Spring steel tornado

We will need a steel strip 50 cm long, 1-1.5 mm thick and 2 cm wide. For our purpose, it is best to use spring steel. We bend the tape into a loop and attach it to the wooden handle of the instrument. The length of the handle is determined depending on the height of the owner: it should be comfortable to work with the tool. You can also make a lever, the same as that of a store-bought root remover. The working steel loop should have a diameter of 20 cm, which is slightly less than the row spacing. The edges of the loop are sharpened with a file on both sides.

For weeds - pitchfork to the side

If the Tornado looks like a pitchfork, then why not make a hand-held cultivator with your own hands from this tool familiar to all gardeners? Let's buy a regular fork at a hardware store and give the teeth of this tool the desired bend using a hammer. In general, the tool should resemble a kind of corkscrew. It is important to take your time and proceed carefully.

For the lever you will need a half-meter piece plastic pipe. We also buy in the store a plastic handle attachment for the handle, which is used for forks or shovels. A bicycle frame and one wheel will be useful. The cultivator head is attached to the frame. The cutting part of a two-handed saw, a small plow, or sharp steel rods made independently can be used for the same purpose. The handles for controlling the mechanism are made of aluminum or steel pipes. A piece of pipe approximately 2.5 cm in diameter will be useful as a cross bridge.

A flat cutter can be made based on an old bicycle, using the working surface of a two-handed saw, ironically called “Friendship,” as the cutting part.

A rod of 16 mm diameter is screwed into it. Part of the rod protrudes above the crossbar.

It is not so easy to give a 4 mm thick disk the desired spherical shape. To do this, you need to be able to deftly handle a hammer. A strong and precise blow to the center of the disc transforms it into a bowl. This is the work that will require the main physical effort. Everything is not as difficult as it seems if you have a welding machine and a master who knows how to use it for its intended purpose. Two corners should be attached to the gear housing. Bent pipes are welded to the corners, which will be used as handles. Another piece of pipe is welded between the resulting handles - a spacer, which gives the structure the required strength.

The axles for the cultivator wheels will also need to be welded to the corners. The wheels are selected to be of medium size so that they are easy to use and do not sink into the soil.

The main structural part is the shaft. It will have to be turned out of ordinary scrap. The connection is carried out as in the original: in a slot. The meat grinder attachment is chipped off with a sledgehammer, after which a bushing with thick walls made of cast iron remains. A blank machined from scrap is placed into it, to which lugs in the form of a screw are welded. They are cut from car springs. Other lug material options were used, but these proved to be unviable.

The lugs are located at an angle of 120 degrees. They need to be screwed out as they rotate, then it will be easier for them to enter the ground, and the cultivator itself will be easier to control. The engine of the device is connected according to the “triangle” circuit, the start is capacitor. For ease of operation, the engine switch is installed on the cultivator handle. The device will last a long time if, before starting work, you lubricate the mating of the homemade shaft in the cast iron bushing with any used oil.

After all, they are made on lathe. Two discs will be smooth, and the other three will have special teeth or curved nails attached. When the disks are ready, they are put on the axle one by one, then bearings and washers are installed, and then the entire structure is attached to a wooden handle. The soil is cultivated with the help of these teeth; they alternately stick into the ground and loosen it. These tines also cut the roots of weeds. Not very long ago, while watching various videos on YouTube, I came across an interesting device called a tornador (as I understand, this is not a brand name, but the name of the device) for cleaning the interior of a car. The target group of buyers of this device are car washes, service stations, and probably also auto businessmen who deal with used cars. I bought the device for personal use. Undoubtedly, the price of the device is affordable for almost every car owner, but working with it requires a powerful compressor, therefore, the device is not suitable for everyone.
It so happens that in my field of activity I have a fairly powerful compressor, so I decided to purchase this miracle. By the way, there are several variations of this device, I chose the simplest version. They differ in the design of the working mechanism; the photo shows the two most popular versions. The one on the right has a metal spray nozzle and rotates on a bearing. The one on the left has this role assigned to a flexible rubber tube with weights. Naturally, it has a shorter service life, but I think it will be easier to repair later.


While I was waiting for my parcel, I bought detergent at a Karcher auto chemicals store. The main requirement is that the chemical must not contain chlorine-containing components and have low foaming ability.
And so, having unpacked the parcel, we have this assembled device:

Looking ahead, I will say that working with compressors with lower productivity is difficult.
The tornador works due to a strong flow of compressed air, which comes under high pressure from the compressor. Inside the funnel there is a thin hose with a micro-nozzle, which rotates in it at high speeds. When you bring the bell of the funnel to the surface at a distance of 1-2 cm, the air flow lifts the pile and knocks out dirt. Thanks to the spiral-shaped turbulence of the air, a “tornado effect” occurs, as a result of which particles of dirt and dust settle on the inner surface of the funnel.
The device is equipped with a tap to shut off the supply detergent. Used for cleaning or drying surfaces.


The theory is understandable, but I wanted to start using it directly as quickly as possible, especially since after watching enough videos on YouTube everything looked very promising. But according to the well-known law of meanness, the test had to be postponed. First of all, when the parcel was still on the way, the main compressor, which was responsible for this function, failed. As a result, I decided to make do with one of the two backup ones. Naturally, none of them fit the parameters. But that wasn’t all. The fact is that the quick connector that is screwed into the device is either an American standard or some other standard, but in the stores in my region you cannot find a mate for it.


I was prepared and aware of this even before the purchase. But here's the problem. Having unscrewed the “non-standard” fitting, it turned out that the thread on it was also non-standard.


The solution to the problem was an insert from a hose with an internal diameter of 12 mm, this is the collective farm I got




In the future, this whole thing needs to be redone, since there is a high probability of damaging the interior parts of the car with a metal clamp.
I decided to start with a family car. The Tornador was connected to a Rostec compressor: receiver 25L, capacity 200 l/min (questionable), maximum pressure 8 atm. First of all, I would like to comment on working with this compressor - it is catastrophically small, you can work for 30 seconds with breaks of 1-2 minutes. This way we managed to clean the deflectors and all the other hard to reach places from pollution. Here are a couple of photos




Since I take care of this car and try to keep it clean, there is not much work in it for a tornado, and the result is practically not visible in the photo. Therefore, in the review I will clean the Gazelle, which is undeservedly deprived of my attention, which rarely even sees a vacuum cleaner.
This time the tornador was connected to a home-made compressor from ZIL-130: receiver - 50 l, capacity - about 150 l / min, maximum pressure 6.8 atm. The situation with work intervals has improved slightly. (I think by connecting these two compressors you can achieve the required power).
I started with the door cards (unfortunately, due to cloudy weather, it was not possible to show the full degree of contamination in the photo). Before dry cleaning, it is recommended to thoroughly vacuum the surface. I was pleased with the results, this thing lifts the pile really well and knocks out accumulated debris from it, and also copes well with dirt on plastic










During operation, dirt has accumulated in the socket; this can be cleaned by immersing it in water.


Next in line were window seals and sun visors.




There should be some kind of towel or rag on hand to remove dirt washed out from the surface, and in my case there was a lot of it, which is clearly visible in the video below. After cleaning, the tires began to have a characteristic squeak, like new ones. And this is the first time I’ve ever seen a visor like this. Much of the credit for this goes to the detergent itself. But with the help of the chemistry itself, it is not possible to remove dirt from the junctions of elements with each other, various crevices and other hard-to-reach places.
We continued with cleaning the deflectors and the plastic of the front panel.








Deflectors are generally a separate issue for me - they are constantly in front of my eyes, and cleaning all the dust from them is not an easy task. Tornador handles such places quite easily. Here's another example
