, a second house - it doesn't matter to me. Any person who has a head and who is not afraid of work will earn his living new house. This is a situation that is not worth a damn.
- Well, thank God everything is fine. Because the people were scared for you!
- I am very pleased that people worried about me and supported me so much. This is an indicator that I have always remained human, worked honestly and developed a good attitude towards myself. After this story, no one wrote to me. Complete strangers supported me on social networks, simple people! And I also raised a lot important topic in society - created a precedent when a creditor wins against a bank in the Supreme Court. Of course, if a person took money, he must pay - he cannot refuse obligations, but if the bank somewhere overcharges something, then this must be challenged! By the way, after that incident, people who also had various disputes with banks contacted me, and I, together with my lawyer, helped them. And now I’m joking about my house: since there’s such a fuss around it and since it’s become so popular, then maybe its price will now jump and someone will buy Kuralai Nurkadilova’s house for 209 million, not 109! (Laughs.)
- In addition to helping people in disputes with banks, you now also help them as a psychologist and even as a psychotherapist. Two months ago, the day after the “terrible” Monday for Almaty, you addressed the people of Kazakhstan through social networks and gave advice and recommendations on how to behave for people who had been subjected to a terrorist attack. When did you discover another facet of yourself?
- I started studying psychology from the time when I was not yet twenty years old. And I did this in parallel with fashion. And this is no coincidence, I had certain life situations that forced me to turn to books on psychology. I needed to move forward in life and business. I had to understand people, because as a person with a certain surname, people were drawn to me and needed more from me than just human communication.
- Well, you did it for yourself. And now you're spending big psychological trainings Based on success, based on personal happiness, you accept people for consultations. When did psychology become your profession?
- I learned from both Russians and Americans. I have three diplomas - from the International Academy for the Study of Lies, from the NLP Institute and from the Spanish Institute of Navarra in family relations and personal happiness. As a specialist, I can identify the problem, make a diagnosis and prescribe treatment. I learned to read a person from words, from details, from behavior. Now I even work with cancer patients and suicidal cases.
- There is an opinion that you switched to psychology because your “fashion” business stalled...
- Vice versa. I don't have a crisis. Now I have large orders, we have increased the number of collections produced, and a new wave of popularity has begun. I constantly complicate my designs. Today it is already difficult for many in our country to keep up with me in design. I see that there are still few designers of the same level as me in Kazakhstan today. Yes, I had my ups and downs. There were moments when someone expected that Kuralai would no longer be the same Kuralai. But I won’t be me if this happens at all. I even love the state when people expect that everything will be bad for me, because it is at that moment that I prepare for my “panther jump”. This is probably what happened in the current situation with my house.
- By the way, how did your children perceive this situation? Are they also ready to part with just as easily, say, their favorite rooms, a cozy garden?..
- They're looking at mom. On my emotional condition. Son Nurzaman is already 23 years old. He studied in China, knows Chinese and English perfectly, but is still looking for a profession; essentially, he is a businessman. Our middle daughter Aru is 17 years old, she has excellent mathematical and writing abilities, and she will be a financier in our family business. The youngest Ayim is 12 years old, and she immediately said that she would continue the family business in terms of creativity. She creates collections with me and is passionate about it. The children are already big and see that I do everything right. I have everything under control, without panic, done thoughtfully and step by step. I’m not scared, because I started from scratch and achieved everything myself. I have a job I love, experience, true friends who always support me. And now I also have serious support from my loved one. Well, isn't this happiness? What more does a person need? You know, I have had such ups and downs in my life! A lot of people don't know what I went through!
- Through what?
- For a long time I was without an apartment, without a house. My children and I moved from one rented apartment to another, these were completely different apartments: it was the first floor after the cats, there were scary bathrooms, strange beds, unglazed balconies on the upper floors, when Small child may fall.
- Was this before you became a famous designer?
- No, I was already very famous. And it was inconvenient for me to go and rent such apartments myself; my assistants did this. Only later, when the owners came to collect the rent, were they surprised that Kuralai Nurkadilova lived here. Sometimes it happened that the apartment was urgently sold, and I simply put all the utensils in a blanket, tied it in a knot, threw it in the car and left for another apartment. It was only with my third child that I got my own home. I only took out my first mortgage when my youngest daughter was born. She was born premature, heavy, and needed conditions. - Yes, it was like something out of science fiction. For some it will be a shock. But someday I’ll tell you about it... I had a very difficult period in my life. Everything was there! This includes poor health, the birth of children, the formation of a business, and my desire to prove that I belong in the right place. This difficult period lasted a very long time - more than fifteen years. But it’s been ten years since I live completely differently. I'm calm and happy. Moreover, now I am not alone!

Until 2006, the designer was expanding her own network of branded ready-to-wear boutiques, which are now represented in various Kazakh cities, and Kuralai, as a representative from the Republic of Kazakhstan, did not lose sight of world seasonal fashion shows and organizing presentations of her collections.
2006 was also one of the decisive years in the career of Kuralai Nurkadilova: new departments of the KURALAI House were opened, such as an interior design studio and dry cleaning. And a new direction appears - the “Kuralai home” line, that is, the High Fashion House is given the status of a company.
The following year, Kuralai Nurkadilova took over the post of executive director of the National Chamber of Fashion of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In parallel with this, she was awarded the “Designer of the Year” award according to the magazine “Harper`s Bazaar Kazakhstan”.
Kuralay Nurkadilova is a recognized professional in her field. More than once the collections of the company “KURALAI” had the opportunity to attend joint fashion shows of such world-famous famous brands like Valentino, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, fashion houses Versace, Ferre and Escada. In 2006, a collection of haute couture clothing made a splash on the catwalk, which was attended by more than five thousand visitors to the Cannes Palais des Festivals. And among the famous clients of the House of High Fashion “KURALAI” are titled and crowned persons, for example, the princess of Saudi Arabia and representatives of the elite of post-Soviet countries.
