You can wash a pillow using an automatic washing machine, but few people know how to do it correctly. To figure out how to wash pillows at home, you need to familiarize yourself with cleaning methods depending on the filling.

Products can be filled with down, feathers, wool, synthetic or organic materials such as buckwheat.

You can easily machine wash pillows with synthetic filling. Products made from down will require compliance with some nuances, and pillows with organic filling can be washed only in some cases.

How to wash pillows in a washing machine?

The most common synthetic fillings are padding polyester and holofiber, although there are other options such as polyester and even polyester balls. It is easiest to wash such a product in a machine at home, since synthetics are less demanding in terms of cleaning conditions.

To understand whether pillows can be washed in washing machine houses made of synthetics, place a heavy object on them before washing. After some time, remove it and observe the ability of the pillow to restore its original shape. If the product was able to do this, then washing it in the machine will not harm it.

As you know, many washing machines are equipped with special programs that allow you to treat fabrics with care. Conventional modes such as everyday washing at home are not suitable for synthetics. For it, it is best to choose a delicate wash cycle or special program cleaning bedding.

If your machine does not have special modes, try to find one that matches optimal conditions product streaks. It is better to wash the pillow in the washing machine when not high temperature about 40 degrees at low rotation speeds. When it comes to cleaning products, it is best to choose gels. Powder can be difficult to wash out of synthetic fibers, while gel is much easier to rinse out. Since the pillow is a product with which a person actively comes into contact with the skin, it is better to rinse it additionally after washing.

Pillows with synthetic filling are unpretentious in the spin cycle. Such a product will not suffer from spinning at speeds of about 1000.

How to wash a feather pillow in a washing machine?

These product options are more difficult to clean than synthetic pillows. But they can also be washed at home in a washing machine. However, this is not so easy to do. If you simply place pillows with synthetic filling in a machine drum and wash them in a certain mode, then the down product first needs to be ripped apart along the seam, and then the filling is divided into several parts. Down and feathers are sewn into pillowcases or specially designed covers. You should not mix too much fluff into one cover, as in this case it will wash much worse.

When the down filler is distributed into pillowcases or covers, it needs to be put into the machine. If your device has a regular-sized drum, then you need to put several cases with feathers. At large sizes You can put about four at once.

To prevent fluff and feathers from clumping, you should also put a couple of tennis balls in the drum. The same principle applies to washing down clothes, so you can purchase special laundry balls in the down department. If you are going to wash with powder, reduce the amount you usually use for washing by half. But the best remedy will become a gel.

Feather pillows can be washed using the delicates or duvet programs. The water temperature when washing should not be higher than 30 degrees. When spinning in the machine at home, you need to set the minimum possible number of revolutions. Be sure to use an extra rinse.

Feather pillows should be washed at least once a year, although it is best to clean them about three times a year.

How to wash pillows made of natural material?

In addition to synthetics or down, there are other equally popular fillers.

For example, bamboo pillows. This natural material, which has antibacterial properties, gives the product softness and at the same time elasticity. Bamboo options are ideal for sleeping and are easy to machine wash at home. You need to clean it at home once every six months, because layers of bamboo fibers accumulate inside it.

Bamboo products can be washed at home in the same way as options with synthetic filling. As cleaning agents, you can choose gels for washing children's clothes or blinds. You can place balls in the drum to fluff up the bamboo while washing.

The filler can be sheep or camel's wool. Is it possible to wash pillows with this filling at home? The answer will be yes, but in this case the machine must have a program for cleaning woolen items. Laundry detergents should also be designed specifically for wool. They usually contain lanolin.

  • A popular pillow filled with buckwheat husks can only be cleaned by hand. To do this, the product must be cut open, dried and calcined at home, and its cover must be washed by hand or on a delicate wash cycle in a machine.

How to dry products?

Washing such products differs in the presence of nuances for each filler. But an equally important process is drying. If you do this incorrectly, the pillow will develop bad smell, and if it does not dry completely, it will become a breeding ground for germs.

Options with synthetic or bamboo filling are dried on a horizontal surface. It is advisable that the room is well ventilated.

If you have washed down products, you need to dry such filling very quickly so that it does not rot. Therefore, it is recommended to machine clean down pillows at home in the summer. On a sunny day with high air temperatures, any amount of down will dry much faster. As the filler dries, you need to beat it. When it becomes completely dry, the down and feathers are put back into the cover and sewn up.

Woolen options are dried horizontally on the floor, but you can also use the drying mode if your washing machine has one. But you need to dry the wool in a machine at a temperature of 30 degrees.

Is it possible to wash the products differently? Of course, you can clean them by hand. Perhaps this option will be more acceptable for down products. But even when cleaning manually, you must remember that the water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees.

To wash feather items on your hands at home, the filler is not placed in pillowcases or covers, but washed directly. It is left for two hours in water in which the cleaning agent has been previously diluted. Then the feathers or down are washed and rinsed using a colander. Dry the down filling on towels.

In addition to washing in a machine or by hand, you can use steam to clean products at home. This will require a special steam installation.

If you are not sure that you can properly clean your pillows at home, you can always take them to the dry cleaner, but washing synthetic, down, and wool items yourself is quite simple.

How to wash a feather pillow in a washing machine or by hand: Video

In order for a feather pillow to serve for a long time and not lose its properties, it must be periodically cleaned of dust, biological fluids and other contaminants accumulated on the pillowcase and filling. The product should be washed at least once a year. It is very important to thoroughly dry the filler after this, since due to the remaining moisture in it, mold may begin to develop inside. To prevent this from happening, you should learn the basic rules for caring for feather pillows.

You can wash your feather pillow by hand or use a washing machine. However, in both cases it is impossible to apply usual ways– process the product as a whole. You will need to carefully rip open the pillowcase and distribute the filling into small fabric bags sewn in advance or 1 cover, 2-3 times the size of the pillow.

Procedure:

  1. Beat the pillow with a clapper to remove dust from it.
  2. Carefully rip the napkin open along one of the seams and remove the filling.
  3. Place a small portion of feathers in small cases or a spacious bag. It is important to ensure that they are not tightly packed, and that the filler lies freely inside.
  4. Sew the covers tightly so that the feather does not come out during washing.

The napkin is washed separately using the usual method.

Selecting a detergent

Conventional washing powder does not rinse well, sticks together into lumps, and washes away the natural fatty lubricant of the pen, which leads to the filler drying out and losing its properties. Therefore, bulk products should not be used. If nothing else is at hand, put no more than 40-50 g in a special compartment of the washing machine.

The best choice is a liquid concentrate or gel designed for washing delicate fabrics or natural fibers. There are even special means for washing down products. They do not contain chlorine, phosphates, bleaching components and other substances that destroy the filler, but they retain grease and protect the pen from drying out, becoming brittle or sticking together.

Another valid option is to use liquid soap or grate a block of household goods on a fine grater.

Machine washable

Washing procedure:

  1. 2-3 cases with filler are placed in the drum. A larger quantity is undesirable; the machine will vibrate too much under heavy load, and the filler will clump into clumps. If using 1 large cover, place a couple of towels with it to distribute the load.
  2. Pour detergent into a special compartment. It is not advisable to add conditioner.
  3. Place special balls or tennis balls into the drum. They will hit the covers as the drum rotates, preventing the pen from clumping and helping to remove dirt.
  4. Set the machine to the recommended parameters and start the wash cycle.
  5. After finishing the work, take out the covers, lay them out on a towel, roll them up and squeeze out excess water.

The washing machine settings are shown in the table.

Handwash

It will take longer to wash a feather pillow by hand, but there is much less risk of damaging or completely ruining the filling.

Procedure:

  1. A bathtub or other large container is filled with water whose temperature does not exceed 30 °C. If you use a basin for washing, wash the filler in parts.
  2. Add liquid detergent or dissolve soap shavings in water, mixing thoroughly.
  3. The fluff removed from the pillowcase is poured into the soapy liquid.
  4. Soak for 3-4 hours.
  5. Place some of the filler in a colander and rinse under running water. Clean the entire pen using this method.
  6. Rinse the bathtub or basin, fill it with clean warm water, and add detergent again.
  7. Immerse the filler and rub it between your palms with soft, careful movements. You need to act carefully so as not to break or deform the pen.
  8. Rinse in parts in a colander.
  9. Squeeze lightly with your hands or leave in a sieve to drain as much liquid as possible.

To disinfect the filler and give it a slight aroma, before the last rinse, you can immerse it for a few minutes in water to which a few drops have been added. essential oil. Any one with antiseptic properties will do: orange, tea tree, lavender, cypress or others.

Drying

After machine washing or hand cleaning, the product should be dried properly. It is very important to do this within 2 days. If moisture remains in the filler longer, mold will begin to develop on it and an unpleasant odor will appear.

Cannot be used for drying heating devices– drying out the pen leads to its fragility. Having taken the covers out of the drum or gently wrung them out after hand washing, they are ripped open. Take out the feather and lay it out on a horizontal surface, for example, a floor dryer covered with fabric. Leave in a well-ventilated area. Regularly throughout the day, beat the fluff, shake and mix it, breaking up lumps.

Before you put the filler back into the pillowcase, you need to make sure that it is completely dry. After this, the cover is sewn up again with a strong seam.

Alternative Methods

You can tidy up your pillow, remove dust and destroy dust mites in your feathers at home without washing. Having taken the filler out of the bedsheet, lay it out on the balcony or in the open air. In summer they are positioned so that straight lines fall on the feather Sun rays, and in winter they freeze it out - leave it for several hours at sub-zero temperatures.

Washing a feather pillow is quite labor-intensive, but necessary process. If you do not take care of the product, it will quickly become unusable; dust mites and other pathogens will appear in the filler.

Despite the popularity of synthetic materials, down filling for pillows has been and remains one of the most popular. Such products are distinguished by lightness, softness, elasticity, breathability and hygroscopicity. The disadvantage of down pillows is the possibility of mites breeding in them. To avoid this, you should clean the product periodically: at least once a year. Let's figure out how to wash a down pillow at home.

Is it possible to wash down pillows at all? Wet cleaning of products is allowed, but this process is labor-intensive. You should prepare for it.

If you plan to hand wash, you need to remove the filling from the pillow. You need to rip the pillowcase (one seam at a time) and carefully transfer the fluff to a dry plastic basin. It is important not to jerk so that it does not fly apart.

The work must be carried out in a closed room so that a draft does not scatter the down filling throughout the house. There should be no children or animals nearby, and household appliances which can become clogged with fluff.

When using a washing machine, you need to sew an additional pillowcase (bag) in which the pillow will be wrapped before being sent to the drum. The bag is required to protect the drum from fluff if the main pad is damaged. It should be made of thin but durable cotton fabric without holes. You can also use a special bag for washing things in a machine.

In addition, for machine washable You should buy special pillows with small spikes. They have an additional mechanical effect on the down of the pillow during rotation of the drum, preventing clumping. Instead of balls, you can use tennis balls (2 pieces are enough).

Tip: If the pillow is many years old and has never been washed, it is advisable to take it to the dry cleaner. Old down can completely disintegrate after getting wet.

Basic washing methods

So, how to wash a down pillow? There are 3 main cleaning methods:

  • handwash;
  • machine;
  • steaming.

Handwash

Stages of work:

  1. Pour water at a temperature of 40 ºС into a large basin or bathtub. Dissolve the detergent in it. Gel-like laundry detergent, baby shampoo, or wood shavings are suitable. baby soap. The amount of the drug depends on the volume of water.
  2. Place the fluff in the soap solution. At large size It is better to divide the pillows into several parts. It is important that it floats freely and does not lie flat. Leave the filler in the water for 1.5-2 hours.
  3. Collect some of the fluff with a colander and rinse under running water. Move to clean water with detergent. Process the entire filler in this manner. Rub it a little with your hands. Again, gradually collect the fluff in a colander and rinse under running water.

Important: When draining the water after washing, you should cover the opening of the bathtub or sink with a mesh so that fluff does not clog it.

How to wash a down pillow differently? A less labor-intensive way to hand wash is to put all the fluff into a large pad (as for machine processing), soak it for several hours in soapy solution and rub with your hands. Rinse in sections under running water in a colander. This washing option takes less time, but can lead to fluff sticking together.

Machine washable

How to wash a down pillow in a washing machine? Procedure:

  1. Place the pillow in the prepared pillowcase. Carefully sew up its free end. Place the product in the drum along with marbles or tennis balls.
  2. In the compartment for detergents pour a small amount of powder (about 50 g). If possible, we recommend using liquid or gel machine wash products as they rinse out better. No need to add conditioner.
  3. Set the “Delicate Wash”, “Hand Wash” or “Duvet” mode. Optimal temperature– 30-40 ºС, spin – up to 400 revolutions, rinse – double or intensive.

Note: Washing a down pillow in a washing machine may require ripping out the main pillowcase and placing the down in several small, pre-prepared bags, if the pillow itself is large enough. Also, dividing the down into parts contributes to better washing of the filler, and therefore can be used for small pillows.

Steaming

How to quickly wash down pillows at home? If available, or you can treat the product with hot steam.

  1. Hang the pillow using clothespins on a clothesline.
  2. Carefully treat it with a steamer on both sides. Repeat all manipulations twice.
  3. Straighten the down of the pillow with your hands and place the product on a horizontal surface until completely dry.

Steaming a pillow will not make it as clean as washing, but it will remove odor, destroy mites and pathogenic flora, and also refresh the pillowcase and filling. Its advantage is minimal expenditure of effort and time.

Drying

After washing, it is important to dry the down pillow thoroughly. It is better to clean in the summer so that the product can dry in a maximum of 2 days. Otherwise, mold formation may begin, accompanied by unpleasant smell and the appearance of black spots on the filling or napkin.

If the entire pillow was machine washed (or in small covers), it should be hung on a line outside in the shade or in the scattered rays of the sun. In addition, a room that is well ventilated is suitable. Every 2-3 hours the product must be shaken and turned so that the fluff does not cake. If cleaning was carried out during the cold season, the pillow can be placed near the heater (but not on it) or dried with a hairdryer, but no more than 10-15 minutes at a time.

One option for drying a pillow is to hang it on a clothesline

After hand washing, the filler should be spread out on a horizontal plane in a thin layer, with paper or several layers of absorbent cotton fabric underneath. You need to dry the down in a room where air circulates freely and sunlight penetrates. It is important to protect it from gusts of wind and drafts. Such manipulations can also be carried out after machine processing by removing the filler from the wet pillow.

Drying takes several days. The fluff should be shaken periodically and clumps should be sorted out by hand. After it has completely dried, you need to put it in a clean bedsheet (washed or new) and sew it up. When making a new pillow cover, it is recommended to rub its inner surface with a thin layer of laundry soap so that the down filling does not become dirty so quickly. But this advice is not suitable for people with a tendency to respiratory allergies.

To ensure that your pillow lasts a long time and makes it a pleasure to rest on, you should adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. Every morning, beat the product, carefully turning it in your hands. Thanks to this, the filler is saturated with air and retains its elasticity for a long time.
  2. Once every 1-2 months, take the pillow out to open air so that it is ventilated. You should not place it under the scorching sun; it is better to choose a shady but well-ventilated place. In winter, the product can be kept in the cold for several hours.
  3. Every time you change bed linen, lightly beat the pillow to remove dust. You should use a flat plastic cracker.
  4. If the pillow is not used for a long time, it should be dried and placed in a fabric cover. Do not use a plastic bag. The product must “breathe”.
  5. In order for the pillowcase to become dirty more slowly, you should wear an additional one made of thin chintz under the main pillowcase.

Washing pillows with down filling is painstaking, but necessary work. Wet cleaning once a year preserves the properties of the product and protects against the development of pathogenic microbes and mites inside it. If it is not possible to wash at home, you should use the services of companies that clean and dry down.
