How to properly wash down pillows. Is it possible to wash pillows in a washing machine: step-by-step instructions. Washing pillows with different fillings. We wash down pillows at home with our own hands

The cleanliness of home textiles affects how cozy and fresh your home will be. However, not all elements home use equally easy to care for. For example, a pillow. Its purity is the key to your health. But what if it is filled with fluff? How to properly care for her? Since this is not always easy, we suggest you consider practical tips.

Is it washable?

Although at first glance washing a down pillow may seem not an easy task, this procedure can be freely carried out at home. In order for it not to lose its original properties, it is important to know some secrets of success.

Preparation plays a big role in quality washing. To begin with, it is worth sewing a bag - a diaper in which the washing will be carried out. Special balls that will whip up fluff will also come in handy. For these purposes, you can use regular tennis balls, or you can purchase goods in special stores.

Washing down is not an easy task. It is in no hurry. You should allow enough time for this process so that you are not in a rush. Prepare several basins and a colander. During the process, you will have to repeatedly transfer the filler. The colander can be replaced with a sieve for sifting flour.

Manually

It is customary to send down products to the dry cleaner. However, you can often hear dissatisfied reviews. Some odors do not go away, and the quality of cleaning in some laundries is very questionable. Therefore, performing a difficult procedure at home is sometimes the best solution.

Important! The down laundry bag should not be the same size as the pillow itself. It is necessary to sew a bedstead at least three times larger. Otherwise, the volume will not be enough to properly wash the product.

The most unpleasant phenomenon that housewives who wash the filling themselves have to deal with is that it sticks together after washing. To prevent this, it is necessary to strictly follow the technology for washing such products.

Here's the basic procedure:

  • ripping;
  • feather washing;
  • detergents;
  • rinsing.

Preparation

Prepare your work surface. It is undesirable for any foreign objects to remain around. If there are animals or small children in the house, it is better to remove them from this process.

Spread the pillow along the seam of the product. It is advisable not to do too much big hole, since fluff will fall out too quickly through it and it will not be easy for you to work with it. Also consider the age of the product. If it is too old, then you will need great care and attention to preserve the feathers, as careless actions can cause them to break and turn into dust.

Wash

The washing process itself may vary. For example, feathers can be washed by immersing them in small portions in a warm mixture of water and detergent. By rinsing them in this composition, you can gradually transfer the washed feather to a sieve and let it drain before rinsing. It is very important not to allow feathers to be packed tightly into a container of water. They shouldn't stick together.

Another way to wash is to place all the feathers in a pre-prepared quilt. Since it is much larger in size, it is worth considering where you can wash down items. The container for washing using this method should be much larger. Dip all the feathers in the bedsheet into the prepared soap mixture and beat them off a little.

Advice! If you want the pillow to be cleared of any odors and dust, soak the filling in the prepared mixture for two hours. After this, you can remove the water and proceed to rinsing.

Detergents

It is also important what product you use. For these purposes, you can successfully use mild shampoo or regular baby soap. Good results can also be obtained by using modern liquid powder.

Rinsing
Although some people simply change the water several times, it is much easier to use the following method.

  • Place the washed fluff in a deep colander.
  • Place it under running water.
  • Rinse it under water for a few minutes until the detergent is completely washed out.

After washing and rinsing, the feathers can be gently wrung out and sent to dry.

In the washing machine

Not every housewife would risk spending the whole day painstakingly washing pillows by hand. Fortunately, this procedure can be successfully performed in a car. How to do it?

  1. Divide the fluff into several pillowcases, which will be much larger in size.
  2. Seal the seams properly so that the filler does not get into the machine and damage it.
  3. Add an extra rinse.
  4. Wash in lukewarm water, no warmer than 40 degrees.
  5. Place several tennis balls in the drum - during the washing and spinning process they will intensively beat the fluff and it will not bunch up.
  6. You can squeeze the fluff at low speeds - up to 400. If the machine does not have such a spin mode, simply drain the water and squeeze out the filler manually.
  7. Use delicate detergents in small quantities as detergents.

Drying

Drying is a very important stage of washing. Since the feather itself takes quite a long time to dry, if everything is not done correctly, mold and an unpleasant odor may form on the product.

Important! In order for the pillow to dry well and retain its freshness, the process should not take more than two days. Otherwise, the products will give off a musty smell.

When washing by hand
Clean down must be spread on a dry surface in a windless place. It is advisable to place dry newspaper or several layers of fabric under it. The most important thing when drying feathers is to constantly stir them. There must be constant access to fresh, dry air.

The fewer feathers dry out in one unit of area, the sooner this process will be completed. If you see any lumps that have formed, break them up with your hands, not allowing them to cake.

When washing in a machine
In this case, it is not necessary to remove the fluff. You can simply hang the pillow on a string and shake it every 2-3 hours. If it’s a cold season outside, then you need to help the feathers dry. Use a hairdryer.

  • Take the pillows out to severe frost and leave for several hours.
  • You can also use steam treatment using a steam generator to kill dust mites.
  • For a complete wash, choose a warm time.
  • After washing, sew or buy a new napper.
  • Clean up ticks at least once a year using one of the following methods.
  • For drying, you can sew a large special bedsheet, for example, from old tulle.

The video below will help you visualize the process described in the article.

There's nothing better than a good old feather pillow. Today there are many fillings available: from wool and straw to cereals and synthetic fibers. However, feather pillows are still the top seller.

Why wash feather pillows and can you do it at home?

Feather pillows can be washed by yourself because modern market provides housewives with various products for washing products filled with down and feathers. Since down jackets have become widespread, the sales industry has been providing buyers with all possible accessories to care for them.

It is necessary to wash pillows because natural material, such as filling made from feathers and down of waterfowl, absorbs moisture, dust and gland secretions well. And this, in turn, is a favorable environment for the proliferation of various types of bacteria, which leads to allergies and diseases respiratory organs, skin problems. Feather filled pillows can and should be washed

Many housewives rarely ask themselves about the need to do laundry. feather pillow. It is believed that systematically washing and replacing pillowcases is a sufficient care measure. Unfortunately, few people suspect and know what danger lies in the contaminated contents of a bedside table.

However, the development of many diseases of the respiratory system is associated precisely with the use of a contaminated and unclean feather pillow. It is imperative to wash your pillow, both doctors and allergists say this, but not more than once or twice a year. More frequent washing may lead to loss of product quality.
Previously, the process of washing a pillow was more reminiscent of the process of restoring it, but now, thanks to developed technologies, everything is much simpler

In this regard, the question arises of how to properly wash down and feather pillows. Frankly, many years ago, when washing machines and various means for breaking fluff during washing were not available, yours truly would embroider the finished pillow, dry the feathers and down separately (most of the down component was inevitably lost along the way). After such a painful procedure, the feathers were sewn back into the bedside table, and in some cases, a certain fabric was purchased and a new bedsheet was sewn. Now, fortunately, this method has long been forgotten and washing a feather pillow is easier than curling your hair.

Preparing for washing

Most of the time and patience will have to be spent on the preparation stage for washing. This is a rather labor-intensive and energy-consuming process, because complete ready product It is not advisable to wash it, as, for example, they do with down jackets. Washing the entire pillow only gets rid of the dust that has accumulated on the surface. The drying process with this treatment will also not give the desired result.

The first thing you should decide on initial stage, is a type of filler: chicken, goose feather or loon down. Bad news for those who have a pillow filled with chicken feathers. Such a feather can easily turn into dust when washed. In this regard, it is not recommended to wash such filler. It is better to take the product to a special workshop. Chicken has a special feather structure that is different from the feathers of waterfowl. Chicken feathers take an extremely long time to dry and do not repel moisture.
At the first stage, it is important to determine which bird feather is used as filler

In other cases, washing is possible. To wash waterfowl feathers, take care of several covers - small bags in which the filling will be placed. You can make these bags yourself. The material suitable is the one from which bedsteads are sewn, namely teak. You can replace it with any other thin and durable cotton fabric. Of course, many people advise using gauze to wash down and feathers. And there is some truth in this, because this way the filler is rinsed better, but fluff will easily “escape” through the windows of the fabric. Therefore, if you do choose gauze, fold it in three or four layers. For one standard pillow 70x70 cm, five of these bags will be enough, with a size of 20x20 centimeters.

Take care of bags-covers for washing feather filling

There is also a way for the lazy: some housewives sew one large bag, which is twice the length of the bedstead. When washing this way, balls are added to the machine to break up the fluff, which can be bought in specialized departments.
To prevent fluff from sticking together washing machine, add special balls to the drum

Knock out the pillow and place the fluff in the covers

After the preparatory work, the pillow must be knocked out in order to get rid of accumulated dust as much as possible. Dust inside the pillow can accumulate in heaps when washed, so this action is extremely important. It’s easier to get rid of the accompanying troubles in advance. And only now can you distribute the fluff and feathers into the cases prepared for them. To do this, unravel the napkin along the seam and carefully remove the fluff from there.

From my own experience, I will say that it is more convenient to do this right in the bathroom and without clothes. Because this will make it much easier to wash off the fluff from yourself and your apartment. Yes and family life such a picture can bring life to life.
To remove the feather from the pillow, carefully spread the quill along the seam

It is best if the fabric for transferring the down is slightly damp, so the down will catch on to the material faster. The edges of the covers in which the filling is placed must be sewn up well or tied very tightly so that it does not fly apart and the cleaned pillow does not shrink to half its normal size.

Choosing detergents

Today the market is replete with specialized products for cleaning down and feather products. Liquids are best. Dry laundry detergent has large granules that get stuck in such filler, practically not being washed out of it.

The most careful action in this case will be liquid powder, gel for wool products and shampoo. The basis of the positive effect in such products is lanolin. It is this ingredient in the composition that has a beneficial effect on down and feathers, making them elastic and protecting them from repeated contamination for a long time. For washing down and feather filling, it is better to choose liquid detergents.

When washing down and feathers, it is better to refrain from using strong-smelling products, because they adhere well to natural materials and will subsequently interfere at night, irritating the olfactory receptors. Therefore, you should avoid using regular bed linen conditioner.

The most popular detergents for washing down and feather products in our country:

  • Heitmann liquid for products with down and feather filling;
  • Grangers Down Wash;
  • Nikwax Down Wash.

The price range of such products: 400–1000 rubles.

Many housewives use both shampoo and dishwashing detergents.

Along with the use of synthetic fillers, pillows continue to be traditionally stuffed with bird feathers. This excellent heat-insulating and moisture-proof material is shared with humans by waterfowl representatives of the bird world - swans, ducks, geese, eiders. To increase the softness of sleeping accessories and reduce their weight, manufacturers use a down-feather combination.

Such pillows have a lot of practical advantages: hygroscopicity, breathability, shape stability and pleasant elasticity, which for many is a prerequisite for a comfortable sleep.

Let's talk about how to wash a down and feather pillow at home and what processing methods are guaranteed to restore freshness to the product and help maintain its original softness.

Facilities

Despite the huge range of drugs household chemicals, not everyone detergent Suitable for cleaning feather and down pillows. So, from the use of washing powders, and even famous brands, it is advisable to refuse immediately, because It is quite problematic to rinse the powder granules from the down and feather filling efficiently.

The second negative point concerns the loose consistency of powdered products, which negatively affects the beneficial qualities natural materials. But when there is nothing else at hand, the use of the powder should be strictly dosed, no more than 50 g per machine load.

For the care of down and feather fillings, gentle biological products in the form of gels are recommended. They are usually used to wash delicate fabrics and natural fiber items. And this is exactly what you need for washing feather and down pillows.

Which drugs deserve attention:

  • Specialized concentrate "Unipuh." It contains no phosphates, aggressive bleaches or chlorine. It does a good job of removing a wide variety of contaminants, while maintaining the integrity of the filler structure, lipid coating and the breathability of pillows. Treatment with Unipooh reduces feather fragility and prevents the filling from rolling off. They are good for cleaning down jackets and down bedding.
  • Delicate biological agent BioMio– environmentally friendly and odorless. Ideal for gentle and high-quality cleaning of products made from natural materials.
  • Biogels for washing children's clothes - high-quality products that, thanks to the gel formula, can be rinsed out of the structure of natural fibers without problems. They have hypoallergenic properties and easily cope with stubborn stains.

There is no doubt about the benefits of laundry soap with a high alkali content and fatty acids in a volume of at least 72%. Let us once again list the main advantages of a product that is well known to everyone:

  • It has an antibacterial effect, which is an additional advantage in the fight against dust mites.
  • It has a completely environmentally friendly composition without the slightest hint of synthetic additives.
  • Hypoallergenic – eliminates the risk of developing or exacerbating allergies.

Method of application: the block is crushed with a grater and a working solution is prepared from the resulting shavings. Minus: after washing, things have to be rinsed thoroughly.

In addition to liquid detergent or soap, it is recommended to use a mixture of one or more aromatic oils to neutralize the peculiar smell of bird feathers.

Methods

To properly wash a down and feather pillow at home, this is done by machine and manually, it is important to properly prepare for processing.

You should know that, no matter what method is used, only the filling needs to be cleaned. And since such products are not completely washed, you will need covers where the filler will be placed in parts to avoid its loss.

Chintz is suitable for sewing fabric cases, although other loose cotton fabric can be used. Gauze, by the way, is absolutely not suitable option: fragile single layer material the sharp tips of the feathers will quickly break through, and the two-layer gauze shell will instantly become clogged with fluff. In both cases, the volume of packing will sharply decrease, which is unacceptable.

The width of the cases should match the width of the sleeping accessory, while being twice as long. With bags of this size it is convenient to carry out any manipulations when washing, and drying the contents will take much less time.

You can use a couple of old pillowcases as cases. Optimal solution for reusable washing - diapers with zippers.

To prepare a down product for cleaning by any method, proceed as follows:

  • First, the dust accumulated inside is removed using a carpet beater (cracker).
  • Carefully rip the napkin from one edge.
  • Using caution, transfer the filling into the cases. A damp cotton sheet will limit the unhindered spread of weightless fluff around the room when it is removed from the bedsheet. Besides, natural fibers cotton have antistatic properties, which also makes it easier to work with light feathers.
  • The cases are tied well, and if you are not too lazy, then secure the ripped edge with threads or fasten the zipper.

It is advisable to immediately clean the gutted napkin. Don't forget to get rid of any lint left inside before washing.

Handwash

The process of washing bedding accessories manually includes three procedures:

  • prolonged soaking;
  • the washing itself;
  • repeated rinsing.

Warm water is poured into a large container or bathtub, optimal temperature from 30 to 40°C.

Hot water provokes the appearance unpleasant odor, which will subsequently be impossible to get rid of.

Soaking covers with down and feather filling for two hours is enough for it to soak thoroughly and even the deepest dirt begins to come out. Washing may have some nuances, which directly depends on the degree of wear of the pillow.

Cleaning a new pillow

Recently purchased pillows have very fresh filling, so the feather fans are securely held on the rods, that is, you don’t have to worry about the safety of the filling during wet processing.

Procedure:

  • the product is soaked in any of the previously listed detergents;
  • the breastplate is freed from feathers;
  • Place the filling in parts in a colander, rinse and squeeze;
  • sort through the wet down and feather mass to remove remaining specks;
  • the feathers are transferred back to the colander and the rinsing procedure is repeated;
  • dilute a few drops of aroma oil in a container of a suitable size and lower the feathers into it.

Thanks to this procedure, the filler will acquire a pleasant smell and will be disinfected once again. The best effect is provided by natural aromatic oils of orange, pine, and cypress. Synthetic fragrances can cause itchy skin or migraines. After the aroma bath, all that remains is to dry the feathers, which will be discussed later.

Cleaning an old pillow

Here you will need to act with caution to avoid damage to the repeatedly used packing. In this case, cleaning products and aromatic oils are used in a similar way. To eliminate old feather smells and improve their condition When soaking, ammonia is added to the water. If ammonia is not available, you can use vinegar at the rate of 15 ml of essence per 5 liters of working soap solution.

Unlike new stuffing, old stuffing is carefully washed directly in the fabric cases.

Washing machine

Feather bedding can be washed at home using an automatic washing machine. In order to improve the quality of washing, do not neglect the capabilities of special soft plastic balls for cleaning feather fillings. Their principle of operation is extremely simple: when the drum splashes water and turns the contents along with the balls, they hit the products many times and “knock out” deeply embedded dirt. Another useful function of balls is prevent feathers from matting in clumps.

An alternative to a plastic ball is a tennis ball, which will provide a similar effect when washing feather stuffing.

General rules machine washable mean:

  • The use of reliable covers made of dense material that can withstand repeated rotations of the drum and water pressure. There will be no problems with the compact new accessory, even if you wash it entirely along with the padding. Whereas the strength of a worn diaper is questionable, which means there is a high probability of its damage during the washing process, and this can lead to a malfunction of the washing machine.
  • Uniform load distribution inside the drum. An uneven load when loading one case will cause strong vibration. For this reason, you need to add a towel or a couple of pillowcases, then the balance will be restored.
  • Right choice washing mode: creation optimal conditions machine washing involves using the following programs: “Delicate wash”, “ Handwash", ideally - "Washing a duvet/down jacket." Any of these modes is characterized by a combination of a temperature of 30°C and a double intensive rinse with a spin on low power up to 400-500 rpm.

Sequence of work when washing by machine:

  • cases with padding are placed in the drum;
  • the encapsulated gel is added directly to the drum, and the concentrate is filled into a compartment specially designed for liquid products, after which the balls are added;
  • At the end of washing, the cases are removed and laid out on a flat surface to dry.

How to dry?

To begin with, let's give a few practical recommendations general plan for drying down and feather accessories for sleep:

  • When squeezing the feather mass, it is necessary to remove moisture efficiently. Wet feathers are of interest to pathogens and molds. From a product with a characteristic unpleasant odor, which will already be a clear sign mold damage, all that remains is to get rid of it.
  • It is advisable to carry out wet cleaning of down and feather accessories in the summer. In hot weather, items will dry at maximum speed. Therefore, drying will only take a day or two. The faster the moisture evaporates, the lower the likelihood of fungus developing.
  • Required condition high-quality down drying requires good air circulation, so cases with padding are placed in sufficiently ventilated places.

Let's look at the three most common and most convenient ways drying the down and feather filling.

On open air

Drying feather contents outdoors can be done not only in the warm season, but also in the winter season. Advantage summer dryingpossibility of treating feathers with ultraviolet light– weapons of mass destruction of pathogenic viruses and bacteria. A similar effect can be achieved by “freezing” the filling in winter, since the effect of frosty air is just as destructive for all harmful microorganisms.

How to dry properly:

  • the filled cases are gently wrung out using a terry towel;
  • then knead the matted clumps of feathers with your hands;
  • hanging the cases on the street.

If the filling is dried in the summer, then it is periodically shaken, kneading by hand. IN winter period The covers are first brought into a warm place, allowing the frozen moisture to thaw, and only then the contents are straightened out.

Battery

If it's too cold outside, you can use heating radiators to dry the washed feather stuffing. To prevent the down and feathers from drying out, they are distributed into several cases, filling 50%, systematically whisking and kneading the lumps, not forgetting to turn the cases over often.

Using special devices

Nowadays, only the lazy do not have a convenient floor clothes dryer. Just this one useful thing and is useful for drying cases filled with feathers and down. To speed up drying, it is placed in close proximity to heating radiators.

Another modern household assistant is the dryer. This perfect solution issue with drying washed bedding accessories. According to the instructions, such a unit ensures their complete drying within four hours for a given temperature conditions 30 degrees. If you place several balls in the dryer, you will also get rid of clumps. Owners of automatic machines equipped with a dryer should also use miracle balls, which will ensure that the down filling is evenly whipped.

Whatever method is used, the final stage of pillow processing is filling the washed and ironed pillowcase with dried filling. The cut edge is sewn together.
