Therefore, embroidery consists of two stages. The first is processing the image and translating it into a format that the machine can understand. This is called differently: creating machine embroidery designs, digitizing a layout, developing machine embroidery programs. And the second stage is the actual embroidery process. Creating an embroidery design
Machine embroidery designs are created on a computer using a special editor. It is made for professionals, so specially trained people, machine embroidery designers, work with it.
The operating principle of this editor is not similar to the automatic embroidery converter. Here, too, you can’t just upload a picture and get a ready-made layout. Why?
The fact is that the quality of embroidery depends on many parameters. These parameters determine the embroidery material on which machine embroidery will be made. Imagine, for example, fur with thick pile and thin, delicate silk. Do you feel the difference? In both cases, the embroidery design is done differently!
There are materials that are particularly difficult to embroider. For example, knitted items with embroidery: how should each stitch be thought out so that it does not fall into the gaps between the loops? Experienced designer machine embroidery specialist knows all the pitfalls of his business and takes into account the features of the fabric when developing a layout.

IN special program the designer uploads the original image. In the example you see raster image, but it’s more convenient to work with vector ones. The dimensions of future embroidery are set.
The designer carefully outlines all the elements of the image. At this stage, everything looks like normal work with a vector editor.
3. Creating a “vector” image
After outlining all the elements, the designer gets something like this. It consists of individual objects, the order of which is not yet important. All objects are visible in the panel on the right.

4. Fill with color

And now the fun begins! Now the designer converts the vector image into a stitch format. Each object is given its own parameters and properties. From now on great importance has an order of objects: they must be filled with stitches in the sequence in which the machine will embroider.

And now, when all the parameters are set, we get a ready-made design for machine embroidery! Now all the stitches are written there in a language understandable to the machine, you can embroider!

So, depending on the material, sketch and desired effect, the designer selects parameters. Let's name a few important ones.
- Thread tension. The embroidery should not tighten the material, but at the same time it should not puff up. Therefore, it is important to determine what the thread tension should be.
- Density of filling stitches. Density is the distance between two rows of stitches. This parameter is a puzzle for the designer because the optimal stitch density depends on huge amount parameters: thickness and texture of the material, its density, type and thickness of embroidery threads, fabric color, planned visual effects, thread tension settings in the machine, types of stitches, number and nature of objects in embroidery... In many ways, the experience and skill of the designer are characterized by his ability to work with this parameter.
- Stitch length. The length of the stitch determines the height of the stitch above the fabric. Stitches that are too long can sag; stitches that are too short will make the embroidery stiff, which will then prevent the material from bending.
- Stitch angle. Changes the direction of stitches on the fabric. By competently manipulating this parameter, the designer can create a volume effect.
- Pull and pull compensation. “It was exactly on paper - but they forgot about the ravines!” An embroidery design that looks perfect on a computer may turn out to be very crooked in practice. This happens because the material for embroidery is not cardboard on which a drawing was applied in ink. The material stretches, can be compressed and unclenched, bent, and wrinkled. To prevent embroidery from deforming the material, the designer takes into account all future tightening and stretching when drawing up the program and deliberately distorts the layout so that it is flat not on the monitor, but on the material.
This, of course, is not all the subtleties. After all, you need to indicate the color of the thread, the shape of the edges of the stitches, and the types of stitches themselves too...
Working on a machine embroidery design
It would seem that that's all? No matter how it is!
The layout of future embroidery always consists of separate objects. An object is an embroidery section with uniform parameters. The designer must not only divide the picture into separate objects, but also determine their sequence. This is required to optimize the embroidery process. The important factors here are the minimum number of color changes and the minimum number of thread cuts. This allows you to do embroidery faster and better.
But even this is not the end of the designer’s work. There are still many little things that need to be taken into account: are all the contours filled with the appropriate stitches, are there any unnecessary objects, will there be any knots in the future embroidery, are all the colors rendered correctly. Yes, and you need to choose a stabilizer.
A stabilizer is a special material that is placed under the fabric or placed between the fabric and the embroidery needle. It is required when working with capricious materials, improves the overall quality of embroidery, and facilitates embroidery on complex materials.
