How to sew a cover for an old sofa. How to sew a cover with an elastic band for a sofa with your own hands. DIY bedspread with hard armrests

We all want our upholstered furniture - a sofa or an armchair - to last as long as possible and remain beautiful and tidy. appearance. But, unfortunately, not everything turns out to be as durable as we would like. Of course, high-quality fillers and upholstery materials will be more wear-resistant, but they will also be more expensive than their budget counterparts. price categories. But there is always a way out.

For example, the simplest cover will significantly extend the life of upholstered furniture, even the most inexpensive upholstery. Moreover, some types of upholstery (in particular velor) simply need a cover (velor coverings are quite capricious, require regular cleaning, and they cannot stand stains). Therefore, there are two simple options - buy a ready-made cover or sew a cover for the sofa yourself.

To make the sofa last as long as possible, use a cover

Covers for a sofa (or other upholstered furniture) is a pretty common thing. Although not everyone thinks about buying it. After all, really, why do I need a case if I have absolutely new sofa in expensive leather upholstery and modern filling? Hide the spectacular leather upholstery It may not be worth it under a cover, but all (even the most expensive) materials have their expiration date. And, believe me, the case can become simple and affordable solution problems of your sofa if the need arises to return it to a neat appearance.

Replacing the upholstery (especially the expensive one) will be much more expensive than buying even the highest quality European cover. And changing the cover, if necessary, is much easier than restoring your favorite home sofa. But first we need to think about whether we buy a ready-made item or sew a sofa cover with our own hands.

Choosing a case

If you decide to buy ready product, then the question of how to choose a case is solved quite simply. There are now quite a lot of offers for sewing sofa covers. Sewing a cover for a sofa of any size will not be difficult for them. In addition, you can choose the material for the case yourself.

But there are also pitfalls here. Don't go to the first cover manufacturer you come across.

Performers should be selected from more or less well-known and trusted companies. The material for the cover should not be thin and cheap, because it will have to be changed much more often (unless, of course, you want to become a constant source of profit for companies specializing in sewing sofa covers).

Euro-cover on the sofa

To avoid such difficulties, just choose a Euro-cover for your sofa. Because Euro-covers are distinguished by high-quality materials, in the manufacture of which elastic threads are used, allowing the cover to stretch freely and fit tightly to a sofa or chair. But remember that a European sofa cover will cost much more than a regular cover.

Covers or sofa decks

1 2 3 4

Instead of sofa covers, a store consultant can offer you sofa decks (special bedspreads for upholstered furniture with the function of a cover). The main difference between covers and sofa decks is that sofa decks do not necessarily cover the entire surface of the sofa. But this seeming drawback will actually become a plus, because you can cover any sofa with a sofa deck. Divandeck – universal remedy, with its help you can easily change the interior of a living room or hall. Furniture covered with sofa decks becomes original designer look. They can be used to cover sofas, armchairs, and beds, and replacing them will not be a big problem.

We sew ourselves

You don’t have to buy ready-made things in the store, because you can sew a high-quality cover, sofa deck, or even a Euro cover for your favorite sofa. Sofa covers made by yourself will look no worse than the best ones. original models from manufacturers. And they will cost at least less.

To sew a sofa cover using your own hands and available tools, you need to be able to use these same hands and tools. Don’t be alarmed, making a sofa cover with your own hands is not the most difficult process. If you are at least a little familiar with a sewing machine and understand what patterns are, everything will work out. To practice, first sew a cover on sofa cushion, For example. Or a handmade sofa deck for a chair. Spend a little personal time, and your furniture will begin to be decorated with worthwhile personal items.

What you will need

So, to make a sofa cover with your own hands, you need a sewing machine (the most common one), a measuring tape, and needles and threads. And, of course, you will need material. How much money and time all this will take depends entirely on you (price of the material, amount of free time, and so on).

First you need to measure the sofa to know exactly its dimensions. After all, sofa covers are sewn to exact dimensions (although you need to take the material with a small margin) and any mistake can ruin the work. If you have standard furniture, then to sew a sofa cover you can use a ready-made pattern from our website. If your sofa or armchair is created by the hands of a furniture designer individual order, or you want to put a cover on a corner sofa, then the work will require a little more effort.

Here is a small guide that may help and make your work easier. We have already talked about measurements (but if the sofa has armrests, be sure to measure them separately). This is the first stage. For convenience, draw a diagram and indicate all the dimensions on paper - this will be very useful.

The second stage will be making patterns. They should be made with reserve (you need to take into account the seams, which will eat up several centimeters, and a couple of extra centimeters never hurt). All patterns are sewn with line seams (made in a straight line, with small stitches). Then you need to try on the cover and, for clarity, it is best to secure it with special needles or pins.

The third stage - after adjusting the sizes - we cover and sew the edges. The case is almost ready. If desired, you can attach an elastic band to the edges of the cover, which will allow it to fit the furniture more tightly.

If you are sewing a cover for a corner sofa, you can find the necessary instructions on our website. When purchasing the selected material, you need to take into account that you will need more of it (that’s why you need to measure the sofa in the assembled and then unfolded state).

The most important thing you need to stock up on before work is patience and diligence, then everything will definitely work out. After all, any step by step instructions(with video examples) can be found on this site.

First of all, you need to go to the store and choose the material. Please note that it must be dense enough and also be combined with the overall style of the room.

To be sure that after the first wash the product will not shrink in size, the cut will have to be wetted, dried and ironed.

  • To create a bold modern interior, you can use multi-colored pieces of fabric. For example, the back and armrests can be light green, and the seat can be bright orange.
  • A pattern for a sofa cover, transferred to paper, will save a lot of time when sewing a new furniture outfit.
  • If you have an animal in the house, it is better not to choose fleecy fabrics: wool will settle on them more intensively. By the way, on dark upholstery the shreds are much more noticeable.
  • To sew a cover for a corner sofa, you need to add one more detail - a second backrest. Otherwise, you need to follow the instructions above.

Covers for sofas, covers for chairs or armchairs have become very fashionable again these days. Removable covers for upholstered furniture not only keep the furniture upholstery in pure form, but also have a number of other useful advantages. For example, the ability to easily and inexpensively change the design, not only of furniture, but also of a room. Look at the photo how easily you can turn any furniture into a work of art using furniture covers. See how well you can “fit” new covers into the overall design of the room.

Sewing covers allows you to transform your old sofa into completely different furniture, covered with new fabric, also of a suitable color and quality.
Perhaps the most important advantage of covers is their low cost, compared to the cost of completely reupholstering a sofa. It is enough to buy a few meters of fabric, take out a sewing machine from the closet and select a suitable stitch and sew a sofa cover with your own hands, the main thing is to make a simple pattern correctly and accurately. But more on that below, first let’s figure out how much fabric you need to buy for the cover.

Of course, for sewing covers, be it an ordinary one-and-a-half-sleeper or a corner sofa, you need quite a bit of fabric. At least 8 meters (width 150cm) for any sofa, so it is advisable to use very inexpensive fabrics for sewing. It is important that furniture covers are easy to wash and iron, and that they are also strong enough. Therefore, covers can be sewn not only from tapestry (furniture) fabric, but also from thin, but quite dense fabric. Thick fabric will prevent snags, which is especially important if you are protecting the upholstery of your new sofa or chair from the claws of your pets.

1. Calculation of fabric for sewing a sofa cover

To sew a sofa cover you will need approximately 8 meters of fabric. But in order to more accurately calculate the consumption, you need to measure the length of the sofa and its width. A rough calculation looks like this: two lengths of the sofa + two widths. As a result, if the sofa is 160 cm wide and 200 cm long, then 7.2 meters of fabric will be required (width 150 cm). But, this is just a guide so that you can calculate in advance how much the fabric will cost approximately, and what kind of fabric you need to buy, for 2000 rubles per meter or still for 200 rubles.

It is quite difficult to accurately calculate fabric consumption without experience. You need to carefully measure all the areas and details, draw them in a reduced form on paper, and then make a layout taking into account the direction of the pattern or fabric design, the grain line. Fabrics with geometric patterns, especially stripes, will significantly increase waste since they can only be cut in a certain direction. It is best to use plain furniture fabrics, or, in extreme cases, with small patterns. In any case, to any of your calculations of fabric consumption for a sofa, add another 0.5 - 1 meter, at least. This increase will not be superfluous, and if a piece remains, it will be useful in the future for replacing worn areas. From this leftover fabric you can sew a cover for a stool or a small decorative pillow and much more. It is much more difficult when there is not enough fabric, but even in this case there is no need to be upset, since for the back of the back of the sofa you can use any other fabric, for example, harsh calico.

2. Pattern of furniture covers

If the sofa is of a standard rectangular shape or even angular, but with walls and backs of a regular straight shape, then it is easier to make a pattern. Having accurately measured each of the parts of the sofa, you need to place them on graph paper (to scale), taking into account the direction of the cut (share line). In the future, all these calculations need to be transferred to the fabric, making chalk markings along the wrong side. When cutting, be sure to take into account seam allowances, hems, etc.

It is impossible to give exact recommendations on how to make a pattern for sofa covers. Every sofa is a special case and the option of sewing a cover for it will be its own, unique. We can only give a few tips to avoid simple mistakes. Well, for example, it is better to make a pattern with large allowances, and after trying on, adjust these allowances by cutting them with scissors.

For the pattern, you can use ordinary newspapers or carbon paper if you “paste” over parts of the sofa parts with them, outlining their shape with a pencil and cutting out with scissors. Then assemble all these parts using tape, and “feel free” to adjust the pattern with scissors right “in place”. You can connect the cuts with tape, the missing areas can be increased by gluing pieces of paper with tape.
The more accurately (tighter) you build the pattern, the greater the likelihood of making mistakes when sewing a furniture cover. The sofa has a rectangular shape only in appearance. In fact, its shapes are very complex, it’s difficult to guess their configuration precise calculation impossible. Even in a factory, furniture upholstery is not sewn according to a pre-made pattern, but is covered, as if covering a sofa with film, fixing the stretched edges with fasteners (stapler clips). Therefore, do not try to exactly replicate the shape of your sofa using the “most accurate” pattern. It’s better to make a cover for the sofa of a more free shape, as in the top photo, the main purpose of which will be to change its appearance, and not to “pull” the fabric upholstery over it.

Use all kinds of decorative bows, ribbons and belts. They are a good way to distract attention from bad places and perfectly refresh the overall design of the room and, in addition, will additionally decorate the furniture cover you have sewn.
Numerous decorative pillows They are also capable of hiding many of the inaccuracies of a sewn cover, and besides, they can be used for their intended purpose. Sewing them is quite simple, much like sewing a pillowcase, and you can “stuff” them with anything, even scraps of fabric left over from cutting sofa covers.

To prevent your beloved cats from digging into the leather upholstery of the sofa even through the covers, it is advisable to place thin foam rubber (1-1.5 cm) inside the covers, which can be bought at any decent hardware store.

When sewing, use strong and reinforced threads, but not too thick, otherwise sewing machine will be "capricious".

Since the cover will experience a lot of stress at the seams, especially if the pattern is very tight, some seams can be stitched twice. Just do not make too small a stitch on the sewing machine; this will not make the seams stronger, but it can destroy the fibers of the tapestry fabric.

Grandma's old manual machine Podolsk is the best sewing machine for sewing covers. If you do not have such a machine, then we do not recommend sewing thick furniture fabric on household car. As a last resort, you can sew on such a machine furniture fabric, folded only in half, well, in three layers maximum, and then at the slowest speed.
Then think about how to make connections between parts to avoid multi-layered “intersections” of fabric. Can I make some parts of the overall case separately, without connecting them to each other? Separate cover for the back, separately for the seat and armrests. By the way, in the “design” of the cover you can use twisted long zippers to close the cover or a linen elastic band. See also How to make a pattern and sew a pillow. In this article, the master will share his experience on how to sew a pillow and how to create a pattern for any shape of a soft pillow.

Underwear elastic can be added to the seams, in those places where you need to remove the “slack”.
"Velcro" can be used to connect parts of the cover into one whole.
Various types of cords and ribbons are useful for tying the legs and tightening hems at the bottom, etc.

5. Don’t rush to sew a cover from expensive fabric

And most importantly, don’t get caught up in the idea of sewing a cover with your own hands, and even more so, don’t immediately buy expensive fabric. Not everyone can sew covers correctly the first time. This is a very complex and skilled job. Sometimes, even for a specialist, it is much easier to sew a dress for a non-standard figure than a cover for a seemingly ordinary-shaped sofa. First, sew a cover for a sofa or chair in the country from simple fabrics, and only then take up the furniture covers in the living room of your house.

Sewing a replacement sofa cover is a great alternative to replacing old upholstery. In addition, the covers are removable, which means they can be washed. Sew several covers and change them from season to season or depending on the occasion.

When choosing fabrics for a cover, you can come up with unexpected combinations and different types finishing.

Follow our instructions and you can easily change the style and mood of your living room.

The cover consists of three elements: a lining, a cross-shaped top and decorative elements on the corners of the sofa.
The top of the cover in the photo below is made of tapestry fabric, which contrasts with the iridescent silk of the corner elements.

Making a cover pattern

Start with four basic measurements: cover length, width, armrest length, and armrest width.

Taking measurements

For the top of the case:
1. To determine the length of the cover, measure the sofa from front to back, starting from the floor in front of the sofa and ending with the floor behind the back, plus 25-30 cm for a loose fit, plus allowances for hems.
2. To determine the width of the cover, measure the sofa seat plus seam allowances.
3. The length of ONE armrest is measured from the seat through the armrest to the floor plus 25-30 cm for a loose fit, plus allowances for hems.
4. To determine the width of the armrest, measure the width of the sofa seat plus seam allowances.

For lining:
Length = length of the cover according to point 1 above.
Width = the width of the cover (point 2 above) plus two lengths of the armrest (point 3 multiplied by 2), and minus 2 allowances for hems.

Sewing Tips:

Lay out the parts of the cover on the sofa with the wrong side up, determine where to sew the side parts (armrests) and baste them to the central part.

Lining

Case design option

Elegant case with top part from brocade

To prevent the fabric of the cover from “wrinkling” when you sit on it, prepare wooden rods equal to 5/8 of the length/width of the sofa and recess them between the seat and backrests. If the sides of the sofa are curved, use a tap for the same purpose. PVC pipe the appropriate length, bending it into the desired shape.

Our option for sewing a cover for a sofa, consisting of a lining and a top, allows you to choose the fabric for decorating the sofa that you like, but it is not enough to sew a whole cover. For example, pieces of antique fabrics.

Decoration of corners

The corners of the cover can be designed in different ways, thoroughly choosing accessories, and get impressive results. Use our ideas to start imagining!

Instead of a cord, you can use belts with rings, which are sewn from the main fabric of the top of the case

DIY for an updated sofa

Now many craftswomen sew textile decor for their homes on their own, preferring it to purchased products. But few people decide to take on the task of making a cover for an armchair or sofa. It is believed that such interior decoration is quite difficult to make with your own hands. And the main difficulties lie not in the sewing technology, but in the construction of the pattern.

The cover is convenient because it can be easily removed, washed and put on the sofa.

Indeed, patterning a cover for a sofa or chair may seem quite complicated, since it consists of many parts. It is even more difficult to think through all the elements of the future design. But if you understand the scheme for constructing such a pattern, then there should be no difficulties when working.

Preliminary stage of work

First, you need to decide on the future appearance of the cover, and only then start creating a pattern. Ideas can be gleaned from publications dedicated to home decor. And there is no need to be intimidated by the apparent complexity of the design. Most likely, the pattern of the cover itself will be a combination of several rectangular elements. In Fig. Figure 1 shows ideas for similar products that were used to decorate the same piece of furniture.

Please note that the first 4 models were not sewn. They are simply a draped piece of fabric. You can also follow this path and first form the future cover on your sofa, and then start cutting. In this case, you may not need a pattern.

Figure 1. Options for covering a sofa with a cover.

When choosing fabric for a cover, give preference to thin, easily draped materials: viscose, rayon or satin. Such cases are not designed for long term services, but they are also cheap. Therefore, you can change the decor of the room at your discretion. If you want to sew a dense, tight-fitting cover, then you should pay attention to dense fabrics for furniture. It can be gabardine, velor or tapestry. Such products will last much longer.

For sewing similar product usually buy about 5-5.5 m of fabric of standard width (from 1.4-1.5 m). But only a ready-made cover pattern will give you a more accurate material consumption. Therefore, you should first build a pattern, and only then go to the store. In addition to fabric, you will need the following:

  • sewing machine;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • a set of special feet for a sewing machine;
  • basting thread and needle;
  • pins.

Don’t forget about the tools for taking measurements and creating a pattern. Stock up on a large ruler, a tailor's measuring tape and a square. In addition, you will need paper for the pattern. It makes more sense to take graph paper, but it can be replaced with wrapping paper. Use masking tape to attach individual sheets of paper together. Then you will receive a sheet of the size you need.

Taking measurements from the sofa

Figure 2. The process of taking measurements from a sofa: 1 – length of the sofa with hem allowance, 2 – width of the sofa with seam and hem allowance, 3 – depth (thickness).

The easiest way is to rip out the seams of the old sofa cover and simply copy them. But this is not always possible. In this case, the pattern is built anew. In this case, you need to accurately take all the necessary measurements.

To calculate the required amount of material required to sew a cover, measure the furniture, one by one taking its dimensions at the longest and widest point of a particular element. To all the values obtained, add 7-10 cm for seam and hem allowances and 15-20 cm for the edges that will be folded inward. To make the cover easy to put on and take off, a flap-shaped closure with buttons can be provided in the middle of the back of the back, with ties on the outer sides of the armrest or on the rear edges. It is wiser to immediately take into account all the allowances when creating the pattern for the covers. This will help you stitch a large item correctly.

To measure the sofa you need to take the following measurements:

  1. Dimensions outside armrest.
  2. Dimensions of the back of the sofa.
  3. Dimensions of the front side of the sofa seat.

When taking measurements, make sure that the measuring tape is not stretched. Pull it from point to point with a slight slack in the middle. Otherwise, the cover may turn out to be too narrow and cramped. It makes more sense to add 1 cm to all the measurements obtained. This will give the necessary space.

Newbie mistakes

Some beginning craftswomen have problems not so much with constructing a sofa pattern, but with taking the necessary measurements. The pattern of the cover is quite complex, but at the same time geometrically correct design. And to build it, you need to know exactly where each part is located. How to accurately take the necessary measurements is shown in Fig. 2.

Figure 3. An example of a finished pattern for sofa covers.

Measurement of the outer side of the armrest. It starts from the seam connecting the inner part to the outer one. Please note that the inner piece (labeled a-b in the picture) wraps around the outer part of the armrest. The front part (o-p) is an insert that connects the outer and inner parts. On straight armrests, this insert also runs along the top of the element, where the inner and outer parts are adjacent to it on both sides.

Back length (s-s) is measured at the widest point of the back. The length of the back is equal to the distance from the top seam to the floor. Next, you need to decide on the sofa seat. Its front side is sometimes shaped like a frill. Its height is measured from the bottom of the sofa to the top seam (u-l). This element is sewn to the bottom of the seat and hangs down to the floor. Its width is equal to the distance from one edge of the seat to the other (v-w). And it has no duplicate parts. But sometimes such a strip can extend onto the side parts (w-x). In some models it can continue on the back side. At the same time, it can be laid in simple or bow folds.

Add 10cm for the back clasp and 15cm for the side clasp. The zipper should be strong enough and match the density of the material you choose. When creating a pattern, it is necessary to take into account the reserve that will be needed to fit the fabric into place. When calculating material consumption, you need to take into account the fabric that will be needed to cut the seat cushion covers.

Making patterns for covers

An example of a finished pattern is shown in Fig. 3.

Naturally, you can specify your own measurements and adjust this pattern to suit your needs. Then all you have to do is cut the fabric. But if such a drawing is too complicated for you, then there is 1 more way. Create a pattern for only the back part of the back, and cut all other elements “on the fly”, focusing on this blank.

It is worth noting that the fabric consumption with this method is very large, since all parts are cut out with huge allowances (at least 15 cm on each side).

Therefore, it is wiser to first make a pattern for the cover from cheap fabric, such as chintz, and then use it as a pattern.

But this method there is one undeniable plus - the pattern of the cover will fit on your sofa like a glove.

Don't forget to label all the pieces on the wrong side, otherwise you will get them mixed up. Mark the position of seams, darts, gathers and folds. Be sure to indicate the direction of the grain thread and the middle of the part. These lines will help you connect different elements. Use a dotted line to mark the position of the seams and their intersection points.

Fold the workpiece in half lengthwise and mark the direction of the grain thread. Then unfold it again and pin it to the back of the chair. Now place the fabric over the front of the back and straighten it so that no wrinkles form. Bring the edges of the front and back pieces together and pin them together. Cut it out of the material (without removing it from the sofa) necessary element.

Designers say that with the help of covers you can refresh any product. However, it is often not possible to purchase the necessary decorative element. In most cases, buyers simply cannot find the most suitable model. And if you do come across one, the cost may be too high and you have to refuse the purchase.

Experienced needlewomen are convinced that any type of product can be made by novice craftsmen. The main thing is to follow the instructions. In this article we will study the technology of making covers for a corner sofa with your own hands. Let's see how simple options, and more complex.

Required materials and tools

To realize your idea, you need to be well prepared. It’s best to start by choosing the fabric that will be used to create the idea. Professional seamstresses note that it is much easier to work with knitted material. Especially if the sofa has an uneven back. Although novice masters may choose a different option. But at the same time, you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to work hard on the work. You will also need the following tools for creativity:

  • large tailor's scissors;
  • piece of chalk;
  • tape measure;
  • special pins;
  • piece of paper and pen.

Measurement technology

Obviously, the easiest way is to make your own covers for a corner sofa, which consists of even rectangles and squares. If the piece of furniture you are studying is decorated with a carved back, you should not be upset. You just need to use any stretchy material. But in any case, you should first measure the sofa. To think through the work, create a pattern and sew a beautiful case, you need to find out the following parameters:

  • sofa height;
  • the length of each backrest is from the corner to the armrest;
  • the width of each backrest is from the highest point to the seat;
  • length, width and height of each seat.

When cutting a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands, it is important to take into account that the length of the backrest of interest is not equal to the length of the corresponding seat. And the difference between the first and second parameters will help to draw a diagonal - the junction of two parts corner sofa. But more on that later.

Cover-cape

Experienced needlewomen advise craftsmen who are just beginning to master the technology not to take on complex products. The first step is to make a cover that looks more like a cape. To perform it, you can prepare any fabric, even denser ones. But you should remember that it will have to be flashed. And the thicker the material, the more difficult it will be to do this. In any case, the first step is to prepare the fabric and draw a pattern on it according to the image proposed below.

However, it should first be adjusted taking into account the size of your piece of furniture. It is also worth noting that when you manage to cut out a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands, its edges can be carefully wrapped, framed with a satin ribbon, or tied with a hook. Each needlewoman must choose the most preferable option independently.

How to cut a one-piece case

If the reader decides to make this version of the product being studied, he should immediately prepare for the fact that he will have to tinker with it. Especially at the stage of cutting out parts. However, there is no need to be afraid; the technology is quite accessible even to novice craftsmen. After all, below we will explain in detail how to make a pattern for a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands:

  1. We prepare a piece of fabric, the width of which is equal to the sum of the following parameters: sofa height + back width + seat length + seat height. And the length is the sum of the lengths of both backs + two heights of the sofa.
  2. We spread the prepared piece of material.
  3. Using a measuring tape and chalk, mark the indicated points.
  4. Then we add the length of each seat.
  5. We lower two vertical lines to the bottom edge of the canvas.
  6. We draw diagonals from the end of each horizontal segment to the junction of the two backs.
  7. In this way we manage to outline the “house” that should be cut out. It is shaded gray in the diagram.

Assembling a one-piece case

Having prepared the part the right size, let's start stitching. To do this, we use a machine or work manually with a needle and thread. Our task is to connect the two parts of the seat together by stitching the sides that were formed after cutting out the extra “house”.

In the diagram, the junction is indicated by a red zigzag line. Next, you should fold the canvas, separating the main part of the sofa from the backs. The fold locations are indicated by green zigzag lines. As you can see, sewing a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands is much easier than cutting it out. However, we have not finished our work yet. We folded the fabric, as a result of which we were able to form two backs. Now you should sew them along the zigzag lines marked in blue on the diagram.

At this stage, we can say with confidence that the bulk of the work is behind us. In fact, we have already managed to make a cover for the corner sofa. But in order to prevent it from slipping when sitting, it should be supplemented with an elastic band, which must be sewn along the entire lower edge of the resulting frame.

Pattern of a stylish case with a frill

Cutting this version of the product is no more difficult than the previous one. But it is important to understand that in this case the work involves slightly different actions. Experienced needlewomen say that readers who get tired of a one-piece case, sewn according to previously studied instructions, can easily turn it into stylish model with frill. To do this, you just need to determine the length of the frill, and then cut off a strip of the required width along the bottom edge.

If you have to cut out a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands, the photo diagram proposed above should be slightly adjusted. However, it is important to consider that to implement the idea you will need a smaller rectangle. That is, its width will be less than the sum of the following parameters: sofa height + backrest width + seat length + seat height. The difference will be as much as the intended length of the frill. Accordingly, the length will also decrease: (the sum of the lengths of both backs + two heights of the sofa) - the length of the frill.

After making simple calculations, we go to the store and buy the required cut. It is also important not to forget about the frill. Traditionally it is made from cotton. Light and airy fabric. For example, organza. But in this case, you need to make a multi-layer frill so that the shabby sofa does not show through. It is also important to consider that the length of the frill should be one and a half to two times greater than the length of the bottom edge, because this part will be wavy, and this can only be achieved if more material is used.

Assembling a cover with a frill

As you can see, you can make any covers for a corner sofa with your own hands. The photos offered in the article demonstrate that it is best to use any stretchable fabric to create this item. Mostly knitted. A cover with a frill is sewn in the same way as a solid one. And then a frill is sewn along the bottom edge. Moreover, experienced needlewomen advise first attaching it with an elastic band. This will create neat and smooth “waves”. It is also worth processing the lower edge of the frill so that it does not fray and the product looks more presentable and expensive. If desired, it can be decorated with a satin ribbon suitable color.

Pattern of a cover for a corner sofa and armchair

Many novice needlewomen are hesitant to give worn interior items as gifts. new life, because they are afraid of not coping with the task. We took the technology to the sofa. We hope it will help readers create a truly beautiful and original item that will decorate any room. But the method of sewing a chair cover has not yet been studied. But professional craftswomen like to joke that for those who have successfully completed a cover for a corner sofa, cutting and sewing a similar product for an armchair will seem like a real fairy tale.

According to reviews of covers for a corner sofa (photos of the best options are presented in the article), if you delve into the process, this statement can be considered justified. Because the chair, like an ordinary sofa, does not have a complex angle. This means that it does not require creating a pattern taking into account this detail. Thus, we need a rectangle whose width is: chair height + backrest width + seat length + seat height. And the length is the length of the single back + two heights of the chair. The size of the rectangle required to sew a cover for a regular sofa is calculated in a similar way.

We only need to fold the canvas, departing from each edge the height of the chair. In the diagram, the folds are marked with a green zigzag line. And then, highlighting the armrests, sew the sides marked in blue.

  • Another feature and at the same time, the main advantage of sofa covers is their cost-effectiveness. Their use in Everyday life helps you save a lot. After all, such a furniture cover will in any case cost much less than purchasing a new sofa or restoring it.

Those who already use such sofa covers in everyday life say that they significantly save time, effort and money. A wide variety of materials are used to create them.

Materials

Absolutely any materials existing today can be used to make sofa covers. However, experienced seamstresses say that it is necessary to avoid too thick upholstery fabrics that are used directly to create sofas, since they are difficult to use and at home it will be difficult to create a beautiful and practical cover from them. It is also not recommended to use fabric that is too light, such as chiffon or satin. Of course, covers made from these materials look luxurious, but they are not very practical to care for, and they wear out quite quickly.

The best options The fabrics used to create such a cover are the following:

  • Flock or artificial velvet substitute. It is very soft, pleasant to the touch. The great advantages of this material are its characteristics: it is easy to clean, does not undergo deformation, and does not change the color intensity of the paints even after prolonged exposure to the sun. It is also important that this fabric has good water-repellent functions due to its high density. Also, it is in flock that linen mites are least likely to appear. The material is very light and easy to use, but can sometimes cause an allergic reaction.
  • Cotton or wool velor. This fabric is not capable of causing allergies, is not a source of static current accumulation, has a long service life and is very easy to clean, and does not deform after washing. The disadvantages of this material are its decent cost, as well as relatively high fragility, for example, cat's claws can quickly render such a case unusable.
  • Microfiber or artificial suede substitute. It is advisable to give preference to fabric that has been previously impregnated with a special Teflon mixture. Not only will it be soft and pleasant to the touch and wear-resistant, but it will also repel water, grease and dirt from its surface. This fabric feels very soft and pleasant to the touch. It does not fade in the sun or become deformed, and does not cause allergic reactions.
  • Teflon flock– a universal fabric for a sofa cover if there are animals or small children in the house. It has the same qualities as regular flock, but in addition to them, it also repels any type of dirt from its surface and does not absorb water at all. It is almost impossible to get such a cover dirty.

  • Jacquard- This is a fabric with increased strength indicators. She doesn't give in various types deformation and does not change its size during operation. Soft and pleasant to the touch, it has an expensive and presentable appearance. Quite easy to use and care.
  • Leather. It is quite rare to see a leather cover on a sofa. Indeed, such material is not often used, due to its high cost and certain inconveniences during operation. If you still decide to sew just such a cover for furniture, then it is better to use artificial leather.
  • Flannel stretch. Usually a fabric with a compression effect is used. These covers are very easy to wash and dry. They stretch easily and completely follow all the contours of the furniture. It is the least expensive compared to other materials.
  • Cotton- This natural material for a sofa cover. It has many colors and textures and does not cause allergies. It’s just that hard-to-reach stains are difficult to remove from it, and during the washing process the fabric may shrink too much.

It is still better to give preference to denser fabrics, since their service life is much longer. In addition to the fabric itself, to create a cover you will also need threads, needles, patterns, and preferably also sewing machine. Although you can do without it.

Dimensions

In order for the case to look beautiful and last a long time, you need to choose the right size. Sofa covers can be dimensionless, double, triple and corner. In order to decide which size you need, you just need to take simple measurements. The dimensionless cover can be made from any material. His distinctive feature lies in the fact that the lower and side parts of the fabric itself are located on a special elastic band like an accordion, so you can stretch the cover over a sofa of any size and shape. This cape is called “Eurocover”; its distinctive feature is the use of very dense material and heavy-duty elastic bands. In order to find out the sizes of other types of covers, you need to measure the height of the sofa itself and the length of its back. Thus, a double sofa has a backrest with a length of 120 cm to 150 cm, and their height does not exceed 100 cm.

A three-seater sofa usually has a height of up to one meter, but it can be 10 cm more or less than indicated, and the length of the back is in the range from 150 to 210 cm. With covers for a corner sofa, everything is a little different. There are standard covers on sale, designed for sofas up to one meter high and with a back length from 300 cm to 450 cm. If the dimensions of your furniture are different, then before sewing you need to measure the same parameters and create a pattern for the future cover in accordance with them. A wide variety of cases are available for sale. But only a hand-made cover for your favorite sofa can emphasize the individuality of the room and become a real decoration of the interior.

How to create?

In fact, making a cover for your favorite sofa with your own hands is not so difficult. All you need is to stock up on tools, choose fabric, buy it in the required quantity and follow our short instructions. The easiest way is to make a cover for a sofa without armrests, so if your cover is the first one you have sewn with your own hands, it is better to start with it. Stretchable covers, which can be sewn both on sofas with and without armrests, will be no more difficult to manufacture. The most labor-intensive thing to make is a sofa book cover.

But regardless of the type of sofa and the size of the cover created for it, you must first decide on the amount of fabric that will be needed for the job. In order to find out its exact quantity, you need to measure the length and width of your sofa, multiply the resulting numbers by two, and then add them together. The total amount is the number of meters of fabric required.

  • The pattern is the very first stage. To create it, you need to take measurements from the sofa and put them on thick paper, completely observing all the curves of the furniture. The process is quite lengthy, so you can make it simpler. Take an old cover, rip it open and trace it along the outline on paper, from which you can then cut out the pattern itself. It is best to make the pattern without a skirt; if necessary, this detail can be made later. Now the resulting pattern is applied to the material from the inside out and outlined with an overlap of 1 cm around the edges.

  • Necessary tools. They are: paper or cardboard for the pattern, measuring tape, chalk, the fabric itself, threads, needles, wooden slats, scissors and sewing machine. In some cases, you can do without a machine, for example, if you are sewing the simplest covers that take the shape of a sofa with elastic for furniture without armrests. You may also need safety pins and regular pins; it is better to prepare them in advance. To create a pattern you will need a large free space, it is better if it is a table with a large tabletop.

Step-by-step instruction

Here we will look at several options for sewing covers for sofas, depending on their design and size. P sewing a cover for a sofa with an ottoman without armrests or a regular one.

  • Make a pattern according to the size of your sofa.
  • Transfer the resulting pattern onto the fabric. It is very important not to forget about the overlap here. Ideally, it should be equal to 1 cm, but if the cover is sewn for the first time, then you can leave more free space.
  • Now you need to connect all parts of the fabric together with a regular seam. This will not only connect the parts of the pattern into one whole, but will also help make working with the sewing machine easier in the future.
  • Now all the seams are sewn one by one.

  • If the cover has an elastic band, it is necessary to cut off the required amount and apply it to the bottom of the cover before it is stitched around the edges. It is worth remembering that the elastic will stretch, so its length should be slightly more than half the length of the lower part of the fabric. It is best to measure the length of the bottom of the sofa with the stretched length of the elastic band, and then the top.
  • The elastic is applied to the fabric and traced along the width. Using chalk, a line is drawn on the fabric, which determines the position of the elastic inside the future cover.
  • Stitches are made using a needle and thread, which form the location of the elastic in the fabric, that is, a kind of tunnel for it.
  • The elastic is inserted into the cover and all seams are basted carefully stitched on a machine.
  • You can determine the location of the elastic in advance when creating a pattern. and while sewing together the parts of the future cover, perform the last two procedures.

If you decide to choose the option of creating such a cape for a model with an armrest, then the sequence of actions should be as follows:

  • Calculation of the required amount of material. The length and width of the furniture are alternately multiplied by two, and then the resulting numbers are added together.
  • Using thin wooden slats, the fabric is attached to the sofa. It is best to do this at the joints of the backrests and seats, as well as the armrests and backrests.
  • The fabric is pressed onto the edges of the armrests and on the corners of the furniture itself special clamps . You can use a regular construction stapler.
  • The slats and clips are decorated with fabric. Decorative elements in this case are selected individually depending on wishes.
  • The sofa cover is ready.

The advantages of such a cover are the simplicity and speed of its production, but the disadvantage is that it cannot be removed, cleaned and washed regularly. The cover for the sofa book is sewn as follows:

  • Remove patterns.
  • Transfer the patterns to the fabric and cut them out.
  • If necessary, mark the location of the future elastic band. It is preferable that the cover for such a sofa be elastic.
  • Now the fabric parts are sewn together. The nuance here is that the cover will not consist of one whole canvas, but of several. Therefore, the cover for the back, seat and armrests is sewn separately.
  • All seams are additionally sewn on a machine.

The cover for a corner sofa is considered the most labor-intensive to manufacture. We have prepared for you the simplest step-by-step instructions for creating it.

  • Using safety pins you need to attach the fabric to the sofa.
  • All rectangles, namely the sides, back, seat and the armrests are highlighted with pins.
  • Using thread, you need to sweep away all the parts, completely repeating the curves of the furniture. You can use regular chalk instead of thread. You need to start from the upper parts of the sofa.
  • Unnecessary parts of the fabric are cut off. It is important not to forget to leave an overlap.
  • Now all the cut out parts are sewn together in pairs. Please note that this case also consists of two parts: upper and lower. Therefore, parts of the backrest and the seat of the corner sofa are sewn separately.
  • Then the covers are turned inside out and fitted to the sofa. If necessary, it is necessary to mark on the fabric where it is necessary to narrow or, conversely, widen the seam.
  • After changes made are being implemented and the cover is completely stitched by machine.

Of course, in each specific case the process of making a sofa cover will be different. But his sewing skills come with practice. In order not to be disappointed in the result obtained, you need to listen to the advice of more experienced seamstresses:

  • If the cover is being sewn for the first time, then it is better not to use very expensive material.
  • It is necessary to purchase fabric with a small margin, one or two meters will be enough for this. The excess material can later be spent on decorating a finished cover, masking its minor flaws, or reupholstering chairs and armchairs.
  • Always check the accuracy of your measurements. The proverb “Measure twice and cut once” is very relevant in this case.
  • There's no need to rush. It is better to try on the future cover after estimating the details. If any inaccuracies are identified at this stage of sewing, they can be corrected.
  • Always leave at least 1cm of fabric overlap. When creating the first cover, the fabric overlap can be up to 8 cm long. The excess will then be easy to cut off.
  • If you are sewing a cover for a sofa in the house Where there are a lot of children, it is better to use waterproof material. This will extend the life of your product.
  • Sewing such a cape requires time and perseverance.. Therefore, try not to be distracted by extraneous matters.

At first glance, it may seem that sewing such covers is a difficult and tedious task. In fact, quite the opposite. A sofa with removable covers can change its appearance as often as you want. At the same time, with each case you sew, your skill will increase, and the time spent and the amount of work will correspondingly decrease.
