How to cut a gate in a garage door. Do-it-yourself swing gates for the garage. DIY garage door gate

Most men are crazy about their car and are ready to spend a lot of time in the garage. But to build capital garage and to finish it the way you want, you need to invest a lot of money. Fortunately, you can master the intricacies of making some building elements yourself, such as garage doors.

All the nuances associated with their manufacture, installation and care will be discussed in our article.

Kinds

The following garage door options are available:

  • swing;
  • sliding;
  • lift-and-turn (folding);
  • lifting-sectional (folding);
  • recoil;
  • roller shutters (roller shutters or roller shutters).

Now we will consider in detail the design features of each type, their functioning patterns, advantages and disadvantages. We’ll also tell you what material to choose to make Garage Doors yourself (wood, galvanized iron or corrugated sheets), how to strengthen the sashes and how to paint them.

Design Features

To make reliable and high-quality gates with your own hands, you need to take into account the basic nuances of the structure of each type.

Swing

Swinging garage doors are the most common option, known since ancient times for their reliability and convenience.

The design principle is extremely simple - swing gates consist of two leaves, based on metal carcass. They can be wooden, iron, made of corrugated board. Closed with external and internal locks and bolts. For additional comfort, you can cut a gate in one of the doors.

Main advantages: cost-effectiveness, ease of manufacture, high degree ensuring security. Disadvantages: they require free space in front of the garage for full opening.

Sliding

If you connect a drive to swing gates, they can be automated and turned into sliding gates.

Lift-and-swivel (folding)

A modern, neat and compact option, more suitable for insulated garages located on the territory of guarded cooperatives. The basis of the design is a door made of galvanized steel or aluminum, which rises up and is secured parallel to the floor using a hinged lever drive, special guides and a lock.

Main advantages: space saving, ease of operation. Flaws: high price, low level protection, manufacturing complexity.

Lifting-sectional (folding)

A very convenient type of gate that provides high tightness and does not take up much space. Schematic diagram is based on the refraction of a metal leaf, consisting of horizontal sections, during the process of opening and placing it under the ceiling.

The functioning of the mechanism is carried out due to hinges connecting the segments and rollers moving along guide bars. Folding gates have good sound insulation, since each section is reinforced with a seal.

Main advantages: versatility. Disadvantages: high price, low burglary resistance.

Recoil

A relatively inexpensive, effective and easy-to-use option. The design works on the principle of a wardrobe and consists of one metal door, moving along the garage wall using a system of guides and rollers. Sliding gates can be installed both outside and inside the garage.

Main advantages: low cost, strength, durability. Disadvantages: the garage requires a wide facade.

Roller (roller shutter)

A rare type of lightweight gate. Roller shutters are best used in guarded cooperatives. Their mechanism of action resembles roller shutters and consists of aluminum plates that are assembled into a special block fixed at the top.

Main advantages: space saving, ease of operation. Disadvantages: fragility and unreliability.

Having studied the design features various types, we can conclude that the easiest way to manufacture and install swing garage doors. Their production does not require complex drawings, professional skills or the use of specialized tools.

Read below on how to do it yourself correctly.

Manufacturing

Smooth installation and easy operation of the gate directly depend on strict adherence to manufacturing technology. We present to your attention a universal step by step guide for the production of swing gates for garages.

Purchase of necessary materials and tools

For work we will need:

  1. roulette;
  2. square;
  3. level (both construction and hydraulic can be used);
  4. Bulgarian;
  5. welding machine.

During the work the following will be used:

  1. corners for assembling the mounting frame (it is better to give preference to corners made of steel 65x65 or 40x40 mm);
  2. cladding for sashes (most often wood, corrugated sheets or solid metal sheets are used);
  3. a set of external and internal locks (latches or deadbolts at your discretion);
  4. profile (for example, size 60x30 mm);
  5. hinged iron hinges for fastening doors.

Measuring the opening and creating a drawing

To make reliable and neat gates without cracks and all kinds of irregularities, you need to carefully measure the opening and then transfer the obtained data to the drawing.

Algorithm for measuring the garage opening:

  1. We measure the width. As a rule, this figure varies from 3 to 5 meters, depending on the dimensions vehicle. Ideally, the distance from the machine to the frame frame should not be less than 30 cm on both sides.
  2. We measure the height. This size is also taken taking into account the parameters of the car.

We transfer the obtained figures onto paper and indicate the materials. The drawing can be arbitrary, the main thing is its accuracy.

Mounting frame

Swing gates consist of 3 basic elements: frame frame (sheathing), doors (leaves) and hinges.

The first step is to prepare the parts and weld the sheathing, following the technological order:

  1. We take the prepared corner and cut it into several equal parts. The first half should be proportional to the width of the garage door, the second half should correspond to their height.
  2. We lay out the resulting segments on a flat surface at right angles, carefully checking the degrees with a tape measure.
  3. Now we need to weld the sheathing from the finished parts.

Frame frame

Work at this stage should be carried out with special attention, because the tightness of the gate and the ease of its operation depend on it.

The manufacture of a door frame includes the following points:

  1. We take the edge of the profile pipe and divide it into 4 pieces with a length that differs from the height of the sheathing by 20 mm, and another 4, the size of which is calculated using the formula: sheathing width/2 - 35 mm. All these calculations are made in order to ensure the ease of entry of future doors into the opening.
  2. We lay out the parts on a smooth, straight surface at 90-degree angles, checking them with a square.
  3. We weld the sections together and get a finished frame.

Sheathing

Sheathing is also one of the most important stages of work, since the appearance and functionality of the structure depends on the literacy and precision of its implementation. How to trim doors correctly?

We present to your attention a detailed guide:

  1. We take pre-purchased material. For example, a solid sheet of iron.
  2. Cut it to size. Moreover, the lining of the left sash should overlap the right sash by 2 cm.
  3. We weld the canvases to the frame, first in the center and along the edges to fix them, and then along the entire perimeter.

Installation of hinges

Before starting work, we purchased hanging iron hinges to secure the doors. Now is the time to install them.

This is done very easily:

  1. First you need to weld the lower hinge element to the frame frame, and the upper one to the outside of the sash.
  2. We strengthen the connection by applying a bent metal strip to the top of the loop and weld it to inside reinforcement liner.

Constipations and stopper

Choice and correct installation a secure lock guarantees the safety of your car. Therefore, we must approach this stage with all responsibility.

Garages are usually locked from the outside with a mortise or padlock, and from the inside with a pin lock.

Install mortise lock not difficult, but We’ll look at how to install the stopper in more detail.:

  1. First, we drive a piece of pipe into the ground - the movable part of the stopper will fit into it.
  2. We use a reinforcing pin as a moving part. It must be threaded through the hinge of the gate leaf.
  3. In order for the structure to function successfully, it is necessary to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the pipe.

Painting

Before the final installation of garage doors, the doors need to be painted in order to protect the metal from corrosion and improve the overall aesthetic qualities. After preliminary priming, the doors are applied frost-resistant paint on metal or enamel in 2-3 layers.

Insulation

At the end of the gate manufacturing process, it is necessary to perform internal insulation, otherwise at least 50 percent of the heat will escape from the room. And, you see, warm garages are much more comfortable. Foam plastic, expanded polystyrene or glass wool are usually used for insulation. Thermal insulation material It is attached to the inside of the doors and closed on top with clapboard or wooden planks.

So, we examined in detail the main stages of self-manufacturing swing garage doors. All that remains is to figure out the issues of their installation: how to raise the frame, hang the doors, secure the structure and install a drive for its automation.

Installation

Once you have completed the manufacture of all elements of the gate structure, you can begin installing them.

The installation algorithm is also quite simple:

  1. First you need to install the frame frames. They are attached to the slopes of the garage opening using long metal pins (15-20 cm).
  2. We cut off the excess pins protruding from the outside, sand them and mask them with paint so that in the future they do not interfere with closing the doors.
  3. Now you need to connect the inner and outer sheathings using iron jumper plates.
  4. All that remains is to hang the sashes on the hinges and evaluate the finished work.

For greater ease of use, swing gates can be equipped with a special drive powered by electricity - this will make them automatic. The operation scheme of such a device is based on the use of profile guides driven by an electric motor.

Folding and rising roller gates can also be installed independently if there are ready-made opening and closing mechanisms (leaves, sliding parts, slats, rollers and clamps), which are sold in hardware stores. All you need to do is fabricate the frame and assemble the structure according to the included instructions, and seal it.

For installation sliding gates You don't even need a frame. All you need to do is make it out of corrugated sheets and seal the large sash. If desired, you can cut a gate in it. Installation comes down to the arrangement of the fittings according to the instructions.

To make everything work out as best as possible, let’s take into account the opinions of professionals:

  • You shouldn’t limit yourself to reading a couple of articles with guidance on self-production garage doors. Now on the Internet there are a lot of detailed video tutorials and reviews on this topic.
  • When choosing materials for work, give preference to lighter and more modern ones. Then further operation of the finished structure will not be difficult and will not require effort.

In many garage areas, gates are made without gates to reduce the cost of garages. In practice, a gate in a garage is needed for at least several reasons:

1. In winter, after a snowfall, it is impossible to open the gate due to the snow. The gate is located above ground level and thus ensures easy opening even after snowfall.

2. Using a roller, you can seriously strengthen the gate against burglary - weld the internal bolts up and down onto the gate, thereby making it impossible to bend the corner of the gate, as is the case if your locks are on the outside.

3. If you don’t need to take your car out, you can only open the gate and thereby keep the garage from getting cold in the winter.

We increase the gate opening in height or to the sides in Samara, we increase the height of the garage. We also carry out related work: inserting locks of any complexity, painting, concreting floors, blind areas, laying wooden floors, etc. There is a generator-power station. Garage is a building that is given Special attention, especially in terms of burglary resistance. And an element such as a gate should have double strength and reliability, and of course, attractive appearance. Traditionally, garage doors are a swing structure of two leaves, hung on a frame. Making them yourself is not a problem if you have the skills to work with simple plumbing tools and a welding machine. This is what we will discuss in the article: about the options for swing gates, about the manufacturing technology and the nuances of the installation process.

Types of garage doors

In addition to the fact that swing garage doors are traditional and very reliable, they have other advantages.

  1. The cost of construction is cheaper than all other models.
  2. The swing modification can be insulated using various thermal insulation materials.
  3. Can be installed in limited space.
  4. They can open outside or inside the garage, depending on the owner’s requirements.
  5. Possibility of installing an electric motor for automatic opening.

The only big drawback is that it requires free space to open the doors of the structure. This is sometimes problematic in winter, when snow piles up in drifts in front of the garage. Therefore, you have to swing a shovel.

The disadvantage of swing gates is that you have to clear the area of snow from the area in front of them

In addition to swing gates, other types are installed in garages.

Folding

This is a sectional type of gate, the elements of which are installed vertically and connected to each other using a hinge method. The outer sections are attached, like the swing sections, to the frame with hinges. Additional fastening - along the upper or lower guide. Sections are made from different materials, often made of aluminum alloys or wood.

Design advantages:

  • unusual appearance,
  • ease of opening and closing,
  • do not occupy open state a lot of space
  • sections can be individually changed, repaired,
  • low price.

Cons: rapid wear and low protective functions.

Folding gates

Lift-and-swivel

Purely structurally, it is a solid shield that covers the entire entrance opening. To open, the gate is raised and rotated 90° so that it is at the top in the horizontal plane. For this, a system of levers, a gearbox and an electric motor are used.

Pros of the model:

  • high reliability,
  • V open form the gates do not take up any space,
  • amenable to insulation,
  • amenable to automation.
  • required high accuracy installations,
  • the gate remains in the opening, reducing its height by 20-30 cm,
  • It is not recommended to use them intensively.

Up and over gates

Lifting sectional

This is a structure of several sections located horizontally and interconnected by special hinges. Using a lifting mechanism located on the ceiling, the gate is lifted along guide profiles and positioned horizontally along the ceiling. Sections are mainly made of sandwich panels.

Pros of the model:

  • versatility in terms of opening sizes,
  • saving space when opening,
  • good resistance to deformation and mechanical loads,
  • full automation,
  • presentable appearance,
  • high heat and sound insulation qualities,
  • long-term operation.
  • high price,
  • required constant maintenance: lubrication of hinges and guides, checking electrics and automation,
  • low burglary resistance.

Up-and-over sectional doors

Rolled

These garage doors got their name from the way they open. Purely structurally, these are several strips (lamellas) assembled into one sheet, which is rolled into a roll. Therefore, in addition to the door leaf, the gate includes two guides that hold the structure in the opening, a shaft on which the slats are wound, and an electric drive.

Advantages:

  • compactness,
  • acceptable price,
  • ease of installation,
  • long term service,
  • presentable appearance,
  • possibility of automation.
  • almost zero burglary resistance,
  • it is not possible to carry out insulation, because there are always gaps between the lamellas,
  • do not work well at low temperatures.

Rolling gates

Recoil

In this design, there is one leaf, which is supported on a guide profile located on top and rests against the rail from below. The device is opened by rolling it to the side along the wall.

The advantages include:

  • functionality does not depend on snowdrifts,
  • does not take up space when opened,
  • high burglary resistance,
  • possibility of automation.
  • rapid wear of the rollers,
  • The width of the wall along which the gate is moved must be greater than the width of the leaf.

Sliding gates

Do-it-yourself swing garage door manufacturing technology

So, swing gates for a garage are two doors (usually equal in width), which are hung on a U-shaped frame using hinges. Therefore, when the task is set to produce gates of this type, several issues are resolved:

  • manufacturing of sashes,
  • making a box (frame),
  • installation of the latter,
  • installation of sashes on the frame.

Before you start making swing gates, you need to decide on their dimensions.

Sizes of garage swing doors

There are no strict size requirements. The main thing is that the car can freely enter the garage without hitting the gate. And this allows you to make any opening, the width and height of which is 30 cm larger than the dimensions of the car on each side. But this is inconvenient, especially for novice drivers.

  • height for passenger cars– 2.0-2.2 m, for minibuses – 2.5 m;
  • optimal width is 2.5-3 m, maximum – 5 m.

Standard sizes of swing gates

Preparing to make gates

Required tools:

  • welding machine and electrodes;
  • grinder with cutting and grinding disc;
  • tape measure, ruler and marker (chalk);
  • level and corner.

Required materials. The outer side of the gate is sheet metal steel sheet 3-4 mm thick or corrugated sheeting with a thickness of at least 1.2 mm. If the first material is used in the design, then the entire connection process is carried out by electric welding. If the latter, then the corrugated sheeting can be fastened to the frame using metal screws.

As a material for assembling the frame, you can use either a 63x63 mm corner or a 40x40 mm profiled pipe with a thickness of 2-3 mm. The second option is cheaper and easier to use.

Drawing of swing gates for a garage made from a profile pipe

And the last element is the hinges, which are made from a steel bar with a minimum diameter of 25 mm. There must be at least four hinges, two for each sash.

Now, as for the U-shaped box. It consists of two racks and a crossbar (crossbar). The first ones can be made from a 63x63 angle or pipe round section with a diameter of 80-100 mm, or a profiled pipe with a cross-section of at least 80x60 mm. The crossbar is made of the same materials. If construction is planned two-story garage, then it is better to use channel No. 12 as a crossbar.

Gate assembly drawing

Manufacturing of frames for sashes

The first stage is cutting eight pieces of material prepared for assembling the frames. Four of them should be equal to the height of the gate minus 1-2 cm, four to the width of the leaves, that is, half the width of the gate structure minus 2-3 cm. For example, if the total width of the gate is 3 m, then it is necessary to cut four elements 1 at a time. 48 m.

Aligning the frame on blocks in a horizontal plane

An important point is that the frames must be assembled on a horizontal plane. It is not necessary that it be a flat area; any type of stand will do, the upper ends of which are aligned in the same horizontal plane. You can use bricks or blocks for this. They are installed in the corners of a rectangle, the length of which is equal to the height of the leaf, the width is equal to the width of the gate section. Appropriately cut sections are laid on them, and then a level is checked to see if they lie horizontally. Deviations are leveled out by placing blocks of thin planks, stones or sheet metal under them.

The laid sections are fixed to each other spot welding with precise alignment of adjacent elements at 90° to each other. A construction corner is used for this. This important point, which determines the exact dimensions of the future gate structure, which will fit exactly into the frame without distortions or large gaps.

Scheme of stiffeners

Two frames have been formed, now it is necessary to increase the rigidity of the structure by installing additional elements: horizontal or vertical. If the gate is large, then both are used. Sometimes they are supplemented with oblique elements. The material used is a corner or a smaller profile pipe. For example, if the frames were assembled from a 40x40 mm pipe, then 40x20 mm can be used for reinforcement. Additional elements are evenly distributed relative to each other.

After assembling the frames, it is necessary to weld the joints on both sides and sand them to remove scale and metal stains.

The rigidity of the frame structure is determined additional elements, installed vertically and horizontally

Connection of frame and steel sheet

A rectangular section must be cut from a sheet of iron for each sash. There are certain requirements for their sizes:

  • the length of the segments should be 3-4 cm greater than the height of the gate opening;
  • One of the rectangles should be 2 cm smaller in width than the width of the frame, and the second one should be larger by the same size.

For example, if the width of the doors is 1.5 m, the height is 2.5 m, then one sheet will be 1.52x2.54 mm in size, the other 1.48x2.54 mm.

Now, in height, two sheets are placed on the frames so that their edges protrude beyond frame structure 2 cm on each side. The protrusions of the sheets will close the gap between the sashes and the frame. As for the width, on the hinge side the sheets are laid flush with profile pipe. In one leaf the leaf will protrude with opposite side by 2 cm, in the other, on the contrary, its edge will not reach the edge of the frame. This is done so that when the gate is closed, the protruding sheet closes the gap between the leaves.

Attention! The sheets are welded to the frame pointwise from the edge to the center. After that, welding is carried out in small sections within 3-4 cm in increments of 10-15 cm.

The sheet is fastened to the frame using short seams

Assembling the swing gate frame

The dimensions of the box are determined by the dimensions of the opening. In this case, half a meter is added to the length of the support posts, with which the structure will be recessed into the prepared pits, followed by concreting.

The box is assembled using the same technology as the sash frames, with installation on bricks or blocks. Box sizes according to inner contour the width is slightly larger than the total width of the sashes. The difference is 2-3 cm. In height, the difference can be significant - up to 5-6 cm. Although optimal is 3-4 cm.

Box for swing gates

Installation of hinges

To do this, the sashes are laid on a U-shaped frame with an exact location in the plane, forming gaps between all elements. The assembled hinges are placed at their required location and welded: their lower parts to the frame posts, their upper parts to the frame of the sashes.

To strengthen the fasteners, you can additionally weld metal strips or reinforcement to the hinges.

Correct and high-quality loop welding

Installation of swing gates

Ideally, the gate frame should be installed during the construction of the garage, when half of the walls are already raised from bricks or blocks. But regardless of this, installation is carried out using the same technology.

  1. Holes are dug for the racks with a depth of 0.5 m.
  2. One or two crossbars made of reinforcement or a corner 10-20 cm long are welded to the lower edges of the racks, the purpose of which is to serve as holding elements in the concrete.

Preparing the stand before concreting the pit

  1. At the bottom of the supports, metal plates are welded in the form of a nickel to rest on the ground.
  2. The half-meter ends of the racks are treated with a waterproofing compound, for example, hot bitumen or covered with roofing felt.
  3. The box is installed in the pits with precise alignment in the opening, for which a building level is used.
  4. The racks are welded to the embedded parts, which are installed during the wall laying process. Reinforcement with a diameter of 12-16 mm and a length of 50 cm is often used as mortgages. The laying step is every 6-8 rows.
  5. Concrete is mixed at the rate of cement-sand-crushed stone in the ratio 1:2:2, if the cement grade is M400.
  6. Pouring concrete into pits with a tamper. This is done not only to compact concrete mortar, but also in order to squeeze out the air that got there during the kneading process. Air pores reduce the strength of concrete.
  7. You can hang the sashes on the frame after the concrete has set and dried.

How to make a gate with a wicket?

The process of assembling swing gates with a door is exactly the same. Simply, four elements are inserted into one of the leaves to form an opening for the door. Vertical ones are installed at full height, horizontal ones between them in the form of crossbars. The doorway structure is assembled at the stage of manufacturing the frame for the sash.

Door location in gates with standard dimensions

The door itself is manufactured in exactly the same way as the gate sections, with frame assembly and installation metal sheet. The complexity of the manufacturing process of the leaf itself, in which the door is installed, lies in the fact that the doorway remains uncovered by a sheet of metal, and the remaining planes must be closed with it. All of them will not be equal to each other, so each section must be accurately measured, transferred the dimensions to the sheet and cut them out. After which, each cut piece is transferred to the frame with spot welding around the perimeter. In this case, the laid sections of sheets must be joined together additional profiles, which create rigidity of the frame structure.

Drawing of a swing garage door with a wicket

The size of the gate is selected taking into account the convenient passage through it, as well as the dimensions of the gate leaf. For example, if the leaf width is 1.5 m, then the width of the gate should not exceed 1 m. As for the height, the height of the gate and the location of the door itself relative to the lower elements of the gate frame are also taken into account. At the same time, the maximum height of the location is 40 cm. The height of the door itself is within 1.8-2.1 m.

Conclusion

Despite the apparent simplicity of the assembly process, it should be noted that the manufacture of swing garage doors requires attention from the manufacturer and the ability to accurately carry out all measurements and calculations. At the same time, one must not let go of measuring instruments. A slight deviation in shape or size may result in the doors simply not fitting into the frame. You will have to make adjustments in place, which will affect the evenness of the elements.

Detailed information about

The need for a gate in garage doors is obvious. The owners of a new building, which has poor flooring, are convinced of this; symbolic double-leaf gates with peeling paint are installed. Therefore, every new owner of such a garage takes on the task of modernizing it, making a basement, screeding, installing a canopy in front of the entrance, and arranging ventilation. Complete rework This also applies to garage doors.

In some cases, the owner orders new ones instead of old flimsy gates, and asks that a gate be made. But most owners improve the design of their inheritance with their own hands and cut a door into the gate, install reliable locks and latches, apply new paint, insulate.

Regular double-leaf gates

Advantages of a wicket

A gate in the garage will allow you to freely enter the room without the need to open the gate leaves. This saves time and makes using the garage more convenient. IN winter periods When the outside temperature is negative, the gate will protect the garage from heat evaporation. The threshold of the gate opening is made at a height of 20-30 cm from the floor, which will also facilitate access to the garage in case of snow and snowdrifts at the entrance.

An additional door will make using the garage convenient

As a rule, if there is an additional entrance to the garage door, the owners install internal locks on them, which can only be unlocked from inside the room. This eliminates the need for external padlocks, and winter time there will be no question of warming up the frozen locking mechanism.

General requirements for garage doors

After reconstruction, garage doors must meet the following requirements:

  • The box must be securely fastened in the opening. As a rule, builders hand over a building with gates that are welded to several metal mortgages. This mount must be supplemented with several anchors.
  • The hinges must withstand high loads, since after insulation and installation of an additional door, the weight of the sashes will increase.
  • Since the hinges are usually welded overlay with outside design, it is necessary to weld pins to the ends with fixation when closing in the holes in the box. This measure will prevent the doors from being opened by cutting off the hinges.

Pins in a metal door

  • Garage doors must be waterproofed with film and insulated, and flashings must be installed.
  • Outdoors, it is necessary to install clamps to hold the gate leaves in the open position. Sudden gusts of wind can cause the gate to slam and damage a car leaving the garage.

Design of a homemade clamp

  • The gate in the garage door is made so high that the owner does not have to bend down when entering and does not accidentally injure himself.
  • It is necessary to choose the location of the door so that you can enter the garage even when the car is parked close to the entrance. Thus, the traditional location of the gate opening closer to the center of the gate opening is not justified. It is better to make the gate opening closer to the hinge side of one of the sashes. With this arrangement, it will always be convenient to find the light switch on the wall at the entrance, and the passage will not be obstructed by a nearby car.

The door is located closer to the hinge side

Manufacturing technology

At first glance, cutting a door into a garage door leaf with your own hands is not easy. In fact, there is a simple way to make a gate in a gate, which can also be used when making gates from scratch.

Tools and materials

First you need to prepare workplace and tools:

  • Inverter welding machine. It is necessary to work in a mask and protective gloves. Depending on the thickness of the metal (usually 2 mm), electrodes of the appropriate diameter are purchased.

Welding machine

  • Large angle grinder for a wheel with a diameter of 150 or 180 mm, a set of cutting wheels.

Cutting wheels

  • Drill with drills.
  • Depending on what profile the horizontal or vertical stiffeners of the gate leaf are made of, it is necessary to prepare a corner or pipe with square section. These will be used to make the frame of the box and the gate frame. Considering that the existing stiffeners will be reused, the number of parts that need to be purchased is calculated. Structurally, a do-it-yourself box will consist of two long horizontal profiles, the length of which is equal to the length of the garage door leaf, and two vertical racks located between the horizontal ribs. Their height is equal to the height of the door. The sash is made from 4 pieces, the ends of which are cut at 45 degrees.

Pipe stiffeners

  • Meter metal ruler, tape measure, square, chalk.
  • Gate hinges. If the hinges are sold without mounting plates, then they will need to be cut out of sheet metal and welded to the hinges yourself.

Hinges with and without welded plates

  • Manual locksmith tool: hammer, metal brush, chisel, clamps (minimum 2 pcs.), core, large file.

You can work in the yard in front of the garage, first laying thick bars on the ground and leveling them. Having removed the desired half of the garage door, it is laid on the bars with the back side up.

Manufacturing of gates

The essence this method The advantage is that there is no need to remove the sheet metal covering from the gate leaf. The gate is mounted on the back side with your own hands, and at the end the sheathing sheet is simply cut along the perimeter of the door from the front side.

Sheet metal spot welded

  • The first step is to remove the internal stiffeners from the sash. As usual, they are spot welded to the sheathing sheet. This weld must be cut off with a grinder. Then they work with a chisel and a hammer. Usually this work does not take much time.
  • Remove rust and old paint.
  • Then you need to make a frame for the garage gate. To do this, measure two long and two short pieces of the corner along the width and height of the door. The ends of the workpieces are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. If a corner is used, the blanks are cut so that their shelf is located inside the contour of the sash. The workpieces are laid out on a flat surface in the form of a rectangle; if necessary, the corners are cut to ensure a minimum gap. The joints are grabbed pointwise, the diagonals of the rectangle are measured, and, if everything is in order, continuous welding is performed.

Assembly of the structure

  • Then the height of the door in the gate leaf is welded horizontal profile. If corners are used, they must be welded with the shelf outward relative to the gate opening.

Important! You can install vertical rather than horizontal profiles as load-bearing ones.

  • The next step is to prepare the gaskets. To do this, use either thin chips 4 mm thick or pieces of plastic. Then in in the right place Using clamps, the frame of the sash is screwed through the pads to the horizontal lintel. Now you can weld the bottom jumper, and then the two side ones.

Assembling a frame from pipes cut at right angles

  • Now the frame of the wicket door is laid with gaskets along the entire perimeter and welded to the sheathing sheet along the inner perimeter. The frame of the box is completely boiled in the same way, only along the outer contour.
  • Then you need to transfer the control marks to the front side of the gate leaf. To do this, lift it, place it in a vertical position, take a drill with a long thin drill 4 through holes are drilled through the metal and in the corners of the inner perimeter of the wicket box.
  • Receiving on the front side control points, perform markings. On the loop side, draw a line with chalk directly along the resulting holes, and add 1-1.5 cm along the other three.

Checking the positioning accuracy of parts

  • At the next stage, it is necessary to cut through the sheathing metal along the loop line; we do not touch the rest for now. The hinges need to be welded. You can put the sash back in a horizontal position, attach the hinges to the cut, use a long strip to align them and grab them. In this case, the cylinder must be located strictly in the center of the cut.

Gate from inside

  • Now all that remains is to hang the gate in place and use a grinder to cut through the remaining 3 sides according to the markings with an allowance. The gate with your own hands is ready.

Finished gate

Now you need to completely weld the hinges, install a lock (preferably a reverse deadbolt), install side pins to prevent the hinges from being cut, clean, paint and insulate the gate.
