How to drill a hole in glass at home and why make a hole in a bottle. How to drill a glass bottle at home video How to drill a glass jar at home

The Internet is full of tutorials on how to evenly cut the neck of a glass bottle and thus make an original glass or vase. But today I will tell you my way, how you can glass bottle cut not big window or cut it lengthwise.

Will need

To do this, we will need a regular soldering iron with a thin tip, a marker to draw the outline of the hole, a glass cutter or a sharp metal object to mark the initial cutting point.

Cutting a window in a glass bottle

At the first stage, using a marker, draw the outline of the future hole on the glass.

Then in one of the places along the contour (preferably a straight section) using a glass cutter or sharp metal object a notch is made to facilitate the formation of a crack.

Next, the soldering iron warms up the place where the scratch was made.

The glass warms up gradually, in small areas a few millimeters.

After a crack has formed, the soldering iron tip moves further along the marker line. If the crack stops, you need to go back and heat the glass in the opposite direction.
I want to say right away that the work is painstaking and you need to be patient.
Having reached the corner of the cutting line, you need to carefully heat the corner so that the crack turns at the desired angle. This is the most difficult area, since the internal forces acting in the glass prevent the crack from turning. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a smooth turn or a 90-degree angle. From own experience I can say that quite often (about 25% of cases) the crack does not turn exactly where it should or even goes to the side. Therefore, I first heat the corners with a point, and then slowly rub them so that the crack goes away.

Because of the problems with corners, this method is not very good for cutting small holes in glass.

Another important step is completing the crack. It is better to connect cracks on a straight section, and not in a corner. Now I will explain why. The fact is that at a distance of about 3 mm from each other, the cracks very often stop moving and simply do not connect. So I just warm up this area, and then gently tap hard object along the cut-out area from the inside of the bottle through the neck.

The uncut portion of the glass breaks off, leaving jagged edges that then have to be carefully sanded off with fine sandpaper.

I also used this method to cut the bottle in half lengthwise. The only caveat is that I couldn’t drag the crack to the bottom of the bottle (probably because the glass was too thick), so I cut out the glass around the bottom.

I also experimented and cut out a large window on the entire side of the bottle - everything turned out great. But when I tried to cut out a small rectangular window, strong cracks appeared in two corners, so this experiment can be considered a failure.
This simple method allows you to cut a glass bottle lengthwise.

You will need

  • - air gun;
  • - drill with a diamond or hardened steel drill;
  • - turpentine;
  • - sulfuric acid;
  • - water;
  • - sand or clay;
  • - a template made of wood, foam plastic, glass, metal or other material;
  • - emery powder.

Instructions

Most quick way: Take with a well-charged cylinder. Stand a few meters away, aim carefully and shoot at the bottle. The ejected ball will pierce right through the bottle without breaking it. Please note that there will be two holes, and of a rather small diameter.

To drill a hole of the required diameter in a bottle, first prepare a device to securely hold the glassware, for example, a box in which it will sit tightly. Take a diamond drill bit for ceramics and drill very carefully, without pressing. Be sure to consider the cooling system. This can be constantly supplied water (an assistant will be needed here) or a specially prepared cooler. To make it, make a template from wood, foam plastic or other material, drill a hole of the required diameter in it, and attach it to the bottle with wax. Fill the hole with sanding powder (this can be made from sandpaper or abrasive wheel), mixed with turpentine.

To drill a hole in a glass bottle with a steel drill, heat it white and soak it in sulfuric acid before use.

To drill a hole large diameter, take a tube made of non-ferrous metal (aluminum, brass, copper, bronze) 2.5-5 cm long and use it as a drill. Attach a circle made of foam plastic, glass, wood, metal or other material of the required diameter to the glass; the tube will rest against it when drilling. Pour sandpaper moistened with water into the open end of the tube and drill slowly, at low speeds. Make sure that the sanding paste is always between the edges of the tube and the glass.

If you want to avoid drilling, use clay or fine sand. Thoroughly wash the surface from grease and dirt using acetone, alcohol or gasoline. Pour wet sand or clay, mixed to a dough-like state, in the form of a slide about 10 mm high. Make a funnel with a stick or other tool, and the diameter of the translucent glass inside the hole should correspond to the diameter of the desired hole. Melt lead, tin or other solder in a metal jar and pour it into the resulting hole. The hole will have smooth edges, but remember that this method is suitable for glass no thicker than 3 mm.

Today we are making a New Year's lamp. To do this you will need a few simple things. The most important thing is to decide how to drill the glass bottle. The method that is available at home is suitable.

In principle, you can make a hole in a glass bottle with a simple drill. An ordinary metal carbide pobedite tip. Specialized in ceramics. But we choose the most the best option- This is a diamond-coated drill. Since its diameter is 12 mm, we use another drill of the same size to make a hole in the wooden plank. This will be the guide. Diamond drill has no center and can work without it preliminary preparation the surface being processed is difficult. As you can see, the hole turned out perfect.

Take a glass wine bottle. We make a mold for water from ordinary plasticine. It will cool the drill. Place the template on top and secure with masking tape. Now the guides will not go anywhere, with its help it is convenient to hold the bottle on the table. We will fill it almost to the top. We start drilling at low speeds. The hole is simply ideal for home use. Small chips remained due to the fact that the pressure was not reduced to a minimum.

The edges here are not dangerous, but we’ll walk anyway sandpaper. Rubber stopper to prevent the wire from rubbing against the edge of the glass. Drill carefully on both sides to ensure accurate drilling. Cut two holes on one side. We tuck the garland inside. We put the plug on the wire and insert it into the hole. Here the New Year's fairy tale begins... And problems...

IN in this example Incandescent light bulbs were used, so the temperature in the bottle reached almost 100 degrees, this is in half an hour. Dangerous thing! By removing the plug, the master hoped to increase ventilation, but this did not help. The temperature did not drop. Is there really no fairy tale? Do not worry! She will be saved modern technologies. Old garlands will be used as a gift for someone. And we will use modern LEDs. Although they are the same Chinese as before. We fill them in the same bottle. Everything is working. The thermometer shows 23 degrees. We set the mode to constant glow and leave for half an hour. After some time, the temperature rose only a few degrees. We attach the regulator with double-sided tape for convenience. All. There will be a fairy tale! Recommend this video to your friends, maybe they will also want to see such beauty. Subscribe to the construction hack channel on YouTube. Watch the video and it will become clear how the master managed to carefully drill a glass wine bottle using a diamond tool at home.

How to drill a bottle with a simple drill

How to make a hole in a glass bottle
Hello my dear friends! Romance with you, as usual. There were two questions: one was how to make a hole in a glass bottle, and the second was how to cut a glass bottle. I will answer the second question a little later, since I am conducting experiments and looking for the most convenient way do it.

Let's start answering the first question. Here's a bottle of wine. I made this stand with a simple wooden railing in advance. This will help prevent the bottle from moving when drilling the hole. If you can't make such a stand, you can dig a hole in the ground, put two bricks or two cattle, it depends on your imagination. The first thing we need to do is wrap paper tape around the bottle near the hole. For example, we'll wrap it here. Then mark the drilling site.

We are going to use a simple drill, of course it is better to use a screwdriver since it has low speed rotation and we don’t need high speed rotation for drilling glass. The drill is simple, dust-free tungsten carbide.

This is an 8.2 mm drill, steel R6M5. Let's start. It is important not to press too hard on the drill, because the glass may crack and we will not be able to process it. So let me show you what we got. As you can see, the glass has begun to drill.

It is also important to add a little water to the hole so as not to overheat the drill and glass bottle.

Well, we made a hole.

Let's remove the tape and see what we have there. We have such a hole. If you look closely you will notice small cracks inside, this is caused by the excess pressure of the drill at the end. If you control the pressure of the drill, especially at the end of drilling when the hole is almost done, you will get a perfect hole. So you can see that we did it well without using tungsten carbide or special tooling.

Metal ring in a cola bottle: drill the bottle

This is what is called an Impossible Object.
These types of objects are not literally impossible, of course, since they are all created in one way or another.
These things are tangible illusions that can be held and examined up close. They seem to defy logic and seem “impossible.” They make great gifts, are fun to discuss, and present a fun challenge.
The item I made here is a 1/4″ thick solid metal ring through two holes in the neck of a coke bottle. There are no visible seams on the bottle or ring.

Step 1: Video

This was inspired big project Jack Houweling on YouTube where he places a wooden ring in a cola bottle: Impossible ring through a glass bottle.
I wondered how difficult it would be to create basically the same thing, but with a metal ring instead of wood.
I made a video of the creation process. Check this out if you're interested:

Step 2: What you need

Step 3: Degreasing the ring

The first thing I did was put the galvanized ring in vinegar until the coating completely dissolved.
This is important because although you can technically weld the coating, it produces a toxic gas that is extremely dangerous.
So this is the easiest way to make equipment parts like this safe to weld.
I purchased this ring at a local hardware store. They also had nickel plated rings, which have a shinier and almost yellowish tint, but this coating cannot be dissolved in vinegar. A general rule of thumb is to never weld through coatings. So whatever you can't safely dissolve, you have to grind down to bare metal.

Step 4: Drill holes in the bottle

The bottle cap was very carefully lifted from several points to remove it without deforming it. This way we can add this later. Then I drank a cola.
I mounted a board on my drill press that I clamped a Coke bottle to.
The board was attached to my drill press table and a spray bottle was used to keep the drilling area wet.
The drill was set to a lower speed and two holes were made in the top of the bottle neck using glass
5/16 inch drill bits. You need to go quite slowly and allow the drill bit to remove only a little at a time,

Step 5: Cut out the ring

The metal ring was cut in half using a portable band saw.

Step 6: Holes in the Bottle Neck

I used a diamond grinder in my rotary tool to grind down the inside edges of the holes in the bottle so that the ring could fit freely and rotate up and down without getting stuck.
This was done with frequent mist of water from a spray bottle.

Step 7: Weld the ring

The ring halves were attached to my metal welding table, with one half going through the holes in the bottles.
The ring was then welded with several small spot welding around both connections.

Step 8: Prepare the Ring

Using a carbide grinding attachment in my rotary tool, I carefully ground the welds to form the ring shape.
I then ground everything around the ring and intentionally made it a little rough to give the whole thing a rather worn look.

Step 9: Polish the Ring

Some automotive metal polishing was used with a couple of rags to quickly buff and polish the metal ring by hand.

Step 10: Wash the bottle

How to drill a glass bottle with your own hands. Very original lamps are made from shaped and colored glass drink bottles. Several attempts made at one time to drill bottles ended in failure. The methods for drilling glass were some exotic ones and usually ended with a long crack in the glass from the point of drilling. But if I used a special glass drill, everything worked out. To drill a beautiful rectangular bottle of a good drink, a drill with a carbide insert was purchased (~ 60 rubles).

Features of drilling a glass bottle

1. Direct the drill fixed in the electric drill strictly perpendicularly to the point of drilling the bottle and, with slight pressure, wait for the first glass crumbs to appear.

2. There is no need to drill at maximum speed, the drill is afraid of overheating.

3. Every 20-25 seconds, stop drilling and remove glass chips. At the same time, the drill tip will cool down.

4. When the tip of the drill passes through the thickness of the glass, the drilling sound will change slightly and the drill feed (pressure) should be reduced to a minimum.

5. After drilling through the thickness of the glass, rinse the bottle in running water.

6. When drilling, it is better to follow safety precautions - work with gloves, goggles and respiratory protection.

In this way, several glass bottles were successfully drilled with my own hands, from which they were made with power from a 220 volt network.

Hole in the bottle

With the help of this teaching aid you will learn how to drill a hole in glass. Instead of throwing away your glass, turn it into something beautiful and practical. A bottle from a trash can can turn into a real treasure. But first, you need to learn how to drill holes in glass or mirror.

In this article we will look at methods of drilling in glass and analyze the mistakes.

Here are some rules to follow when drilling through tempered glass:

  1. Be careful!
  2. Be patient.
  3. Be smart.

If you have any doubts when drilling glass at home, go to rule No. 1.

Step 1: Be careful

Observe the following safety rules when drilling glass:

  • Before you start a serious project, practice on some scrap glass bottles.
  • Protect yourself by wearing safety glasses to protect your eyes from possible flying glass shards.
  • Put it on protective gloves to protect your hands from cuts if the vessel suddenly cracks or breaks during drilling. This happens quite often.
  • Be patient - don't force the drill. Let the tool do its job well.
  • Take your time - this is just a reminder to be patient.

Step 2: Failures

The first attempts to drill a hole in the bottle will most likely fail. Don't try to drill through the bottom. The glass bottom has too much internal stress, which can lead to cracking. Also, do not try to drill through the bottle - this is a bad idea, because... it will most likely crack. A low-quality or worn drill can also lead to an accident.

When working with a drill with a carbide tip for tiles and glass, you should not press the drill too hard, otherwise the bottle will immediately crack. For drilling, it is preferable to use a diamond tubular drill.

These drills can be purchased on Amazon.

Step 3: Tools and Materials

You can drill with a drill, but it is better to use drilling machine.

You can buy yourself this machine for $59.99. It will make your life easier.

  • Cushion (placed under the bottle while drilling).
  • Drilling machine (preferable to a drill, much more stable and easier to use).
  • Diamond tubular drill with a diameter of 6 mm; or
  • Drill bit with carbide tip for tiles and glass.
  • Leather gloves to protect your hands from glass shards (just in case).
  • Water.
  • Glass bottle.

Give preference to a diamond tubular drill.

Step 4: Drilling the Glass Skull

Always look for a thinner place to drill on a glass container. If, for example, you take a bottle in the shape of a glass skull, then its bottom is very thick, so there is no point in drilling it (the glass will simply break). But the back Bottom part The glass skull is no more than 6 mm thick, so you need to drill in this place.

Place a cushion (you can use an old sweatshirt, for example) on the drill press table to reduce the pressure on the glass caused by the drill bit while drilling. This will also protect the glass from scratches.

Drilling process.

  1. Place the pad on the drill press table.
  2. Insert a 6mm diamond tubular drill bit into the drill chuck.
  3. Check the drill depth to make sure you drill through the glass completely.
  4. Place the bottle under the drill where you want to drill.
  5. Hold the bottle firmly with your hand, after putting on a glove.
  6. Turn on the drill press and start drilling without applying much force to the spindle feed handle.
  7. Spray water over the drilling area every 20 seconds to remove dust and cool the glass.
  8. Cool the glass with water until you have completely drilled through the side of the bottle.
  9. Wash away glass dust.

The whole job will take you no more than 2 minutes.
