This time, the Apple 2018 presentation did without big words and incredible numbers. We immediately started announcing new products: the Apple Watch, which has been published for a long time, and three new iPhones.
What exactly did they present?
Last year, three new iPhones were shown at once. This fall the situation has not changed. We still have three new products and a mess in our heads. But let's try to figure it out.
Or a cheaper iPhone turned into an iPhone XR. A real revolution has happened for this branch of smartphones. A huge, frameless screen, a new processor, a pumped-up battery, a portrait mode in the camera and a bunch of new colors. Just a bomb!
Until recently, the flagship acquired a successor - the iPhone XS. Same size, but more advanced smartphone for the same money.
But s jumped over everyone and turned to the iPhone XS Max. The same functions as the XS, only with a huge screen and more pleasant battery life.
And now more details. Let's go through the chronology of the presentation.
iPhone XS
Successor and star of the program. It costs a thousand dollars in the database, just like the previous ten.
Design
His main feature remained in place. The 5.8-inch screen retains the same resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels, which give a density of 458 ppi.
Of course, an OLED matrix is used. As always, the best. Contrast 1,000,000:1, brightness 625 nits, True Tone, support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, P3 profile, 3D Touch - everything that was before is in place.
It is reported that the glass front and back has now become even stronger. And coupled with surgical steel, the device received water protection according to the IP68 standard, which means immersion in water up to 2 meters and for 30 minutes. We were told right from the stage that if you dropped your smartphone in the pool, then it’s okay. Nothing will happen to the device. You can also pour juice or beer over the new product. No problem again.
By the way, it was IP67.
As expected, a new color was introduced - gold. It looks fresh, expensive and solid. Just what was required from the new color.
Under the hood
Of course, inside we have a new A12 Bionic processor, which is now created using a 7-nanometer process technology. Previously it was 10 nm. This means more efficient power consumption and increased productivity. In numbers the situation looks like this:
- 2 productive cores are 15% faster and 40% more energy efficient
- 4 regular cores show the same performance, but now consume 50% less energy
- The 4-core graphics accelerator accelerated by one and a half times
In addition, the new chipset includes an 8-core neural unit responsible for machine learning.
Another interesting number. Thanks to the 8-core neural unit, the new “stone” is capable of processing up to 5 trillion operations. A11 Bionic boasted a ceiling of 600 billion operations. In addition, the Neural Engine, thanks to the Core ML platform, is up to 9 times faster than the corresponding system in the A11 Bionic. At the same time, the neural unit consumes 10 times less energy.
Cameras
Compared to the top ten, the new smartphone has not received any changes in numbers. Modules of 12 megapixels each are installed on the back. The six-element lens boasts an aperture of f/1.8 for the regular lens and f/2.4 for the telephoto. In addition, there is dual optical stabilization.
With exactly the same numbers, Apple claims that the quality of the images has improved. Several new technologies contribute to this.
Take Smart HDR, for example, which is responsible for improved processing of light and dark areas in pictures. In addition, algorithms have learned to determine depth of field even more accurately in portrait mode. For this, the “Depth” function or variable aperture is also used: from f/1.4 to f/16 - any value. You can adjust the degree of blur both directly during the shooting process and after, in the Photo application.
Let me remind you that up to this point a variable aperture had only been found in Samsung Galaxy S9, and . Moreover, in Korean flagships, physical aperture blades are responsible for this, which either narrow or open. How things are going with the iPhone XS is still unknown. Most likely, the software is responsible for the process.
In addition, “Depth” is also available for the TrueDepth front camera.
Regarding video recording, the improvements are purely evolutionary. More detailed elaboration of dark areas, improved picture in poor lighting and finally stereo sound recording. Surprisingly, until recently, not a single iPhone could record stereo. This gap has now been closed.
Rest
Let's just list a few more new features:
- maximum memory configuration increased to 512 GB
- 4 GB RAM (no official confirmation yet)
- more spacious stereo sound
- Face ID now recognizes faces even faster. Not a word about the possibility of unlocking in a horizontal position.

But don't rush to rejoice. The first SIM card will be the familiar Nano SIM. But the second role is played by eSIM or digital SIM card.
The only country in the world where there will be two slots for two real SIM cards is China. Russia and other regions are in flight. Although, perhaps, some impudent MP will demand that Apple change the situation. If anything, I didn’t hint anything to anyone.
iPhone XS Max
Let's look at the most expensive and sophisticated device, and at the same time determine how it differs from the iPhone XS. The main difference was the huge, frameless 6.5-inch screen.
For such a diagonal, engineers had to increase the resolution to 2688 x 1242 pixels. However, in total amount they give a density of the same 458 pixels per inch.
This is where the differences between the Max version and the regular XS end. Well, except for the slightly improved battery life and price. More on the latter later.
iPhone XR
This is a smartphone, so to speak entry level. The most affordable, with the latest hardware, now with a frameless screen, Face ID, a new processor and a relatively compact body. Despite the 6.1-inch LCD panel.
A whole bunch of new colors makes you think about repeating the experience with the iPhone 5C? Bad experience. I am sure that a new approach with a bunch of colors at the start will be much more successful. By the way, the photo below shows all the available colors. There are a lot of them, they are all bright and juicy.
It’s a bit of a shame that the smartphone was equipped with an IPS screen, and not an AMOLED screen, as in its older brothers. However, current goodies, including, for example, True Tone and the P3 profile, are still announced.

Like its more sophisticated relatives, the XR received a top-end processor. And I’m betting in advance that this particular smartphone will become the most productive in the company’s history. The situation is repeated when the device received a powerful processor, but a noticeably smaller number of pixels to process them. Hence the superiority, which, however, is noticeable only in synthetic tests.
There is one camera installed at the back, but it is “completely new”:

The most important thing is that even with one camera, portrait mode is now available. Now, those who want to save money will not be left behind by modern photo technologies. This makes me happy.
The front camera can also blur the background, and like all other smartphones with daylight, studio and contour light effects. The “Depth” mode is in place.

It is also important to mention autonomy. The new product lasts an hour and a half longer than . A decent indicator.

In my own way appearance iPhone XS is not much different from its predecessor iPhone X. The front and back surfaces of the smartphone are covered with a new generation of protective tempered glass. According to Apple, the glass in the iPhone XS is the most durable ever used in a smartphone. True, crash tests have already proven that glass continued to remain glass. If the iPhone XS is dropped from arm's length onto a hard surface, the glass is likely to crack. As for collecting scratches, during the first days of using the iPhone XS without a case, no incidents occurred. There weren't even micro scratches on the case.
The glass is connected by a stainless steel frame. Note that some users complained that the frame would peel off over time. However, there were very few such reviews. And the frames of the iPhone X in our editorial office remained in perfect condition.
The shape of the iPhone XS case has not changed in principle. The body is slightly rounded at the corners, in the traditional style of Apple smartphones. Due to the minimal display frames, the body looks slightly elongated. But the dimensions of the iPhone XS are not huge because of this. They are 143.6x70.9x7.7 mm. The figure is identical to the iPhone X.
Almost the entire front surface of the iPhone XS is occupied by the display. There are minimal frames left on the sides and bottom. The top frame is much more noticeable, but is cut off on the sides. Yes, Apple has decided not to give up the “unibrow” yet. According to rumors, the company will do this in 2019.
The top end of the iPhone XS case is empty. On the right is the power button, on the left are the volume buttons and the sound mode switch. At the bottom end there are speaker grilles and a classic Lightning connector. Despite some rumors, the transition to USB-C did not take place.
The new iPhone XS is very similar to the iPhone X, but Apple still distinguished the model from its predecessor. iPhone XS will be released in three body colors (iPhone X came out in only two): silver, gray and brand new gold. The new gold color has not really been used by the company in any of the devices before. Compared to “regular” gold, the new color is much more saturated. Each color is applied to the body using a unique PVD coating method, which creates a glossy effect.
The experience of using the iPhone XS is no different from the iPhone X, of course, if you switch from one smartphone to another. The brand new iPhone XS is in your hand and no novelty is felt. And where would it come from if the design and even dimensions of the smartphones are identical. If you switch to the iPhone XS from earlier Apple smartphones, which are still made in the old design, then there will be a lot of emotions from the new product. You will also be surprised by the unusual gestures that allow you to control your smartphone without the Home button, the display on the entire front surface, and the glass back surface.
Display
iPhone XS features a full-screen 5.8-inch Super Retina HD OLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The display resolution is 1125x2436 pixels (pixel density per inch - 463 ppi). The iPhone X has a similar figure. This means that developers will not have to update their applications specifically for the iPhone XS.
The iPhone XS screen covers 81.4% of the front surface of the smartphone. Apple managed to achieve this result by reducing the frames around the perimeter of the display.
The iPhone XS display brightness is 625 cd/m² - an excellent indicator for OLED displays. The image on the smartphone will be perfectly visible outside on a bright sunny day. The screen supports Apple's proprietary True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the display temperature depending on the light level. The iPhone XS display contrast is 1,000,000:1.
Despite numerous rumors, support for 3D Touch in the smartphone has not disappeared. iPhone XS recognizes pressure on the display, like previous models starting with iPhone 6s. Let us remind you that according to rumors, Apple intends to abandon 3D Touch technology in the future.
The iPhone XS display also supports HDR10 and DolbyVision. Support for the expanded P3 color format is also here to stay - it’s what makes the iPhone XS display so bright and saturated.
Sound
Apple engineers devoted Special attention the sound of the iPhone XS. The stereo speakers of the smartphone began to sound 50% louder compared to the iPhone X. The company specifically wanted to achieve this result, since support for Dolby Vision and HDR formats will allow iPhone XS owners to enjoy movies not only with a high-quality, rich picture, but also with surround sound.

The 5.8-inch iPhone XS is powered by Apple's revolutionary A12 Bionic processor. His main feature is the technological process by which it is created. TSMC used the 7-nanometer FinFET process to create the A12 Bionic processor. For comparison, the iPhone X is powered by the A11 Bionic chip, which is made using a 10nm process technology.
iPhone XS became the first smartphone in the world equipped with a processor created using the 7nm process technology. Moreover, competitors will not soon catch up with Apple. On this moment only TSMC is capable of producing such processors - other companies have problems. Because of this, the appearance of new generation chips in Android smartphones will occur only in 2019.
The A12 Bionic includes a six-core computing processor. Four chip cores are responsible for efficiency, the remaining two for performance. When iPhone XS performs a complex task, such as running a heavy game or application, the performance cores are activated at full capacity. They are also assisted by energy efficient cores. Thanks to this, even complex tasks are completed instantly.
But if the most common everyday tasks are performed on the iPhone XS, then exclusively energy-efficient cores work. Their power is enough to very quickly launch applications, move between them, etc. without spending a lot of energy. This system allows the iPhone XS to spend significantly less resources. Up to 50% less than iPhone X.
The system on the A12 Bionic chip integrates a quad-core graphics processor, which was also developed by Apple. Its key feature is support for lossless data compression technology. It opens up completely new possibilities for both users and developers.
The third important component of the system on the A12 Bionic chip is the second generation Neural Engine machine learning module. It is capable (and constantly does so) of executing five trillion commands per second. This phenomenal performance allows the A12 Bionic processor to self-learn much faster. What this all means for the user is that iOS 12 features that use machine learning data perform better. For example, the search for photos in the Photos app begins even before a person enters a query.
What does the new A12 Bionic processor give the iPhone XS, made according to completely new technology? Productive power! iPhone XS is the fastest smartphone in history. It took over this title from its predecessor, the iPhone X, and immediately moved ahead.
iPhone XS is up to 70% faster than iPhone X thanks to a new processor. Increased productivity is evident in literally everything. iPhone XS opens apps and games faster, performs complex operations, encodes videos, and more. The difference in operating speed is visible to the naked eye. It is noteworthy that the iPhone X felt like a perfectly fast smartphone. However, Apple has clearly proven that the iPhone can be even faster.
In synthetic tests, the iPhone XS easily outperformed the previous leader, the iPhone X. In single-core testing mode, the difference was not the greatest - 4835 points versus 4320. The flagships of other companies were significantly inferior to the iPhone XS.
The front surface of the iPhone XS will be almost completely covered by a 5.8-inch OLED display with minimal frames. The top frame, like the iPhone X, will be cut off on the sides. According to some leaks, the bezels around the iPhone XS display may be reduced, but barely noticeably. On the back of the iPhone XS we will see the same dual vertical camera with flash.
The 6.5-inch iPhone XS will receive an identical design - panels made of tempered glass, a surgical steel connecting frame, a frameless full-format display with a monobrow and a dual vertical camera. However, the 6.5-inch model will surprise, quite obviously, with its size.
The 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be Apple's smartphone with the largest display ever. At the same time, the model will not turn out to be a really huge “shovel”. By reducing the display bezels, Apple will be able to squeeze a huge 6.5-inch OLED display into a body with the dimensions of a 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. This means that the dimensions of the 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be approximately 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm (most likely a little more).
The new iPhone XS will receive a design almost completely identical to the iPhone X - at most, some small details will change, which we will only learn about at the presentation. But what will Apple surprise in terms of design? There is an answer - a new color.
Apple will release the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhone XS in a completely new gold color. For clarity, we have posted the official image of the new Apple smartphones, which was accidentally leaked onto the Internet, once again. Apple has never painted any of its smartphones this color before. The difference with the usual gold color, well known to everyone from previous iPhones, is visible to the naked eye.
