How to attach fabric to the ceiling. DIY fabric ceiling. Design features of fabric ceilings

Europe became acquainted with stretch ceilings in the second half of the twentieth century.

In the late 90s, similar technology came to the taste of countries former USSR. Since then, suspended ceilings have confirmed their status every year better design ceiling space.

Selection of suspended ceilings

Popularity suspended ceilings among consumers due to the numerous advantages of the product, among which are:

However, when talking about stretch ceilings, you should not rely only on positive characteristics.

Of course, there are also disadvantages, which we will talk about:

  • high price, compared to other types of ceilings;
  • The construction of suspended ceilings is not strong - they are afraid of damage sharp objects And chemicals;
  • installation individual species suspended ceilings are complex and require special skills. It is also worth mentioning here about bulky or scarce equipment;
  • not all types of suspended ceilings are suitable for unheated rooms.

Attention: Installation difficulties and fear of temperature changes apply only to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) ceilings. Quite often you can come across judgments that they begin to sag some time after installation. With the right choice of material for ceilings, as well as following installation technologies, such problems are unlikely to bother the home owner.

Do-it-yourself fabric ceiling and its advantages

There are two types of suspended ceilings - PVC ceilings and fabric (seamless) ceilings. Comparing the installation of similar structures, it should be noted that PVC installation ceilings are distinguished by their complexity. Do-it-yourself fabric ceilings are a relatively easy task. Such structures occupy about a third of the construction market for suspended ceilings. Of course, this is not accidental.

Let's talk about the benefits fabric ceilings:

Ceiling installation: materials and tools

  • construction stapler;
  • drill or hammer drill - based on the wall material;
  • drills (full set);
  • spatula for fabric ceilings (fins);
  • construction knife;
  • scissors;
  • levels – laser or water.

Materials required for installation:

  1. calico – quantity, not less than the size of the room + 20 cm (additionally) on each side;
  2. wooden blocks or glazing beads - their dimensions are 40x50 or 50x50 mm. The amount of material must match the perimeter of the room;
  3. anchors - the same number as wooden blocks. The size and type of anchors are related to the thickness and strength of the material from which the walls are made;
  4. assembly adhesive ( best option buy a shoemaker);
  5. tracing paper;
  6. glue for tracing paper;
  7. PVA glue);
  8. primer for calico;
  9. dyeing agent for coloring calico - recommended to use acrylic paint or water emulsion;
  10. plinth for the ceiling (baguette) – the quantity must match the perimeter of the room to hide the ceiling attachment points.

Attention: The article does not there is talk about availability sewing machine and a set of tools necessary for making the canvas. This is the task of the cutter, seamstress-motor operator and ironer. All you have to do is contact the specialized workshops, which will promptly and reasonable price will do all the work for you.

Stage 1. Marking the ceiling

A very responsible and important stage of the entire scale of work. Correct marking will completely affect the quality and correctness of installation ceiling structure. The first mark is fixed at a height of 5 cm from the ceiling, and then it is projected onto all the walls of the room. Based on the marking results, all walls of the room should have parts of a horizontal line.

Tip: The first mark will help eliminate unevenness and slopes of the ceiling and walls in the room. A special level must be used to designate it.

Stage 2. Install bars around the perimeter of the room

Installing glazing beads: drill a hole in the wall for the anchors. First of all, the glazing beads are numbered and given their serial number for installation. Next, a hole must be drilled in all the bars for attaching the anchor. Attach all the bars in order to the line marked on the wall. Then, based on drilled holes, project the marks onto the wall. This technique will help match the holes on the bars and walls. Install the selected type of anchors, and then fix the glazing beads on them.

Helpful information: You may be faced with the option of attaching glazing beads to a special profile for suspended ceilings. It should be remembered that in this case the glazing beads are fastened not end-to-end, but every 10 cm.

Stage 3. The process of securing the canvas

The stage requires at least two people. The need is due to securing the canvas without distortions. Installation work will not do without the use of a construction stapler and assembly adhesive. The glazing bead is covered with a layer of glue, after which a canvas is applied to it and pressed with a flipper at the corner where the bar meets the wall. Next, pull the blade by the free part, while holding the fin. As a result, the panel will stretch and it will be possible to fix it with a stapler. First of all, the canvas is fixed on the longest wall of the room (from the middle to the edges). Next, you can move to the opposite wall. Make sure that dropped ceilings the fabric ones had no folds. Finally, the canvas is fixed on a narrow part of the room according to a similar principle: from the middle to the edges. If there are any excess edges of the attached fabric, just cut them off.

Stage 4. Tracing paper

Tracing paper hides the connecting seams of the calico fabric. In the absence of such measures, the paint will not be applied evenly, but will hang out in bubbles. Ultimately, all the work will go down the drain, because the room will lose its aesthetic appeal. This stage of work is responsible and requires careful and thoughtful actions.

First of all, prepare special glue. Recipe: cook a paste (based on flour) and add PVA glue to it (30% of the mass of the paste). Next, the mass is diluted with water until thick and filtered. Applying glue - simultaneously on the canvas and on the tracing paper. It is best to bend the edges of the tracing paper and the overlaps - this will prevent them from sticking to each other. After the glue has dried, tear off the folded edges of the tracing paper. Moreover, in places where it is torn off, the tracing paper should become as thin as possible - as a result of which the seams will become invisible. Some experts recommend treating the seams sandpaper and PVA glue.

Stage 5. DIY fabric ceilings: chic and beauty

After waiting for the PVA glue to dry, we begin to prime the entire surface. After two hours, you can fix the baguette. After this, the ceiling is painted with 3 layers of paint.

Draping the ceiling with fabric has a history that goes back centuries. At the turn of the century ancient Egypt, Greece, China and Rome used the material to decorate coverings and walls. Silk and tapestry fabrics were stretched under the very surface and the same panels were installed on the walls.

The Muslim rulers of India from the great Mughal dynasty Akbar, Jahangir, Aurangzeb and Shah Jagan decorated their magnificent palaces with fabric hanging from the ceiling with soft coattails. And in Armenia of the 27th century it was impregnated with chalk mortar and strengthened under the coating. After drying, it stretched and a perfectly flat surface was obtained.

But this method of decorating the surface with material required a lot of expense, time and effort. Gradually they began to use materials that did not require such work, and tension fabrics were gradually forgotten. Only in the 60s of the last century did the French decide to restore lost technologies, but using new materials and devices.

IN modern houses where the height of the walls leaves much to be desired, use fabric decor is an excellent way out of the situation. A correctly draped ceiling creates the impression of a high dome above your head, and a well-chosen pattern will make the room brighter and more comfortable.

Fabrics for ceiling decoration

Silk, satin, velvet, velor, satin, chiffon can be listed endlessly as materials that were used previously to change the design of the ceiling with fabric. But not every material can withstand the test of time and everyday disasters.

Today, increased demands are placed on the materials used for drapery. The material should not only look beautiful, but have the following properties:

  • easy to wash;
  • do not fade;
  • be sufficiently elastic;
  • maintain its structure for many years.

Modern technologies make it possible to produce fabrics specifically for drapery. They are treated with antistatic compounds, anti-allergenic and dust-repellent. Almost any cover, both natural and synthetic, can be subjected to this treatment.

Depending on the idea of decorating the ceiling with a do-it-yourself drape, shiny and matte structures, smooth and printed, transparent and dense, plain and patterned, are used. The method of combining several types of fabrics has proven itself to be excellent. It all depends on what look you want to give the room.

Here are the characteristics of the most common types of materials for finishing the surface with fabric with your own hands:

  1. Linen. First of all, linen will look noble and beautiful. It is easily attached and does not stretch during installation, and will not sag over time. In addition, flax is easy to process, which means it is not afraid of dust or humidity.
  2. Chiffon. Light and transparent chiffon will add airiness and freshness. Chiffon does not collect dust and does not stretch. Chiffon pastel colors creates the ideal atmosphere for a bedroom or children's room.
  3. Brocade. This noble heavy material is always produced in bright and rich colors. A ceiling draped with brocade will give the living room or hall an expensive, well-groomed look.

Choice of color and pattern

It is important right choice colors and patterns when draping the ceiling with fabric with your own hands. Rich colors are more appropriate in large spacious rooms. A proper combination with the color of the walls and furniture will add coziness to the huge room. Pastel bright hues will expand narrow room, and in combination with transverse stripes they will make it visually larger.

Psychologists say that each color has its own effect on the human body, for example:

  1. Red - causes increased production of adrenaline. On the one hand, it improves mood and sharpens feelings. But on the other hand, it increases blood pressure, provokes irritability and nervousness. May cause tachycardia and respiratory rhythm disturbances.
  2. Yellow color - stimulates the central and autonomic nervous systems and has a positive effect on vision.
  3. Green color is a relaxant color recognized throughout the world. It perfectly calms, reduces blood pressure, and normalizes heart rate.
  4. All shades blue color, help maintain performance and help overcome lethargy and apathy.
  5. Purple and orange colors promote mental activity of the brain. But, unfortunately, your eyes get tired quickly.

The right color scheme in combination with the right color scheme will make any room original.

Mounting methods

The ideal option is, of course, a seamless fabric ceiling. But this is only possible if the width of the room does not exceed the width of the fabric. But for good master Disguising a seam on a woven covering will not be difficult. Usually the seam is hidden in the folds of the drape or placed away from the lighting.

The main rule is that the material is not attached along the entire perimeter, but only along the edges. The following types of design are common:

  1. Wooden or plastic slats. Depending on the purpose of the room, slats are selected. For the kitchen, bathroom and toilet it is better to take plastic. And in living rooms will look great wooden slats. After installing the slats at the required height, the canvas is attached to them using a pneumatic stapler.
  2. Plastic clips. It's more reliable way fastenings The material is moved into the clips with a special spatula and secured as with a simple stretch ceiling.
  3. Wooden frames (tablets). With this method, the canvas is pre-stretched onto a finished frame, and only then attached to the surface. Such tablets can be easily removed for washing the fabric or stretching a new one.
  4. Glue. This method is suitable for silk fabrics. Pre-prepared material is glued as regular wallpaper. Pay attention to this point, the glue is applied only to the coating, when it dries a little, a drape is applied and smoothed from the center to the edges.
  5. Velcro. This is the easiest and most comfortable way of fastening. One strip of Velcro is firmly fixed along the edges of the ceiling, and the other on the wrong side of the material. At any time you can easily and additional accessories remove the fabric for washing. And install it back.

Basic rules of drapery

Over the years of using fabric ceilings, several rules have been developed that should be followed so that the result of decorating with the material as in the photo will please you.

First of all, this is the location of the stripes of the pattern. Transverse stripes make the surface lower and increase the space of the room. A vertical pattern has the opposite effect.

On a note: Large color elements will visually expand the room, and small patterns will make it cozy.

If the color of the material is much darker than the upholstery of the walls, then the ceiling will press and seem to hang over you.

When purchasing fabric, make allowances. The footage should be at least a meter larger than the area.

Draping with fabric is an effective and simple way to give your apartment a presentable and expensive look.

A little history: a ceiling made of fabric, or where it came from

The masters of ancient Armenia worked with canvas, which decorated not only the walls of houses, but also the ceiling. At that time, the color of the walls and the “sky above” was the same, so thin cotton fabric was soaked in chalk and stretched over the frame. The result is a perfectly smooth and even surface, distinguishing rich houses.

Professionals in Egypt, Greece and Rome worked in almost the same way, using silk fabric. Monochrome was no longer valued here, but fabric with an ornament or ornate pattern was chosen. It looked practical, beautiful and unique.

That is why stretch ceilings today are often called “French ceilings”.

The Swedes claim that they were the first to discover PVC fabric for suspended ceilings to the world. This fact is unknown for certain.

    Ceiling decoration in oriental style

    Fabrics have long been widely used in interior decoration. Thanks to the variety of textures and patterns, colors and the ability to transmit light, matter allows you to bring any ideas to life.

    Draping ceiling fabric with your own hands may seem incredibly difficult at first glance. However, there is nothing impossible in this, just a good imagination and a little effort. Moreover, this is one of the few types of finishing that does not require special construction skills and tools.

    What fabrics can be used

    There are practically no restrictions. The material must be elastic, durable, not absorb moisture and not fade in light.

    Modern textile industry also produces special fabrics treated with antistatic compounds that do not collect dust or causing allergies. Natural (linen, cotton, silk, wool) or artificial materials are used.

    • The material can be shiny or matte, smooth or textured, light and airy or rich and heavy.
    • It can be plain or patterned, transparent or thick.
      The use of different types looks especially good in the interior, provided they are combined with each other.
    • Metallic fabrics, leather and tapestry are used for decoration. The latter type is very attractive for a smooth finish.

    Note. Draping ceilings with tapestry fabric can be done without a seam for a room width of up to 3 meters.

    Choice of color and pattern

    If the room is narrow and long, transverse stripes will visually correct the geometry of the space. In room small area You should not use material with a large pattern. Finishing with light materials creates a feeling of greater volume than when using dense and dark fabrics.

    How to cover with fabrics with your own hands, photo

    Different colors evoke different emotions in people, and even physiological changes in organism:

    • Red color uplifting, but can cause anxiety and irritation. It raises blood pressure, speeds up the heart rate and breathing rate.
      Its use in recreational areas is not recommended.
    • Yellow stimulates nervous system and good for the eyes.
    • Green color calms, helps reduce blood pressure, promotes relaxation and rest.
    • Blue- increases performance.
    • Purple It makes you think, but quickly tires you.

    Color combinations need to be selected especially carefully, it all depends on the purpose of the room.

    Mounting methods

    There are several methods used to install fabric on the ceiling:

    • Pasting of matter;
    • Fastening with brackets to slats;
    • Stretching on a wooden frame;
    • Use of Velcro tapes;
    • Application of special profiles.

    Glue method

    DIY ceiling covered with fabric, photo

    Before gluing the material, it is necessary to do some preparatory work:

    • Clean the surface from dust and wash it with a soda solution;
    • If the ceiling is painted, it is necessary to sand it with sandpaper to roughen it;
    • Unevenness is necessary;
    • Dark spots will need to be painted over so that they do not show through the fabric;
    • For work, special glue is used. After applying it to the ceiling, let it dry a little, then glue the canvas, leveling it from the middle to the edges.
    • The two strips are joined in the same way as when gluing wallpaper, following the pattern, which is clearly visible in the photo.

    Advice. If there are irregularities, it is better not to use a pattern with stripes, they will highlight surface imperfections. Material with a fine pattern in light colors looks good.

    Fastening to rails

    Combination different options and how to install it yourself, photo

    In this case, along the perimeter of the room, small cross-section slats (2*3 cm) are attached to the ceiling (or to the walls). The edge of the canvas is stapled to them using a stapler.

    Advice. If the width is not enough, the stripes can be sewn, adjusting the pattern. When using a tapestry, you can sew fabric matching or contrasting colors around the perimeter.

    • The staples are driven one next to the other. There will be a lot of them, it is better to use an electric stapler.
    • First, nail the canvas along one of the walls, starting from the middle and gradually moving towards the corners, stretching evenly. Then it is fixed, in a similar way, on the opposite wall.
    • On the two remaining walls, the material is nailed, starting from the middle, and stretching.
    • In order to hide the staples, tape or rope is glued to the attachment points.

    (foam or polyurethane foam).

    Using the Frame

    A wooden frame is made from slats with a cross-section of 2*3 cm. The canvas is stretched over it, and the frame itself is suspended from the ceiling. You can use decorative chains, then the height of the suspension can be adjusted. This method makes installation, repair or maintenance of the decorated element easier.

    This option is used for temporary decoration of premises when it is necessary to decorate it, for example, for a wedding.

    Use of Velcro

    The material, instead of staples, can be secured using special tapes - Velcro (used when sewing clothes). Their price is low, they are sold by the meter. One part of the tape is fixed to the base with glue, and the other is sewn to the fabric.

    The advantage of this type of fastening is that it is very easy to remove the fabric for washing or replacement, and then fasten it back.

    Profile mounting

    In this case, a special profile (baguette) is used, as for suspended ceilings. It is mounted on walls or ceilings, and the canvas is fixed in it using a special spatula.

    Some nuances of constructing fabric ceilings and caring for them

    To create “sails” or “waves,” you can hang thin tubular curtain rods from the ceiling and throw panels over them.

    If you need to secure the edge of the fabric in a circle, you can use a gymnastic hoop, a wooden hoop, or other suitable objects. A cord pre-sewn on the back of the fabric will help create interesting effects.

    Lamps can shine through a thin layer, or fall below the drapery.

    • The ceiling near the chandelier can be decorated with a “sculpted” rosette made of foam. It is easy to hide the joints of the edges of the panels in the folds.
    • To decorate the places where panels are attached, you can use lambrequins made of fabric or wood.
    • If various plastic (wooden) corners or linings are used, they can be covered with matching or contrasting fabric.
    • In rooms with high humidity It is better to use water-repellent fabrics.

    Please note: For decorative ceiling, the surface of the main one can be insulated.

    Fastening the fabric in a circle with your own hands, photo

    • Calculating the amount of material is usually done like this. When gluing fabric, the margin should be at least a meter in length.
    • If folds are used, then a coefficient of 2.5-3 is used in width. That is, for one meter of decorated surface it is necessary to calculate about 3 meters of fabric width.
    • Caring for fabric ceilings is easy. About twice a year, fabric elements must be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Use a nozzle with a soft brush and a cloth cover placed on it. The use of aerosol antistatic agents is recommended.

    If necessary (to remove stains), stain removers are used. It is advisable to first test their effect on a piece of fabric. Ceiling drapery can be removed for washing, but this has to be done infrequently.

    In the planning process home interior great importance add to textile design. This usually concerns the design window openings curtains, choice of bedding or upholstery for upholstered furniture. With successful use of the color and texture variety of materials, it is possible to decorate the ceiling covering, moreover, this is a kind of masking of repair defects or an option for successful stylization. Draping the ceiling with fabric at home is an excellent solution for people who are brave and ready to experiment.

    Which fabric do you prefer?

    To choose the right material for drapery, first let’s ask ourselves: for what purpose did we decide to settle not on a structure made of plastic or plasterboard, but on fabric ceilings? Unusual but very interesting design move.

    We immediately get rid of two main problems:

    • we hide repair defects under the ceiling fabric, uneven slabs, sloppily sealed seams;
    • We quickly turn an ordinary ceiling into an original, exclusive work of art.

    Using a thin light fabric you can create a ceiling covering in the form of identical waves

    We choose textiles taking into account the general design trend, when color, pattern, and even the weaving of threads play a role important role. We use thin fabrics in the assembly, thick ones can be stretched. The stronger the threads and the denser the weaving, the more decoration options you can use. For example, elastic, waterproof fabric can be easily stretched, but thin silk requires careful handling.

    The type of fabric for the ceiling in the apartment should be chosen in advance; you also need to take care of the availability required quantity in the shop. Please note that some types are displayed as a sample, to purchase you need to place an order, and this usually means 2-3 weeks of delivery.

    Leather, satin and crystal pendants - a beautiful example of an Art Deco ceiling

    Determine what fabric is on ceiling will do specifically for your interior:

    • durable canvas;
    • traditional herringbone or jacquard curtains;
    • noble velvet;
    • delicate silk;
    • luxurious satin;
    • eco-friendly linen.

    Greek sea style: freshness, lightness, all shades of blue

    Of course, we also take into account the place of decoration. For example, for a nursery it is better to use natural fibers, for the living room - elegant and noble cuts, and the bedroom is considered best place for experimentation, because in a purely personal relaxation corner you can safely fantasize with various types textiles

    DIY ceiling drapery

    Consider the three methods of attaching fabric below, and make sure that draping the ceiling with fabric with your own hands will require only a little skill and a great desire to change a boring environment.

    Creating a wooden frame

    First, we assemble a frame of arbitrary shape from wooden or plastic slats. It can run along the perimeter of the room, create a lattice or even two tiers. Then you should fix the fabric on the ceiling with your own hands: we fix the textiles either with a construction stapler (for a long time) or with special removable clips (for frequent changes). Using the frame, it is easy to change the overall appearance of the room by creating unique steps, a light canopy or a translucent dome in the upper part of the room.

    Photo printing technology has made fabric ceilings even more sophisticated

    Seamless coating

    This method ideal for rooms of small length and width. To decorate the ceiling with fabric, you will need one roll of material, preferably something durable that is not afraid of tension. To make the work easier, we wrap a piece of material that matches the area of the room around a long wooden rod (you can use a block). We secure the free end to the entire width of the room and slowly unwind the roll, fixing the edges of the material along the walls.

    The tension should be such that the material does not sag. In large rooms, additional fasteners will be required in the form of slats or special decorative elements.

    Options for removable ceiling drapery in wooden house: simple and harmonious

    Removable draperies on lindens

    "Lips" or "Velcro" allow draperies to be removed periodically for cleaning or washing. The installation process itself is quite simple and is suitable for decorating the ceiling with fabric with your own hands: we glue the first halves of Velcro to the slabs in several places, and sew the second halves to one or more textile fabrics. We fasten the material in one step, simply connecting the halves. We remember that textiles in this case should be as light as possible.
