Update the design with your own hands in an apartment or house, photo

How to update old door many owners think, because replacing even interior or entrance structures is not an easy task. When replacing the box, it is impossible not to damage the finish of the opening and maintain the integrity of the slopes.

And the price of a new door, even a simple one, is not affordable for everyone. In this case, there is only one way out - updating the unpresentable old design: decor, original restoration.

And believe me, with the right approach, your “new old” door can become, as in the photo, the main decoration of the facade or serve as an accent element for the interior. Today we will look in detail at how to update an old door with our own hands.

Internal, because in most cases they are made of wood or its derivatives, and there are, as they say, a thousand and one ways to decorate wood. In principle, this is not a difficult job, and the video: “Decoration of old doors” will help you cope with it.

In our article you will also find a lot of useful information on this topic:

  • What's the point of decorating a surface that has dents and scratches? In addition, the door leaf can be painted so many times that a thick layer of paint not only spoils appearance, but also prevents him from shutting up normally.
  • Most doors in houses built 50-60 years ago are made of solid wood. But why throw such a product into a landfill when it can be restored! So, it starts with bringing them into proper form. The restoration method should be chosen in accordance with their original condition.

How to change the appearance of products

  • Do it practically new door It’s quite possible to do it yourself. To do this, you will need to purchase furniture wax, solvent, clear varnish and a retouching pencil from the store. We think a soldering iron and sandpaper can be found in every home. You may also need a sander and blowtorch– it all depends on the area of paintwork that will have to be removed.

Note! If there is a thick layer on the canvas oil paint, solvent will not help here, and you won’t be able to remove it with sandpaper either. This is when you will need a blowtorch: with its help, the surface of the paint is heated until it swells, and then it is simply scraped off with a spatula.

  • The main thing is to heat the paint evenly, without holding the flame for a long time in one area. The doors, of course, must first be removed from their hinges, and placed on convenient supports, dismantled glass elements, If there are any. You also need to remove the locks and all fittings.

Decorating an old door with your own hands can be quite labor-intensive if you don't have a sander. After all, if the paint needs to be removed over the entire area of the canvas, then the surface will have to be sanded completely: first with a large abrasive, then with a fine one.

And do it manually, using sandpaper, not so easy. But let's start with a simpler repair option.

Repairing damage

Now let's look at how to update a damaged door with your own hands, because this happens quite often. Perhaps your design is not that old, but simply has some damage to the varnish coating and the canvas itself.

This happens most often. In this case, there is no need to completely remove the varnish - the surface is prepared for decoration by sanding the damaged areas.

So:

  • First, with the help of a solvent applied to a napkin, stubborn dirt and dust are removed from the varnished surface. Then use coarse sandpaper to remove the layer of varnish on the damaged areas. After this treatment, the top layer of the coating will be erased and become whitish.

Photo of a pencil for retouching

  • Don't let this scare you, to fix this you will need a retouching pencil. Such pencils are sold in a set, like ordinary felt-tip pens, only they contain stain as paint. The colors of such pencils usually correspond to wood tones.
  • The shade suitable for the restoration of a particular surface is simply selected according to a line drawn on a white sheet of paper. All scratches are retouched, after which they begin to repair large potholes. Here a pencil is no longer an assistant, but you need furniture wax. They melt it with a regular soldering iron, although you can also purchase a special heater, which you see in the photo below.
  • The deeper the pothole, the more wax you will need. In the depths of the recess, its color can be any, but the surface of the wax “plug” should be chosen a tone lighter. After filling, the pothole is also retouched with neat strokes, and the place of the former damage is well camouflaged. It is better to do this in daylight so that you can correctly assess the match between the shades of the pencil, wax and the base color of the door.

  • When not just a scratch is being eliminated, but a larger area of damage is being restored, it is possible, and even necessary, to use two pencils, with a dark and a light shade - this makes it easier to imitate a wood pattern. After repairing the damage, the door remains to be varnished. The easiest way to do this quickly and evenly is to use an aerosol can.

This restoration method is excellent for both wooden doors and veneered chipboard panels, which apartment buildings occur most often. Watching a master class from a professional will help you better understand how to decorate old doors with your own hands.

Processing of solid wood panels

Now let's look at how to update a wooden door. When we are dealing with a wooden blind door, it can be restored more radically, without selecting pencils by color, but by completely changing the decorative coating.

It can be painted in a non-standard way, covered with veneer, pasted with 3D wallpaper or made with interesting appliqués. There are quite a lot of options, but to implement them, one thing is important - before producing such decor, the surface must be properly prepared.

  • About how to remove old paint manually, we already said. But those who have a grinder at their disposal will not need any blowtorch. By changing the attachments on the working surface of the machine, you can remove the paint and thoroughly sand the door leaf. Sanding will not only give a smooth surface, but will also open up the pores of the wood.

This is important if you want to tint its surface so that the natural texture of the wood is visible. After sanding, it is necessary to fill small potholes, knots and cracks in the canvas, after which the entire surface is coated with a primer for the appropriate purpose.

Decoration options

Door made from natural wood, can be designed in a variety of ways. You can, of course, just paint it with stain and apply fresh varnish.

For finishing wooden canvas You can also use methods used in interior design. It all depends on what kind of wood will be under the removed paint.

So:

  • If it is beech, walnut, alder, or, for example, ash, their texture should not be hidden under a layer of paint. These are valuable rocks, and they naturally have a beautiful pattern, which only needs to be emphasized by covering it with azure or patina. It will look very interesting if the door has a paneled design.

Panel structure covered with veneer

  • After sanding, it is easier to cover a panel door made of birch or pine with veneer made from valuable species (see), and then tint it. It is quite possible to get the result you see in the picture above if the surface of the door is well prepared.
  • The beauty of the veneered surface will leave few people indifferent, but today no one will be surprised by the wood pattern. In addition, this is the most expensive way to restore doors. Many homeowners prefer to make an ordinary door original, using non-standard techniques for this purpose.

Original design

  • This does not require any special knowledge, but rather wild imagination. So, having decided to restore one or more doors, it would be nice to organize a competition between adults and even small inhabitants of the house on Best offer. Or maybe it makes sense to borrow a ready-made idea, such as in the example we have proposed. The piano keys on the interior door look interesting, don’t they?

Such design can be done by applying an artistic drawing, and it’s good if one of the household members has such talents. Otherwise, it is much easier to look for photo wallpaper with a similar or other interesting design - rather than hire an artist to decorate the door.

Decoupage technique

To decorate a door leaf, any door, not just a wooden one, you can use one more, very popular way. This is a technique called by the beautiful French word “decoupage” (see). What it is? Essentially, this is an applique cut from fabric, wallpaper and other roll materials, and pasted onto a hard surface.

  • Stores also sell ready-made cards for decoupage. Using this method, the door can be decorated in the same style as the walls, curtains or cabinet furniture. Moreover, you can decorate not only the door itself, but also the wall around the perimeter of the opening.
  • Another type of decoupage is stenciling. To create it, just buy a stencil made of polymer film from a store that sells handicrafts, and stamp the design onto a canvas that has already been painted with background paint. Several patterns around its perimeter, at eye level or around glass inserts, will transform the door like nothing else.

Decoupage in chalkboard style

  • If desired, you can even imitate an inlaid surface with the help of applications and drawings. The style and quality of finishing will depend on the materials used for the decoration - and, of course, on the time and money that you intend to spend on it. By the way, you can also use ordinary interior stickers to decorate the door (see).
  • If the door is in good condition, that is, its surface does not require repair, the door leaf does not even need to be removed from the hinges. In this case, it needs to be cleaned of dust deposits, the greasy film removed from the surface, a primer applied and painted with paint, the shade of which should become the background for the application.
  • The door can also be decorated in a patchwork style, using bright squares of fabric or wallpaper, pasted in a similar way to a multi-colored patchwork quilt. A similar version of decoupage can be applied to the insert. Let's say the door was previously glazed: the glass broke or its appearance simply does not match your interior.

Unusual inserts

  • In this case, instead of glazing, you can make an excellent insert from a piece of plywood, decorated in one of the listed ways. And by the way, the decoupage technique is great for decorating the glass itself - only its surface should not be corrugated.

The process of decorating depends on what materials you use for this. If these are decals or interior stickers, you need to refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

The paper and fabric are glued to PVA, the edges are sealed with putty, treated with zero-grade sandpaper and varnished.

Conclusion

The door can be perfectly decorated by applying a geometric frame to it. These can be moldings painted around the perimeter, a glued polyurethane frieze, or mounted and contrastingly painted shaped slats.

By the way, they can be stuffed over the entire area of the canvas. This design is perfect for smooth panel doors and looks very interesting.

As for the paint, if you choose some unusual shade or use a textured option, the door will turn out chic without any additional decor. There are many options for how to update a door, now the choice is yours.

Do-it-yourself door restoration allows you to update your interior without investment. Doors made from solid wood are especially easy to restore. In fact, there are many ways to update a door, returning it to its attractive appearance. Restoration of doors can be carried out efficiently with your own hands, but for this you need to properly carry out the preparatory work.

DIY restoration of old interior doors

With prolonged use, many defects appear on interior doors. The most common breakdowns include:

  • damage and falling off of platbands;
  • cracks;
  • fractures;
  • detachment;
  • mashing;
  • breakdown of fittings;
  • peeling off the panel;
  • broken glass;
  • creak.

The most difficult to correct is the curvature of the multilayer fabric. Such a defect often appears due to the material being saturated with water. In addition, a similar problem may arise as a result of technical irregularities during production. Doors made of fiberboard and MDF often suffer from such a defect. It is not always possible to restore a door made of these materials in the presence of severe deformation and delamination.

In some cases, it is much easier to make an effort and update interior doors than changing them. Restoration should be carried out if:

  • non-standard sizes;
  • there is a risk of damage to the wall cladding and the integrity of the opening;
  • there is an ornament and texture of the canvas;
  • there are no fatal defects.

You should not try to refresh the appearance of interior doors if their leaf or frame is severely cracked, dry, or the integrity of the structure has been compromised. If there are severe deformations and distortions of the elements, restoration is impossible. Doors made from such cheap materials as MFD, chipboard, etc. are difficult to restore. If delamination or swelling of the canvas occurs due to the influence of moisture, it will not be possible to eliminate such defects. Restoring veneer doors is especially problematic.

Preparing for recovery

Before proceeding directly to the restoration, you should prepare the tools and materials that may be required during the work. These include:

  • set of spatulas;
  • screwdrivers;
  • electric drill;
  • pliers;
  • sandpaper;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • gas-burner;
  • chemical solvents;
  • electric grinder;
  • carpenter's knife;
  • chisel;
  • varnish or stain;
  • hammer and nails;
  • flute brush;
  • roller;
  • glazing beads;
  • primer;
  • wood paint;
  • putty;
  • antiseptic impregnation.

The set of necessary tools depends on the nature of the existing defects. To renew a wooden door, it is often necessary to carry out more work than planned, since many defects cannot be hidden with paint. For improvement decorative characteristics You can use vinyl stickers, photo wallpapers, stencils, overhead facades and other materials.

We remove the canvas from the hinges, free it from the handle and awnings

To facilitate restoration work, it is advisable to remove the canvas from its hinges and place it on a flat horizontal surface. Removing the canvas is not difficult, but it is advisable to use the help of another person who can support the canvas if necessary. If the hinges are not painted, you can remove the retaining pins from them.

However, if the hinges have been painted many times or are designed in such a way that the retaining pins cannot be removed, another method may be used. First, the paint is removed from the loops where they are attached to the luda. After this, to remove the canvas, you should open and unscrew all the screws securing the hinges.

The removed canvas must be placed on a flat surface and the places where the handles are attached with self-tapping screws must be freed from paint. They need to be unscrewed. If the hinges and handles that have already been unscrewed are not removed after removing the screws, the problem may be due to adhered paint. In this case, you can use a chisel and a hammer.

Disassembling a paneled door leaf

Most types of doors have a paneled structure, that is, their leaf includes frames, crossbars, inserts of shaped elements or glass. Such inserts complicate the repair process. To improve old interior doors of this type, you often have to completely disassemble them.

First you need to inspect the canvas and identify the location of the tongues connecting the individual elements. In most cases, they are located at the corners of the jumpers. After this, the tongues should be drilled out with a drill. To separate structural elements it is better to use wooden mallet. After this, restoration work is carried out individual elements. In some cases, you can do without parsing.

Restoring the geometry of the canvas and strengthening it

When the question arises of how to restore an old door, you need to pay attention to the preservation of its correct geometric parameters, since wood can swell during operation due to exposure to moisture. Poor closure may indicate such a problem. It is almost impossible to repair an MDF door that has been subjected to similar impacts. However, if the canvas is made of solid wood, it must be carefully planed from the ends.

The glass should be 0.3 mm smaller than the frame. If desired, you can use an acrylic unbreakable mirror. You can insert both matte and clear glass. The opening must be treated with sealant. After this, the glass is inserted. It is fixed with glazing beads. Thin nails are used for fastening.

Door putty

The final stage of preparing the door for decoration is its putty. It allows you to eliminate existing irregularities and defects. To eliminate chips and cracks that often plague old wooden doors, you need to apply a small amount of diluted wood putty to a spatula, apply to the surface and leave to dry. If there are deep defects, you can repair them with a mixture of sawdust and wood glue.

It is advisable to fill large cracks with wood chips selected to size and treated with wood glue. This method of eliminating chips and cracks is difficult to perform, so it should not be used if you lack the skills. You need to let the putty and wood glue dry. Finished surface sanded thoroughly with sandpaper. After this, you need to apply a primer and let it dry.

It is better to use paint specifically designed for wood. It can be applied either with a spray gun or with a brush, making movements along the wood fibers. The painting process is carried out in 2 stages. First, a basic white coat of paint is applied. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that there are no leaks. The second layer is a tinting layer, so it can be any color.

If during the preparation process it was not necessary to seal large cracks, which entails the appearance of visible defects, you can use transparent varnishes, which will highlight the color and structure of the wood pattern. Before painting, the wood should be treated with stain. To renew old wooden doors with your own hands, the varnish can be applied either with a brush or with a spray gun. There should be no leaks. Often it is necessary to apply several layers of varnish. The stain is applied in a similar way.

The situation when interior doors become unusable and lose their appearance is not uncommon. Knowing a few basic techniques on how to update an old door will help you save a lot and not spend money ahead of time. Having learned how to restore the surface yourself, you will not only be able to give your apartment fresh look, but also to bring interesting author’s ideas into reality.

Having become familiar with several useful secrets listed below, you will be able to do the repair work yourself. Don't forget the importance preparatory work, since this process also affects the beauty of the product. You can decorate the doors using paint, wallpaper, photo wallpaper, decoupage and other techniques.

Preparatory stage

Before you transform an old door, you must first prepare the surface and remove the previous coating. If you remove the product from its hinges in advance, it will be more convenient to carry out repair work. Place the door on a flat surface using a table or trestle. Remove from the canvas: handles, hinges, latches, locks. Replace parts with new ones if they become unusable. Don't forget to remove the glazing beads and remove the glass before starting repair work.

It will be much easier to act by adhering to the following points:

  1. Using a heat gun, heat the surface to remove old paint much faster. When the layer begins to soften, use a putty knife to remove the coating.
  2. Scratches and defects can be repaired using putty and wood putty.
  3. Take sandpaper with different grits. Sand the surface and sand thoroughly.
  4. You can completely renew old doors with your own hands if you apply drying oil or stain to the surface. This measure will protect the canvas from moisture and give the wood a beautiful shade.
  5. Reinsert the glass into the door leaf and use new beads.

If you paint a door or glue wallpaper onto the canvas, do not forget to prime it first. Choose a special primer or thinly diluted glue.

Self-adhesive film

When ideas on how to cover an old door have reached a dead end, choose the simplest and most inexpensive option in the form of a self-adhesive film. Geometric stickers can be distributed onto the canvas, even if you do not remove it from its hinges first. Choose a film of a bright shade to create a contrast with the overall tone. If you match the stickers to the color of the door, it will look tasteless.

Before gluing the film, use a pencil to mark where the patterns will be located. After this, apply the sticker to the canvas and use a rag to get rid of the air under the film, wiping it thoroughly. A canvas on which you can draw inscriptions with chalk will look very stylish and impressive. The cost of such a film is not cheap, but such an option will look very unusual.

Dye

In the process of updating an old door, as in the first case, it is important to use another inexpensive option - paint. Here you will have to remove the door from its hinges in order to paint the door as neatly as possible. You can choose absolutely any color - it all depends on your taste preferences and interior. Buy acrylic or water based paint as it does not have unpleasant odor. It is better to avoid alkyd paint.

Experienced “artists” will be able to paint a door using dye in cans. For beginners, it is better to abandon this idea, since it will be difficult to apply the material in one tone, since the dye will be sprayed on different sides. If you have chosen standard option painting, then use matte rather than glossy paint. In the second case, the dye will only highlight all the defects and unevenness of the canvas.

Before updating the doors without changing them, take a roller to make the painting process as comfortable as possible. A wide roller is suitable for smooth and solid doors. It is best to paint the doors in 2-3 layers, applying the paint with a fairly thin ball.

How to update an old door with wallpaper: several methods

It is not difficult to paste wallpaper onto the door leaf, and all stages of the work will not take much time. You can create a beautiful contrast if you choose wallpaper in a color that differs from the color of the walls. Having previously prepared the doors and primed them, you will be able to hang wallpaper according to the following scheme:

  1. Dilute the glue according to the instructions on the package.
  2. Spread the adhesive backing onto the canvas.
  3. Carefully start gluing the wallpaper and do not forget to remove bubbles. A plastic or rubber spatula will help with this, which needs to be moved from the center to the edges.
  4. Use a metal strip and a wallpaper knife to trim the edges of the wallpaper.
  5. Wait until the wallpaper is completely dry to move on to the next decorating step if necessary.

If desired, apply additional decor on top of the wallpaper.

Molding

If, before updating the interior doors with your own hands (based on the photo with instructions), you purchase foam or polyurethane moldings, as well as sockets, then the decor will turn out to be quite unusual. This option will beautifully highlight a room decorated in classic style. Using rounded moldings and a bright background you can decorate the room in Provence style.

After you have hung the wallpaper and it has already dried, use a pencil to mark where the moldings will be located. Using a tape measure, measure out how much material you will need to complete the decor. File the edges of the molding at an angle of 45 degrees. Then take PVA or other glue, treat the back surface of each element and glue along the markings. Wait for the glue to dry completely.

Photo wallpaper

You can give the room a completely new look by sticking photo wallpaper on the doors. This finishing option will look very bright and will help transform the interior of any room. You can order photo wallpaper from any printing house. In this case, it will be possible to individually select the design and type of pattern. Before updating old wooden doors with your own hands in this way, you should follow the previously given instructions for gluing ordinary wallpaper.

Antique effect

In the process of updating the old door, paint and sandpaper will be used to create the effect of antiquity. Before moving on to the decor, cover the canvas with dark paint in several layers. After this, apply light paint on top of the previous layer. Once the paint is completely dry, take sandpaper and begin sanding the top layer until the dark paint shows through.

Using the craquelure effect you can also visually “age” the doors. To do this, use varnish or paint, which, after hardening, will visually form cracks.

Decoupage

Decoupage of an old door will look very beautiful if you use ordinary napkins for decoration. Before starting work, paint the canvas in White color. Then take a three-layer napkin with beautiful design and use scissors to cut out the image. Peel off the colored layer and carefully apply it to the door.

Dilute PVA glue and water in the required ratio and take a brush. Apply glue to the back of the design and attach it to the door. You can repeat this procedure several times until the entire application is completed. Finally, open the surface with acrylic varnish.

Glass inserts

Another good way how to update an old door with your own hands (using photos clearly) it’s worth trying to replace the glass. Install new glass in the door leaf or update the decor of the old one. The stained glass technique will look unusual.

Before painting the doors and creating an unusual stained glass window, prepare the following tools:

  • stained glass paints;
  • gloves;
  • circuit;
  • marker.

It is most convenient to paint glass in a horizontal position. Using a marker, draw the outlines, and then paint the middle on both sides. You can complete the picture entirely by gluing small stones or pieces of glass. These details should also be outlined with a black marker on top of the drawing.

Before you decorate an old door with your own hands, take this recommendation into account. Cut small holes in the door leaf and insert small multi-colored pieces of glass into the middle. This method will allow you to create beautiful composition from glass. This option is suitable if the door leaf is made of solid wood.

Stencil decor

Uncomplicated and yet nice option– door design using a stencil pattern. You can prepare the stencil yourself or you can buy it at a hardware (stationery) store in finished form. Take thick paper and cut out a pattern that you like. You can also prepare self-adhesive film in a similar way.

First, pre-treat the door, then take a stencil and carefully go over the top with a paint roller. Spray paint is also suitable for decoration. Make sure that the template fits tightly to the surface of the door, otherwise excess smudges and stains will appear on the canvas.

Pre-paint the door white, and then use stencil patterns. Black and gold designs will look very beautiful on a light background. When updating interior doors with your own hands, also use a dark background and light stencil patterns.

Art drawing

Art lovers may want to pay attention to this unusual option door decoration. It is enough to first paint the doors in one tone, and then use additional paints and brushes for painting. The drawing can extend beyond the doorway by 10-20 cm and be a beautiful continuation of the composition.

If you don’t have any special talent, but want to restore an old door with your own hands, as in the photo, then first pick up a pencil. Draw a sketch with a pencil, and then start painting. Pre-cover the floor and walls protective film so that splashes do not spoil it. To create a memorable design, put paints in children's hands where they can express their creativity on canvas. Such art will give a sea of positive memories and emotions.

Textile

When you have no idea what can be done with an old door, but you really want to decorate it in an unusual way, the option with textiles is ideal. This is a very labor-intensive process, but the door design will turn out to be truly homely and cozy. Before you move on to arranging the door leaf, first buy fabric with the patterns you like. Avoid colors that are too light, as stains and defects will appear on such a surface very quickly.

Choose a material in the store whose color will blend as organically as possible with the rest of the decor. Use double-sided masking tape to make gluing textiles as convenient as possible. Distribute the tape around the entire perimeter of the door. Make sure that there are no folds along the edges of the door and that there are no patches.

Door lamination

You can update the appearance of the room if you apply film on the doors yourself at home. To do this, buy a self-adhesive film with an adhesive backing at a hardware store. First, pre-prepare the door leaf and cover scratches and uneven surfaces. If necessary, remove the old paint layer.

When gluing the film, do not forget that it bonds to the surface very quickly, so you will have to work very carefully to prevent the appearance of bubbles and unevenness. Apply the film gradually, millimeter by millimeter, using a plastic wallpaper spatula to prevent the appearance of defects.

By choosing one of the above options, it will not be difficult to update the door yourself at home. When decorating, it is important not to forget about the rest of the apartment’s interior and first protect it with film.

Everyone has a need to update interior and entrance doors. There are two ways to solve the problem: purchase new ones or. The second one is quite possible to implement without turning to specialists. In order to need to think over the design, how to implement the idea, familiarize yourself with the work order, stock up necessary materials and make your plans come true.

Thinking through the design

There are many ways, the choice of which largely depends on what material it is made of: wood, chipboard, MDF, veneered or with glass inserts. It can be:

  • paint completely or partially by applying a design
  • varnish, treat with stain, tint;
  • veneer;
  • cover the door with wallpaper, its fragments, vinyl stickers;
  • decorate with moldings;
  • apply aging varnish (craquelure method);
  • insert glass, including painted, frosted, corrugated.

As a result, the cheapest doors can become an exclusive designer product.

Getting ready to implement the project

To remake old doors, you will need the following tools:

  • a screwdriver or a universal screwdriver - for dismantling and opening, hanging and adjusting hinges and handles;
  • spatula, construction knife - for stripping the surface of old paint;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw - for cutting openings in the door if the project provides for the insertion of glass or a sheet of plywood;
  • sandpaper (ideally a sander) - for cleaning surfaces and edges;
  • brushes (flat), rollers (foam rubber or fine-pile velor), rags, sponges - for applying primer and painting;
  • self-tapping screws, wallpaper nails - fasteners;
  • glazing beads and wooden slats– if it is necessary to secure glass or plywood inserts into the canvas.

The material for alteration is selected for each specific case individually. Restoring old interior doors begins with dismantling them and preparing the base:

  1. Prepare a place for work - a horizontal surface sufficient to place the door leaf on it and covered with a non-rigid material.
  2. remove the hinges from the opening, place them on the prepared surface, unscrew the fittings - handles, hinges, locks and latches.
  3. If the interior door has glass and you plan to replace it, then it must be carefully removed, after loosening the glazing beads.
  4. Clean the surface of the old coating and decorative elements - a layer of paint, glass inserts, a cracked layer of veneer, etc.
  5. Sand with sandpaper and remove small particles.
  6. Degrease and prime the surface, wait until dry. If there are no visible major defects on the canvas, then the door is ready for finishing.

Repairing small dents and large holes

If the doors are very old or have been subjected to impacts that have left holes and dents on the surface, then they need to be restored. The damage is filled with special wax or putty, which subsequently hardens. To work you need:

  • hard furniture wax, matched to match the color;
  • soft wax;
  • retouching felt-tip pen;
  • soldering iron or special gas wax melter;
  • lint-free microfiber cloth;
  • fixing varnish.

The order of restoration work:

  1. Trim the edges of the damage along the contour, trimming them.
  2. Fill the dent with hard wax, melt it with a soldering iron and pour it into the recess. Wait until it hardens, remove excess with a knife to level the wax with the surface.
  3. Retouch the color with soft wax and a thin felt-tip pen.
  4. Secure the result with varnish.

It is not necessary to retouch the defect to match the color of the surface if the restored area is planned to be sealed or painted in the future.

If the hole is of impressive size, then instead of working hard wax use wood putty.

For through holes in a hollow door leaf, the restoration process is as follows:

  1. Trim the edges of the pothole, giving the edge a smooth shape.
  2. Fill the hole with soft paper around the edges - a kind of foam limiter, which is filled in at the next stage.
  3. Blow polyurethane foam into the hole.
  4. After waiting for hardening, cut off the excess.
  5. Putty the surface of the foam and the door, leveling it with a spatula.
  6. Clean the surface with sandpaper.
  7. Primed, painted.

Decoration methods: Painting

The most common way to transform an old door is to paint it. It is important not to make a mistake with the choice of color - unsuccessful painting will only emphasize that the outdated door needs to be replaced. The color is chosen to match the walls or in contrast.

Painting is carried out on a previously prepared (cleaned, primed) surface. Work with a brush or roller. As a rule, paint is applied in 2 layers: the surface is covered with the second after the first has dried. The following types of paints are acceptable for use for these purposes:

Acrylic. Eco-friendly, water-based. They are dissolved in water, which evaporates when dried, leaving insoluble resins, so the paint is not washed off in the future, and the surface can be washed.

Oily. Popular in the past, durable and scratch-resistant, these paints have somewhat lost their relevance. They take a long time to dry - at least 24 hours, and are toxic in liquid form. Dissolved with drying oil.

Alkyd. Waterproof enamels, resistant to solvents after drying. Dissolve with white spirit or solvent. They also take a long time to dry – a day. A common group of alkyd enamels is PF-115.

Advice. If, when restoring doors, the choice fell on painting them with alkyd enamel, then it is not recommended to use a foam roller for the job, since it melts under the influence of solvents and forms lumps on the surface. It is better to use a velor nozzle or a fur one with a small pile.

Nitro enamels. They dry quickly - about 1 hour, but their pungent odor can last up to several days. Suitable for use on wood, chipboard, MDF, plywood. The solvent used is acetone.

Drawing

The painted surface can be decorated by applying a design. The easiest way is the screen printing method.

  1. Print out a sample of the drawing you like.
  2. Place it on a more durable material (for example, a thick plastic blank) and cut it along the contour.
  3. Attach the stencil to the door using tape.
  4. Apply paint to the open part of the stencil (with a brush, sponge, or use a can of paint), making sure that it does not get under it in unintended places.
  5. When the paint dries, remove the stencil.

A variant of screen printing is the “anti-stencil” technology, when a cut-out design is placed on a surface and the area around it is painted.

An original solution could be a decor with a geometric pattern, which can be easily applied using paint or vinyl stickers: rhombuses, stripes, triangles, herringbones, polka dots and simply contrasting lines give the canvas an extraordinary effect.

Tinting

The real ones are high, and a layer of paint hides their true dignity. A sure way to improve the interior is to tint a wooden door. Toning is the treatment of wood with compounds (oils or resins) that preserve the appearance of the texture and fibers, but give them a rich color. If the door was previously painted, you will need to remove the top layer and sand the wood:

  1. Remove old paint from the surface. This can be done mechanically(with a spatula) or chemically (special compounds).
  2. Sand with medium-grit sandpaper or a sander.
  3. Tint using stain or varnish.
  4. It is not recommended to apply stain with a brush; it is better to make a swab from a rag, dip it in the stain, and squeeze it onto a rough sheet of cardboard. Tint the wooden surface with light circular movements, avoiding abundant pinpoint stains on the canvas.

The varnish is applied evenly with a brush. Tinting is used not only for, but in this way you can refine the front door.

Glass processing

Interior doors with glass – modern trend. To update the glass, you need to remove the old transparent glass and insert more current sample: matte, with a pattern, photo printing, corrugated, color. If the door leaf is solid, you will first have to cut out the opening and then glaze it. Installation instructions:

  1. Mark the place on the canvas.
  2. Drill a hole of about 1 cm in the corner of the marking so that the jigsaw can fit into it.
  3. Cut the opening.
  4. Make grooves around the perimeter for the glass or nail slats that will hold it.

To insert glass, you must:

  1. Measure the opening in the door leaf that is being prepared for glazing.
  2. Cut the glass, taking into account that it should “sit” in the opening, entering approximately 0.5 cm on each side. To work you will need a glass cutter and a metal ruler.
  3. Secure with glazing beads, driving wallpaper nails into them or screwing in small screws.

Restoration, renovation and decorative design interior doors is a creative process that brings positive emotions and satisfaction. The interior is transformed at the lowest cost, and in some cases an exclusive product is created.

Interior doors are considered an interior necessity. Their service life is quite long, but the lining deteriorates quite quickly. Therefore, it is worth thinking about how to return them to a nice appearance.

Peculiarities

If your interior doors need restoration, then do this work really yourself, observing the sequence and paying attention to the subtleties.

First you need to remove old surface. To do this, apply a special product to the surface that will help remove paint and varnish. After this, wait a while and remove unnecessary paint. If it is not completely removed, it can be removed with an iron.

Next we begin work on restoration. To do this, you need to sand the surface using sandpaper and moving along the grain. If defects are found, they must be eliminated. Acrylic putty is perfect for this.

In what cases is it required?

When a door loses its former appearance, the thought of replacing it immediately arises, and few people think about its restoration.

Let's look at cases in which updating would be a beneficial solution:

  • It is cheaper to repair a solid wood panel than to buy the same new one;
  • It is rational to restore an old door if the interior as a whole is expected to be replaced;
  • Updating an old wooden door makes sense when it was made by hand and most likely has an original design on it. Then it is a full-fledged antique, which is stupid to throw away;
  • Do-it-yourself repairs make it possible to create an inimitable product that will be the center of the interior;
  • If the door is of non-standard dimensions, it is easier to repair it than to buy a new one;
  • Repairing with your own hands is a very entertaining and interesting job.

How can it be restored?

Depending on the material from which the door is made, the method of its restoration will vary.

Wooden

Wooden doors, which are based on solid wood, are of particular importance. Despite the richness of the appearance of analogues of such doors, real materials look more advantageous. Usually these doors only need to be replaced exterior finishing, since the main part of them remains in in good shape. Thus, doors from “Stalinist” times were made exclusively from solid wood. These “Stalin” doors are huge in size, so it is better to update them than to purchase new ones. Oak structures only need to be repainted.

Repairing wood panels is quite an interesting process that will give you pleasure.

To choose a favorable shade for the door, you should take into account the wide selection of stains that color the wood in various colors. It is recommended to apply it using a spray gun or brush. Next, the surface is updated with a special varnish.

Fiberboard

When updating doors made of fiberboard, do not use a soldering iron or coarse sandpaper when removing old paint, because the thickness of the coating is quite thin. The paint must be cleaned very carefully using fine-grained sandpaper or an iron, which must be wrapped in cloth. The door can be repainted later. It is possible to slightly change the facade and glue relief strips or imitate paneled doors.

Also, a door made of fiberboard can be decorated using veneer. All you have to do is glue it to the old base, and your door will look attractive again. It is worth noting that this material has a low price, which will have a positive effect on your wallet. You can also update at home using MDF panels. Such repair options are suitable for both doors to rooms and doors to the bathroom.

Be sure to take into account the fact that when repairing a door, you also need to restore its frame. It is not advisable to purchase a new one, because when installing it, openings may form between the door and the threshold.

PVC

Plastic doors don't always look great, and if they are dirty or in bad shape climatic conditions, quickly lose their former attractiveness. But you shouldn’t immediately think about how to purchase and replace an old door with a new one; it would be wiser to give it a new look.

This can be done by one of following methods: glue colored vinyl film, cover with veneer, cover water paint based on polyurethane. Any of the methods is tempting and budget-friendly in its own way.

Painting involves preparatory and painstaking cleaning of the plastic surface from stains and film. With the help of cleaning agents, final cleaning is carried out and the dyeing process begins.

Even before painting, you need to add the necessary ingredient - a hardener, after which the paint must be filtered. It is recommended to paint carefully, using a paint sprayer. Apply in one layer, add several more layers if necessary.

Dry paint at different temperatures. Drying at room temperature will take about nine hours, but if you dry at a temperature of forty degrees and above, the paint will dry in an hour or an hour and a half.

It is important to know that absolute crystallization occurs in about a week. Compared to other repair methods, this option is the most labor-intensive, so we recommend taking a closer look at other restoration methods.

The use of vinyl film makes it possible to quickly and without much difficulty decorate the door with all kinds of patterns and ornaments. A huge selection of patterns will help you choose the most suitable solution for any style and interior. It is quite easy to glue it: a pattern is applied to a previously prepared plane, after which the base is removed and the film is glued.

It is fundamentally important to take into account some factors: after cleaning and degreasing, even before gluing the pattern, treat the surface with a solution containing soap. This step is necessary for convenient pasting and will prevent air from getting under the image.

In this process you will need an assistant, especially if the area intended for gluing is large sizes. Never wet the paper base, otherwise you will not be able to tear the film off it.

Another method that stands out for its ease and ability to give your door a truly luxurious look is veneering. This restoration method is not very well known, but thanks to it you can easily transform an old plastic door into a wooden door, as a result of which the external difference will not be very noticeable.

At its core, veneer is natural wood, so the appearance will be quite attractive. Before gluing with veneer panels, it is also necessary to carry out preliminary work on plastic surface: first you need to clean and degrease it, then remove the protective layer, apply veneer and glue it with an iron. Be sure to stick optimal temperature so that the glue is perfectly fixed and the plastic does not deteriorate, using thick fabric instead of a gasket.

In general, DIY door repair is not very difficult if you have ever encountered this kind of work.

Laminated

It is also possible to repaint a laminated door or glue veneer onto it. During use, laminated doors wear out and scratches appear on them. Getting rid of such defects is quite difficult, because this coating is practically impossible to process.

For damaged laminated doors, you cannot use stain and varnish, since before applying these products you will need to use putty to restore the defects, and it will be visible under the varnish.

Of all the variety of paint and varnish compositions, only paint will give laminated surface former appearance. But painting it yourself is quite difficult, since there is no adhesion between the plane and the paint. Paint does not adhere well enough to smooth laminate, so it will most likely peel off within a month and the doors will look even worse than before the restoration.

Repair iron door Can different ways: decorate with dermantine, stick on PVC film or veneer panels.

Color solutions and decor

After the preliminary work is completed, you can begin decorating the doors. There are some options on how to decorate a door. These include sanding with painting and further use of varnish, gluing wallpaper, painting with a stencil, using vinyl stickers and overlays, and reconstructing the canvas.

These methods are widely used nowadays. Let's look at them in more detail.

Sanding and painting

This is an excellent option for which veneered planes are suitable. The correctly selected composition of the coloring preparation makes it possible to highlight wood drawing on a surface. After preliminary work, the door is painted in the required color. For maximum color saturation, two or three layers can be applied. With the help of paint it is possible to preserve the original decor of the door. To prevent the development of mold and mildew, cover the surface with stain before applying varnish.

Wallpapering

Restore interior white door using wallpaper is a fairly attractive option that can be used at least annually. This method is not difficult and quite inexpensive.

To refresh the door leaf with wallpaper, you first need to apply the primer in one layer and wait until it dries. Then you need to cut out the wallpaper from the wallpaper. Make sure that the size of the cut piece of wallpaper matches the size of the door, or cut the canvas a little larger for allowances. After this, apply glue to the surface and apply the wallpaper, smoothing and removing excess glue.

Drawing from a stencil

You can also transform old doors using stencils. You can buy them ready-made or make them yourself. To apply a picture, follow these steps: first of all, coat the prepared surface with varnish or paint and wait until it dries. Apply a stencil to the dried surface and attach it. Then free space paint the inside or outside and remove the template. Next, wait until the paint dries.

Vinyl stickers

Decorating with vinyl stickers is modern method finishing. Vinyl stickers can withstand humidity, water and sun, and can be washed if necessary. It’s easy to stick them on the door - you just need to lean the sticker and smooth it out. Modern stick-on designs can be used several times; they are simply removed from the plane and glued to another place. They are often used for decoration plastic doors to the balcony.

Overlay facades

Sometimes it is not enough to restore an interior door, but you need to change its facade. Overlay facades, which are made from various materials, but it would be wiser to buy an MDF overlay. They do not absorb moisture, hold their shape for a long time, are simply attached with screws or PVA glue, and also have a low price.

A door decorated in this way will decorate your interior.

Canvas update

If you want to increase the number of glasses in the door leaf, or even change their location, you will need to work hard. After you have removed the paint, remove the glass and cover the resulting holes with plywood. IN in the right place make the slits, then coat the door with varnish or paint and wait for it to dry. Then attach the glass to glazing beads in the new location. Instead of glass, you can attach decorated panels.

Decor accessories

If your door was made many years ago, it is most likely equipped with antique fittings, which would be better to restore than to throw away. To do this, sand the object with sandpaper and apply enamel primer, which will highlight the beauty of the ornament. Once the handle is dry, reattach it.

The above methods are acceptable for any type of door. But some want to see new facade with a bright pattern on it. In such cases, paint is not suitable and other options can be used.

One of them is gluing photo wallpaper. This method makes it possible to give the door original look. Photo wallpapers stand out for their variety of images and colors, but with frequent touching and contamination they lose their former appearance. Sticking on the door vinyl wallpaper has the same pros and cons as photo wallpapers, but they stand out because they cost much less.

Restoring interior doors using fabrics is a very original and extravagant idea. It is enough to make a composition and glue it to the surface, using not only fabric, but also notes, posters, maps and old photographs. This method will cause incredible delight among your guests.

When performing all the above work, be extremely careful so that everything looks perfect.
