Electronic library of the system administrator. Useful literature on computer topics Interactive tutorial for Windows 7

Never before has Windows been the most popular operating system from Microsoft– did not receive as many flattering reviews as its seventh version. The product turned out to be really high quality. Almost all user expectations were met: the new operating system has a pleasant and intuitive interface, it is undemanding on computer resources and has a relatively low price. This tutorial is dedicated specifically to this long-awaited new product - Windows 7.

The description of the operating system is presented in the publication in the most logical sequence, taking into account the different levels of readiness of the reader: from the insecure to the sophisticated user. In addition, the book discusses in detail some characteristics that are not new to Windows, but which were not present in the most popular version of this operating system before this - Windows XP. Since the previous version of Windows - Vista - was a fiasco and was not widely used, for example, for many users, the Aero interface and its tricks may be new.

The first chapters of the book will teach you how to correctly install the operating system. In this case, from the four described methods, you can choose exactly the one you need. After installation, we will look at the basic and advanced capabilities of Explorer, as well as the ability to “revive” the software shell using personalization tools.

Along with the operating system, standard programs are installed on the computer. Their goal is to make the life of the average user easier. Among the standard ones there are both small but useful utilities (text editor and Calculator) and complex applications (Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer browser) with updated interface and functions.

A significant part of the book is devoted to the capabilities of the operating system for working on the Internet. And this is no accident: today traveling on the Global Network is often the main objective computer use. How well you study these features will determine how effectively you can use them, as well as the safety of your work. A significant part of the tutorial is devoted to the topic of safety, which, without a doubt, will make your knowledge complete.

The publication also reviews other products from Microsoft under the Windows Live brand. They include a lot of useful things, such as an email client, a photo album and new ways to control your children when they are working on the computer.

I think you are already convinced that the Windows 7 Tutorial should become your reference book. So quickly turn the page and start reading.

Introduction

Dear reader, first of all, please accept congratulations on a wonderful event - the upcoming introduction to the new Windows 7 operating system! Developers have not put as much work into any existing operating system as it took Microsoft to bring its new product to market. Numerous rumors regarding Windows 7 sparked serious interest in the new product among both professionals and ordinary users: everyone wanted to quickly try out the revolutionary innovations of this operating system in practice. Now you have the opportunity to join the ranks of the curious, fully armed - along with this tutorial. This book covers not only the basics of Windows, but also highlights the new features and functionality of Windows 7 so you can focus your attention and understand them better. When writing the book, it was taken into account that many users did not dare to switch to operating system Windows Vista and that all its innovations, which remained in the “seven”, will be new to them.
By default, Windows 7 retains the User Account Control feature. When you try to perform any administrative action, the computer screen goes dark and a window appears User Account Control, in which you need to confirm your actions by pressing a button Continue. Since you will encounter this window quite often, in the material of the book, when describing all actions, mention of it is omitted. When the window appears User Account Control while parsing an example from the book on your computer, just press the button Continue, making sure that the action matches the theme of the example and is called by you. We'll talk about user account control in more detail in Chapter 8.
The book is written based on the most full version Windows 7 – “Ultimate”. Therefore, I recommend that you install this particular release on your computer in order to get acquainted with all the innovations of Windows 7 discussed in the tutorial.

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

In the first chapter we will talk about preparing for the transition to the new operating system (OS) Windows 7 and directly about the process of installing it. You will learn what requirements your computer hardware must meet to support Windows 7, what editions of Windows 7 exist, and you will be able to choose the most suitable one for yourself. Installation of Windows 7 will be considered in two options: both as the only one and as a second OS while maintaining the previous version of Windows. In the final sections of the chapter, you will become familiar with a tool for transferring files and settings from the old OS to the new one, which allows you to quickly restore your familiar work environment on an updated computer, as well as how to update the operating system.

Hardware requirements for installing Windows 7

If we compare the previous version of the operating system Windows systems Vista with Windows 7, the latter is not so demanding on computer resources. For this reason, the question of whether your computer is suitable for installing Windows 7 can most often be answered in the affirmative. This applies even to those cars that are already four or five years old. However, you should still make sure whether your computer’s hardware can afford the famous Aero interface, which the “seven” inherited from Windows Vista.
If you have Windows Vista installed, then we can say that you are in a more privileged position than users of earlier versions of Windows, since even before installing Windows 7 you can evaluate the resources of your iron friend using a special performance index, which takes a value from 1 to 5.9. To find out this index, run the command Start Control Panel System and its maintenance System. In the window that appears, among other information, there will be information about the performance index and recommendations for increasing it.

NOTE
In the Windows 7 operating system, you can also define this index. However, the range of values in it is expanded and does not coincide with the values of this index in Windows Vusta. But despite this, knowing the index in the Vista operating system still helps you figure out which components of the new operating system should be disabled.
If the index value in Windows Vista is 2.0 or higher, you can safely install Windows 7. Even such a low performance index will allow you to work on the Internet and with text editors without problems. But most games that require significant resources should be forgotten. In addition, during the installation process, the installation wizard will independently decide whether or not to disable the Aero interface.
The situation is different for those who want to install Windows 7 on a computer with Windows XP. This operating system does not contain performance index information. This makes evaluating hardware difficult. However, as a rule, you can safely install “seven” on a computer that was considered modern five years ago. Probably, in this case, problems may arise with drivers - programs that control the computer hardware. For example, if your PC has a built-in video or sound card, then you need to be prepared for the fact that any of this will not work in Windows 7.
For this reason, if you want to try to avoid such not-so-pleasant “surprises,” check to see if drivers for the new system have appeared on the hardware manufacturer’s website.
ADVICE
If there are drivers for some hardware that are designed for Windows Vista, then most likely you will be able to use them in Windows 7.
If you are not so keen on searching for different drivers and do not want to dig into the hardware system unit, you can use special program, which will tell you how painlessly you can switch from one system to another. This utility is called Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. With its help, you can test your computer regardless of the installed operating system and get the answer as a result. main question, is it possible to install Windows 7 on this PC? In addition, the program can give some useful recommendations.
If you decide to use this advisor, the algorithm of your actions will be as follows.
1. To a special short address tinyurl.com/no4xb7 download the transition advisor after specifying the language you need.
2. Launch the downloaded program.
ATTENTION
Perhaps, in addition to the advisor file, you will need to download a special Microsoft application.NET Framework versions 2.0 or higher.
3. After installation, double-click on the icon that appears on desktop, and in the window that opens, click the button Start checking. The program will begin testing the computer (Fig. 1.1).
4. In the received report, in the section System, you can follow the link View all system requirements. Here you can see information about which programs have compatibility problems with the new operating system or will not be supported, as well as the drivers of which components should be updated (Fig. 1.2).

Rice. 1.2. Transition Advisor Report

5. To return to the report, in the section Devices follow the link View all devices. A list of all available hardware will be presented here. From this list you can find out whether all suitable drivers are present. After you find out necessary information, you can close the transition advisor.

Windows 7 Editions Overview

Taking into account the interests various groups users, Microsoft has released several versions of Windows 7 on the market. They differ in the set of features and, accordingly, in cost. This section provides Comparative characteristics editions of Windows 7 so you can choose the option that suits your needs.
There are five versions of Windows 7: Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. This list lists releases in order of increasing functionality (and cost). Simpler versions of Windows 7 are obtained by cutting down the capabilities of the most complete edition available to a wide range of users - “Windows 7 Ultimate”.
"Windows 7 Starter". This version is the most simplified version of Windows 7. Its main purpose is to be used as a pre-installed operating system in netbooks. In this version you cannot change the background desktop, There is no Aero interface, the system is not supported automatic creation backups to other computers local network, no Windows Media Center programs, Notes, Scissors. It is clear that this was done to ensure that prices for netbooks running Windows 7 were not too high.
"Windows 7 Home Basic." This basic version of Windows 7 is aimed at home users whose computers are not particularly powerful. Like Windows 7 Starter, it lacks support for the Aero style and some multimedia features.
"Windows 7 Home Premium." This version is also intended for home users, but it has support for the Aero interface. But there is still no system for automatically creating backup copies to other computers on the local network. You will also not be able to control your PC remotely.
"Windows 7 Professional". This version includes all the features of Windows 7 Home Premium, plus the ability to connect a computer managed by the named version to a corporate local network with domain name support, as well as the ability to remotely manage Desk and support for BitLocker data encryption technology.
"Windows 7 Ultimate" and "Windows 7 Enterprise". These versions are the same product, but with different names. The only difference is that “Windows 7 Ultimate” is intended for a wide audience of users, and “Windows 7 Enterprise” is available only under a special corporate license. These products combine all the features mentioned above plus additional features. For example, new technology data protection (BitLocker To Go data encryption), all language packs, BranchCache technology to increase access speed to a large corporate network, virtual disk support.

Installation process

If you've ever had to install one of the previous versions of Windows on your computer, then when installing Windows 7, you will be pleasantly surprised that the entire process is performed in graphical mode and takes relatively little time. In addition, all editions of Windows 7 are now located on one disk and you can simply select the desired edition from the list.
Most often, users resort to one of two options for installing Windows 7: as the only operating system on the computer or as a second one, while maintaining the previous version of Windows. We'll look at both of these options so you can choose the one that's right for you.

Installing Windows 7 as the only operating system

If your computer's hard drive is empty or has Windows on it previous version, which you want to completely remove, replacing Windows 7, follow these instructions when installing Windows 7.
Insert the Windows 7 installation disc into your computer's DVD drive.
First of all, in the BIOS settings, you must specify a CD-ROM as the first boot device, since the system will be installed from a DVD. Since you are a novice user and have probably never encountered a BIOS, let us consider step by step the entire process of changing the boot order of a computer using the Phoenix-Award BIOS as an example. If your PC has a different BIOS version, the appearance of the menu and the names of its items may be slightly different, but the fundamental procedure will remain the same.

DEFINITION
BIOS (from the English Basic Input-Output System - basic system input-output) is a program recorded on a read-only memory chip that is built into the motherboard. The BIOS is executed when the computer is turned on; its task is to test the performance of all devices and prepare the PC to load the operating system.
To get to the BIOS menu, immediately after turning on the computer, press the key repeatedly. Delete. As a result, the menu shown in Fig. 1 will appear on the screen. 1.3. Use the cursor keys to move to Advanced BIOS Features(Advanced BIOS Settings) and click Enter. In the submenu that opens (Fig. 1.4), we are interested in the item Boot Seq & Floppy Setup(Sequence of booting and installing the drive), which is first in the list. Make sure it is highlighted in red and click Enter.

Rice. 1.3. BIOS settings menu (screen photo)

Rice. 1.4. Advanced BIOS Features submenu (screen photo)

The next step is to change the device from which to boot. The first item on the list is First Boot Device(First Boot Device), it must be highlighted. Click Enter to open the device selection menu shown in the center of Fig. 1.5. Use the cursor keys to move to the option CDROM and press Enter to save changes.

Rice. 1.5. Selecting a priority device for booting the computer (screen photo)

To exit the BIOS setup menu and save the new settings, press the F10 and confirm exit by pressing Enter. After this, the computer will restart and a message may appear on the screen (Press any key to boot from CD or DVD). Follow this recommendation to start booting from disk.
After copying the files necessary to start the Windows 7 installation program, you will see its first window (Fig. 1.6), in which you will need to select the language to be installed, time format and keyboard layout. If the option is indicated in all lists Russian, do not change these settings and just click Further. The next step is to select the action you want to perform using the installer. This can be either the installation itself or restoring the functionality of a system that has failed. Since we are now interested in the first option, click on the button Install.

Rice. 1.6. Window for selecting installation language settings

The license agreement will open on the next page. To accept it and continue the installation process, check the box I accept the license terms and press Further.
Then you are asked to select the type of system installation: upgrade from a previous version to Windows 7 or perform a full installation. In our case, you need to select the full installation.
At the next stage, a window will open for selecting the hard drive partition on which Windows 7 will be installed, with information about full size and free space of hard drive partitions. Select the appropriate volume by clicking the mouse button. If the hard drive is not partitioned, the list will only contain one item.
If the installer detects a previous version of Windows on the selected partition, you will be notified about it. Having confirmed your intentions to establish new version Windows, you will automatically agree that after installation the files of the old operating system will be saved to the folder Windows.old. You will be able to open them, but you will no longer be able to start the previous OS.
Next, the installation of Windows 7 will begin. It proceeds automatically and does not require your participation. During the installation process, the computer will restart several times. Since the BIOS settings are still set to boot from CD-ROM, do not press any keys after the message appears Press any key to boot from CD or DVD(Press any key to boot from CD or DVD) to start booting from the hard drive.
When the installation of Windows 7 is completed successfully, the system will start, but before you get to Desktop, you have to create an account, set the date, time and time zone, and select a computer name and background Desktop.
In the first dialog boxes you will need to enter your name and, if there is a need to protect your computer from unauthorized persons, your password. account(Fig. 1.7). What an account is is described in detail at the beginning of Chapter 8.

Rice. 1.7. Entering a username

Next, a window will appear for entering the product key to perform activation (Fig. 1.8), since each edition of Windows 7 has its own activation key. However, you can install the system without entering the serial number by unchecking Automatically activate Windows when connected to the Internet.
Next, you can select special settings for downloading updates, time zone and time, as well as the current location of the computer: a set of network parameters that are set based on what type of network your PC will be connected to (Fig. 1.9).

Rice. 1.8. Windows activation key entry window

Rice. 1.9. Completing setup

We can say that Windows 7 is installed. However, I advise you to finish installing a new operating system by checking the drivers. So, in the best case, all hardware should be defined and all drivers installed. To see if everything is ok, you should contact Device Manager. To do this, run the command Start Control Panel System and Security System Device Manager or in the menu search field Start enter device manager. A window will open (Fig. 1.10).

Rice. 1.10. device Manager

If in Device Manager any part is open and marked with a small yellow exclamation mark, then it is strongly recommended to install drivers for the specified computer components. To do this you can do the following.
Update automatically. Right-click on the unidentified or unsupported device and select Update hardware configuration. Although this method often does not help, you can still try it.
Update by searching online. This method is more optimal than the previous one. Right click on the unidentified device and select the command Update drivers. Then in the window for setting the update method, specify Automatic search for updated drivers.

Installing Windows 7 as a second operating system

Perhaps, in order to gradually get used to the features of the new operating system, or for some other reason, you will want to install Windows 7, keeping the previous version of Windows. This can be done if the following requirements are met: the hard drive must be divided into at least two partitions (one of them will contain the previous version of Windows); Windows 7 will be installed on a free partition with a capacity of at least 20 GB.

NOTE
If the hard drive is divided into two partitions, one of which meets the requirements of Windows 7, and the second is almost completely full, the installation program may require at least 500 MB free space on the first partition to deploy the installation image (later this volume will be freed).
Being in old version Windows, insert the Windows 7 installation disc into the DVD drive and wait until the window shown in Fig. 1.11. Click on the link Install and go through the steps described in the previous section. The only difference will arise when choosing the installation location.

Rice. 1.11. Installer window in Windows XP

When the installation of Windows 7 is completed and the computer restarts, you will see on the screen Windows Boot Manager in which, using the cursor keys, you need to move to the desired operating system and press Enter to start downloading it. If you do not take any action at this stage, then after 30 seconds Windows 7 will begin loading as the default operating system.

File and Settings Transfer Tool

Windows 7 Setup includes: special remedy transfer files and settings, which you can use to move personal files, settings for a number of programs and Desktop both when moving to another computer, and when installing a new operating system on your PC. Using the transfer tool, you can move to new computer(or to a new operating system) the following components.

There are several ways to transfer files and settings.
A special USB cable for transferring data using the tool in question, which must be purchased separately. It should be noted that a regular USB cable will not work in this case.
Connecting computers over a local network.
CD or DVD. When using these media, your old PC must have a CD or DVD burner installed.
USB flash memory (flash drive).
External hard drive.
To transfer files and settings, do the following:
1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD into your computer's DVD drive. Close all windows started using AutoPlay.
